Airport Extreem behavior with legacy devices?

I have all Wireless n devices (iPad, iPod Touch, Macbook Air, etc.)
Has anyone experienced if the new Airport Extreem shows any improvement in behavior over the old version?
Thanks
-Mike

The new Extreme will not really provide significant improvement with normal "n" devices, but the signal range will likely be a bit better on the new Extreme mostly in part due to an improved antenna design.
I would estimate the range improvement to be 5-10% as a result of some informal tests that I've done with the product here. No way to predict what your results might be, however.
If you are in the market for a new router, then the new AirPort is probably worth a look, particularly if you plan to add 802.11ac computers in the next few years.

  • Does Airport Extreem work with Xfinity modem?

The new Xfinity modem worked for about 11/2 weeks with my Airport Extreem to my iMac then it was 1/2 there and not doing all search or browsing on the internet.  Comcast could not help on line or the phone.  The Xfinity modem has wireless capabilities but when I hook through Airport all is mixed up or not working. Should I use Xfinity wireless or get a new Airport or is there some problem I don't see?  Thanks

So I am suggesting that you can use it with the Xfinity modem without any problems.

  • Global failure on sending emails with legacy devices (with BIS subscription)

    Hi there,
Is anybody having troubles sending emails since 5 PM CET ?
Service got suddenly cut around that time today Saturday April 4 (getting a red cross and a message status : "Global Failure")
    - sent service books
    - registrered now (in Host Routing Table options)
    - run a diagnotic with BDA (Blackberry Device Analyzer)
    Everything looked fine.
Receiving emails is no an issue. BBM and PIN message are fine.
Talked to a technical support rep of my carrier. He could not connect/log in to the Blackberry Provisioning Administration Tool for carrier/provider.
There is definitely an issue ongoing with NOC infrastructure related to sending emails.
Let me know whether you have got the same issue and where you are.
    Jeremie
    Carrier : Proximus
    Country : Belgium
    Device : Bold 9900

    RESOLVED!!
Issue lasted from 5PM CET till 9:15 PM CET.
After 4h15 min of blackout on our sending email feature, NOC team seems having resolved the issue. We can reply and send email from all our email accounts using our legacy device with BIS subscription.
    Regards.

  • Airport Express works with every device except base PC

I recently purchased an Airport Express to replace my dead Netgear wireless router. After installing the software on my laptop (which is also new, but worked with the old Netgear router), I was unable to connect to the network. My iPad, our iPhones, and her laptop all connect easily. I've tried rebooting my Comcast modem, and several other things I've read in forums to no avail. Did I miss something when setting up the software? I'm no exactly tech savvy when it comes to this kind of stuff, so any help you guys could give would be awesome!!

Change the channel on the Airport Express to a channel between 1 and 11 and see if that makes a difference.

  • Strange behavior with USB devices

I got arch installed at home and at work. Recently on both machines I got a black screen with dmesg output after connecting the usb device (android tablet and iriver player). I could get back my screen with CTRL+ALT+F7, but then my usb ports stopped working and dmesg shows nothing, after I connected the devices for the second time. I was able to get them running only after the reboot( It doesn't happen every time I connect a device, but it happened twice already, so I though I should write a feedback.

If you look at this, then it appears that it may be a kernel problem:
    http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-scsi/msg55636.html
But if you drill down into that thread, a developer says the real problem is "The implication from the trace seems to be that something allowed blkid to open a non existent device."
Then when I look at your log, it shows that the failing job is:
    Dec  5 10:02:01 pshkadko kernel: [585770.321427] Pid: 16515, comm: hald-addon-stor Not tainted 3.1.1-1-ARCH #1
I wonder if the problem is somehow tied to using the depreciated hal daemon... but this is a total guess.

  • Administration of an Airport Extreem Base Station from Windblows XP??

My parents both have PC laptops with Windblows XP (gag, yea I know I'll swith them some day or die trying). They live in the country where they have no choice but dialup, so there is always a battle for who gets the phone line.
Question: If I buy them an Airport Extreem Base with the modem can they administer it from within Windblows XP?
The FAQ's were a bit confusing on this. Some places say administration by MAC OSX only other places talked about a windows admin tool.
mac-mini, powerbook, Dell XPS   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Question: If I buy them an Airport Extreem Base with
the modem can they administer it from within
    Windblows XP?
    Yes.
They will need to use a Java utility to control the modem.
Jon Sevy has a Java Utility for this purpose.

You will need Java in order to run the utility

How do I set up a wireless network with an AirPort Extreme base station and two airport extreme but between apple devices either by ethernet

This Apple support document provides good general information on configuring different types of neworks using multiple AirPort routers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
In particular, you would want to focus on the information regarding a "Roaming Network"

  • I just set up the airport wireless modem - with a comcast internet router - all wireless device connect seemlessly (3 Iphones, Mac Air, and a Sony Laptop) but my IPAD 1 no longer connects.  It tries to but never connects.  I have reset it and have utility

Do you mean an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to a Comcast Modem?

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Having issues with multiple devices connecting to AirPort

    Hello All
I'm having an issue when people come to visit. It seems my network goes haywire once they get here with their devices.
My network consits of an Airport Extreme and two Airport Expresses connected to a cable modem. On the network I have two iMacs, Mac Pro, two TiVos, Xbox 360, Foscam Secutity camera, two iPad minis, iPod, iPhone 4S and an iPhone 3GS. They are all connected to the main network login.
When guests come over, most weekends my girl and her daughter, they have two iPhones, and iPad 2 and an iPad mini. Once they get here, we all seem to get knocked offline. Some devices stay connected at times, but most, if not all, get knocked offline. I assumed it was something wrong with one of their devices. They connect with the Guest login.
This weekdend we had some friends visiting and my girl and her daughter were not here. These friends showed up with two iPhones, a MacBook Pro, an iPad mini, iPod and a kindle. Same thing happended...all knocked off line. They also connected with the Guest login.
Are there limits to the number of devices? If so, I wouldn't think I am hitting that limit, could it be that low?
Thank you in avance for any input or assistance.
    Cooch

I have the Express units that look like a white AppleTV. Not the ones that plug directly into the wall, they have a power cable. I believe they are 2nd Generation.
Yes, those would be 2nd generation Express base stations and they should be able to support up to fifty wireless connections.
Are both of these connected back to the Extreme with a wireless or wired connection? Regardless of which are they both configured to extend the Extreme's Wi-Fi range?
I am assuming that you have this network configured to also support a guest network ... correct?
The Extreme is not the latest tall one, it's the one just before they released the new one.
That should make your Extreme a 5th generation model, which is just fine.
Do the Express devices count as wireless connections?
    Yes.
Even if I include the Express devices, I have 14 connections. If two people come to my home with two devices each, I am still under 20 connections. All Airports and devices are on the same level of the house, approximately 1000 square foot area, with open doors into every room.
Yes, according to the number of devices you stated, this should work.
The only idea I have at this time is to temporarily disable the guest networking feature. Once done, see if you still have the issue. Do you?

You can keep the one Apple ID for purchases and then create another one for a personal account for contacts and calendars. The article below will assist further

I have an airport extreem network that works with my two MacBooks and a iMAC.  I am having no luck in getting a PC (IBM ThinkPad0 that has the PC airport software to be recognized by the network.  Any suggestions?

When you introduced the AirPort Extreme, you had a condition where you have two routers in series. The simpliest solution is to reconfigure the downstream router (in this case the Extreme) as a bridge. This will allow the upstream router to provide the required NAT & DHCP services to all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to.
To reconfigure the Extreme as a bridge, you will use the AirPort Utility. (Note: I will provide the steps for using AirPort Utility v5.x)
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

  • Should I buy airport express, extreme or time capsule?  I have my new Mac Pro. 2 iPhones, 2 iPads , and grandchildren who come with their devices.  I live in a two-level house.

A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive to allow your Mac(s) to back up automatically, so it's a logical choice if you need a wireless router and back up capabilities for your Macs
The AIrPort Extreme has a bit better antenna arrangement than an AirPort Express, so it would be a good choice for a two level house.
Depending on the location of the "main" wireless router, you may find that you still need to add an extender or two in other parts of the house for full, fast wireless coverage. The AirPort Express is a good choice for this duty.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.
