Airport Express with Older Mac G5

Hi -
This is my configuration:
Brand New Mac Mini 2012
AirPort Extreme (6 months)
Brand New Comcast/Xfinity gateway (not sure what brand they private labeled)
The good news - everything works great. (I have a double NAT error message but Comcast does not allow you to put theirs in bridge mode and I want a guest network so I just ignored the error).
I have a new roommate moving in with two comptuers, an older computer Power Mac G5 Dual Core and a 2011 Mac Mini. On the G5, there does not appear to have any way to connect to the wireless signal. I did some research online and I know that there is an option to install a card for it. I also looked at USB receivers.
My question is this: I just bought an AirPort Express because I wanted to extend my wireless network to them when they move in (it's a big, older building so I wanted to make sure that they had a good signal). Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network? And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
Will that work?
Thanks for any help.
Cindy

Can I configure the AirPort Express and then move it to the G5 and connect it with an ethernet cable, giving that machine access to the network?
Yes. The Ethernet port is enabled when the AirPort Express is configured to "exend" a wireless network.
And the AirPort Express will still just send a good wireless signal out for his other Mac Mini?
Yes.
Both answers above assume that the AirPort Express will be located where it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.

How can I use a new airport express on an older MAC?  I am not able to install the new airport utility software because the MAC software is too old.  Can I install the airport software on my newer PC.  Will the older MAC be able to fist it and use it with AirPlay?

You can run Airport Express on v10.4 or later.

I use mine with two older laptops, one running Tiger, one running Leopard, as well as newer Macs running Snow Leopard.
Try installing the software from the CD. If there's a problem, you should see a dialog box.

  • Airport express with older airport

I just received a new airport express and connected it to my stereo. But after trying a number of things, I still get a flashing amber light. I'm trying to use it as a client with a Snow airport.
Is that possible? Or does it require an Airport Extreme base station to function as a client.

The definitive guide to setting up a network of original Airport
with Airport Express so you can surf and play music concurrently.
You cannot do much with an original Airport, Graphite or Snow.
However at least Airport Extreme and Airport Express are backward compatable.
In addition the Airport Configuration Assistant nas changed over time such that as at Tiger
Airport Assistant will work for models of Airport.
However, Panther requires Airport Assistant Graphite/Snow.
Assuming you already have an Airport(A) network going,
and you want to add the Airport Extreme(AE).
Note all details of your existing network, name, WEP password and encryption level
    etc.
    1) Disconnect your Graphite/Snow base station
    2) Disable any Firewall connections for now.
(Let's just make sure it works first)
    3) Turn A off on the iMac
    4) Turn A on on the iMac
    5) Connect all cables ithat you will use to AE.
    6) Plug in.
    7) To be sure to be sure, hit the reset button with a pin for 5 seconds.
The light will then flash to green and the AE will re-initialise to factory settings.
    (Usefull when everything gets screwed!)
    8) Turn on A at iMac
    9) Invoke Airport Admin at iMac
If you have done all correctly then AE will magically appear in the picklist.
If not, then, choose the A icon and connect to ip address 10.0.1.1 with a password
    of "public".
    10) Configure the AE to "join an existing network" as a client.
Set the password, select the speakers for music, set the encryption to only 40 bits WEP
as that is all A can do.
    11) Disconnect iMac from network.
    12) Power down the AE.
    13) Star up the Graphite/Snow A. and connect the iMac A.
    14) Power on the AE.
    16) Use Airport Config Assistant to setup the AE.
You can then check all settings with Airport Config.
    17) iTunes will now pick up the speakers just dandy.
    18) When you put back the Firewall, then ensure
for the interface in question, usually en1, that you allow
DHCP via ports 67-68, Airport Config via port 5009,
and data packets of UDP via port 5353.
    19) If you like having a physical cable connection to your PC as I do
then, just make sure that when you boot the PC, that airport
does not start up on boot, or login.
ie you want your internet to be on interface en0.
Then later start up airport on interface en1.

    Hello!
I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...
Best regards, and once again thank you!

  • Airport express with Snow and wired Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I am trying to help my parents set up airport express.
They have a Mac Mini with no wireless card connected by ethernet to a Snow base station. That is fine, and computer sees the base station in Airport Admin. However, when I try to go to Airport Setup Assistant to set up the Airport Express, I get a message saying that the computer doesn't have a wireless card (which I know) and doesn't allow me to continue.
Is there a known thing where you can't use Airport Express with a Snow base station without a wireless card? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Nevermind, I guess I answered my own question.

You need to install an older version of AirPort Utility on your Mac. Here is a suggestion:

  • Can no longer connect to Airport Express with upgrade to iTunes 10.1

Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.1 I can no longer connect to my Airport Express (unknown error-15000). Another computer on my betwork running an older version of iTunes still works on the Airport Express.
Any ideas? I have tried to uninstall and reinstall airport express with no success.

Rather than disabling the firewall, try making sure you've got exceptions in it for BonJour. Although the following document is about a different error message, the instructions in there are worth trying. (At step 7, make sure there's an exception for BonJour as well.)

  • Airport Express with printer & hard drive with Time Machine

I have a MacBook that I'd like to backup its data. Concerned about the following (in level of concern from highest to lowest): theft, crash, fire.
I currently have an Airport Express with a Brother printer attached to it that my PC and MacBook print to.
I am really in a dilemma as to what to do. I was looking into Carbonite to get an offsite backup location of my data. (I figured offsite would cover all concerns of losing data due to theft, fire, or just a crash) However, Carbonite does not hold onto data you delete (ie, my photos and videos will fill up my hard drive eventually and I'd like to just archive them in one central spot when I am done accessing them on a regular basis-- ie delete them off my MacBook hard drive). That is like $55/year to do Carbonite... but, the only thing that will help me with over a hard drive in my house is a fire (and theft if a burglar were to find where my backup drive was in the house).-- Of course, I'd probably want a different location for my hard drive for that reason -- so, I'd have to buy another airport or just a time machine that has the wifi built in.
I've read lots of issues with the Western Digital trying to download programs onto your computer... I have one for my PC that I backed up photos manually and it did try to install programs when I attached it to my PC... not so much my Mac when I took some photos off it. I looked into getting another portable hard drive at Costco for my Mac, but realized that it would require reformatting to use on my Mac (as it was built for a PC).... something I wasn't sure if I was computer-savvy enough to do or if I did do it, would I end up with issues later on?
Anyhow... in the end, what do you all do to backup your data, especially photos and videos? Do you have smaller hard drives that you back up to and then when full move them to an offsite location? Can you have more than one "hard drive" backing up..... I was thinking it would be nice to have one larger hard drive that would potentially hold all my photos and videos so I can access anytime, but then have smaller drives of the same data that I can take to a safe deposit box and use as my super secure backup (no fire, no theft, no crash).
btw, When doing time machine, does it keep all the metadata with each photo?
Burning CD's is time consuming.... and, I have heard there are different qualities of disks out there... archival v. not... how long do the archival last v. the non-archival... or is that more of an issue for future generations not being able to access our photos?

You need to remember that the Time Capsule is both a wireless router and a hard drive all in one enclosure. If you don't need a wireless router, around $150 of the $300 for a Time Capsule is going to be in the router portion of the device.
The nice thing about the Time Capsule is that it is a network drive. All Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard will be able to back up automatically to a single device. The first generation of Time Capsules about two years ago had some power supply problems that affected some users. Apple announced a program for these users to replace their Time Capsules.
So, it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a new, dual band wireless router and want to backup your Macs running Leopard or Snow Leopard automatically using ethernet or wireless, the Time Capsule is a logical choice.
If you don't need a new router, then you'll need to look at a separate hard drive that will be attached directly to the computer using the USB or FireWire port. If you have two Macs, you'll have to get two hard drives if you want to do Time Machine backups correctly.
Most hard drives can be reformatted to work with Mac if you don't mind a few extra steps and Disk Utility (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) does not look too complicated for you.

  • AIRPORT EXRESS with airtunes - MAC MINI RECEPTION

    HI MAC BOFFS,
I have just managed to configure a an airport express with airtunes, and managed to get it on the network, but music keeps dropping from the remote speakers. When i get sound it is excellent quality but only for a few seconds.
I have noticed that my reception bar on the top rights does fluctuate and at best is half (and has always) but for internet purposes it never bothered me.
The appartment is stud walls and i have put the router on ch 1 if this helps.:(
Is there anything i should do?
    thank you.
    i sot

    1) The Mac Mini doesn't have great wireless reception. Try experimenting with the Mac mini in the same room to make sure that it is indeed the reception causing your headache. If it is, there are some Mac Mini wireless reception hacks on the 'net.
    2) Are you in an apartment? It is possible that there are many wireless networks around from your neighbors and if they are unencrypted your Mac / AE may be hopping between different networks.

  • Airport express with xplornet,

    Hi from Canada!
Has anyone any experience with connecting a Airport Express with the Xplornet 4G Satalite ISP Service we use here in rural Canada.
Definitly some issues with the DNS.
    any help would be appreciated.

I had to spend some time ( off and on 1 hour) with network settings, but AX with AirTunes works great! The advice in this discussion helpped more than the book or Apple's support site.

  • Can I use Airport Express with a USB Hard disk as a NAS solution?

What have people tried for NAS solutions that work really well wirelessly? Can I use my Airport Express with its USB port to attach a hard disk? Or do I need an Airport Extreme base station? Or some other solution?

The price of the Time Capsule includes the NAS backup system plus a hardware router for your network.
Macs do not support USB 3.0 and most likely won't because Apple's weight is behind Thunderbolt which is considerably faster and more versatile than USB.

  • Airport Express with Time machine vs. Time Capsule?

I'm looking at replacing my backup system. I like the idea of Time Capsule with Time Machine, but I'd like to know if Airport Express with an External drive really works as reported with the March '08 firmware update. I can't find a single place where Apple confirms this.
Also, I look at time capsule and think it's cool, but with $179 (AEBS) + ~$200 (USB 1TB drive) = $379
and 1TB TC running $499, why would I buy TC? The AEBS system gives me the ability to easily swap the drive if it fails and I could buy a drive with a 3-5 year warranty vs. the 1 year on a Time Capsule?
    Comments?

I assume that this is a new AirPort Express and you have not tried to configure it previously.
Locate the AirPort Express in the general area where you would like to have more wireless signal coverage.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the back of the AirPort Express
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few minutes. The amber light will be blinking slowly at this point.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically on your Mac, take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything for you. When you see the indication of Setup Complete, click Done.
    You should be all set.

  • Is it possible to extend the range of one airport express with a second airport express?

    Hi,
We have a Time Warner router and have it hardwired to an Airport Express. Is it possible to extend the range of that one airport express with a second airport express?

... The new AirPort Express that I have is an 802.11n version, but the second one is an older model and I don't know which version it might be. Also, the system recently updated so I'm using the AirPort Utility 6.1.
If you are using Mountain Lion, AirPort Utility 6.1 is the version installed by default. It will not be able to administer "older" AirPort base stations.
For them, use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It can administer your older Express as well as current production base stations.
AU 5.6 is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

  • Airport Express with Airtunes help!

I'm new to the wireless world so my question is why would I get the blinking yellow light on my Airport Express with Airtunes even when I'm within 5 feet of my G4 that has a airport card installed (802.11B). I also tried putting it in the living room which is one floor down and got the same thing.
I updated the firmware for the Airport Express with Airtunes but have not updated the airport card in the G4 because I'm unsure at the apple download site which software to download.
System profiler reports the airport card is 9.52 firmware version.
So is this what I update to: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120097
The music is only cutting out from time to time but I would still like to see a green light on the Airport Express, its odd that it blinks yellow stating that I have a weak connection.
I'm not sure updating the firmware will help the weak signal, I used the airport utility to setup the Airtunes, but maybe there is a different way to configure the network to make it stronger, like I said I'm totally new to this stuff.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The blinking light doesn't indicate a weak wireless signal, it indicates that you do not have an internet connection established.
Are you using the AE for music streaming without an internet connection?
Haven't tried this myself, but it might eliminate the blinking light:
    1. Open Airport Admin Utility and double click your AE to open the configuration.
    2. Select the Internet tab.
    3. Set to configure manually and enter:
    IP address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router Address 192.168.1.1
    DNS servers 192.168.1.1
If this doesn't work, there probably isn't much you can do except establish a good connection to another router to get the light to turn green. The above numbers shouldn't be terribly important either since you are just trying to get the Airport to think it has an established connection.
