Airport express used as a line-in source to Sonos

I play my i-Tunes library (play lists) wirelessly by using an Airport Express unit plugged in as a line-in source to my Sonos system. This has never been a problem, up to the point where recently I had to re-install everything on my laptop after it crashed.
Now when I play i-tunes in the same way, there's a break/interruption (a fraction of a second) in the music every 60 seconds ... I can't work out why this is happening.
The Sonos system on its own works fine.
Any one have the same problem? What's causing it?

I just joined the Sonos world (less than three weeks ago) and love the system. I'm wondering why you are using the line-out from the AE to the line-in of the Sonos? When you use the line-in, you limit what you can control from the Sonos controller or iPhone/iPod touch app.
As you know, one of the Sonos units must be connected to your network with an Ethernet cable, and the Sonos system creates its own "mesh" network for communicating among Sonos units. Do you have your Sonos unit connected to your AE by Ethernet cable? If so, does your system look like this:
modem--> router (by Ethernet cable) --> Airport Express (wirelessly) --> Sonos (by Ethernet cable), or do you have the Sonos directly attached to the router by Enternet cable?
I initially set up my Sonos system by using an AE to connected directly to the Sonos unit. When I called Sonos Tech Support about a separate issue (and they were amazing), the guy said that some people using the AE have no problems, and others do, it depends on how well the network runs. I've changed to a direct Ethernet connection from the router to the Sonos for other reasons.
If you can connect your Sonos by an Ethernet cable directly to your Router, it may solve your problem. Also, you really should have your Sonos system connect to your computer hosting iTunes rather than through the line-in on your Sonos -- you will get direct access to your playlists, etc. Just remember that once you make a change to iTunes, whether it's adding songs or changing playlists -- you must (1) close iTunes so it updates the XML file (the data file re your songs and playlists); and (2) from Sonos, update the music index -- once you do that, Sonos will see all of the songs/playlists. Also, if you keep your iTunes library in a place other than the default folder, you need to tell Sonos where it is, and also allow it to point to the default folder for the XML file (if you don't Sonos will not see all the music or playlists).
If all else fails, call Sonos -- once in the queue for service, you have an option of having them call you back. The tech will give you a web page and password to give them access to your screen, and they should be able to solve your problem.
Good luck!

How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities? Seems like there isn't an option to set this up.  Normally you could add/set up this in the airport setup assistant- but that doesn't exsist any longer.
    Thanks for any suggestions

How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities?
Unfortunately you can't, since Apple dropped support of the older AirPorts with AirPort Utility 6.x.
Using some workarounds....not supported by Apple.....you might be able to download and install an older version of AirPort Utility that would allow you to administer the older AirPort.

Since updating to Yosemite my airport express (used for airplay) connects for a short period then drops, the error message "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “Kitchen”. The host cannot be reached."  Has anyone else had this problem

I'm having the same issue.  Haven't found a workaround.  I use a main TimeCapsule as my main router, also have another TimeCapsule that extends the network, three Airport Express and an AppleTV.  For whatever reason, the two AirportExpress that I have in a different rooms cut out.  I only have 600 square foot apartment so it's not that big, the signal should be strong enough.  Airport Utilitiy reports the signal strength to be strong on all devices.
I'm using all new equipment, a new MacPro for my music, new TimeCapsules, new Airport Express, new everything with the latest Yosemite software.  Very frustrating.  My Airplay used to work very nice and now I'm constantly having issues and restarting my network.  I did a fresh install of all my software on my MacPro when I got it in January so it's not as if it's an old machine with old software, everything is new within the last 6 months.
The only workaround I found so far is to unplug the devices and to plug them back in.  Since upgrading to Yosemite, I'm restarting my Airport Express at least twice a week.  Very annoying.

  • Can't connect to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54g?

I am having problem connecting to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54G, under the following circumstances.
    Here's my setup.
I am using Linksys WAG200G modem/wireless router in the studies. My house is fairly big and very weak signal in living room. Hence I added Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander in living room.
I have two HiFi. One in studies and the other in living room. macbook and external HDD where I store all my musics sit in studies.
I use Airport Express (AE1) to stream music from macbook to studies HiFi. Works fine.
So I connect AE1 to living room HiFi. Macbook still in studies. The problem is iTunes cannot connect to AE1 now. However I still able to detect AE1, open/change settings using Airport Utility on macbook in the studies.
Now I bring macbook to living room. AE1 works!
What I intend to setup is,
    1. WAG200G, macbook and external HDD in my studies.
    2. AE1 connect to studies HiFi. I am planning to get another Airport Express for living room HiFi.
    3. Control the playlist using iPhone Remote and listen music in living room.
    Question:
    1. Did iTunes connect directly to Airport Express without going thru network router?
    2. How should I setup Airport Express in this case?
Appreciate anyone who can help me on this. Thank you.

    pss.
actually, is it possible to do what i'm trying to do... the guy in the Apple store said that i can connect to the Netgear router for my internet connection, and Airfoil can separately connect to the Airport Express to play music...
the way i've set it up so far, i can do either, but i can't do both... or do i need to somehow connect both wireless stations together...??

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • Have installed Airport express using windows vista, unit blinks green, selected the speakers from itunes but get no sound at all, even if I put a headphone in the airport express. Pls advise

Have installed Airport express using windows vista, unit blinks green, selected the speakers from itunes but get no sound at all, even if I put a headphone in the airport express. Pls advise

If the AX is working properly, it should not show up in your list of available networks (since it is "joined" to your router). Have you unplugged and replugged your AX? Unplugged and, after a minute, replugged your router? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router? (if so, disable it to see if the AX works ... it will broadcast its MAC address to the router, and you can add it.) Is your firewall turned on? Turn it off and see if you can access Airtunes. You will have to open a port in your firewall if that is the case.
The AX should have the same network name as your router the wireless tab. When it shows up, what name is it broadcasting?

  • Airport Express (using AirTunes) with D-Link 614+ Router

I have the following issue with my Airport Express not able to stream audio to iTunes. My configuration is an existing D-Link 614+ Wifi Router and I joined the Airport Express to my existing wifi network.
I found a thread that says D-Link routers uses the 192.168... IP range and Airport Express uses the 10.0... IP range. I followed the advice and used the workaround to reset the Airport Express to also an IP in the 192.168 range.
The light turns green on the airport express, but I can't see the remote speaker button on iTunes (version 6.0.1). I am able to go into my router and see that the Airport Express received an IP = 192.168.0.3. But using my iBook and the Airport Utility, I can't see the Airport express, but if I choose "other" and type in the IP address, I am able to open and configure and checked the remote speaker box and name it "Living Room". I open up iTunes, but I still don't see the remote speaker button in the lower right? Does anyone know what might be the problem?
    Thanks,
    David

Too bad... because that would have been an easy solution to the problem if it had been the cause.
It seems you have properly configured your Airport Express as a client on the D-Link router's wireless network - otherwise your Mac would not be able to communicate with it at all. Unfortunately, it seems something is still blocking communication between the Airport Express and your Mac - which explains why (a) the Airport Admin Utility is unable to automatically "see" the location of your Airport Express and (b) iTunes is unable to automatically "see" the location of your Airport Express.
At this point, I cannot see an obvious cause to your problem (other than observing that D-Link router owners seem to be more than their share of obscure configuration issues). Some have commented that a setting on the D-Link router for "long" vs "short" preamble is an issue. I'm not really sure the "subnet switch" workaround described in Ewen's article is really that important, and on that theory you might try doing a hard reset of your Airport Express and following the alternative configuration instructions for the Airport Express as described in this discussion by David Lovell (also works for Macs):

  • Can I connect an A1084 model Airport Express using current version of Airport Utility

Can I connect an A1084 model Airport Express using current version of Airport Utility?

You will need an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.  That would mean that you need to have....or be able to borrow for 10-15 minutes......a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

  • HT4437 How to stream audio from a Safari web site to Airport Express using Airplay?

I'm able to stream audio from iTunes to my Airport Express using Airplay, but I can't stream audio from SoundCloud.com or any other system audio (not in iTunes) to the Airport Express. It is my understanding that AirFoil can do the trick but I do not want to spend 25$ if there is another way to do it.

    Good you got it sorted!
I was wrong about one thing.   Regardless of how I connect (e.g., wifi or Bluetooth), the Airplay icon in an Apple App turns orange when connected to a device, not blue as I mentioned above.  This is probably why you see blue in the Youtube app.
OK, I am retracting all my posts about the airplay icon and it's color scheme.
Seems as if the airplay icon on the music app is orange, but the airplay icon on the podcast app is blue. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to these color schemes or their significance, so I am abandoning all further speculation.

  • Is it possible to stream music to an Airport Express using a wired connection?

I have an Airport Express (V7.6.3) hooked up to the music system and have tried everything I can find but get fairly frequent dropouts.  Don't know if it's something the neighbours are running, but have pretty much given up trying to fix it.  I have an ethernet that I can get to the Airport, but I can't find any current answers on hooking it up wired rather than wireless. (All previous hints at it use pretty old version of Airport Utility with options that aren't there in the latest version.)
Simply, what I want to do is connect the Airport Express using ethernet rather than wireless.... possible?
    Thanks

Simply, what I want to do is connect the Airport Express using ethernet rather than wireless.... possible?
Yes of course, this is far preferable than connecting it to your router wirelessly, and doing so is almost guaranteed to fix your AirPlay dropouts.
Start by "hard resetting" your Express. If you connect it to your Extreme and try to reconfigure it without performing a "hard reset" first, the Express may cling to its wireless connection and bridge it back to your wired network, which will appear to crash everything and result in confusion.

  • PC cannot see wireless Airport Express using Ethernet on D-LINK DIR-655 Router

This seems to be a recurring issue going way back, but I have yet to see a real solution posted.
I am using my Airport Express (APX) to stream music from the computers on my network to my stereo via Airplay.  I have APX set up to wirelessly join my existing wireless network, which uses a D-Link DIR-655 router hooked to a Time Warner cable modem.  I can succesfully connect all of my wireless devices via Airplay, through iTunes to my APX, including two laptops and an iPhone.  However, my primary desktop PC, which does not have a wireless card is linked directly via ethernet cable to my D-Link router, and it is not able to see my APX.  I can, however, see the Airport Express from my PC through my Airport Utility by directly typing in the IP address.  Note that the  APX set-up option to allow Ethernet clients is checked.  I also noticed that my laptops will stop detecting the APX if I directly connect them to my D-Link router via Ethernet and turn off their wireless cards.  They will resume detecting APX when I turn their wireless connections back on.  So, bottom line, I am convinced that this is not a firewall problem.  Although I have tried every conceivable setting of my D-Link router and APX, I am convinced it is either a wireless to ethernet communication issue, or some obscure setting on APX.. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

I think I found the fix based on reading some Apple TV forums where several people were having the same problem.  Under Advanced Network settings in the D-Link setup, I just checked "Enable Multicast Streams" and that seemed to do the trick.

  • Airport Express and The T1 Line

    Hello,
For the passed 8 months my girlfriend and I have been using MacBooks, and we have flawlessly connected to the internet wirelessly through our airport express. At that time we were connected to a cable connection. We recently moved, and our new building provides us with a free T1 Line. After connecting the airport to the T1 Line the airport picks up a signal. According to my computer it is connected to the internet with full connectivity, however, while connected i can not access a single website. It is very deceiving, I'm not sure what to think about the situation. Any ideas?

  • How to set up an AirPort Express using static IP with internet provider limitations?

I am trying to set up an Airport Express to act as a wireless router (for multiple users to use) and I have some limitations with my ISP provider...my ISP provider restricts access to the internet for each device by only providing/issuing one IP address to one device (so they charge extra for multiple attached devices). So only one device can access internet via an IP address (they link the device's MAC address to that specific IP address, therefore limiting internet to only one device).
My ISP provider has provided me with the following info:
    - IP address
    - Subnet Mask
    - Router Address/Gateway
    - DNS servers (4 were provided)
    - domain name
I was trying to work around the ISP provider so I don't get charged using multiple devices so I was configuring my Airport Express with the info provided (ie-IP address, subnet mask, etc.) by configuring the IPv4 "manually" using a static IP. After plugging in this info using AirPort Utility, I was able to get access to the internet through wifi/Airport but only if the bridge is disconnected and only with one device at the time (trying to use another device to access the WIFI from the Airport Express gave me the error "can't access the internet because the IP address 128.xxx.xxx.xx" is already in use by another user).
I tried different angles such as changing the router mode to 'DHCP and NAT' (which doesn't yield any access to the internet on any device; I get the amber light blinking on the Airport device). When attempting to change the DHCP range, I get an error saying "the range provided doesn't work" (not exact wording).
The only other thing I haven't tried is to supply my ISP provider with the MAC address of the Airport Express device. Does anyone know if this would work and, if so, would I be able to use my Airport Express as a wireless router?
Unfortunately, I can't switch ISP providers as this provider is the only one I can use in the area (so frustrating!!) so I have to try to work around the system. Please help!!
Note: my Airport Express is the new model (I bought it a few weeks ago) and I have tried connecting to it using Airport Utility version 6.3.2 with Mac OS X 10.9.4 and OS X 10.9.2

  • Airport Express uses in Hotels

Can the Airport Express be used by plugging Ethernet cable in Airport Express and accessing internet by means of a wireless connection with my MacBook with a secure hotel connection? Normal internet connections requires a paid subscription.
It would be nice to know that my laptop in a hotel is not limited to desk-only internet access when connection is to a Ethernet cable.

Does this have anything to do with the different electrical frequency? Anyways, a mac genius showed me the reset button and that seemed to have remedied the problem.
Apple provides AirPort Express Base Stations to meet most electrical standards throughout the world. The base stations are shipped with the appropriate AC adaptor for their intended country of use. Depending on where in Europe you used your AX and where you had bought it, you may not even been able to plug it in without the proper adapter. In additions, certain countries use the full 1-14 channels in the 802.11g radio band, whereas the US only uses channels 1-11.
What you may have experienced may have nothing to due with electrical requirements, but instead, you attempted to access a 802.11g network that was operating outside the channels supported by your device.
