Airport express with comcast
I just purchased the AirPort Express 802.11n. I am using Vista on my machine and my ISP is comcast. I connected the AE using an ethernet cable and I can access the internet but every time i try to set up a wireless network, for some reason it gives me an error saying "An error occured while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -4." I even tried to reset the AE and reinstall Airport Utility but keep getting the same error. Does anyone have a solution for this issue?
Sorry. I think I understand the first part, but not the second. I put 10.0.1.2, which was listed as the IP address of the Airport, into the (optional) DNS entry of the PowerBook. That didn't seem to have any effect. I'm not sure where to get the relevant DNS entries from my ISP -- the DNS area under Ethernet was blank until I put in 10.0.1.2; there is an IP listed, but I thought that the use of DHCP would mean that it would change. It's taking me a long time to try things because I have to disable the direct ethernet connection, fiddle with the Airport until I get the network set up, try things, then fiddle with reconnecting. There's a fair amount of unplugging and restarting that seems to be necessary every time. Thanks for your help.

Using Airport Express with Comcast Digital Broadband/Telepony Modem
I recently converted from Comcast's broadband modem to their combined modem for digital phone and internet. I can't connect both my G5 and the airport express to the modem simultaneously. Airport express set-up configuration shows a broadband modem with 2 ethernet ports. My modem only has 1. The modem is Touchstone Telephony modem by Arris. Has anyone made this type of connection work with this modem?
Here is my set-up:
iMac G5 connected via ethernet to telephony/broadband modem (basement)
Airport Express (basement)
iBook G4 (1st floor)
I plan to purchase an airport express base and move the airport express to the 1st floor so I can use the iBook on the 3rd floor. Before I spend the money, I want to make sure this will work.

It seems you will need a Router in order to get all your computers and the Airport Express to connect to the internet.

Can I use Airport Express with Comcast router and Apple TV?
I want to connect my iPod Touch (version 8.1.2) to a home stereo wirelessly. I am considering getting an AE Base Station. I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.9.5 connected wirelessly using a Comcast router. I also have an Apple TV, which I have not yet connected to my TV. Here are some questions.
Are there any problems with doing this. In particular, can I continue to use the Comcast router?
Also, I have seen some comments saying that the cable modem slowed down when AE was added. Is that true? Thanks,

My understanding is that the iPod Touch has a built-in airplay transmitter.
If so, connecting the AE Base Station to my stereo would allow sending music from my iPod to my stereo.

Can no longer connect to Airport Express with upgrade to iTunes 10.1
Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.1 I can no longer connect to my Airport Express (unknown error-15000). Another computer on my betwork running an older version of iTunes still works on the Airport Express.
Any ideas? I have tried to uninstall and reinstall airport express with no success.Rather than disabling the firewall, try making sure you've got exceptions in it for BonJour. Although the following document is about a different error message, the instructions in there are worth trying. (At step 7, make sure there's an exception for BonJour as well.)

Trying to set up Airport Express with Ethernet Powerline adapters

Having some problems trying to set up my Airport Express with Netgear ethernet powerline adapters.
I want to set up as follows:
Wireless Belkin router --- powerline <---> powerline --- airport express --- home stereo system
The problem I have is that I can connect the airport x in client mode & wirelessly play music using airtunes (until the sound breaks up) but itunes does not find the airport x when connected via the powerlines.
I have airport admin utility configured as follows:
Airport tab:
Wireless mode: create a wireless network
Wireless network name: same as my wireless router SSID
Allow this network to be extended: unticked
radio mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel: automatic
Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 personal (as per my router)
Wireless Password: as per my router
Verify Password: as per my router
Internet tab:
Connect using: ethernet
Connection sharing: off (bridge mode)
Music tab:
Enable Air Tunes ticket
no password set
In iTunes, I have home sharing on & share entire library selected with no password set.
Using OS 10.6.5 & Airport Express 7.5.2
I can ping the IP address of the airport express when connected via the powerlines but cannot select the speakers in iTunes (they are greyed out).
Any assistance would be appreciated....

As suggested, I connected up the Airport X to the Belkin and plugged in a pair of headphones. It didn't work, still could not select the Airport X as speakers.
Dug out my old Netgear DG834G and connected that up in place of the Belkin - it worked. Next connected in the Netgear powerlines and it still worked.
So, the problem is the relatively new Belkin F7D4401 router.
Looks like I will have to find an alternative 802.11n...

Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.
Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
What could the problem be?99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge. -
Airport Express with printer & hard drive with Time Machine
I have a MacBook that I'd like to backup its data. Concerned about the following (in level of concern from highest to lowest): theft, crash, fire.
I currently have an Airport Express with a Brother printer attached to it that my PC and MacBook print to.
I am really in a dilemma as to what to do. I was looking into Carbonite to get an offsite backup location of my data. (I figured offsite would cover all concerns of losing data due to theft, fire, or just a crash) However, Carbonite does not hold onto data you delete (ie, my photos and videos will fill up my hard drive eventually and I'd like to just archive them in one central spot when I am done accessing them on a regular basis-- ie delete them off my MacBook hard drive). That is like $55/year to do Carbonite... but, the only thing that will help me with over a hard drive in my house is a fire (and theft if a burglar were to find where my backup drive was in the house).-- Of course, I'd probably want a different location for my hard drive for that reason -- so, I'd have to buy another airport or just a time machine that has the wifi built in.
I've read lots of issues with the Western Digital trying to download programs onto your computer... I have one for my PC that I backed up photos manually and it did try to install programs when I attached it to my PC... not so much my Mac when I took some photos off it. I looked into getting another portable hard drive at Costco for my Mac, but realized that it would require reformatting to use on my Mac (as it was built for a PC).... something I wasn't sure if I was computer-savvy enough to do or if I did do it, would I end up with issues later on?
Anyhow... in the end, what do you all do to backup your data, especially photos and videos? Do you have smaller hard drives that you back up to and then when full move them to an offsite location? Can you have more than one "hard drive" backing up..... I was thinking it would be nice to have one larger hard drive that would potentially hold all my photos and videos so I can access anytime, but then have smaller drives of the same data that I can take to a safe deposit box and use as my super secure backup (no fire, no theft, no crash).
btw, When doing time machine, does it keep all the metadata with each photo?
Burning CD's is time consuming.... and, I have heard there are different qualities of disks out there... archival v. not... how long do the archival last v. the non-archival... or is that more of an issue for future generations not being able to access our photos?You need to remember that the Time Capsule is both a wireless router and a hard drive all in one enclosure. If you don't need a wireless router, around $150 of the $300 for a Time Capsule is going to be in the router portion of the device.
The nice thing about the Time Capsule is that it is a network drive. All Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard will be able to back up automatically to a single device. The first generation of Time Capsules about two years ago had some power supply problems that affected some users. Apple announced a program for these users to replace their Time Capsules.
So, it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a new, dual band wireless router and want to backup your Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard automatically using ethernet or wireless, the Time Capsule is a logical choice.
If you don't need a new router, then you'll need to look at a separate hard drive that will be attached directly to the computer using the USB or FireWire port. If you have two Macs, you'll have to get two hard drives if you want to do Time Machine backups correctly.
Most hard drives can be reformatted to work with Mac if you don't mind a few extra steps and Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) does not look too complicated for you.

I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...

Can I use Airport Express with iPhone in my hotel room?
Is there a way to set up an Airport Express in my hotel room when I travel, so that the provided High Speed internet cable in the room can be plugged into my Airport Express, giving me a wireless internet connection for the iPhone? I use Airport Express often this way with my MacBook, so I don't have to be tethered to the cable.
I did this about a month ago when I was in England. I just had the Airport Express with me, and had not done any configurations. I plugged it in and had the iPhone find it. It worked in some hotels, and didn't at others. When it worked it was great. I assume with some of the hotels where it didn't work, that I needed to configure it but since I didn't have my laptop I didn't have any way to configure it. Is there any kind of "universal" or "automatic" configuration you can set it up with?

Airport Express with D-Link router?
I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

Not to mention the Apple "Genius" told him that it should work. However, they also told him that it came with an ethernet, USB and the stereo patch cables...

DaveI had to spend some time ( off and on 1 hour) with network settings, but AX with AirTunes works great! The advice in this discussion helpped more than the book or Apple's support site.

today i just got my new airport express with draft n. but my router can't load the config anymore after i uploading my setting ( change to N with 5 GB ). i've tried all of methods that the manual included. I think i need to exchange the new one. i just bought it yesterday.
i wanna know that would apple store give me refurbished product to me ????today i got a replacement of AE with 802.11n. the same problem come up. Cant load the configuration. how on earth can i change the setting of my AE? this is my second times, my serial number is 6F8111XXXXX. Please apple fix it.

Hi, can anyone help. I've just updated my network with a new hub and now i cant find my 1st gen Airport express with the curreent Aiport utilities.
From your description, it sounds like the AirPort Express was configured to connect to your "old" router or hub...and, to do that, the Express remembered the specific ID of that device as part of the connection credentials.
The Express is likely still looking for the "old" device for which it still has the settings to connect.
Since you changed to a new hub or router, the Express has no idea how to connect to this new device.
If this is the case......then the solution will be to reset the Express back to factory default settings....and then configure it again to connect to your "new" hub.
