Airport Express suddenly dead

So I realized my Airport Express just died on me the other day. I plugged it in and waited for it to boot up, but nothing happened. Thinking something was wrong with the power outlet, I found another one on the other side of the house, but I got the same result.
Is my Airport Express dead now? I've had it since August '04, and it's worked perfectly until now. When I plug it in, nothing happens. The light doesn't light up or anything.
Has anybody experienced the same thing?

hello
this is a well known issue, not acknowledge by Apple yet

  • Airport Express suddenly not extending

    First, some technical info.
I am using a late model Airport Extreme with an early model Airport Express to extend my network. All has been working fine until recently. The Airport Express blinks amber and the utility says the connection is good but that the Base Station was unable to extend the network. I have not many any changes to either my Airport Extreme or the Airport Express. Have unplugged the Express and plugged it back in, but get the same result. What would cause it to suddenly drop off the network? Thoughts?

    AMAZING!
Setup: AirPort Express extends Time Capsule both on 7.6.4
Symptom:  Suddenly AirPort Express blinks and AirPort Utility says AirPort Express seems to have problem extending the network
Solution:  Google "airport express not extending" and click link to "Airport Express suddenly not extending"
    Problem solved in seconds!
PS:  I wasted 5 minutes earlier when I pressed the reset button in my AirPort Express hardware and had to reconnect it to my internet connection as the extending network although the setup was very intuitively easy ( a very intelligent setup sequence all figured out by Apple ) ... then I read this !

  • Airport Express lights dead

I have just returned from holiday, to find one of my Airport Express stations "dead". It is not showing any lights at all, neither amber nor green. My other Airport Express station, which acts as my base station is working fine, but this second one which was used to play music in a different room, and to extend the range of the base station, seems to have completely died.
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem, or how to determine if it really is completely dead. It was connected to a surge protector, which was left connected to the mains whilst I was away.

If the status light doesn't go on, the unit is indeed dead.
I don't think these devices are repairable. If you return one to Apple under warranty, I suspect they simply replace it and throw the old one away. If it isn't under warranty, your Apple service center will probably tell you to buy a new one.

  • My airport express suddenly stopped working.

I have had an airport express unit that I purchased new from Apple about a year ago. The warranty is now expired and it has suddenly stopped working. It shined its amber light for more than an hour, and when I unplugged it to see if it would work somewhere else, it flashed its amber light and then went blank. It will now display no lights at all when it is plugged in, and my computer can not detect it, so it is obviously dead. Has anybody had any experience with this issue? I tried a hard reset (back when the amber light still worked, yesterday), but I do not know if it worked since the unit would not stay on for more than a few seconds (now not at all).
Other specifications: It has been used pretty much non-stop since its purchase a year ago as an extender for my Time Capsule's network. It served its purpose, although it seemed to lose connection fairly often. Nothing it didn't fix on its own though.
Well, that's my rant. Thanks in advance!

Unless you want to carefully saw open the case along the center seam with a fine toothed hacksaw or similar tool to open up the AirPort Express and look for something obvious....like a connector that has come loose or broken wire, it is time to replace the AirPort Express.
Your chances of success are very small if you want to try the repair route, so do this for the fun of it more than hoping that it will work.
Even if repairs were possible, a regular shop would likely charge you more than the cost of a new Express.

  • Apple airport express gone dead after 14 months

  • I think my airport express is dead but I dont know...help!

    hi there
on thursday night, i did a number of software updates (unrelated to airport express). anyway, on friday the airport express went down, so i thought that was simply some kind of software update, reset the computer but nothing worked.
so i have tried resetting the unit, unplugging it for a lengthy period of time and nothing gets my little light flashing again.
the reason i am unsure, is that when i do go to plug the unit back into a powerpoint, i see a very quick green flash which suggests the unit is ok, and i am wondering whether i am doing something wrong.
FYI, i am still relatively new to apples, having a powerbook for approx. 16 months although i still dont understand apples the way i did my old pc's.
is it simply the unit, in which case i'll go to my nearest apple store or is it me?
    please help.
    philip

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.
Try doing a factory reset per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the symptoms persist - get a warranty replacement. Absolutely your Airport Express will be covered for this sort of problem if it is under warranty.

  • Airport express suddenly stopped working

My dad updates something on his system and suddenly my wifi, which had been working not 5 min prior to this, suddenly stops.  Now, no matter where in the house we plug it it, the airport express keeps blinking a yellow light.  It just stopped working.  Any ideas?

It's always a good idea to completely power cycle the entire network after any changes or updates to a network.
If  you have not already done so.......
Power off everything....all devices....order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run for a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Start the Airport Express the same way
Start each computer and device one at a time about a minute apart
Check the network for proper operation

  • Why has my audio from Apple TV to Airport Express suddenly stopped working?

    Hi.
For over a year, I have had my Apple TV and Airport Express connected together and the audio worked perfectly fine. All of a sudden the audio playback on movies and Netflix had dropped off considerably. I now have to turn my amp upto 70 to get even the slightest sound. Music plays fine to the AE but not Movie Audio.
Anyone else having the same issue??
I'm confused because it's worked ok for a year!!
    Any help please??

    try restarting all of them

  • Airport Express suddenly stopped working Error (-15006) But Green Light On

    Hi There,
I have had my airport express for a few years and I use it to stream music from my macbook to my hifi.
However all of a sudden i stopped being able to see the drop down for the speakers in the bottom of itunes.
I have reset the airport express many times and reconnected it to my network which sometimes allows the speaker dropdown in itunes.
However when I get to that stage it tries to connect to my remote speakers for ages then eventually it times out or i get the error (-15006).
When tht happens the drop down menu goes completley.
I have now upgraded to itunes 9.0 and it still happens.
Please help I am getting very frustrated!

Sorry guys, I don't mean to give you a hard time, and I know I'd feel the same as you if it was my kit that was fried. Think I must have just finished reading the iPod nano article, where Apple has been slated for refusing to replace nano's that have surface scratches, even though they're still under warranty. It sounded like the usual story, consumer has purchased it, put it in their back pocket, sat down on it, put it through the washing machne and wondered why it was scratched. Funnily enough, I've kept mine in a old sock when not in use, and I've never been so stupid as to put it in my back pocket, clean it once a month and it's still as good as new.
Doesn't help your issue though, but an EU directive might. Not sure when it came into force, and I can't remember which articles it refers to explicitly, but consumer electrical goods sold in the EU must carry a minimum 3 year guarantee. I think that only applies to "white goods", fridges, washing machines, etc. But there was another part where they must have a minimum guarantee period of 2 years, for more general electrical goods.

  • AirPort Express is dead, but under warranty

My airPort Express Base Station does not work. It does not appear anymore, and is apparantly not sending a signal. I have rest it, and tried to troubleshoot it in every way I can think of. I own others that work fine. It is still under warranty with apple, as the receipt says "warranty effective through Jul. 18, 2008." How do I go about the process of having them replace it or fix it?

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.

  • Airport Express suddenly invisible

I have two Airport Expresses, one to print and one to play music in another room. I have never had these working satisfactory-like and am ready to give up.
Suddenly, both stopped working and no longer show up to my iMac G5 (running OS 10.3.X). I tried resetting them at least twenty times, no dice. I tried bringing them to work to see if my G5 (running OS X 10.4.2) would fare better, still no dice. Do I have a hardware issue? If so, how is it that both have the exact same problem?
BTW - I have not installed the infamous new firmware, according to both networks the units don't even exist...

Do a factory reset of the Airport Express per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the default wireless network (called "Apple Network xxxxxx") is still not visible to a computer with a known working wireless network interface, then I too would assume the Airport Express is defective.

  • Airport express suddenly lost range

    Hello,
My airport express was working fine for a long time ago. Suddenly it started blinking amber. I unplugged and plugged back with no success. Did hard reset, nothing. But, when I plug it closer to the time capsule it works!
This is really strange. It used to work fine at the first location for years, but now it only works closer to the router?
    Can somebody help me?

    Some possibilities:
    1) The AirPort Express is 3+ years old, and the power supply is starting to head downhill. When you have to move the Express even closer to the Time Capsule, it is time for a new Express.
    2) You have neighbors that have added new networks near you, and the signals from their networks are interfering with your network.  Not much that you can do about that except locate the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as far away from any outside walls on your home as possible.
    3) A combination of both 1) and 2) above.

  • Airport Express suddenly flash yellow, Airport utility not seeing

I use an Airport Express to extend my network
Primary base station is an Extreme  (Not a dual channel Extreme, late model 2009 I believe).
The Express extends the range of my b/g/n network
Tonight i noticed the Express is flashing yellow- had been solid green. nothing disturbed, no change, not unplugged so I don't know why it lost the connection
Airport utilty 6.1 does not see the Express
I unplugged the Express, replugged it in
    No green
    What do I do?
Apple tech support helped me set up over a year ago... I am not that expert with networking.
All I recall is that it is not set up in bridge mode.
Can someone walk me through this?
    Is the Express simply kaput?
    Thank you

I've had the same problem! I have an Airport Extreme, and an older AExpress. In the past I've had them working together, with the AExpress as a relay. However now I've tried everything - hard reset, WEP security, 802.11n-g-compatible, deleting and re-entering the WDS remote address, allow MAC Address access control, re-uploading the firmware, etc - and this is what always happens:
    - both stations are showing up in Airport Utility, as separate networks
    - I check the settings on the AExtreme to verify
    - I nervously click the Base Station, and Manual Setup
    - I fine-tune the settings, then click Update
    - upon Rescan NOTHING SHOWS UP. NOTHING. Neither station.
    - I restart Airport Utility and Rescan. NOTHING.
    - I restart my computer... voila! they both show up again... back at Step 1
    Is my AExpress dead?
    HELP!!!!

  • All Airport Express Suddenly Died

I have 2 airport express I have been using around the house they suddenly died (no power) a week after the other. This is a real bummer since I am using the 2 as a different SSID to my new Airport Extreme (n) since the freaking thing doesn't work with VPN.
Do you have any idea what happened?
I am rethinking this whole Apple networking setup this has been very frustrating.
I hope you have some thoughts on this. Any help is appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

They both have no power? I would say to take the base stations to an apple store and let them swap out the plugs on the airports to see if maybe its just a case a power surge has blown the fuses in the airport express's.
If its just the plugs then you can buy new plugs to clip onto them, if its not then you are very unlucky and both airport express have suffered a fault at the same time inside the base station itself.

  • Airport Express suddenly no longer works

I'm thinking from reading the boards that it may have something to do with the 6.3 update, but in case anyone else has any suggestions, I wanted to outline my new problem.
Computer worked (wirelessly) absolutely fine this morning (G5 imac, Airport Express).
Got home tonight - internet connection was no longer working.
I ran my own diagnostic - the airport and the computer are talking, green light on the airport, network showing up in the drop down menu. This means it's a cable problem, right?
No. All of the cable modem lights are still working, but just in case, I unplug everything to reset.
I reset, still having the same problems.
I spend an hour (2 phone calls) to cable company, who resets my modem, yells at me for using wifi (they refuse to provide support to anyone who uses a router), but points out that if I plug the modem directly into the computer, I'll know whether it's actually the internet connection.
So I do this (annoyingly, I might add, since the wifi has previously enabled me to have my modem in the living room near the stereo, and not in my office). After stringing wires everywhere, voila! I have internet (as evidenced by this interminably long post). However, when I reset everything again to use the Express, I'm back to the same problem. All the lights on every device say it's a go, but nothing (e-mail, internet, etc.) loads. When I run the diagnostic presented in safari, all lights are green except second to last, "Internet". Gee thanks for that obviousness.
Cable company won't help me at this point, because as far as they're concerned, when the computer is hooked up "correctly", as in hard line to my computer (as in, not violating their terms of service), it works perfectly fine.
I read a few things here, and try a hard reset on the express. no luck (and yes, I know to reset, repower, etc. all the devices before each attempt). The ONLY thing that I did was yesterday, when I ran all the software updates on my iMac. Doesn't explain why it was working this morning...
I've had this airport for several years. I've set them up in all of parents', friends, etc. homes. I've never had a problem like this (I've had plenty of problems, but they always have fairly obvious symptoms - lights out or yellow or whatnot that hint at something wrong).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the quick response! just to give some further detail...
    • Turn off the Airport card and then turn it back on.
-- I did this during the initial attempts (all further attempts will have to wait until tomorrow, as it's past my bedtime)
    • "network showing up in the drop down menu" with a check mark next to it?
-- yes, the network has always shown up.
    • This thread has a user with a bogus DNS entry.
    • Does your Powerbook work?
    -- I'll try these tomorrow
    • What IP are you getting on your iMac?
-- I was getting the standard 10.10....address created by the airport.
    • Create a new Location on your iMac's Network System Preferences and re-create the Airport connection
    • Keychain First Aid?
    • Temporarily connect via ethernet directly to the Express and check it's configuration again.
    • Reset the trusted networks.
-- I'll try all of these tomorrow
    Good Luck!
    -- Thanks!
