Airport Express + TV + Bowers & Wilkens MM-1 Speakers Setup

I am interested in purchasing the Airport Express and need some help before I purchase to make sure its the right solution....
I currently have the MacMini, 40" LCD HDTV, Bowers & Wilkens MM-1 speakers and want to add an express to use airplay with my iphone & macmini but I also want to use those same speakers with my TV for audio and unsure on how to hook everything up to share the same speakers between the airport express and the TV.
Anybody with any know how please post your feedback with instructions on what I may need for this solution
Thanks in advance!

I have more or less a similar setup, I would recommend an Apple TV2 to add to the TV though, it simplfies the cable situation whilst also providing airplay. My setup is speakers and amp connected to TV, ATV2 connected to TV and iMac for streaming to it. If you use an express you would need a 3.5mm jack to connect to speakers, and then unplug them when you wanted to use them for the TV, which is annoying. The Apple TV is only £20 more expensive and does the same job plus other features (except the wifi network part). But if you didn't mind you could plug the speakers into whichever source you needed.

  • Problems Setting-up Airport Express to Play Music thru External Speakers

    Hi:
I have an HP dv6500z laptop connected to an HP printer C6280 via LinkSys wireless network using the LinkSys 54G router and PrintServer. It works fine.
I purchased an Apple Airport Express and want to connect it to this network so that I can play songs from within iTunes through external powered speakers wirelessly. The powered speakers are connected to the Airport Express (AE).
The AE is plugged into the AC outlet and the speakers are turned on. The AE is roughly 10 feet away from the laptop/router, just across the room. The AE's
LED is flashing amber (It does not yet recognize the network). I installed the Airport Utility from the enclosed CD, downloaded all patch upgrades and it installed successfully.
Now, how do I tell the Airport Utility to recognize and connect to my existing LinkSys network, so that the AE recognizes it ? The instructions are not clear on this note...they say to run the Airport Utility and then follow the on-screen instructions. The instructions tell you that you will lose your wireless network connection if you continue...and you do if you try.
The same information comes up if you try to do a manual install.
How do I connect the AE to an existing network ? This information seems to be missing. If I go to the AirPort Utility Help and search and search on Setting Up AirPort Express, it tells me the following:
Connect your stereo or powered speakers to your AirPort Express using the mini-jack on the top side of your AirPort Express, and then plug your AirPort Express into a wall outlet.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows.
Click Music in the toolbar, and select the Enable AirTunes checkbox.
Problem: What Music in What toolbar ? I do not see this...
Enter an iTunes speaker name and password. This is the name displayed in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window.
Problem: Where does this information come from
If you're setting up your AirPort Express for the first time, choose Assist Me from the Base Station menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
It seems like something is missing from the setup.
Aaah...Just for the heck of it, I went under Base Station > Assist Me
and told it to continue even though the dialog box said it would change the network.
It displayed a tabbed dialog box where I could configure the AirPort Express, including a tab named Music.
    Note:
The following two items are listed in Apple's on-line Help inside of Airport Utility, and on the web, yet I did not see them inside of Airport Utility when trying t oconfigure my AE.
I did not see a checkbox to check, named Enable AirTunes.
I did not see any place for entering the name and password for my speakers.
I followed all of the instructions and things looked like they were going well until I clicked Finish.
Them it said something like it could not save the settings..try again.
Well, I did, but when I brought Airport Utility back up, it kept saying that it could not detect the AE,
and when I went under the Base Station menu, all items were grayed-out, so I couldn't do anything.
Please help... the instructions need to clearer and more detailed.
    Thanx, Dale
HP dv 6500z Windows Vista New Airport Express

    Hi:
    Thanx for your reply.
After several more hours of trial & error over the weekend,
I finally have the Green Light (LED) on the Airport Express.
And it stays green, even if I unplug it from the AC outlet,
and plug it back in later. I have the green light so this
tells me that I have gotten past one hurdle.
OK...in order to get this far, I had the AE wired to the
laptop or LinkSys router via an Ethernet cable. How do
I go about making this a "wireless" connection. LinkSys
told me how to take my laptop from a hardwired connection
to wireless, but it doesn't address the issue when you have
a 3rd party device hardwired that you want to make wireless.
    Side Note:
I have not tried this yet, but I found a note on the web that
stated something like this: after getting the green light,
this guy then disconnected the Ethernet cable from the AE,
unplugged the AE from AC power for a few minutes, plugged it
back in to AC power, and voila! ... he was wirelessly on his network.
OK...let's assume that my AE is now on the wireless network.
What type of special settings do I need to make inside of iTunes
in order to get sound to the speakers.
I have my powered speakers recognized by iTunes...I can select them.
But, it appears that something may be blocking my AE from talking to
my network...I keep getting a pop-up box from Symantec saying that it
is detecting a "virus" (for lack of a better term) at the IP address
that I set my AE to. Oh, yes...that's another question...
When manually setting up the AE, I have my router network's IP address
(dotted-quad) in the list of parameter settings, but...near the top of
the list, the Airport Utility software asks for your AE's IP.
Well, what is it ? Nobody has told me ... Where do I get it from ???
Or...do I assign an arbitrary value to it based on the dotted-quad below ?
The router has an IP address of something like 192.168.1.xyz. I know what
the xyz is for the router but, what number do I use here for the AE, or
does it matter as long as it isn't being used by another network device.
    My network is static.
So, after using a number not used by my network elsewhere (that I am aware of,
and...inserting a $ (to specify hexadecimal format)in front of my encryption password, NOT the router password (they intermix the naming of these) I finally managed to get the Green Light on the AE. Note: I am using the WEP-64 bit encryption which is also refered to a "40 bit" (No..not hexadecimal..$40 = 64) which is 40-bit to which a random 24 bit is added to give you 64 bit encryption.
    To summarize;
I appear to have the AE configured via hardwire (I have the green light).
In iTunes, I can see and select my powered-speakers from the drop-down menu in the lower right corner, but i am s not yet streaming (hearing) the music.
It appears that Symantic may be knocking me off the network, or not letting the AE talk to the laptop/router...I have not yet tried this, but another nugget that I found on this site says to go to System Preferences (where?), click on the Firewalls tab, click Advanced , and uncheck "Block UDP Traffic".
Is this what may be blocking my AE talking to the laptop/router ?
Any help/feedback would be appreciated...Thank you.
I'm getting close...but no cigar (yet).

  • Airport express disappears from list of multiple speakers

Since upgrading Mac OS X (to 10.5.7) and iTunes (to 8.2) my airport express remote speakers have not been working as reliably: The remote speakers tend to disappear from the "multiple speakers" list when they haven't been used for a few minutes. This is extremely annoying and takes away from the otherwise very smooth operation of iTunes Remote.
The current workaround for this is to quit and restart iTunes. This is NOT a solution since it requires users to go to the computer that iTunes is running on and to intervene manually. The express is hanging off a wireless network set up on an Airport Extreme. Normally, I control iTunes remotely with my iPhone so I can change what's playing and so on.

New observation: the problem seems to depend on whether you have a WDS network. Things are working much better for me since I reconfigured my network. Previously I used the express to extend the network set up on the extreme. After changing things so the express is just hanging off the extreme's wireless network iTunes has not been losing the express or speakers anymore. In fact, I can unplug the speakers, move them to a different part of the house, and often I can just plug them back in and they start playing again. Every now and then I have to stop and start them but I can do it with Remote where before I had to go to the computer that iTunes is playing on.
Eventually I will be wanting to extend the network again to take the laptop outside on the decks since without WDS the network ends pretty close to the house's walls. I hope Apple will fix the original problem by then.

  • Airport express wont play through all 5 speakers in my system

I currently have an aiprport express an its completely updated and everything but when i try to stream using airplay from my computer it will cut out on 2 of my 5 speakers. Any ideas?

If you are missing a channel when you plug in the headphones, there is either an internal problem with the jack itself, or some other internal issue on the AirPort Express.
Try a factory default reset if you have not tried that before.
Power down the Express at least 15-20 minutes
    Hold in the reset button
Continue holding the reset button while you plug the Express back in to power
Keep holding the reset button until you see the amber light being to blink more quickly and then release the reset button
Try the configuration again. If no luck after a few tries, I'm afraid that the evidence points to a defective AirPort Express that will need to be replaced.
If it's out of warranty and you are handy with tools and electronic repairs, it might be worth a try to carefully saw the case open along the center seam on all sides and then look for a loose or broken internal connection. It's a real long shot.

  • Since upgrading to OS Lion, airport express can't see any remote speakers to pair with. Why?

My iTunes no longer gives me the selection for remote speakers. I hav an airport extreme and airport express. I have solid green lights for both. Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

ML will show the AVCHD as a pkg, so you are not able view the directories like BDMV-->Stream-->MTS. You can right click AVCHD file, then choose show package contents. you will see BDMV, then you right click BDMV to choose show package, you will see stream folder, just do it again, you will find MTS files. Next time if you want to check the MTS files you just need to do above again. right click AVCHD....
Another way, rename AVCHD to AVCHD.mts then do it same with BDMV and Stream folder, it will let you see MTS files after that. Those mts files will keep showing on your mac next time.
    Hope it helps

  • Apple Airport Express in relation to AirPlay and speakers?

If I buy a airport express can I connect it to my home wifi (not plug an ethernet cable into it) and plug a pair of speakers into it, and then play music from my iPhone 5 with AirPlay onto the speakers?
Also will the airport express boost my wifi speed/range wherever it is place?
Lastly, if I use a aux splitter, can I plug another pair of speakers/stereo into the airport express, so it then has 2 speaker systems plugged into it, and it will still work the same? (By playing music with through wifi into the speakers)

If I buy a airport express can I connect it to my home wifi (not plug an ethernet cable into it) and plug a pair of speakers into it, and then play music from my iPhone 5 with AirPlay onto the speakers?
Yes, yes, and yes. Note: The speakers that you would plug into the Express' audio port would need to be self-powered.
Also will the airport express boost my wifi speed/range wherever it is place?
It can, potentially, increase the Wi-Fi range but only if the router that it is extending is another AirPort router.
Lastly, if I use a aux splitter, can I plug another pair of speakers/stereo into the airport express, so it then has 2 speaker systems plugged into it, and it will still work the same?
The audio port on the Express was designed to support a single device. However, and I haven't tried this myself, it may work as you intend to use it with a "aux splitter."

  • Airport Express 'names' not updating in Itunes 'speakers'

    Love the iphone remote app
purchased a few airport expresses -
    Named them - Renamed them
BUT itunes is NOT picking up the renames -
any clues on how I 'refresh' the speaker list names in itunes?

It has a separate name for the AirPort itself and the "iTunes Speaker Name." Use the AirPort Utility and click "Manual Setup" for the AirPort Express, then click the Music icon in the toolbar at the top. From there you can change the name it shows in iTunes.

  • Connect airport express (my printer) to a new broadband setup (Wi Fi)

We just dropped our DSL and got broadband through our cable company. Motorola is now the WiFi in our house but Airport Express is used for our printer (making it a wireless printer). The old set up for the printer used a household network called Apple network a88211. If I switch from the motorola to the Apple Network, I can get the printer to work wirelessly. Can I get Motorola to read the Apple Network a88211 in my home?

If the Motorola device you speak of is simply a cable modem, then you should configure the AirPort Express device to connect to the Internet using Ethernet and DHCP. Once you have made the connection, everything should work as before, although you may need to set up the printer share anew.
Be sure to power-cycle the cable modem before connecting the AirPort Express device.
If the Motorola device is a wireless router as well as a cable modem, then you probably need to configure everything differently.

  • Airport Express connection to XP using WPA, working setup

I've been trying to get the Airport Express working with my XP laptop for several days. I used to use a Netgear wireless router to make my wired network wireless (ie. used it as an access point) and wanted to see if the AE could be set up the same way.
I've had the same problems everyone's talking about - my Macbook connected almost immediately (I set up AE to use the same SSID and password as my old wifi network) but my XP laptop would not. It didn't make sense that it was a PC vs Mac situation as I was tempted to think.
I started the setup informed by my experience with the Netgear wifi router configured as an access point, which called for the wifi router to be configured with a static IP outside the range of the DHCP of the main router, and the wifi router configured to NOT be a DHCP server. So I did the same with the AE. It didn't work. I didn't want to think that my AE was defective since I was able to set up the print server, working from all computers, including my wired PCs.
The thing that I finally noticed today is that though I had configured the AE to have an IP manually assigned (through Airport Admin), my main router was also assigning an IP address to the AE - the net effect of which was that the AE had 2 IPs assigned to it in the network. When I noticed this I tried changing the AE configuration to receive a DHCP IP (instead of manually configuring with a static IP), and then configured the main router to statically assign the AE an IP, thus ensuring that it has one IP address. It's working now.
Hopefully this will be of help - I feel your pain.

Yes - I installed latest available firmware version on the access point. No change in behaviour. Connectiion from XP notebook tp AP works fine permanentely btw.
    Thank's,
    Thomas

  • Airport express not being found after going through setup wizard

I restore the airport express to factory conditions by pressing the reset button while plugging it in and then continue pressing the reset button for a further 10 seconds.
I open airport utility and see my airport express in the left column. I click the setup wizard and perform the following:
    I click:
    1. I want airport express to join my current network
    2. I want airport express to wirelessly join my current network
    3. I select wpa2 personal and enter my wireless password for my router
    4. I click the update button. Message says: "The settings for this airport express have been successfully updated. you can close this window now or wait for this airport express to restart
after about 3 minutes or so I get this message:
"airport utility was unable to find your apple wireless device after restarting. the settings for this apple wireless device have been succesffully updated, but there was a problem joining the wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. you may need to select your netowrk from the airport menu and try again."
    any thoughts?

    HI
are you sure you are using the correct security type for the main network, when it asks you, after selecting the network you want to join? If you chose the wrong one the airport utility will not tell you, it just won't find it after restart.
check it in network pref/advanced tab
also check the firmware version of the express in airport utility/manual setup/summary tab

  • Using Bose system to drive remote speakers via Airport Express / iTunes

I want to connect my Airport Express which is configured for remote speakers in iTunes to my Bose system. My question is which input on the Bose Lifestyle 50 system do I use; ie which input on the "multi-room interface" do I connect to the AE. I think it must be the "aux" but before I buy a suitable cable I would like to be sure.

Use a mini-jack to double RCA. That is all that I used. In the past I have used my APExpress and used the audio out port and all I needed was a mini-jack to double RCA.I have a TV, and a DVD player interfaced through my Denon AVR driving Bose Acoustimass 10 speakers.

    Wirelessly
Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • Remote speakers on AirPort Express not found

Remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express network can't be found by iTunes or Airfoil. The previously available drop down menu on iTunes and Airfoil are no longer present.
Airport express is connected to fibre optic cable, MacBook is using Wifi to stream music from computer to remote speakers.
The system was working fine until some recent Apple updates that auto installed via software update.
Would welcome any help with this.

Found idea of unplugging airport express, closing Itunes, the replugging teh airport express and restart itunes. The speakers are showing once more.
Thought others may find this useful.

  • Airport Express connected but keeps disappearing from itunes

    HI,
I have an airport express which is connected to some speakers and I'm using Airplay to stream music from Itunes to the speakers.
However the speakers keep disappearing from itunes.  If I reboot the Airport Express they reappear, then have a few hours will disappear again!
In all cases I can connect to the Airport using the configuration utility and I can ping the device, so I don't think it's a problem with the Wifi, just with Airplay.  Also the Airport express is only 4 meters from the Access Point.
I have two windows 7 machines, both using itunes (latest version) and a MAC - all machines have the same difficulty with the speakers intermittently disappearing.
Also on the network I have 2 x TVs and a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin - all working fine with Airplay.
The Airport Express is on version 7.5.2 and is using a static IP address.
    Any Thoughts anyone?

Did you disconnect the cable modem's power supply before re-connecting it and then attaching the AirPort Express device? Be sure to pull the power spike—don't just use an on/off switch.
On some older cable modems, it's necessary to leave the power cable unplugged for up to 12 hours or so.

  • Is it possible to use Airport Express as a repeater and as an airplay device at the same time?

    Hi,
I am using airplay with airport express stations in combination with conventional speakers for my home entertainment. Works great. Only thing is that I have a massive block of concrete in my flat. Is it possible to use one of my express stations as a repeater and at the same time as a streaming device for airplay? Thanks!

Sure it works only with apple routers? Cause than I could stop trying.
Yes, it's proprietary like everything else Apple. You could look at this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006BBYXPA/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550946469&ref=asc_ df_B006BBYXPA
I have had great success installing these for BT Home Hubs and VM Superhubs.
@JoeMY - If it is "joined" to the FritzBox then it won't work, it only works with Apple routers connected via Ethernet or as the main router.
