Airport express with Snow and wired Mac Mini?

Hi,
I am trying to help my parents set up airport express.
They have a Mac Mini with no wireless card connected by ethernet to a Snow base station. That is fine, and computer sees the base station in Airport Admin. However, when I try to go to Airport Setup Assistant to set up the Airport Express, I get a message saying that the computer doesn't have a wireless card (which I know) and doesn't allow me to continue.
Is there a known thing where you can't use Airport Express with a Snow base station without a wireless card? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Nevermind, I guess I answered my own question.

  • Apple AirPort Express with Airtunes and Netgear WPN824v2 Router

I'm having some trouble getting the AirPort Express with Airtunes to connect to a Netgear WPN824v2 network.
    Details:
    - Router: Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824v2
    - Wireless Network Security: WEP
    - Computer: MacBook Pro
    - OS: OS X 10.4.10
    - AirPort card in computer: this works fine - no problems
    - AirPort Express with Airtunes: the setup routine goes OK, but then the unit cannot connect to the wireless network; the light blinks amber.
Could the problem relate to the password (Hex versus ASCII) or perhaps WEP versus WPA?
Any / all suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Are you following the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode?
Is the AirPort Express (AX) placed in an area where it can receive a good wireless signal from the Netgear?
Does the AX connect if you disable wireless encryption?
WPA (or WPA2) is much more secure and less troublesome than WEP. If all of your equipment supports WPA, I would switch to WPA.

  • Airport Express with wireless Powerbook, wired PC, and multi printer

I have a Linksys wireless hub which is plugged into my old pc (running xp home)and wirelessly connected to my powerbook (1.67 G4). I also have an Airport Express which I have not yet used. I would like to use both my PC and laptop with this printer, using this same configuration, and I am wondering if I can use my Airport Express to do this.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Since the AirPort Express (AX) only has a single Ethernet port, it can not connect to the Internet AND support wired clients. Therefore the AX would not be able to replace your Linksys.

  • Bridge Airport Express with Snow Airport

I'm thinking of getting an Express so I can print wirelessly to my Canon i850. I already have a Snow that I would like to extend the wireless network with. Can the Snow remain the main router and Express be secondary and still be able to print? Or does the Express has to be the primary router?

The Snow base station cannot become a wireless client of an AirPort Express. The other way around does work.
It really depends on what you are trying to do...What do you want the Express to do? If you need to use the Ethernet port for Internet Access then you are correct that your setup will not work. If all you are using the Express for is the USB port for the printer, then it would work (where your Snow is used for Tivo and Internet).

  • Can an airport express support wireless and wired connection at the same time

im wondering if i can use wireless and wired connection at the same time

The Ethernet port that the old AirPort Express has got is to connect the AirPort Express to your modem, not to connect another PC or Mac, so you can only connect wireless devices to the AirPort Express.
If you have the new AirPort Express, you can connect a wired PC or Mac and more wireless devices or computers at the same tiem

  • Need tablet recommendation for use with CS6 and a Mac Mini

    Hello all,
I'm running CS6 on a Mac MIni with OS X 10.8.3.  I want to start learning graphic design entry on Illustrator and Photoshop and all I've read indicates use of a tablet is de rigueur.  Can anyone recommend a medium to top-end tablet that is compatible with the Mac Mini and CS6?  Apple's site only shows the Wacom Bamboo Splash tablet but doesn't give any hint whether it would work with the Adobe tools.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

Actually it depends on how you like to work and what exactly you're after.
Illustrator can be used with a mouse only when you do just construction work, like using the shape tools, the pen tool, pathfinder functions, transformations and all those other tools that serve the need for exact results.
In case you'd like to draw stuff intuitively like doing water color, calligraphy,  sketching then you would definitely need a tablet.
A tablet can also replace a mouse in case you want to reduce a strain on your hand, arm and fingers. Some people prefer styluses in this case.
Is any of these the case for you?

  • Airport express with itunes and ethernet

I have a question on the airport express and apologize if this is already answered elsewhere, I searched the forum and did not find an answer.
I am using my time capsule as the basis of my wifi network at the house supplying service to my iMac, Macbook, and other wireless devices with no problems. I have three airport express devices.  The first is used to supply a USB drop to the printer.  A second to provide an ehternet drop for the DirectTV.  I recently purchased one of the new model airport express devices to run an airtunes cable to my stereo.
The airport express (old style) providing the ethernet drop to the DirectTV previously had been used to provide iTunes to the stereo, but I could not get it to do both ethernet bridge to DirectTV and the iTunes to the stereo.  That is why I purchased the new one (one to do each job).  Is it possible to have one of these devices provide both the ethernet drop for the TV box and the iTunes?  I would rather only have one device tied up behind the entertainment center (less clutter and free up the third device for other uses).
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

  • Using Airport Express with ONLY a wired desktop.

Is there a way that i may be able to wire straight out ouf a cable modem directly into a 4 port hub and then from there to a desktop and also to the apple airport express? I guess what I'm asking is can I play itunes with an airport express even though i'm not really using it as a wireless router as I'm hardwiring thes desktop and only trying to tuse the airport to play itunes?
    Please help...
    Thanks,
    Scrump

If you aren't using the AX and desktop at the same time, don't use the hub at all. Connect the device that you are using directly to the cable modem.
Whether you use the hub or connect the device you want to use directly to the cable modem, you will most likely need to reset the cable modem any time that you change from one device to another. Most cable modems will only talk to a single device after they boot. Whenever you change the Ethernet connection to another device the cable modem must be reset. Using a router would eliminate this problem since the cable modem would only see the router.

  • Can I use Airport Express with iPhone in my hotel room?

Is there a way to set up an Airport Express in my hotel room when I travel, so that the provided High Speed internet cable in the room can be plugged into my Airport Express, giving me a wireless internet connection for the iPhone? I use Airport Express often this way with my MacBook, so I don't have to be tethered to the cable.

I did this about a month ago when I was in England. I just had the Airport Express with me, and had not done any configurations. I plugged it in and had the iPhone find it. It worked in some hotels, and didn't at others. When it worked it was great. I assume with some of the hotels where it didn't work, that I needed to configure it but since I didn't have my laptop I didn't have any way to configure it. Is there any kind of "universal" or "automatic" configuration you can set it up with?

  • Linking airport express with other airport express or belkin base

is it possible to link my airport express with another and thus have wireless coming from both?
if not, can it be done with anything other than an apple base, namely Belkin?
any help would be appreciated. thanks

You can link two Express units in a WDS network, by configuring one to extend the wireless network of the other.
Airport Express units can extend a Belkin wireless network if you are using a Belkin F5D7230-4 or F5D7231.

  • AirPort Express with Air Tunes and wired router

Do any of you using AirPort Express with Air Tunes as a base station have it connected to a wired router, just as an added precaution?
    thanks,
    --h

As far as I know, AirPort Express w/tunes has a firewall, but a given router may offer more protection options than just a firewall. I'm wondering about security on the wired side of the connection, not the wireless side.

  • Graphite base station not working with my Intel Based Mac Mini and iPhone.

My Airport Express died after 2 years of use. I had to resort to plugging in my old but still functioning Graphite Airport base station. Since the set up assisant on my Mac mini does not work with the older base station, I used my G4 400 tower to set it up. I got it working and tested the connection. On to testing my iPhone. It sees the new network. Password is entered and the wifi icon shows full signal strength, but does not connect to the web. Next I try my Mac mini out on the new network and it too sees the network, but does not connect to the web. I double check the older G4 and the connection is still strong and fast. I shut the G4 down thinking that maybe the Graphite can only support one computer at a time, and the Mac mini and iPhone still can't connect to the web. I'm not sure what to do with this one. Is there a setting that I need to use? As far as security goes, the Graphite base station was set up with a WEP password. Any help would be great

I suggest using AirPort Admin Utility (version 4.2) to check the base station settings and change them, if necessary. (AirPort Admin Utility should be able to configure a Graphite base station from a computer running Mac OS X 10.4, even though AirPort Setup Assistant can't.)
In the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility, please make sure that "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)" are checked, and that everything else is unchecked. I am assuming that the Graphite is the only router in your local network and that there are no computers connected via Ethernet.
The Access Control pane of AirPort Admin Utility should list either all of the relevant AirPort ID's or nothing. You can find the AirPort ID of an OS X computer by looking at System Preferences>Network>Show:AirPort>AirPort.
The Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility should be set in accordance with your Internet provider's requirements. Most likely, it should be set to Connect Using:Ethernet and Configure:Using DHCP.
After verifying the settings, power down the computers, base station and cable or DSL modem for a few minutes, then start them up sequentially, leaving time for each to get fully up and running: first the modem, then the base station, and finally the computers.
The network preferences on the Mac Mini and the iPhone are also relevant. I assume that the preferences are unchanged from those that worked with the AirPort Express.
    I hope this helps.

  • Airport express with hard-wired medem router?

hi there. i've got a hard-wired modem router to my mac and a pc. my mac however has got an airport card in it and i'm thinking of buying a usb wifi dongle thing (?) for the pc and use an airport express station to get wireless internet.
Can anyone please assure me that this set up would work:
    lounge: iMac with aiport card.
bedroom upstairs: pc with usb wifi thing
living room: phone line plugged in modem router, modem router ethernet cabled to airport express plugged in socket on the wall. hi-fi plugged in airport express with stereo jack.
would i get wireless internet on both machines an my tunes wirellesly available on the hi-fi?
    thanks for your patience!
also does anyone know whether i need to let my isp know that i'm intending to use wifi or will it work anyway?

With the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), configured as a "bridge and connected via Ethernet to your wired router, it will act like a Wireless Access Point (WAP). In this configuration, the wired router will continue to provide NAT & DHCP services for both the wired and wireless clients connected to it.
Your proposed network configuration is sound. The only issue I see may be the wireless range. The AX is advertised at 300' for 802.11b (11 Mbps), but building construction materials or other forms of Wi-Fi Interference may limit this range. The end result is that the wireless clients furthest away from the AX may experience weak or poor wireless performance.

  • How do I connect my aiport express to my wired mac mini?

Hi. I have a Airport Express Base Station and I would like to connect it to my Mac Mini via ethernet cord. My Mac Mini is wired only however, no airport installed. I do however have a wireless router.

Macman07, Welcome to the discussion area!
If your wireless router is not an Apple AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or AirPort Express (AX), the chances of you succeeding are nearly zero.
The AX's Ethernet port is ONLY active when the AX wirelessly joins a network using WDS. Very, very, very few non-Apple devices support Apple's WDS.
