Airport Exteme but no Panther

Hi. I just ordered an Airport Extreme Base Station and was so excited to connect it to my iMac and iBook but just discovered — yes, my fault — that I need OS 10.4 to install the necessary software.
Ugh.
I am running 10.3.9 on both machines.
So now I am back to square one ... it does not appear that this device will help me. I'm looking to use my iBook wirelessly. My iMac doesn't have an airport card, but it has an airport slot (it's the flat panel G4). My iBook does have an airport card.
What are my wireless options?

In this context, g refers to the 802.11g protocol,
which is slower than 802.11n; the built-in AirPort
card on an iBook isn't capable of 802.11n. More
information is available in
this article.

So if I were to purchase the 802.11g base station (probably from eBay, right? otherwise, where else can I find it?) then it will work with my iBook, my G4 flat panel iMac and OS 10.3.9?
Just making sure, because I was advised from an earlier post that the airport extreme that i just ordered from Apple would work and it does not, so I guess I'll be returning it.
Thanks!

I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes. Does this occur with the newer version?

    1)  If the reception comes and goes as a result of wireless interference from other sources in your home and around the home...other wireless networks in the neighborhood....or...nearby cordless phones.....then a new router is likely to experience the same issues. See this Apple support document for symptoms and fixes of wireless interference.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
    2) If the reception comes and goes as a result of an aging power supply in the older AirPort Exteme or another component that is intermittently acting up, then a new router should take care of that.
What we cannot tell you is whether 1) or 2) applies to your situation.  If possible, it would be good idea to take the older AirPort to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

  • My PC can connect to the airport extreme but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues, any help.

My PC can connect to the new airport extreme I just purchased but with encryption it cannot connect to the internet my iMac has no issues.  If I open the airport exteme up and provide no security everything is fine which leads me to believe it is something with the encryption between the two devices.  Not sure what step I'm missing here this shouldn't be this difficult.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

  • Airport exteme n nightmare....

any help here would be greatly appreciated. I feel like a rubber ball bouncing between time warner cable and macmall where I purchase the apple exteme n. And I don't even want to mention Apple, who I can't even find a phone # for. My airport exteme will not connect to the internet and I have come to the conclusion it has to do with DHCP and IP address conflicts. Time Warner says it's apple problem, Macmall says it's Time Warner and the apple exteme instructions says get on the internet to figure it out?? How do you get on the internet if it wont' work?? I don't get it... I am at a week of trying to figure this out... any help would be cool... ps. my dlink which I originally had hooked up works fine... that's how I got on the internet to get here... Also, why does apple guide us to forums to do there tech support instead of providing tech support phone # in the instructions????

    Try the following...
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem & AEBS. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - While the modem & AEBS are powered-down, but before you power-down your computer:
    - Go to the Library/SystemConfiguration folder.
    - Drag the SystemConfiguration folder to your desktop. This will clear any previous network setting preferences. (Note: After you power-on the computer, OS X will rebuild this folder with the default values.)
    - Power-down your computer.
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer

  • I have 5 airport exteme and 3 express

Which it the BEST way to make a large Network. If I use Extend a Wireless network, I can connect to the first 2 Airports, same setup in the 8 airports but I cannot get GOOD signal from the airport four or five, it alwayas tries to use number 2, even if I'm close to the number 4 airport. This doesn't happend if I use WDS, but of course, network performance suffers. All are N airports. Is there any limit to get a network extended?

I still say use Ethernet over powerline. I think this will work for you because, you will have to plug in the WiFi routers/APs. Use the other outlet to plugin the Ethernet over powerline adapter and you will have an extended network. There are also adaptors for cable(TV) wire phone wire. So if there are theses cables near by and Ethernet over powerline adapters don't do it try this.
Also maybe you don't need to use all the airports, just use better antennas.
The site below has antenna boosters that might help
    http://www.wifi-link.com/set_ap.php
Also there are other ways to link WiFi routers. If you use a different frequency then the Wifi your useing you can use line-of-sight antennas and link the routes that way. You can connect your airport exteme, useing a small ethernet cable to a router using anther freq. Doing this you setup a link. Click on link for picture of what i'm taking about.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • HT5022 I'm trying to add a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

I'm trying to add my HP wireless printer as a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

Why would you need to ADD a new Client. Unless the APE sytem is completely different then any other Wireless router the printer should get an IP address from the router. That is IF the printer is setup to get an IP from the LAN DHCP server.
Now you may want to make that IP it does get a Staticly assign IP address so it never changes, which will screw up printing if it does change. But i don't know if you can do that with APE routers.

  • I'm trying to access airport utilities but I cant log in beca. I have a blank password PLEASE HELP ME SOON!

the login thing will only accept written passwords and i have a blank one.

If you never established a device password for the Extreme, the default is
    public
If that does not work, then you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Exteme to get it back to default settings and then reconfigure it again.
Might be a good idea to write down those passwords.

  • Disk Shows Up in AirPort Utility But Not On Network

I have a brand new AEBS. My network consists of my Windows XP box and an Apple TV.
Using MacDrive, I formatted my external hard drive to HFS+. It is blank. When I plug it into my AEBS I can see it under the Disks pane in AirPort Utility, but cannot find it on the network (and obviously it doesn't auto-mount).
Currently my machine is part of a Windows Active Directory domain (it is my work laptop). However, I've tried logging into the machine itself (rather than the domain) and setting up a Workgroup that I then set under the File Sharing tab of AirPort Utility. Same result.
I've tried all of the suggestions I've read so far, such as mounting from the IP of the base station and the name of the disk. Nothing. Disabled my firewall. Nothing.
Any help would be appreciated. Also, it would obviously be the best case scenario if I could mount the drive while logged into the domain. I'm not sure what I should place as the Workgroup under the File Sharing pane for that. I've tried the name of the domain and the name of the domain's network, but neither work. I guess this would be tackled once I can see the disk at all while not logged into the domain.
    Thanks,
    Chad

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Right now I'm actually thinking about just returning the AEBS.

  • I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

    Welcome!
Only one variant of the PowerMac G4 could use the faster Airport Extreme Card. The rest used the original Airport card that is pretty slow.
To get fast wireless without buying more than one thing, consider this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
It goes in an available PCI slot
There are USB solutions also. However, all PowerMac G4 towers had only slower USB 1.1 ports, so any USB wireless adaptor can only run at about wireless 'B" speeds (slow) unless you also install a PCI USB 2.0 adaptor card. Doing that would allow a USB wireless adaptor to run at its maximum rated speed. These items working together would accomplish that:
    USB wireless "dongle:"
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
    USB PCI adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Popularity%7c1&Ne=5 000&N=7069&Ntt=USB+PCI
Each approach has its advantages. The PCI wireless card is a one-piece solution that takes up no desk space. The USB2 card+USB2 Dongle gives you more fast ports for transferring date from other external USB devices (primarily cameras and external hard drives) at hugely faster rates than can the original ports. I have a USB 2 PCI card in my G4 tower strictly for transferring images from my digital SLR camera in a timely manner.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • I own an imac 2011 running osx 10.6.8. I want to the new airport extreme. but it says in the system requirements that it needs osx lion 1.7.5 or later. would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?

In order to set up and install the new AirPort Extreme:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?
Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.
Only the devices listed above can be used to set up and make any changes to the new AirPort.
