AirPort Express with Wifi only (without RJ45 connection)

Hi,
I'm planning to buy an AirPort Express, mostly to share my printer and music. I already have a router, provided by my ISP, which does Wi-fi and has only 2 RJ45 ports, both already taken (Xbox + NAS).
I have a few questions with this setup:
I'm wondering if I can "include" the AirPort Express in my already existing Wi-fi network, without connecting it with an RJ45 cable?
If so, will I still benefit from the AirPort Utility application, or will I be totally dependent on my existing router's configuration?
What about 802.11n? Will my Macs be able to benefit from it, even if the router doesn't support it?
Finally, is what I'm trying to achieve simple to setup?

Yes, the AX can connect to your network using wireless.

You will use AirPort Utility to configure the device and make any subsequent changes.

If your existing network is 802.11g, the Express will "join" that network and operate as a "g" device. Your computers will continue to connect exactly as they do now using 802.11g.

For most users...yes, as AirPort Utility walks you through a series of 5-6 steps to connect. But a few users have difficulty. That's what this forum is for.

I want to connect an Airport Express via WiFi to my internet connection and then connect its LAN port to the WAN port of a Time Capsule. Will then any device connected to the time capsule wirelessly be also connected to the internet?

Background is I can't hook up my time capsule directly to my internet connection via network cable. I tried to extend the network via Wifi, but that did not work. The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

I have a wifi network provided by a Netgear router. Can I extend it in WDS with an Airport Express? In other words, does the airport express go in WDS with a Netgear wifi?

This is one of those things where you really won't know until you try. If you need to extend your Netgear router, you really should use a Netgear device to do it to insure compatibility.
The reason for this is that WDS was never adopted as an official standard, so the chances of one device working with another manufacturers device are open to question.
If you want to try the AirPort Express, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance before you buy.
I would be extremely surprised if it worked with an Apple device, but I suppose anything is possible.
Please post on your results if you try the Apple product.

Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

Airport Express with D-Link router?

I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:

o 802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)

Air Port in my Imac and Airport Express with my 360

Hi all,
Not sure if Im being nieve but I am trying to set up a network between my Imac and an airport express, with the ulitmate goal of connecting my Xbox 360 to that network. My imac has an airport card and Ihave tried doing the WDS setup any help that any one can offer would be great.

Just clarifying things here, is it still possible to connect a 360 (via MS' networking adaptor) to a wireless network created by an iMac's built-in airport? Currently I'm using a network encrypted by a WEP password which works all fine and dandy with my MacBook. On the 360, it recognises the network, allows me to enter the password and connects, only to tell me when testing the XBL connection that the wireless network is not connected. The same problem happened when I took off the security. Is there a way around this apart from connecting an ethernet cable to my MacBook/directly into the router?

Connect airport express with rj45

my internet connection is using a rj11 "phone cable", how can i connect my airport express with it? once i plug it into my AE it seems that my fixed line is "in use" and i don´t have internet signal on it.

It is not possible to connect a phone line directly to the AirPort Express, since the AirPort Express is a simple router only.
The phone line must first connect to a broadband modem.
Then the modem connects to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express using an CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends.

Apple Airport Express - drops wifi connections after a day or two.....??

Dear Users,
Can anyone assist me, I have 2 Apple Airport Express recievers and an Apple TV2 connected to my iMac. The Apple TV is connected via ethernet and a gigabit switch via the BT Infinity Router. The 2 Apple Airport Expresses are connected via wiresles to the BT router.
Everything works fine, music streams perfectly most of the time.
But after 24-48 hours of being dorment the Router seems to drop the wireless connections to the Apple Airport Expresses, if you reboot the router they connect again immediatley. I have adjusted the router settings to 802.1n, instead of 802.1n/b/g, which seemed to work better for a few days and the connection never dropped and now the problem has started again.
Frankly its not the end of the world, but it means I have to reboot the router everytime we want to use all zones for music, which when you have a wife that moans that 'my setup is too complicted and has to be rebooted everytime', it would be great to resolve this for once and all.....
Have a I missed something simple or do I need a new router/Airport Extreme?

The whole idea here is to test by first powering off your "extending" AirPort.
Then, take a measurement with your laptop at the location of the "extending" AirPort.....to see what quality of signal that it is receiving. Remember, it can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives.
You would want to see a minimum SNR of 25 at the location of your "extending" AirPort Express. Higher would be better. If it is less than 25, you need to move the "extending" Express closer to the "main" router so that it will receive a better quality signal to extend.
Once you have a location with a decent SNR of 25 or higher, then power the "extending" Express back up at that location.

Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.

Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone. I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address. I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default. It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence. Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

You need to pay attention to something, while extending your network with the latest AirPort Express upgrade, your devices will be connected to it except your iPhone, you'll see your iPhone always connected to the capsule instead, even if you're at 1 foot from the AirPort Express.
You need to change the radio settings from automatic to 802.11a - 802.11b/g on your capsule, then I put it back to the default settings...
Now in the AirPort utility you should see your iPhone connected to the AirPort

Horrible playback issues with iTunes 8 and Airport Express over Wifi

Hello folks,
I just upgraded to iTunes 8, and since then, I've been unable to get good playback from my Airport Express with iTunes on my Macbook Pro.
I get between 5-30 seconds of continuous playback, then a hiccup, ad nauseum, ad inifintum. A five minute track usually ends up taking six-seven minutes to complete, and it's like listening to a CD skip.
Both the Macbook Pro and the Airport Express are communicating over 802.11n, and worked well before the upgrade to iTunes 8. On my older, slower, crappier Powerbook which only has 802.11g but runs iTunes 7 (in the same room, about two feet from the other laptop), playback is rock solid.
I've noticed when I monitor the WLAN interface on my MBP with 'netstat -in', I'm seeing a lot of Ierrs, but there's nothing in any of the system logs to indicate a hardware problem (yet, anyway).
Has anyone else had this issue since upgrading? Should I be looking to get my WLAN NIC fixed, or is it an issue with iTunes 8? Are there diagnostic applications I can use to perform hardware confidence tests on the WLAN NIC?

My AirPort Express optical out has this problem as well, stutter and very bad sound. But only the new 802.11n modell. A older 802.11g model works without a problem.
It worked well until I upgraded to iTunes 8, I bought in in May.
I just had my AirPort Express 802.11n replaced under warranty by Apple but the new unit has the same problem.
Everyone who is using the optical out and have the stutter problem needs to write to Apple about it so they realize it's a problem and fix it.

Can no longer connect to Airport Express with upgrade to iTunes 10.1

Since I upgraded to iTunes 10.1 I can no longer connect to my Airport Express (unknown error-15000). Another computer on my betwork running an older version of iTunes still works on the Airport Express.
Any ideas? I have tried to uninstall and reinstall airport express with no success.

Rather than disabling the firewall, try making sure you've got exceptions in it for BonJour. Although the following document is about a different error message, the instructions in there are worth trying. (At step 7, make sure there's an exception for BonJour as well.)
