Airport Express + Third Party Modem

I just purchased Airport Express. I've got it plugged into my stereo. I've also got a wireless modem through Qwest (who also gives me DSL). It seems that in iTunes, I can choose only to use the Airport Express, or in the main Airport menu I can choose my wireless modem to access the net. Not both at the same time. I think what I want to do is to make the Airport Express a client on my main wireless network. On the phone, I was told they could not help me with that, but assured me there was info online. I have a MacBook Pro and an old iMac, both of which are on the Qwest wireless network. Or connected the Airport Express. Not both. How can I make it so that my computers can access the net (through my main wireless network) and stream music to Airport Express at the same time? I did plug the Airport Express into my modem with an ethernet cable; got a solid green light. Unplugged it and connected it back to my stereo. Same deal. Any help much appreciated.

Yes you can configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join your current wireless network. Configure the AX following the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • AX as client with third party modem/router

Like others, I'm having trouble getting my AX to join an existing network from my third party modem/router (in this case a Siemens SE 515 dsl). After 2 days of sifting posts, changing settings and reset after reset, I'm about to take the thing back or just toss it out the window. I really only want to use the AX for AirTunes but do want to be able to surf at the same time.
My modem/router is set as PPPoE with login details and PPPoE pass-through is enabled, as is NAT. The modem is set to get IP address automatically. WEP-128 is on and I've activated MAC access control (and am sure it's the correct id for the Airport). It's set for DHCP in the range 192.168.1.xx. WDS is activated and the router detects other devices around the place.
In Network settings on my Powerbook I've selected PPPoE and also entered the login details here. In the TCP/IP tab, IPv4 is automatically set to PPP and the computer gets an IP address but it's in 84.xxx... range. Internet access works fine when I use these settings.
Now, reset the AX, in Airport Admin I set it to client (I don't need to extend the network), entered the WEP key and selected the router network name from the pop-up menu. In the Internet tab I select DHCP, in music tab AirTunes is on and I've entered a speaker name. Click update, then...
    Nothing happens.
Well, not quite. The orange light on the AX is flashing. When I go into iTunes, the Airport is listed in the pop-up at bottom right but when I select it, iTunes says it is trying to connect and, after a while, fails. Airport Admin can no longer find the AX either.
My hunch is that this is something to do with IP addresses but I really have no idea. Any hints gratefully received.

    1. your modem/router should not have "PPPoE pass-through" enabled. The PPPoE connection with your ISP must be handled by the modem/router itself - not by your Mac. The modem/router should be functioning as a NAT router, and all the wireless clients (like your Mac and the Airport Express) of the modem/router should be connecting to it using DHCP.
    2. I don't know why you activated WDS on the modem/router. It isn't necessary, and whatever WDS flavor is supported by this modem/router won't be supported by the Airport Express. Turn it off.
    3. On the Powerbook, in System Preferences->Network->Show Airport - (a) under the PPPoE tab the box to "connect using PPPoE should NOT be checked and (b) under the TCP/IP tab the only selection should be to configure using DHCP.
Before proceeding to the next steps, you must now make sure your Mac is still able to access the internet wirelessly.
    4. Do a factory default reset of the Airport Express. Temporarily switch wireless network connections on the Mac from your modem/router to that of the Airport Express. Run the Airport Admin Utility. In the Airport Admin Utility, select the mode to be "join an existing wireless network". Below that, type in the SSID of your modem/router. Enter the same WEP type and WEP key as used on your modem/router. Make any other configuration changes required under the Music tab, then update settings to the Airport Express. When finished, switch the wireless network connection on the Mac back to that of your modem/router.
    5. If you still have trouble, remove all security (MAC address filtering and WEP) from your modem/router and see if you can then get the Airport Express to connect as a client.

  • HT2497 do I connect my airport express to my modem via the WAN port and then connect to my imac via ethernet cable?

Do I connect my airport express to my modem via the WAN port and then connect from airport express to my imac with ethernet cable? Is that how you "hard wire" the connection? Because when I do that, I still can't get online. Thanks.

What is the make & model of your modem?
You pretty much stated the correct wiring. There should be an Ethernet cable connected between the modem and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Bridge mode for Airport Express or DSL modem?

I bought a new DSL modem (Netgear Broadband ADSL modem DM111PSP) to replace my old Westell.  I also bought the new Aiport Express station (2012 model) to create the WiFI network at home.  At the moment, the AE is in Bridge mode so that the DSL modem is on PPPoE to be the one assigning IP's for 3 portable Macs (2 on Wifi and 1 on Powerline->Ethernet).  My ISP is AT&T.
I wonder if  anyone can answer my following questions:
    1) When Apple claims that the AE can support up to 50 concurrent users using the Internet, does that also apply to the AE in Bridge mode?
    2) Can my ISP detect the fact that I have 3 computers with the current setup and start charging me more?
    3) What will happen if I put the modem in Bridge mode and AE in PPPoE?  Can my ISP still track the same info in (2)?
    Thank you so much.
My computers (1 MacBook Pro and 2 MacBooks) are all on OS 10.6.8.
    Gary

I thought AE cannot assign IP's once in Bridge mode.
That is correct. DHCP and NAT services are turned off when the AirPort Is configured in Bridge Mode.
If both modem and AE assign IP, would that create 'Double NAT' error?
Correct. Either the modem/router has to be in Bridge Mode and the AirPort handles DHCP and NAT.....or.....the modem/router handles DHCP and NAT and the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.
There are upsides and downsides to either approach. The simplest setup is to let the modem/router handle DHCP and NAT and configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode.
However, if you were planning to use the Guest Network feature of the new AirPort Express, then the modem/router must be configured in Bridge Mode and and the AirPort handles the DHCP and NAT.

  • Using Airport Express without a modem

Can you set up a wireless network using Airport Express without a modem? I want set up a wireless network at work. Can I just plug in the ethernet cable on my desk to Airport Express for it to work? Thanks.

Hello Low77. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can you set up a wireless network using Airport Express without a modem?
Yes. By default, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will create a stand-alone wireless network which you can connect up to 10 wireless clients for file or printer sharing.
Can I just plug in the ethernet cable on my desk to Airport Express for it to work?
You do not need to plug it into an Ethernet cable for it to work. However, if you require network or Internet access, the Ethernet cable needs to be connected to a network or have Internet access.

  • Airport Express icw wireless modem and B&O sound system

    Hi all,
I am considering buying the Airport Extreme. Main reasons are:
    1) playing iTunes via the sound system and
    2) wireless connection possibility to external hard disc.
I will use it in combination with my current wireless modem and B&O sound system.
From where my internet enters the house it is quite a distance to the sound system location that I can not easily (esthetically acceptable) connect to the sound system.
    My main questions are:
    1) Is Airport Extreme the right system to buy?
    2) Can the Airport Extreme audio output signals be combined through 1 cable for both iTunes and cable radio?
    3) Can I use the Airport Extreme device for playing movies on my television as well?
I am quite an amature if it comes down to setting up networks and systems, so all (low key) tips are more than welcome. Many thanks in advance!
    Kindest regards,
    Robbie W

    Ummm.....
The express will not extend your modem, since Apple hasn't shipped its own brand modem for years. You can't extend third party routers.  You can try a few tricks if you have ethernet cables though...

  • Airport with third party wireless router?

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers? I have Verizon FIOS and would like to use my Airport Extreme base station and Airport Express unit on my home network. I have successfully set up Airport Express in my office as a WDS. Can Airport Extreme base station be set up as part of a WDS?
    Thanks for any insights.

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers?
No industry-wide standard exists for WDS, so it is impossible to predict how Apple's implementation of it (or anyone else's for that matter) will interface with other equipment.
Wikipedia has a short but fairly comprehensive list of third party equipment that allegedly support WDS. Missing from the list is a Linksys access point, which I nonetheless successfully configured as a WDS remote station. They call it "repeater mode".
    Yes Verizon FiOS is absent.

  • Using airport express with 3com modem/router

    Hi all,
    I have a 3COM modem/wifi router with serial code 3CRWE754G72-A.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and to my dismay the wifi does not work with my Router (I have all latest updates etc.). I have no idea why, but apple support say its cos my router is crap and they dont support 3rd party routers (they checked my MBP and found nothing wrong with it apparently, connects to apple base stations no probs)... there are loads of threads on this topic of incompatible wifi routers with the MBP in the MBP discussion area so I wont go into details on that.
My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use? From what I understand usually you can use it to extend your wireless network by adding it as a client to the existing network. However I am suspicious if it will pickup on my 3com wireless network... my MBP doesnt so I wouldnt be surprised if this didnt either!! Is it somehow possible to disable the wifi on my 3com router and connect it directly via ethernet to an airport express, and use the airport express solely for createing the wifi network?
    Any other suggestions welcome!

My question is: is there any way the airport express could be of use?
The only thing the AirPort Express (AX) could possibly do is join the wireless network created by that router as a client. This would only give you the ability to use the AX's USB printer port and AX's audio output. This would NOT give you the ability to use the AX's Ethernet port.
If your MacBook Pro can't join the wireless network provided by that device, the AX probably can't either.
The AX can not be used to extend the network provided by that device nor can the AX's Ethernet port be enabled to allow you to connect your MacBook Pro. Both of these require compatibility with Apple's WDS which that device does not have.

  • Do I need to plug my airport express into a modem to use it as its own router?

I want to use my airport express as a router. Do I need to plug it into a modem to do this or can I do this without pluging anything into it.

The AirPort Express is a wireless router only, with no modem on board.
You will need to connect the Express to a broadband modem if you want to be able to access the Internet.

  • Airport Express Bigpond USB modem

I just bought the airport express to stream music. I set up the network and it worked great. However when I went to connect to the internet I had lost the connection, I have telstra's Next G modem connected directly to my laptop via USB. I then went to the Network and Sharing Centre(i have Vista) and shared the internet connection which allowed me to connect to the internet but now itunes wont stream to my speakers. The network with the airport express is still connected and visable it just wont work. If I disconnect from the internet it will start working again. Can anybody help so I can get both of the networks working at the same time. thanks

hi..i was looking for the answer to something else...and remembered i saw this...since i had this question once..and never got back to it.
this is cut and paste so kudus to some other guy
"You can rearrange the order of network devices in System Preferences. Make sure the 3G modem is at the top and then your airport connection. That should force internet over 3G and still let you stream via airTunes".
    Cheers

  • Connecting airport express to zyxel modem

I connect to the internet via DSL using a Zyxel 660 HN DSL router. This modem is also the base station of my wireless network. I am now trying to connect my USB Printer (HP LaserJet 1320) to this wireless network using an Airport Express Base Station (Model A1264, 2008). I am able to set up the Airport Express Base Station by connecting it to my MacBookPro with a LAN-cable and using the Airport Utility (Version 6.1). The Airport Express Base Station is then in the proper operating mode (green light on), and my router detects it as one of the WLAN-clients. However, if I connect my printer with the USB cable to the Airport Express Base Station, my computer (which is connected to the WLAN as well) is unable to see the printer. Can anyone give some advice how to solve this problem?
As an aside, I also enabled AirPlay on the Airport Express Base Station, but iTunes on my MacBook is not showing the Speakers button at the bottom of the iTunes window.
Somehow, the Airport Extreme Base Station seems to be connected to the WLAN properly, but it is not recognized by other WLAN clients and its functionality cannot be used. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am going to guess.. you are talking about cable modem.. linksys DPC-3008
You plug express into the ethernet port of the modem.. setup the Express to dhcp for WAN.
Then you need to power cycle the cable modem to get rid of the previous connection.. whatever connected before the express will take the public IP and the modem will not release it until the lease is renewed.. to force that renewal a power cycle of the modem is required.. it can take up to 20min for the ISP equipment to give up the old MAC address and renew the lease.. Some ISP you will even need to phone up and ask them to reset the port.

  • Can I use my Airport Express with Motorola Modem SB6121?

I just bought a Motorola Arris SB6121 Modem and wonder if I can use my Airport Express at my main router. I live in a condo so it is not a huge space.
    Thanks!

After using a functioning system for 2 years, I am no longer able to connect through Airport Extreme base station to internet with Motorola SB6121. Hard wire connection with Motorola works fine. Connection to wireless network works fine (but without internet connection). Have flashing yellow light on Extreme. Have been online to diagnose and fix, but without success. Here's what I've tried. Disconnected power to Motorola and Extreme for 30 minutes. Disconnected coax cable from wall and from Motorola. Disconnected Ethernet cable from Motorola and Extreme. All of these steps were simultaneous.
Then 1) reconnected power to Motorola, 2) reconnected coax cable to wall and Motorola, 3) connected ethernet cable from Motorola to my PC laptop and 4) got to the internet just fine. Then I reconnected power to Extreme, 2) moved ethernet cable from laptop to Extreme, but 3) no internet connect available (altho wireless network is working and I am connected). Also I have tried plugging the ethernet cable into both the <--> and "O" ports on the Extreme without any benefit.
In Control Panel and Network and Sharing Center I see my connection to my wireless network, but no internet connection. When I connect Motorola to laptop with ethernet cable, I see "network 8" with internet access/connection. My laptop's wireless feature is on.
I downloaded and installed Airport Utility, but it does not see my Extreme either by wireless or cable connection directly to the Extreme)..
Do I need to "reset" Extreme?  BTW, I am a renter and the Extreme and Motorola have been in the apartment for 2 years working fine. I don't have any documentation for the Extreme that I might need for resetting. I hope it will do this automatically. Also, I am getting cable TV through Comcast. I do not have phone service through Comcast (cell only).
OK, this is probably more than you need to know, but I wanted to give you all the information toi address my basic question, "how do I get to the internet through my home wireless system?"
BTW, when cable connected to Motorola, speed shows 100 mbps.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • Airport Express and TWC Modem - extremely slow

I hope someone can help! I have a cable modem from Time Warner. When I'm directly connected, it flies, but once I connect to through the Airport Express, it slows down to a crawl.
I have the new Express and have done the hard reset several times. I believe it's something to do with the settings but can't seem to get them to work together.
    Any ideas?

I seem to have the same problem. Everything was fine up until the 10.5.4 update--I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Anyway, my browsing began to slow when connected to AE. I've tried various browsers and they all began to function the same way--slow.
So I connected my cable modem directly to my iMac and behold, I was browsing the net at lightning speeds again.
I've had my AE for a few months, I'm wondering if it's the AE or Leopard. Also, I'm wondering if I can return it to the Apple store and get a new one?
