Airport Express - want only to use it for connecting a printer wirelessly

Ugh... have opened up a brand new Canon printer and plugged it into a new Airport Express and hoped that it would somehow talk to my iMac across the room but no luck. Apple Store boy said no problem - click and plug and play... but alas no. Right now, my internet modem is plugged directly into my iMac, so I don't need the Airport Express to assist with anything that has to do with my internet connection, and I wanted Airport Express to solely link my printer to my iMac. A) Hope I am explaining my plight here properly. B) Hope that what I want to do is entirely possible. Am fearful that iMac can only process wired or wireless but not both. Anyway - if anyone can assist - very much appreciated.

Hey, Duane, that's actually incorrect.
You can be connected to the internet via ethernet and the non-internet wireless network created by your Airport Express simultaneously, and thus be able to print and browse at the same time. The iMac will have two IP addresses, one for each connection type, and it will definitely work.
To the OP:
Setup will be as easy as leaving your modem/ethernet setup as is and plugging the printer into the Express, plugging the Express into wall and opening Airport Utility on your Mac. You'll want to "create wireless network" and give it a name and password. Make sure Airport is turned on, join the network, and add a printer in the Print & Fax preference pane. Print a test page. Done.
You could also connect the modem to the Express, and not plug anything into the iMac, and run everything off your wireless network.

  • New AirPort Express, but only 1 device can be connected at a time

I recently switched out a Linksys router for an AirPort Express, and now I am only able to connect 1 of my devices (MacBook, iPad, iPod Touch, Tivo) to the internet at any given time. I'm not sure if this is an AirPort or ISP (Earthlink DSL) issue, but with the Linksys, I was always able to have multiple devices on my home network at once.
With each of my Apple devices, I have to open Safari and obtain a connection by entering my DSL password. Specifically, the Earthlink ASDL Modem page says, "The Internet connection is currently in use by another computer (lists the IP address). Enter your DSL Account logon password to switch the Internet connection to this computer."
After I do this, Earthlink gives me the option of 'Releasing the Connection' so other computers can access the internet without entering the logon password...whether I do or don't, it doesn't change the fact only 1 of my devices can be online at once.
Did I configure my AirPort incorrectly or is there a setting that I need to change to fix this issue? Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions, kaytoem!
This sounds like you may have the AirPort Express set up in "bridge mode", which would only allow one device to connect at time.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connection Sharing setting
This should be set to Share a public IP address
    Update to save any changes
    Does that help?

Some Internet providers that limit access to a single device at a time do so by the device's hardware MAC address. If your ISP is one of those, you may be able to substitute the MAC address of your AirPort Express base station for the computer. I would suggest that you contact them to find out if this is allowable.

can i use my european airport express in israel as a client for streaming music?
    thank you!

Yes. There may be regional differences in the number of available wireless channels but it should work. Its power supply is universal.

  • Can i use my airport express to get wi fi access for my samsung mobile?

can i use my airport express to get wi fi access for my samsung mobile..if yes, how?

If your Samsung mobile phone is Wi-Fi ready, you can use the AirPort Express or any other wireless router or wireless access point to provide a Wi-Fi network for it to connect to.

  • Airport Express not working when used with Broadband Router **HELP!!!**

    Hello.
I have an ethernet network in my house, and I am connected to the network via a Linksys router for Broadband VOIP and internet. I am on a G5 in my home office and want to stream music to my Airport Express for my home stereo in the living room, via the ethernet connection.
The problem is that when using the router in my network, only the Admin Utility sees the base station-- iTunes does not.
If I remove the router from the equation altogether and plug the network ethernet cable directly into the G5, the AX in the other room works just fine and I can get internet on the G5 in the office. The problem is that I need the router to operate my Vonage VOIP phone service and to connect a second computer to the internet as well. The IP address for the router in the home office is "192.168.x.xxx" and when I try moving it to the living room and connecting the AX to it, the Admin Asst doesn't see the AX at all.
When I connect the router to the network in the office, I can use internet on both computers and the VOIP phone service, and the AX Admin Asst. sees the base station from the other room. But again, iTunes does not.
Is there a way to configure the router to see the AX?
    Thanks for your help!

Forgive me if this a little off thread, but I have just managed to get this to work and thought it might help people with similar configuration issues (mix manufacturer wireless networks)
I received an Airport Express (FW v. 6.3) for Christmas this year. I already am using a D-Link DI-524 wireless(G) router (Rev A FW 1.03) for my Comcast cable modem in my house (downstairs). What I wanted to do is to add the Airport Express in my office upstairs to my network (client mode) so that I could print from my HP Deskjet 3740 printer and listen to iTunes on my stereo through Airtunes. I have two iBooks (G3) with regular (802.11b) airport cards in them) running Tiger.
I ran into a couple of snags though. I could see the printer in Rendezvou and I could see the airport express in iTunes. I however could not print to the printer or connect to the speakers. I was able to connect to the speakers very intermittenly and then the audio would be disrupted every few seconds.
After a bit of hacking, what I found is that it seems that WPA PSK security doesn't work between the two. I changed the security to 128 bit WEP (ASCII mode). This means that you need an exactly 13 character pass phrase. This is necessary because Apple (and pretty much only Apple) supports 40 bit WEP (5 chars) and D-Link (and the rest of the Windows wireless universe) supports 64 bit WEP (7 chars), but they both support 128 bit WEP. I assume you could set both up as an open network if you were far enough from your neighbors, but I am in a townhouse complex, so I thought I probably better have some security on the network.
Now I only see one network (the one set up on my D-Link router) and I can print to my printer and stream to my stereo through iTunes (without disruption). Seems to work seemlessly now.
I should also mention that I did about three other things. I moved the LAN subnet on the D-link router to 192.168.1.1 (DHCP client address are now between 1.100 and .1.200) I had heard that this was necessary since both routers tried to use the 192.168.0 subnet, but I think this is only necessary in relay mode. I also statically assigned the IP address for the Airport Express. Finally I set up a firewall rule of Source WAN/LAN IP addresses of 192.168.1.100-200 of any protocol from ports 1-20000 to the same destination address range should be allowed to allow for all LAN traffic to be passed. I am very certain this is unnecessary and possible dangerous for security, but I thought I should mention that I did it.
    Hope this might help someone.

  • Airport Express can only extend network, not create new one. Why?

I am sharing a flat with some friends. The shared broadband router is placed in the living room. To strengthen the signal and make it easier for me to manage, I bought an Airport Express, connected it to the shared router with an ethernet cable and set up a wireless network of my own in my room. It was working fine, until recently we renewed our broadband contract. The router had been replaced by a new one (I don't know why) and the network configration had been changed. Since then I was not able to use my own network. In the Airport Utility display, the light of Airport Express is green, but the light of Internet is yellow, and the status is disconnected. I tried to change various other configuration on the Airport Express, and all in vain. Until I switched the network mode from 'Create a new wireless network' to 'Extend a wireless network', the Internet connection was finally back online. But this merely extends the existing network and not what I want. Why this happens? Why my Airport Express can only extend a network, not create one?

Here is the situation on my Airport Express.
If I choose to extend the existing wireless network, the Airport Utility shows like this:
If I set up a wireless network of my own, what I get in the Airport Utility is this:
See my problems here? The Airport Express does not show anything in amble, but the Internet complains that there is no connection.
This problem did not occur before the broadband was renewed and the rounter was replaced.

  • Can I play tracks from my iPod via Airport Express on only from my laptop?

I can play tracks from my laptop thorugh my Bose Lifestyle  Airport Express.  Is there a way to play tracks from my iPod Touch through my Bose system via Airport Express?   My Airport Express is set up as a client to my Sky Broadband wireless router.

I set up my laptop to my Bose Lifestyle System via Airport Express. It may be different for MAC but I just downloaded the Airport Express software and followed the on-screen set-up procedure, which includes entering your WI-FI key.  I do not have an iPad.  You need to select Airport Express in iTunes as your sound media. This is easily switched by an icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.  You will need to switch this back if you want to revert to using the laptop speakers.

  • Airport express n only connecting in g mode

    Hi,
I have 2 airport express n's that I have just connected to a DLink DIR655 router to stream itunes remotely. I got them recognized by hooking them up by ethernet to the router to configure and then placing them remotely. I am running the router in n/g mode since I also use my iphone on the network. When I check the system it shows the 2 airport expresses are running in g mode. I have tried setting the DLink to N only mode temporarily but then it won't recognize the ae's. The only way to get the ae's recognized is in n/g mode (or n/g/b mode). I thought being n's that the ae's should automatically connect as n's, not g's. Can someone help me determine what I can do to get them to connect as n's?
    Thanks much in advance,
    Joe h

Well even though this got no replies I ended up figuring it out. In case anyone is interested, I had to change the encryption to WPA2 AES instead of using WPA. For some reason with WPA the ae's would only connect in g mode. When I switched to WPA2 they immediately connected in n mode.
Don't know if that is how it is supposed to work, but that is how it does work.

  • I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Airport Express setup only with ethernet

I have been searching the entire internet for hours trying to solve my problem, but to no avail as everyone has a different problem to me.
I got my self an Airport Express, I have a windows 7 PC connected via ethernet cable to my 4 port ADSL2 wireless router.
I have plugged the Airport Express via ethernet to one of the ports on the router.
In my routers webpage, I can see the Airport Express in the DHCP client list with ip address. BUT...
The Airport utility software installed on my PC cannot find the Airport Express to set it up.
    How do I configure it?

If I were to offer a guess you may have DHCP enabled on the Airport Express as well and therefore your PC cannot see the Express.
The simplest way would be to connect the Express directly to your PC RJ45 Port and configure using Airport Utility.

  • Want stream Netflix to blueray via Airport Express wifi. The blueray finds my wifi but the wireless connection failed - said, Ensure DHCP server is enabled on router and restart router. Don't think I have DHCP server. Suggestions anyone?

Want to stream Netflix to blueray player via my existing Airport Express wifi. The player finds my wifi but the wireless connection fails - says, " Ensure DHCP server is enabled on router and restart router." I don't think I have a DHCP server. Suggestions anyone?

I can't speak specifically regarding LG, but the Whole Home feature on Direct TV (record a movie on one DVR and watch it on another TV in another location) just won't work with wireless, and I have a strong fast connection at 300 Mbps. Ethernet works perfectly.
Few audio/video products will accept "n" wireless at 5 GHz. I suspect that your LG accepts a 2.4 GHz signal, which would top out at 130 Mpbs.
If you are trying to stream High Definition video, especially at 1080P, my opinion would be that it is unlikely that you will be able to do so reliably using wireless.
Perhaps another user who has figured out how to do this will post with some input.

UCCX 9.0- My customer wants only ziptone in headset for new call to agent, no ringing on Phone.
Can this be done? I can't seem to find a way to do this natively.

Yes, I looked into that option. They don't want that because some agents have been known to walk away from their desk without going not ready.
    Thanks for the quick response!
