Airport Express will not update

My Airport Express is 7.4.1 and over the last two years where it asked me to update to 7.6.1, it never works. Why?

I have had a similar problem with one of my AEX's.
The hard reset & direct ethernet connection would not allow a reset or a firmware update.
I have just discovered that if one hovers over the device at hand when it appears in the Airport Utility list (column on the left) & right-click (or control-click), a virtual menu appears that includes "Restore to Default Settings," which was successful. The device was ethernet-connected for the reset & once it was restored I was able to update the firmware to 7.4.2.
It now is back in working order wirelessly.
Hope this may be of help to others!

  • Airport express will not update firmware.

The unit works fine, it's about one month old. Every time I open up the airport utility it says that 'This Airport Express should be updated to the latest firmware. Current version: 7.4.1 Available version 7.4.2" I've run this update at least four times and every time it completes 'successfully.' Upon returning to the airport utility mainpage, it just says the same thing again. It's just stuck at 7.4.1.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
I've been able to fix this issue in the past by doing a factory default reset on the AirPort Express and then updating the firmware before reconfiguring the device.
To do this, power down the Express
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the device back into power
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
You can also return the device to factory defaults when it is selected and you have AirPort Utility already open. From the Base Station menu at the very top of your screen up by the Apple icon, select Restore Default Settings
It might be a good idea to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from you computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "discover" the device once you have done the reset.

  • My Airport Express will not update from 7.4.1 to 7.6.1.

No matter how many times I press the button, the update never seems to occur. Anyone have any ideas?

    Power-Cycle it, including your device.
If it still doesn't work... factory re-set and start from there.

  • Need Help...my wireless airport express will not work with my update of snow leopard

after installing snow leopard on my macbook pro my airport express will not work...or will connect only for a minute at a time.

If you mean by "airport express" the square airport router you plug in and has a usb port then run the Airport Utility located in your Utilities folder to set it up again. If AU doesn't see it you may need to do a re-set of the AE.

  • AirPort Express will not extend Wireless Network

Hello.  My airport express will not extend my wireless network.  It was green for about the first 4 hours and then I've had a flashing yellow light since that time.  I've reset it a bunch of times and even have the AE in the same room as my AP Extreme.  I complete the setup and then it continues to flash yellow.  Can ayone give me a hand?

In the cases where the AirPort base stations would be interconnected by Ethernet you want to configure then for a roaming network, NOT an extended network. Apple uses the term "extended" when the base stations use wireless connection. Regardless of naming convention the end results is pretty much the same.
The link I provided should provide you with the necessary steps to set this type of network up.
If you need additional help, please start a new post as the solution for you will be different than the OPs. Thx!

  • Airport Express will not talk to my router

I have 2 airport express stations that are 6.3 and they have always been able to connect to my qwest wireless router no prob. I've recently updated to Leopard and was surprised to see the new airport utility instead of the airport admin and airport setup tools. I like the new utility and interface as it seems less confusing than the old but now I'm having issues.
    1. I can get the new utility to recognize my airport express ONLY when I do a hard reset to the airport express.
    2. As I've done many times in the past, I go through the following setup protocol to join my current wireless network. I simply want to join my current network so I can talk to my stereo and printer wirelessly.
    3. When I finish the setup and hit update, the airport utility updates the express successfully and then attempts to restart the express in order to join my network. This is where the problem lies.
*Here's the error message I get:*
AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.
The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.
Now, I've tried repeating this process 10 times with both airport express stations and the same result happens? Remember, the only way for the utility to find the express is to hard reset the express. What gives? I bought both of these express stations over a year ago and they've been working fine til now. Because they are older and updated to 6.3, I shouldn't update them to the 802.11n7.3.1 update or should I? Is there something different about this new airport utility in Leopard that is causing the problem?
Like I said, I've done this exact same thing many times and its pretty straight forward but I'm stumped.
    Anyone? Thanks in advance

I've got the solution! It took me some fair hours, though...
It seems the Airport Express can not handle the WEP-encryption properly, nor the 64 or the 128 bit versions. Here's how to work around it:
    1) change your routers encryption to WPA2 with passkey (WPA-2-PSK). You may use the 10-digit code supplied with most routers or any of your own choice.
    2) Change all wireless cards in your network to WPA2-PSK. It can take some time to figure it all out, but in the end you'll fix it. I had to download a new driver for my D-Link card DWL-G650 for instance.
    3) Do the usual config thing with the Airport Express. Choose to connect to an existing network, apply the 10-digit passkey (be sure to choose the WPA2-PSK-option in the drop down-menu).
    4) Off you go! Itunes will find the remote speakers, green lights all over and everybody turns happy...

  • Airport Express Will Not Reset or Join WDS Network

I have an Airport Extreme which is a WDS main. The Express will not join the network. I reset the Extreme, set up the network again, and did a hard reset of the Express. Airport Utility will not see the Express either from my iMac or MB Pro regardless of whether I connect directly through Ethernet, or wirelessly. The Express flashes amber. I've read the proposed solutions given to others with the same problems, but nothing works for me.
I know I'm doing something incorrectly, but can't figure out what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    A couple of suggestions:
    1. do a factory default reset of the Airport Express. Follow the instructions to the letter, which means don't let go of the reset button until you see the four green flashes in a row. This can take a bit longer than Apple's article suggests - up to 10-15 seconds.
    2. when setting up the WDS (and I suggest you do this all wirelessly) make sure the Mac, the Airport Extreme, and the Airport Express are all in the same room. I suggest you use the iMac - MacBook Pros seem to have their own share of wireless network problems.

  • After Leopard install, all three Airport Expresses will not work...

I have three Airport Express' that worked completely fine before I installed Leopard. After the installation, the Airport Utility will not even detect them. No matter how many times I try to reset them, unplug them, or yell at them, they will not be recognized by the Airport Utility. Currently, all three units are completely useless and just flashing amber. I have tried to look through the topics to see if anyone else has the same issue but, I could not find one that seem to be a duplicate of this problem.
    Please help.
    -F.

My guess - are you trying to connect to them wirelessly?
If so, the only solution I found was to hook them up with an ethernet cable to the Mac.
Airport then finds them OK and you can upgrade the firmware / software to latest versions.
    Hope that helps

  • Airport utility will not update

having problems with my Airport Express not staying conected, thought i would down load and install the updated Airpot Utility 5.6.1
dowloaded and attemted to install, will not install unless i have the most up to date operating soft-wear. downloaded and
in stalled the update Mac OS X v10.7.4 (took 24 hours)
airport utiliti still will not install, saying "AIRPORT UTILITY CAN'T BE INSTALLED ON THIS DISK, THE VERSION OF MAC OS X ON THIS VALUME NOT SUPPORTED"
    please help

Is there a chance that you missed the info about AirPort Utiltiy 5.6.1 before you tried to install it?
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 can only be used with the Snow Leopard or Leopard operating systems....10.5.7 to 10.6.8.
You have Lion 10.7.4, so you will need to download and install the correct application for your Lion operating system:
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

  • Airport Express will not allow any downloads over the network, why is this and what can I do to fix it?

I own an Apple Airport Express station. I am attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the airport is hooked into the network via ethernet cord. While the first few months of operation have gone smoothly for this router, over the last few weeks any and all downloads have failed to complete over the airport. I moved outside and used the official University's wifi and the downloads worked, meaning it's not a UNC network problem (to my knowledge). All file types affected include song downloads through iTunes, app downloads on my iPhone, software downloads like Google Chrome, Finale, Microsoft Word updates, etc. I have tried this on both my Lenovo with Windows 7 and my Macbook Pro to troubleshoot hardware problems and it doesn't work on either of them. I have restored the router to factory settings twice now and still it does not work. Sorry for the length of this, just wanted to pass along as much info as I could.

The fact that you can access all downloads while the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is not directly attached to the University's network indicates that the University's IT department may not allow downstream routers connected to their network without first registering it with them. This is often the case, and it is not uncommon that most universities do not allow you to do so in the first place. I would suggest that you start by contacting your IT department to see if this is allowed, and if so, they should be able to assist you with the proper configuration of your AX.

  • Airport express will not reset

I thought Airport Expess was acting wacky, so I poked the reset button with a pencil.  Now I can't get Airport Express to reset.  When I open Airport Utility 6.2, I get the message:
This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
So, I download 5.6, but when I try to install, I get the error message:
"Airport Utility cannot be installed on this disk.  The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
Just for fun, I try to trash Airport Utility 6.2, but I get the error message:
"Airport Utility.app can't be modified or deleted because because it's requried by Mac OS X."
What am I supposed to do?
    Thanks,

I figured out the solution.  It's a known issue.  The answer is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4657691?start=0&tstart=0
Unfortunately, the instructions in the link are poorly written.  Further, I don't quite remember what I did to compensate for the poorly written instructions.  It had something to do with the doodad putting something onto my desktop.  You run the doodad according to instructions, and it seems as if it does nothing, but it actually puts something onto your desktop.
Also, I followed both links in the link, but I have no idea which link placed the thing onto my desktop.  Trust me it will work, but I'm sorry I can't provide specific instructions!

  • Airport Express will not scan iMac.

    Hello,
I have 3 devices trying to connect to an AirPort Express. An iMac, MacBook Air and an iPod Touch.
However the iMac will not even scan or recognize the AirPort Express. The other 2 devices are okay.
Can anyone provide any solution, please?
    Thank you.

    Problem now sorted.
This probelm was caused by the Fiewall on the iMac. I use Macafee anit-virus with firewall. The firewall needed re-setting. However, I am now irritated by consistent drop out in the new 2nd Gen Airport Express! Anyone passing this query that can help?

  • Airport express will not stay connected

I have a new Airport Express (802.11n) and it will not stay connected to my MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

I have returned the Express and reinstalled my Extreme. I found a "tip" page that suggested to put a sheet of aluminum foil behind the Express to concetrate the signal inside the house. This crude idea has not solved the problem. My MacPro is a 2 GHz Intel Core i7. Any further suggestions?

  • New Airport Express will not connect to internet

I am attempting to upgrade from an old Airport Base Station (the gum drop/flying saucer/mushroom model) to the new and improved mini tower model. I plugged the ethernet cable from the comcast cable modem in and nothing worked - no wireless, no internet, no nothing but flashing amber light. I was able to configure a new wireless network, and it shows up on MBPro running Maverick and iPad using Airport Utility as a functioning wireless network (with the green light on the AE), but it will not connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

The only step that appears to be missing is to reset your cable or DSL modem. Unplug it and let it rest a moment or two, then power it back up again: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2460
You've done everything right, but still can't connect to the Internet. Why?
It is likely that the modem locked onto your iMac, and it will ignore anything else you plug into it until the modem has been reset. If you were to plug the iMac back into the modem, it would still connect to the Internet.
Fortunately, resetting a broadband modem is usually very easy -- just unplug its power supply, wait a moment, and plug it back in. After its indicator lights have gone through their startup routine, you should do the same to the AirPort base station.
Odds are that you can connect to the Internet now.

  • Airport Express 'names' not updating in Itunes 'speakers'

    Love the iphone remote app
purchased a few airport expresses -
    Named them - Renamed them
BUT itunes is NOT picking up the renames -
any clues on how I 'refresh' the speaker list names in itunes?

It has a separate name for the AirPort itself and the "iTunes Speaker Name." Use the AirPort Utility and click "Manual Setup" for the AirPort Express, then click the Music icon in the toolbar at the top. From there you can change the name it shows in iTunes.
