Airport Express - warranty/applecare ?!

hi all,
about a week ago I've purchased an Airport Express and since the purchase day I'm trying to register it under my 2 months old AppleCare, but even if the registration process goes smoothly, I'm receiving no feedback from Apple and when I'm checking the warranty for that specific serial number it only shows 1 year. Is the Airport Express covered by AppleCare together with my Macbook Unibody?
I'm asking this question here as where I am now I cannot contact Apple by phone...
Thanks!

The AppleCare Protection Plan covers an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme Card, Apple RAM, and MacBook Air SuperDrive you own and use with a covered computer. That would mean if you currently have an active AppleCare plan with your MacBook, your AirPort Express Base Station should be covered as well.

  • Airport Express and AppleCare

I purchased an Airport Express base station a little under two years ago, and about 14 months later I got a new MacBook Pro with AppleCare. AppleCare's support states that it covers:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, and Apple RAM modules are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."
Since the base station only supports my laptop and my partner's, both covered by AppleCare, I thought that this would mean that the base station is covered, since there are no same purchase provisions as there are with displays, and the warranty period timeout only applies to the Covered Equipment, which is defined as my laptop.
My local Apple Authorised Reseller have told me that they must be on the same purchase, but I have had many issues with them in the past, their customer service is frankly appalling. I have phoned Apple's support number and they have said that the base station is covered, and on a second call the backtracked.
Is there anywhere I can get a definitive answer? I'm quite unhappy with the level of service I've received so far, especially with the lack of knowledge of people who claim to be trained in this area.
The base station itself is dead, no LED, no network. It's spent all its life on a surge protection board that powers my switch and DSL modem, which are still running fine.

That's what I thought - I have my MacBook Pro with AppleCare, and my Airport Express. I use the Airport Express for two Apple laptops with AppleCare almost exclusively. Apple New Zealand say they won't cover it because they're on separate receipts, even though the wording in my AppleCare policy says nothing of the sort.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Local laws have me covered outside of AppleCare, but since I should be covered I'd like to get results without going to a disputes tribunal.

  • Buying an Airport Express in China Covered By Warranty?

I've owned my macbook for about 8 months now, when i purchased it i also got the applecare 2 year warranty. I know this warranty covers many things that go along with the macbook.
I'm currently on a study abroad summer program here in xiaoshan, china where i stumbled into a "PC MALL" kinda district and a found an "Authorized Apple Reseller Store"
It's kinda small but there sell many things that the Apple store back in California would sell as well, including Macbooks, iPods and all the extras.
Well, I noticed they are selling Airport Express there and I'm positive I can get it for a great price here but was wondering if my AppleCare would cover it too?
Say I have problems with it in the future back in the states, and I want applecare to help me out, they will right? It is after all an apple product. right?
Or will they want to see a receipt and such? I dont think i'd even plan telling Apple that i bought it overseas, since after all, it is an Apple Product.
I'm heavily concerned about this. Thanks :]

Hi, Bill!  Actually, no--the AE is creating its own wireless network with the same SSID and password as the Time Capsule.  I had big problems with bandwidth degredation when I tried to extend the network like that.
But I believe I tracked down the cause of the issue--the powerline adapter was losing its connection with the other powerline adapter for some reason.  Still observing that one, but all the Apple stuff appears to be operating normally.  Thanks for the replay anyway!

  • Apple Care replaced my dead, out-out-of-warranty Airport Express

Today, I became one of the hundreds (thousands??) of Airport Express users whose AE died just a few months out of warranty. I faithfully purchase Apple Care (3-year extended warranty) from Apple for every Mac I buy.
A few years ago, my graphite Airport died, and the Apple Care rep gladly replaced it due to my active Apple Care contract at that time. Today, I thought I would receive the same courtesy, thanks again to my TWO active Apple Care contracts that were in place well before I purchased the AE.
My initial Apple Care rep denied my request for a replacement AE, because, he argued, the AE was not purchased at the same time with a Mac. I explained to him the graphite Airport story above, and he dug his heels in deeper. I insisted that he send me up the food chain to a superviser, and after 4-5 min on the phone, the supervisor came on, apologized for his tech's mis-interpretation of policy, and authorized the replacement on the spot. He told me that his techs would have this clearly explained to them for future Apple Care contract holders who call up with a dead AE.
Extra info...I live near an Apple Store, and asked if I may go there and pick up the replacement. He said the decision would be up to the store management--if they had stock, etc. I said I wanted to take my chances and go up there, so he instantly made me an appointment with the genius bar within the hour. This Apple Care supervisor was a real pro. He made it clear that Apple Care covers an AE even if the AE is not purchased with a Mac. He also told me he would make a special request within my case report to the store for a stock unit. Bam! I walked in and got hooked up! Apple does take care of its customer (who might need to be a bit more persistant than need be at times) after all.
Good luck should you find yourself in the same boat I was in...By the way, I am posting this via my replacement AE on the same day, and I would swear it produces faster internet speed than the fried one!

    Hi, Steve
that's one of the good points of the forum here: having a lot of trouble the past few weeks with my iMac, and now also with a brandnew minimac, I get back full with hope by reading your post here.
no, i'm not sarcastic. I think you tell us that we can get treated correctly if we insist to be treated correctly. and that is a a helpful advice.

  • AirPort Express is dead, but under warranty

My airPort Express Base Station does not work. It does not appear anymore, and is apparantly not sending a signal. I have rest it, and tried to troubleshoot it in every way I can think of. I own others that work fine. It is still under warranty with apple, as the receipt says "warranty effective through Jul. 18, 2008." How do I go about the process of having them replace it or fix it?

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.
Try doing a factory reset per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the symptoms persist - get a warranty replacement. Absolutely your Airport Express will be covered for this sort of problem if it is under warranty.

  • Airport Express and Warranty Conditions

    Hi All
Just wondering if anyone can direct me to the warranty conditions for the Airport Express. Whether it is a domestic or global warranty etc.
Any help would be appreciative as I`m having no luck finding it anywhere!
    Thanks!

    Thanks SugarMedia
But unfortunately this is not true. It is one year warranty but not global. I was proved this wrong in Japan, Apple Store Ginza, as I was refused a replacement regardless of the fact that I had my Tax Invoice as well as it being covered by APP with my laptop. Although they were keen in offering me to buy a new one.
I was told that due to the fact that each country has its own WiFi standards that they must comply by, a foriegn Airport Express couldn`t get replaced even though I could be living in the country for another year and a half. Funny note to mention - I mentioned that if i was to get it fixed and sent back to me, wouldn`t I be going against Japanese standards? The answer I got was from the 'genius' was "Yes you would, but everyone does it". So why can't i get it replaced again?
Hence this is why I`m needing to find the specific documentation to save me sending it back overseas as there is no warranty if the item is damaged or even lost through the post.

  • Airport express appears to be dead

Airport expressed was unplugged from one location where it was working fine for many months. When replugged in no longer get any light on front (amber or green) and will not reboot (hard or soft) - has it died????

Yes, it has died. If it is still within the one year warranty (from date of purchase) then contact AppleCare (or bring it in to your local dealer) and arrange for a replacement.

  • Airport Express fails after 14 days

My Airport Express will quit transmitting packets (both to the internet or my internal network) after 14 days and between 5 and 12 hours. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's been a problem since I've had it as I recall. It's not a big problem for me but, in a business environment this wouldn't fly. Has a solution been found? I don't mean power cycling the Airprot Express but, a REAL solution so it no longer happens.
    -Chris Wathan

    Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear about your Airport Express quitting. My experience echoes
    b Alan's.
My Airport Express has been up continuously since I bought it this Spring. I'd say report the problems as a potential bad sample.
    best of luck,
    ...ben
PS. I will add to be fair, that my Airport Express replaced my
    b original
Airport basestation, the Graphite that I used since it came out (2000?) until this past Spring. Now that one failed completely once with a capacitor problem experienced by others as well, and was replaced under AppleCare with an identical unit. But both my original Graphite basestation and its warranty replacement would, approximately weekly, hang, and would not function again until their AC power was recycled, at which point they would run just fine. Fortunately my Airport Express doesn't share that trait, and just stays up.

  • Airport Express + PC ???

I am overwhelmed by the amount of info about the Airport express, so I am hoping you can help me out. I have read it is compatable with a PC. Great, b/c I have one, but can anyone tell me if there is anything additional I will need to work the express with my PC? iTunes, I know, but anything else I have to "install" or what not.
Also, is it true it will die after 1-2 years? Is this always the case? Does Apple send replacements?
    Thanks for your help!

Hello girl_botanist...Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
"Great, b/c I have one, but can anyone tell me if there is anything additional I will need to work the express with my PC?"
To connect to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) from your PC, the PC will need to be wireless capable. If you intend on accessing the Internet, you will need to sign up for Internet service with an ISP who is providing this service in your area. You will also need a DSL/Cable modem, which most ISPs provide with their Internet service.
"Also, is it true it will die after 1-2 years?"
Yes, some have reported that their AXs malfunctioned within that time period.
    "Is this always the case?"
Absolutely not! Most AXs last far longer than this. Typically, as you would expect, you hear about the number of AXs that fail early, because folks who come to these forums usually do not report positive experiences. I'm not saying that they don't fail, but forums tend to be a bit "biased."
    "Does Apple send replacements?"
If the device is within it's warranty or AppleCare service period, Apple will usually replace them.

  • HT201335 Can i use airplay with the apple tv and airport express without an internet connection? Basically Set it up as a closed network?

I was told I could set a local network with the airport express, apple Tv, and my iPad to stream videos or pictures to a TV for a presentation.
No internet connection is available at the location.
Is that possible? Or do I need to access itunes homeshare with an internet connection to make this work?
I've set it up at home where I have an internet connection and it works fine but I want to move the setup to my church for a class. The data I'm using is stored on my ipad.
I know I can do this wired with the HDMI adapter but would like to do it wireless.
    Thanks for any help!

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • IMac (on Ethernet) Can No Longer Stream to Airport Express (on WiFi)

After years of reliable service, all of a sudden I cannot stream music from iTunes on my iMac, via my Airport Express, to my stereo system.
First, a bit about my configuration:
       * iMac connected via Ethernet to a wireless router (D-Link DIR-655).
       * iMac Airport (WiFi) is turned off.
       * D-Link sets up a wireless network, and Airport Express joins the network.
       * Airport Express does not set up its own network, it's simply a client of the existing D-Link wireless network.
       * iTunes "sees" the Airport Express, and can stream audio via AirPlay.
       * iPad also joins the wireless network, and also can stream to the Airport Express via AirPlay.
       * iMac running 10.6.8, with all software updates applied.
       * Airport Express running latest firmware (7.6.1).
Well, that was a few days ago, when "it just worked". But for some unknown reason iTunes could no longer "see" the Airport Express.
So I took my Airport Express to the Apple Store and they did a Factory Reset, but it did not solve the problem. I figured my rather old Airport Express was failing, so today I bought a new one. The symptoms have changed a bit, but even after spending an hour on the phone with AppleCare, it doesn't work properly.
Now, the only way the iMac can stream to the Airport Express is if the iMac also joins the wireless network. In fact, now with Airport turned OFF on the iMac, the Airport Utility cannot see the Airport Express. But here's another weird thing: when I use the IP address of the Airport Express, the Airport Utility CAN connect with and manage the Airport Express, even with Airport turned OFF on the iMac!
I should also mention, the iPad has no issues whatsoever connecting to the D-Link's wireless network and streaming music to the Airport Express.
This all seems like something might have changed on the D-Link wireless router. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out what setting(s) on the router might allow the iMac - over Ethernet - to stream audio to the Airport Express.
Another thing. When I have Airport turned on on the iMac, it can "see" and stream to the Airport Express, but the music has very frequent drop-outs. Could this be related to the fact that the iMac has two IP addresses (one on Ethernet, one on WiFi)?
My goal is to get things "back to normal", where I can turn off Airport on the iMac, and all LAN and WAN traffic from the iMac goes over Ethernet. I have a few questions (for now :-)
       * Since my iMac has two connections to my LAN using two IP addresses (Ethernet & WiFi), is that likely to cause any issues?
       * When two computers join the same wireless LAN, can they effectively talk directly to one another, or does the wireless router need to be involved every time one computer sends a TCP or UDP packet to the other?
       * Do routers (or the DIR-655 in particular) tend to have any firewalls or policies that control connections on the LAN between Ethernet and WiFi clients?
       * Since AirPlay uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353, would the DIR-655 need any special configuration to "open these ports" so an Ethernet client can connect with a WiFi client?
So, any help would be most appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Jim

I am having a very similar issue.  I use my Airport Express (AX) to stream music from the computers on my network to my stereo via Airplay.  I have AX set up to wirelessly join my existing wireless network, which uses a D-Link DIR-655 router hooked to a Time Warner cable modem.  I can succesfully connect all of my wireless devices via Airplay, through iTunes to my AX, including two laptops and an iPhone.  However, my primary desktop PC, which does not have a wireless card is linked directly via ethernet cable to my D-Link router, and it is not able to see my AX.  Similar to your case, I can see the Airport Express from my PC through my Airport Utility by directly typing in the IP address.  Note that the  AX set-up option to allow Ethernet clients is checked.  I also noticed that my laptops will stop detecting AX if I directly connect them to my D-Link router via Ethernet and turn off their wireless cards.  They will resume detecting AX when I turn their wireless connections back on.  I have tried every conceivable setting of my D-Link router to no avail.

  • Airport Express disconnects wired internet connection when attempting to extend Airport Extreme WiFi network

I just purchased and airport express to extend my wifi network.  My base station is an airport extreme, I have one wired connection and a wifi network.  When I go through the recommended steps to set up the express and "extend the network", the airport extreme will no longer connect to the internet via ethernet.  I have tried various settings and can't seem to resolve the problem.  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  • Airport Express no longer works in "Enterprise Arrangement" Long

This is going to be somewhat long, so bear with me as I will try to be as detailed and complete as possible. I just was hung up on by Apple Technical Support after Michael waited until 6:01pm PDT so I could not call back, so any help would be appreciated.
I have three airport express base-stations that are arranged as follows:
    1. Living Room - connects to my cable modem and iTunes to send music to the stereo.
    2. Kitchen - extends the airport signal so that it covers the back yard and is connected to a USB printer.
    3. Den - extends the airport signal to cover the bedrooms and is connected to iTunes for the den stereo.
The three units are connected via WDS in a very simple setup that took about five minutes to complete via Setup Assistant and some minor alterations in Airport Utility. The entire system functioned perfectly for over eight months until today when the Kitchen unit was no longer communicating to the printer and could not be accessed using Airport Utility. It would only "flash amber" after attempting numerous resets and even factory default resets. So, what to do -- thinking that the Airport unit had given up the ghost (I had one fail some time ago), I called apple support under my AppleCare plan.
The first representative (Chris) was very helpful and worked with me to try to reset the unit. When he could make no progress, I was passed along to a "product specialist," Michael, who tried very dilligently to explain from the beginning that my arrangement was far too complicated for basic support and that I had to buy an enterprise service contract in order to solve my problem. We spoke briefly and I assured him that I would accept whatever help that he could provide, as I felt that the particular base station had some malfunction.
We spent the better part of ninety minutes resetting the problematic (Kitchen)base-station to no avail. Finally he offered the following solution: "if all you want is to use it as a print server, we can set it up on it's own network." I said that that was not what I wanted, but thought we could try it as a possible workaround solution. After a few minutes of tinkering he had me set up a new network that only served as a print server. No longer did I get the range-expansion of my previous arrangement, and I have to switch the entire network from the airport menu in order to print. I can no longer print and surf the net or print and listen to music. He felt that this was an acceptable solution and tried to tell me that he and I "agreed to disagree" about this being a solution.
I explained to Michael that this was very "un-apple-like" in it's application and that there had to be something wrong with the base-station as it continues to "flash amber" rather than going to solid green. He reiterated his "agree to disagree" statement and said that my setup was too complicated for basic support. I offered to turn off the Den base-station to bring about an "acceptable level of support complexity." To this, Michael became very testy and proceeded to spend a minute or so explaining why I could not be helped and then hung up on me.
After being disconnected at 6:01pm PDT I then unplugged the Den base-station and simplified the system to what apple will support and still the problem persists: the Kitchen base-station will not join an existing network and run the USB printer at the same time. It can do one or the other, but when setup to do both, it consistently "flashes amber" and is inaccessible to Airport Utility - attempts to connect to the Kitchen base station through Airport Utility are met with the Spinning Beach Ball of Death and eventually with an error message : Airport Utility is unable to recognize the network.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions, but I'm afraid that I have an Airport Express paperweight.
I'll try again with Apple in the morning, also, but would like to solve this tonight if possible.
    Thanks in advance,
    Field
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Airport Express 6.03

I called AppleCare this morning and Sean helped me out in a huge way. In all of my attempts, I had not done a factory-default reset on the main base station and apparently some sort of endless loop had occurred between those two stations. Sean was very helpful and patient with me, but now the system is working as promised. Moral of this story is if a factory default rest doesn't help on the "problem" base station, try resetting all of the units.

  • Can't get Airport Express A1088 to work with A1264

    Hi,
My modem and office are at opposite ends of my home, so I've been using 2 x Airport Express base stations (both A1088) to connect to the internet. One is plugged into the modem via an Ethernet cable, the other is set up in a hallway to extend the range (I just lose the signal if I only use one AX). On Sunday, one A1088 "died" so I bought an A1264 to replace it. I've tried to set them up as a network (following WDS instructions on this site, etc), but no joy. Airport Utilities just won't "see" them. Any tips for set-up or ideas where I might be going wrong? Is there a step-by-step guide anyone can direct me to? Or would I be better off just buying a second A1264?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Consider it purged, John!
I got a survey which I filled in as constructively as possible (largely because I didn't want to get the second guy any grief because I feel he was as helpful as he was able to be.)
I finally sorted out the issue, with one final hiccup ("Join a network" was so branded on my brain from my attempts at THAT ACRONYM that I forgot I needed to use "Extend a network" instead – d'oh!)
Crazy as it sounds, I think one problem is with terminology. If I'd said "802.11n" and/or "802.11b/g" instead of A1264 and A1088, the Applecare guys may have got what I was on about a bit quicker, but surely the customer is going to go by the name on the label (ones that also seem to be used everywhere from this forum to eBay!), so surely it's up to Apple to make certain their staff are aware of model numbers, etc?
I agree with what you're saying about customer service. It's probably not an easy job - I don't think I was rude at any point (at least I hope not), though I may have sounded whiny and stressed, which would have been nothing personal, just frustration with the situation. But there are ways for helpline staff to say, "OK, let's go through this one step at a time…" without getting uppity!
