Airport Express works fine - why doesn't Time Capsule?

Hi - I have a new Time Capsule and am very excited to get this working. Previously I have used an Airport Express to create a wireless network with very few issues. I worked through all the various setup including updating all my software. I've completed the setup via the airport utility and everything seems to work save my internet connectivity. The odd thing that I know I have a live connection via my ethernet cable given that it works fine with my airport express. I have tried all the recos as regards turning the modem and TC off / on for more than a few times. Does anyone have any advice that might help? Thanks very much, Jeff

Well you can't do it with a Time Capsule.
You could get an Apple TV instead of an Air Port Express and then you can get video as well..

airport express worked fine now shows only constant amber light ?

A solid amber light indicates that the AirPort Express cannot get out of startup mode.....likely because of a power supply issue within the device.
Try a Factory Default Reset as a last resort to see if that might help. To do this....
Power off the AirPort Express and wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express first, and keep holding it for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back into power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart
At this point, if the Express is operating correctly, the amber light will be blinking slowly and you can reconfigure the Express again.
If the amber light remains solid after a few reset attempts, the internal power supply on the Express is faulty and the device will need to be replaced.

  • Airport Express works fine with non-Apple products???

I've owned my Airport Express for 2 years now and never a problem until this morning.  Now, the airport express is powered on, green light and all, connected to cable modem, but my Early 2008 Macbook Pro and iPhone 4 will not connect to it.  Funny though, because it shows up in my list of networks on both devices.  When I try to select it from the list (of course it used to connect automatically, now it doesn't connect at all), neither the MBP nor the iPhone can establish a connection with it.  Sometimes the iPhone asks for a password, even though the password hasn't changed and it is stored in the device.  It should also be noted that both the iPhone 4 and MBP can still see and connect to my neighbors' wireless routers within range.
Now for the really weird part: the Airport Express still connects to and performs at 100% with other devices, including 1) my Dell running Windows Vista, 2) my XBox 360, 3) HTC Thunderbolt phone, and 4) a Sony Blu Ray player with wireless internet capabilities.  I have power cycled all of the equipment at least 5 times, and all of the non-Apple devices continue to connect to the Airport Express just fine, while the iPhone 4 and MBP cannot connect.  I have even installed Airport Utility on the Dell and did a full factory reset of the Airport Express, but that didn't fix the problem either.
    What is going on here?

At first we could plug the Dell in directly but that was before setting up the AX. Now that the AX works the Dell cannnot connect even wired. (It says that it's connected but it cannot find server when you try to open a webpage). Could this be a problem that the moden cannot go between Mac & windows?
Most modems tend to "remember" the last device connected to it, so it's important to do a complete power-down/power-up when switching devices. It's possible that your modem did this when you attempted to connect the PC directly. My purpose of having you connect the PC directly was to verify that it can access the Internet with a wired connection and that it's wireless setting needs to be troubleshot further.
The power recycle process should be something like the following:
    - Power-off the modem & AX; If possible, leave the modem off overnight.
    - Power-on the modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.

  • Airport Express works, but MacBook doesn't when connected directly to Modem

I have an interesting problem. I have Verizon DSL. Airport Express works, but Linksys and Netgear wifi routers don't work. Further more, if I disconnect the wifi router and directly connect a MacBook or a Windows notebook they don't work. These devices work if I enter a static IP address though. It is DHCP that doesn't work.
I have been using Verizon DSL for several years, and most recently I was using a Netgear wifi router. A few days ago it lost internet connection. Thinking that the Netgear broke, I bought a new Linksys WRT54GL to replace it. But it didn't work either. I happened to have an Airport Express lying around, so I connected that and surprisingly it worked! Then I wrote down the IP address shown by Airport Utility and typed that IP into Netgear as a static IP address and it worked too. If I remove all wifi equipment and connect a Windows PC or a MacBook directly to the DSL modem then neither works. (Note: my DSL modem doesn't use PPPoE it uses DHCP.)
So it seems that something changed with Verizon's DHCP such that only Airport Express can work. Contacting Verizon support was useless. What is so magical about Airport Express? I can't use Airport Express permanently because I have 3 wired computers to connect also, and Airport Express have ethernet ports. Airport Extreme does, so I am wondering if I should get one of those. Will the magic of Airport Express work in Extreme also?
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?

Hello petilon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?
It sounds like Verizon is keying on the MAC address of the device connected to its modem ... so either they require that you register a MAC address with them or there is a problem with the modem in that it is retaining it even though you change the device connected.
If you haven't already, be sure to perform a complete power recycle when changing out network equipment. The following should be done each time:
o Power-down, the modem, router, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical. If the modem has a backup battery, it should be removed and replaced to make sure that any stored configuration information is erased.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the router; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).

  • Why doesn't time capsule come with AirPlay and an audio out plug? I have to buy an Airport Express station and put it right on top of my time capsule to wire it to my stereo. Doesn't make sense...

My Time Capsule is right by my stereo and would like to stream my itunes there. But it looks like I would have to add an Airport express station right on top of my time capsule to do this. Which doesn't make sense to have 2 wireless routers on top of each other. Is that the only way?

Well you can't do it with a Time Capsule.

  • Airport Express works fine with iBook but isn't seen by Dell laptop

I have an Airport Express connected to the internet which is automatically recognized by my iBook & works fine. In other words usually when the wireless card recognizes a network it pops up in the taskbar and it isn't with the airport. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Why doesn't time capsule appear in airport utility?

I have the 3TB time capsule just bought last year.  It has been working perfectly fine for all of this time when suddenly my internet connection was slowed to a snails pace.  I reset the modem, the time capsule, etc. and nothing worked.  I called comcast and the guy says the modem is out of sync and he reset it and everything was perfect.  Later that day, it slowed again.  When I called Comcast he said everything is good from the cable side it must be the router (in this case the time capsule).  I opened the airport utility and I was connected to wifi but the time capsule doesnt appear.  It says it cant find any base stations.
I googled the web and tried many things including hard reset, updating IPv6 to link-local only, etc.  When I am connected hard wire to the modem it works fine but as soon as i disconnect and go wireless it no longer can find the base station.  The wireless network and speed work fine I just cant connect to the base station for time machine backups, access my drive etc.
    HELP!

Do a full factory reset.. this is different to hard reset and is recommended when you run into issues.
Mountain Lion does have a bug with the TC in lossing it. The latest firmware was supposed to fix the problem but I doubt it is working.. ie 7.6.4 ..
    I would do the following.
    1. Take the firmware back to 7.6.1
You simply hold the option key whilst clicking the number of the version in the airport utility. Select the firmware you want.. and it will do the downgrade.
    2. Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    3. Redo the setup with a completely clean set of names.. which are SMB standard.. ie short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Set wireless 5ghz to a different name.
Set security to WPA2 personal with 8-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
Set wireless channels manually .. use 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz try each in turn in that order.
Use around 40 and around 150 for 5ghz.
    4. Test with ethernet.. wireless is never a great test. You never know if the issue is somewhere else. Ethernet is more reliable.

  • Airport Express Won't Play Ball With Time Capsule + WEP Security

    Hi,
Not sure which forum to post this in so I might try both...
I have recently switched from using an Airport Extreme to Time Capsule as my main base station. It works fine. I also have to connect a rather ancient PC + wireless networking card to this network and it seems to be the case that I can only get this to work when I switch the wireless security mode to WEP.
The problem is that when I set up my Airport Express to extend the network it doesn't work properly. I follow the setup procedure in the Airport Utility, the green light comes on on the express, but it's not joining the network correctly. If I connect a computer to the network via the express it appears to work (get connection, correct network name) but I'm getting a self-assigned IP address and therefore no 'real' connection.
Please help! Which setting should the security be on on the Express. The options don't seem to match those on the Time Capsule, for instance I have two options for WEP (64 bit and 128 bit) and only one option on the Time Capsule which makes no mention of bit depth. Confusing.

manually set the Express in bridge mode then configure your wireless setting. I usually set the secondary routers to create their own wireless network. I like to keep all computer devices separate from each other by connecting them to different routers. Main set for N only at 5 GHZ and others set to N+B/G 2.4 GHZ.

  • Airport Express for Itunes Invisible After Adding Time Capsule to AX Networ

One step forward, one step back.
I have an airport express linked to my airport extreme network for itunes streaming. It's worked fine forever. I recently added a time capsule to the extreme network for backup purposes using Time Machine. The extreme and TC form a single network are both connected via ethernet. The TC and express are in the same room. Time machine now is working fine. However, the airport extreme is no longer visible in itunes or airport utility. The light is green on the express and I was able to verify the settings when connecting it directly with an ethernet cable.
In setting up the AX/TC network, it called for the setting 'extend this network' not to be checked. Could that be it? As I recall, it wasn't anyway.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
    JB

Got this working by directly connecting the Express and TC with and ethernet cable. I don't know if this is the right way for this to work since the two devices just happen to be near enough to do that. That said... I'm happy it's working.

  • Why doesn't Time Capsule appear in Disk Utility anymore?

Time Machine gave me a msg that it was unable to back up yesterday due to a problem with an image on my iMac (21.5") drive. It said to repair the external drive I'm using with Disk Utility. I tried the Time Capsule I'm using and which is hooked up and has worked fine for months does not appear.  Why?
Also got a msg today saying: "backup cannot be complete due to unexpected error. Code -6584"  Never had such a problem before Mt. Lion.
I see no forum category for Time Machine or Time Capsule.

You need to verify the backup.
Hold the option key while clicking the Time Machine icon on the top right menu area.
But reboot the TC beforehand.. maybe the whole network.
The error is well known.. see

  • Can I Use 802.11n Base Station and 802.11n AirPort Express in an 802.11 ac Time Capsule Main Base Station WDS Network?

I havea "wirelessly challenged" 2-story home and need to extend the range.  Currently I have an 802.11n Main Base Station with an 802.11n Airport Express Remote.  It's not getting the job done (upstairs connection is weak).
I am considering getting an 802.11ac Airport Time Capsule to help, even though I currently only have devices with 802.11n wireless connectivity (future-proof a little).
I an planning on setting up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) Network:
1.) Setting up the Time Capsule as the Main Base Station connected to a Cable modem
2.) Reconfiguring and Setting up the current AirPort Extreme 802.11n as a Relay Base Station
3.) Reconfiguring and Setting up the current AirPort Express 802.11n as a Remote Station
I cannot "hard wire" one Base Statio to the other.
    Will this work?

    Will this work?
Unfortunately, no.  WDS is a older, very inefficient way to extend the wireless network signal.
As such, newer operating systems like Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks do not even offer settings for this older WDS type of network.
In addition, the new Time Capsule has no capabilities to use WDS settings at all, even if you used a Mac with another operating system to try to set things up.
Even if it were possible to set up a WDS network, the speed on the network would be incredibly slow. As you know, WDS only operates at "g" wireless speed levels. Each "relay" or "remote" that you add to the network each cuts that bandwidth or speed in half.
With a WDS "main", "relay" and "remote", the network would be operating at about 14 Mbps......a tiny fraction of what the devices would be capable of providing normally.

  • Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express, Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express

Hi, I would like to know whether I can link up one time capsule with two airport express. The result why is that I would like to put one time capsule at first floor, two airport express at 2nd floor and 3rd floor. All these three share one network. Please advise. Thanks.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

  • Is Airport Express the best way to extend Time Capsule wifi network?

I have a Time Capsule which I use for wifi as well as backups. I would like to extend its wifi range. Is an Airport Express the best way to do this? Or would an Airport Extreme get better range? Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions!
You did not mention whether you are trying to extend using wireless only, but we'l assume that this is the case.
The AirPort Express and the AirPort Extreme have the same range, so there would be no difference in performance between the two devices.
If you have a newer dual band Time Capsule, a dual band AirPort Extreme would extend both bands...IF....the AirPort Extreme is positioned where it can receive a strong signal from the Time Capsule. The AirPort Extreme would also provide you with 3 ethernet ports if you needed to connect any ethernet devices.
The AirPort Express will extend one band, as it is a single band device, but that may be all you need. Since the AirPort Express can plug directly into an AC outlet, it is usually somewhat easier to place the device where it will be needed.
A good location for an extending device is a point that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from the Time Capsule to the area that will need more wireless coverage, assuming there no major obstructions in the signal path. The idea situation would have the extending device placed where it has close to a line-of-sight relationship with the main router.
Post back if you need configuration details on the extending device, or if you need more information.

  • Using airport express to extend network of 2tb time capsule.

Is it possible to use my old airport express using 802.11g to extend the network of my 2tb time capsule using 802.11ac protocol?  If so, how?

You will need to use one of the 802.11n versions of the AirPort Express....either the model A1264 or A1392....if you want to wirelessly extend the signal from the Time Capsule.
The older 802.11b/g Express does not have the capability to do what you want.

  • Airport express as network extension for a time capsule lose connection repeatedly

    Hello,
I boght recently two airport express in order to extent my timecapsule wifi. Installation as a network extension was no problem thanks airport software.
But both AP express repeatedly lose connection, sometimes after hours, sometimes after some minutes, even if they are just a few meters away from the time capsule.
What is the reason and what can I do to avoid this annoyingly behaviour?
    Thanks for helping!

Hi - it can be used as an wired or wireless extender of your time capsule network or it can just join the network wirelessly and provide a remote ethernet connection - in all cases the USB port can be used for a printer only.
