Airport express versus Cisco EPC3925 wifi modem

Not a technical person - I have just upgraded my Optus account (Australia) and have been supplied a new Cisco wi-fi modem as mentioned above. I was goint to purchase a new airport express and connect my mac directly to it via LAN and WAN and have the benefit of a direct connection and still be wifi for airplay etc. Now I am told this Cisco is a router and modem - do I just use it and plug my mac to it and hopefully it allows wi fi for airplay - or do I use it purely as a modem replacing the old one and purchase the new airport express? Which is method is more efficient?

Sorry I meant I have a Cisco DPQ3926 D3 WIFI modem

  • Trying to connect my airport express to my home WIFI

    Hi,
I have been trying to connect a airport express to my home WIFI connection for the purpose of wirelessly transmitting itunes to my Alfresco area using my iphone as a remote.
The problem i currently have is that the airport does not seem to pick up my wireless broadband.
My router is a Netgear dgnd3700.
The procedure i followed so far is : 1. Reset the airport back to factory settings.
                                                       2. Plug the ethernet cable in and open airport utility.
                                                       3. Tick the circle saying " join existing network ". Here's the problem, my wireless network does not show up.
I can type in the name of my network and also the password but the airport is not picking up the signal .... i cant choose a network.
I can create a new network no worries and connect devices to it but that's not what i'm after. I'd like to join my existing network so i can transmit itunes to my amp.
I've gone through the discussion forum but can't find an answer. I have also tried to manually set up the connection .. same result.
Any help would be great ... i'm about to give up and think it was abad idea ....

If it is the old G version Express you cannot use 6.3 utility.
You must use the 5.6 utility.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Tried to use my two airport express to extend my wifi network on a windows pc but no success

Tried to use my two airport express to extend my wifi network on a windows pc but no success

My two airport express base stations are 802.11n and i am triying to use them extend my wireless network which is using a D link wirless router as supplied my my ISP connected to TalkTalk network.
Unless the D-Link wireless router has Ethernet ports for each of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) to connect to, they will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of the D-Link.
Instead, when directly connected and reconfigured for a roaming network, these base stations CAN extend the range.
Please check out this Apple Support article on how to use AirPorts to extend a wireless network.
The key is to have both AXns configured as follows:
    As a bridge.
Each having a unique Base Station Name.
Both using the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type and password as the D-Link.
Each AXn to use a channel at least 3-5 channels apart both from each other and that of the D-Link.

  • Airport Express w/ 3Com 11g ADSL modem, wireless router

    Hello all,
I have been tring to set up my Airport Express with my 3Com ADSL modem and wireless router all-in-one using WDS.
Initially while experimenting the express was showing up in the Airport Admin Utility, I tried a few settings and it does not show up anymore. The amber light keeps blinking and thats that!
Is there anyway I can reset the airport express? Also, how should I use it to extend the range of my wireless connection through out my home?
Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
    Aditya

Is there anyway I can reset the airport express?
    KB 108044, Resetting AirPort Express
Also, how should I use it to extend the range of my wireless connection through out my home?
You can't wirelessly. The 3Com is not compatible with Apple's WDS which is the method for using the AirPort Express to wirelessly extend a network.
You can do it by connecting your AirPort Express via Ethernet to the 3Com.

    Merci

  • HT1731 How does one configure a NEW (unconfigured) AirPort Express to join a WiFi network that has a non-broadcasted SSID?

The following KB article assumes that the user has a configured AirPort Express:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
I reset my AirPort Express, because the SSID of the WiFi network changed and its name is not broadcast for security reasons.
When using the "AirPort Utility" ( not the "AirPort Admin Utility" – which is the wrong name of the application in the article! ) the application found the unconfigured AirPort Express, connected to the LAN via ethernet; However, when selected, the configuration "wizard" assumes that the user wants to configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi base station.
I selected the option to have the AirPort Express join a WiFi network; However, the AirPort Utility sent back an error, saying that a "Base station" ( WiFi network?! ) could not be found. Well, guess what? That's because the SSID of the network I want the AirPort Express to join.
    UGH!
...and the best part is that there is no other solution, but to run with the AirPort Utility's assumptions, configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi Base station, then follow the KB article's instructions ( which are not accurate ) to re-configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi client.
This is a really bad user experience, Apple.
Please try following your own instructions to see how fantastically they fail..then, re-write your KB articles.
    Thanks,
PS — If anyone knows of any easier methodologies, do tell. (That's the "question" part of this inquiry )
PPS — My Mac Pro, which I used to configure the AirPort Express, does not have WiFi.
PPPS — Why do all the articles that match searches for "AirPort Express" return articles that refer to "AirPort Base Stations"?!  Please, for the love of UX, be consistent!

    Here are the basic steps:
    Run the AirPort Utility
    Select the AirPort Express
    Click on Manual Setup
    Click on the AirPort icon
    Click on the Wireless tab
For Wireless Mode, select the "Join a wireless network" option
In the Wireless Network Name field, enter the SSID of the hidden wireless network you want the Express to join.
Select the approrpriate wireless security type in the Wireless Security window.
Enter the appropriate wireless security password for the hidden network.
    Click on Update.

  • Configuring my Airport Express and Cisco DCP3008 modem

    Hi,
I have an airport express version 7.6.1
and a cisco modem dcp3008 and having issues trying to connect the two. I have called cisco and they told me they would have to reconfigure it for 60 dollars. Is there anyone that has any suggestions for how I could manually figure this out?
My cable/internet service is Charter.... and they can't do anything ha ha.

You can effectively extend the Cisco's wireless network by creating a roaming network with both routers. Note that this would require that both routers be interconnected by Ethernet. Since the Express will perform a new role, be sure to perform a "factory default" reset on it so that it will be in its "out-of-the-box" configuration.

  • Setup an Airport Express without an ISP's modem

First, I have to thank you to everyone who is taking the time to help me with this.
I am planning to buy an Airport Express but I have a question and it is a deal breaker for me. Is it possible to setup the AE without my ISP's modem? here is my actual situation to make me more clear:
I am from México city and here there is no Apple retail Stores so no Apple Geniuses and the premum resellers are just... well dumb. So I contract an Internet service with a company named TELMEX and these guys gave me a Huawei Modem, it connects with an RJ11 plug an works as a router and WIFI access point, but this modem is just garbage, so I bought a CISCO Router and put them in bridge, the Huawei on PPoE and the CISCO just made work as local router. Everything went OK until I bought an Apple TV and an iPhone 5, the Airplay features are useless with my actual setup (just an example) apparently the CISCO's firewall block the ports that Airplay uses besides the CISCO doesn't have a N standar for the WIFI, so I decide to buy a new router. Before to continue, here is more or less my actual setup
INTERNET----> HUAWEI(no DHCP, no WIFI, rang 192.168.1.x,PPOE)----> CISCO(DHCP, WIFI, range 10.0.0.x) -----> All my devices
So my plan is to adquiere a Router that brings WIFI class N, enhanced security features and it works as a modem, I've seen other CISCO that could make the work but I don't want more problems with the "Apple features" such as Airplay caused by the port blocking. I know the Airport Express is already prepared to work with all the "Apple features" also attaching my sound device would be awesome, but if it doesn't works as a Modem I won't buy it. Here is the setup I want.
INTERNET---->Airport Express -----> All my devices
Does anyone knows if it is possible?
Again, thanks for the ssistance and sorry if my english is misspelled or wrong sentenced, it is not my born lenguaje.
Best regards and happy New Year.

Well that is dissapointing to be honest, well, thanks for the help. By the way, for what you saying applies to the newest model... right? cause I already know the old one wasnt able to do what I want.

  • Airport Express worked with previous ADSL modem, not working with new one

    hello all.
maybe the majority of you people won't be able to help me, since i am in Brazil.
    this is the story:
for the last 4 years i was a subscriber of the Speedy ADSL provider (in conjunction with the Terra content provider). the Sppedy service is part of the Telefonica telephone company and uses the regular telephone infrastructure to provide the ADSL signal thru telephone lines.
approximately 2 years ago i bought an Airport Express and set it up with the ADSL modem that Speedy provided to me. configuration was a breeze and it worked flawlessly since then.
as of last thursday (april 7th) i became a subscriber of the Ajato ADSL provider. the Ajato company is part of the TVA (cable tv) company and uses the TVA cable tv infrastructure to provide the ADSL signal.
the problem is: when i connect the Cisco DPC3000 ADSL modem to my Macbook via ethernet cable, i can surf the internet with Ajato with no problems. but when i connect the modem to my Airport Express (even though i have reset AE in order to clear the previous Speedy/Terra configuration), i get no internet in my home wireless network.
i know you guys don't have Ajato there, of course. but i suppose some of you might have faced similar problems in similar cable ADSL environments.
this said, any kind of help or hint is greatly appreciated.

First that Cisco DPC3000 is a cable modem, not a ADSL modem. You probably don't need the DSL configuration that you had before.
when i connect the modem to my Airport Express (even though i have reset AE in order to clear the previous Speedy/Terra configuration), i get no internet in my home wireless network.
How did you "reset" the AE? How is it configured now? You probably need a setting of "Connect Using:" "Ethernet", rather than the "PPPoE" setting you may have had before.
If everything else looks good, it's common to have to reset a modem when switching what device is connected to it. Try powering down the modem for a few minutes. If it has a reset switch, press that.

  • Airport Express not working with cable modem

I have an airport express that has been working perfectly.  I changed my internet provider and it suddently won't work -- no dns, no internet--even though other devices (including apple tv) are connecting with no problem.  [the cable modem (motorola) runs through a router to apple tv and the airport express.]  I have reviewed everything here and nothing is helping (powered down, disconnected everything, etc)  I am at a complete loss.  Please HELP.

Configuration is simple if you start from a factory default condition.  Connect the main Airport to AC power and to the Internet modem (or modem/router).  Open Airport Express on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  After confirming that it works, insert your desired administrative and WiFi passwords.

  • AirPort express and my Bell 2Wire modem?

I have been using the Bell 2Wire modem 2701 HG-G for many years now wirelessly with our MacBook Pro.  Never really encountered any connection issues.  My iPad uses WiFi and depending on where i am in the house will frequently have a poor connection or drop it all together.  I am wondering what my options are to rectify this. These are my thoughts:
    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help? Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?  or does it have to be directly connected to the modem in order to work.
What are my options for getting a stronger connection for my iPad?
    Thanx in advance,
    Amy

    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
Well, they did work for Apple, and would probably pick up a sales commission on any product that they sold, so you might want to to keep that in mind.
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help?
It would provide more wireless coverage in a remote area.....IF....it was connected back to your 2-Wire modem/router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?
Unfortunately, the Express would not be compatible with the 2-Wire for this purpose.
If you cannot add the Express using a wired Ethenret connection, check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they have a device that is compatible with the 2-Wire product.
There are other options, but that would involve buying 2 AirPort Express devices.....one to connect directly to your 2-Wire device and the other to "extend" the signal using wireless only.

  • WiFi Sync with iOS 5 doesn't work with Airport Express used as a wifi extender?

So in our apartment we have an Airport base station that doesn't reach all the way to the bedrooms, so we use an Airport Express as a wifi extender/repeater. The Wifi sync doesn't work when connected to the Airport Express. My iPhone and iTunes can't find each other. But if I'm sitting next to the base station it works just fine. Is there a workaround for this to get wifi sync working in my bedroom? I've updated both Airports to the latest firmware versions.
    Thanks
    Byron

Well, never mind. It magically started working.

  • HT4259 Does Airport Express extended network inherits wifi time restrictions?

    Hello:
I have created a network with my Airport Extreme and I've set up some wifi access time restrictions based on mac addresses. Now I want to extend this network adding an Airport Express at the living room. Everything went smooth but I'd like to know if I need to set up the restrictions at the Express or does it inherit them from the Extreme.
    Thanks!

Inherits from the Extreme as they are determined by the connected devices to the Wi-Fi.

  • I have a VOIP with LINGO (Primus).  Will Airport Express work with the VOIP modem??

I have been told how to set up with a regular LINKSYS wireless but can I use my VOIP modem with the AIRPORT EXPRESS?

I have one base station connected to my modem and another base station (AX) downstairs which is used as an extender.  can i plug my voip phone into that one
Yes, that sounds plausible. However, with an the extra overhead required to maintain an extended network, you may not have sufficient bandwidth for VoIP and voice quality may become an issue. Although it is worth trying out I would think.

  • Airport Express linked to a WIFI router Reconfiguring

I have just installed a new Netgear WIFI router usinging an XP desktop and need to recongigure my AE again to play itunes. The problems is I have forgotten how to do this. Someone I know has written a good idiots guide toi this but I cannot find it on the discssions. Could someone send or link it to me again. Thanks

To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing Netgear wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
