Airport extreme 2009: how to downgrade security to WEP

Hi,
I have installed a new Airport Extreme (2009) and experiencing the following problem:
The airport extreme software (7.4.1) does NOT allow me to encript my network with a simple WEP pasword( like before). (only WPA(2))..
Some pC devices with older hardware cannot connect..
How can downgrade my security to WEP encoding?

I wasn't aware that Extreme cannot use WEP encryption. I don't have the newest Extreme, but that would surprise me as I believe XBOX uses WEP. Are you certain?
As well, what OS are the PCs you have running? I believe XP SP2 supports WPA2.

Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem. How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

How did you move the music to the external drive? What exactly is on the drive? The entire iTunes folder or only music? If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier. If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move. iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

Two hard drives connected to Airport Extreme. How to include one of them in TimeMachine Backup and use other disc as Time Machine backup disc?

the title says it all. I've got an airport extreme and two hard drives connected to it. My idea was to use one as my additional storage (say DISC STORAGE) and the other one as my backup drive (say DISC BACKUP). I would like to backup my mac AND DISC STORAGE together to DISC BACKUP using time machine. My mac has 256 GB HDD, DISC STORAGE is 1 TB big, DISC BACKUP 2 TB. So there are no space issues.
Problem: DISC STORAGE is not included in Time Machine's backup to DISC BACKUP. At the moment, only the mac is backed up to DISC BACKUP.
Does anybody know if and how I can include DISC STORAGE in the backup process?
By the way, DISC STORAGE is not listed in the "exclude from backup" list in Time Machine.

Unforrtunately, Time Machine cannot backup from a network drive to another drive. Time Machine will only backup a Mac and a drive that is directly attached to the Mac, via USB or FireWire.
You will need to use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SupoerDuper to be able to backup from DISC BACKUP to DISC STORAGE.

Airport Extreme (2009) USB disk & Xbox 360?

Hi all
Does anybody know if an Xbox 360 should be able to see the a USB Airport Disk over the wireless network?
Setup is as follows; Xbox 360 connecting to Airport extreme over 5GHz 802.11a using genuine MS Xbox wireless adapter. Connects to Live just fine. Open NAT. Streams media from connected Vista shared folders and also Media Centre.
I have connected an external USB drive (Tried as both HFS+ & Fat32 format) to the Airport Extreme. All PC's on the network wired & wireless can access the shared files. Xbox 360 cannot see the external drive over the network no matter what. Have tried connecting via guest network with no security. Drive is seen just fine plugged directly into the Xbox via USB. Am I wasting my time?

I'm gonna have to bump as well as I've been looking into this setup (Airport Extreme with USB Attached Hard Drive formatted HFS+ & Xbox 360). I've done many searches on these two products working together and no solution yet. I've read of other (non Apple) routers having a third party software allowing xbox 360 to see usb attached NAS.. Hoping Airport Extreme can provide this solution instead

Sharing my internet connection TO an airport extreme? How can I do this..

My Mac Pro is connected directly to my modem on Ethernet port 1 (Eth-1).
The connection is solid and my Mac Pro can browse the internet.
What I am now trying to accomplish is to share my internet connection with my family who is using an Airport Extreme Base Station.
My setup is as follows:
Modem --> Mac Pro on Ethernet 01.
Inet Sharing on Mac Pro via build-in airport card == Wifi, works.
Inet Sharing on Mac Pro via Ethernet 02 --> AEBS WAN Port == Wifi & cabled connections do not work.
How can I get my AEBS to accept this shared connection, using this shared connection as the source for the internet that is being shared from the AEBS to both, Wifi and Cable, connected clients?
The reason for this setup is that normally my family has their own modem & isp which connects to the AEBS but the modem has broken and it will be a week until the replacement arrives so I need to share my connection with them until then.
The distance between my shared wifi and their AEBS is too far, which is why only having the working wifi is not good enough.
Any help would be much appreciated as I have spend the last 2 hours trying all kinds of configurations to no avail.

I currenly have a DSL modem that is a router as well and is WiFi able.
This gives me one LAN with no subnets as there is no other routing device.
Previously I had DSL modem that did DHCP (Issued IPs) but did not do WiFi so I had a Wifi Router, which also did DHCP by default. This is two overlapping subnets (modem > Router > Computers(s) AND Router > Computer)
Because the WiFi router is effectively fairly dumb it passes on any routing info from the modem.
This means the computer(s) get two IPs although System Preferences > Network can only show one.
What I did was set the DSL Modem to not do DHCP.
The Router then needs the IP of the Modem (Gateway), the DNS servers, the Subnet Mask entered in the boxes that usually appear for Static Routing. You also need to tell the Router to use on IP that is in the range the Modem is using.
This stops the overlapping subnets and makes the LAN more Linear.
Modem > router followed by Router to Computers(s)
Now your Mac Pro is taking the place of a Router and arguably a WiFi Base Station.
Re 1)
If Internet Sharing is set to do Ethernet (from Modem to Mac Pro) to Wifi I can't see that it can be set to do Ethernet (1 as you call it) to Ethernet (2) to get to the Airport Base Station.
I take it the Airport Base Station cannot "See" the Mac Pro's Wifi ?
Ideally it should be set to Bridge (Off) Mode - Not doing DHCP) so that it extends the range of the Mac Pro's WiFi network.
Re 2)
If the Base Station was in Bridge Mode then all the other house's computers would get IPs from the Mac Pro's subnet.
If it is Sharing an IP then they get their own Subnet from the Base Station.
Depending on what range the Mac Pro Uses and the Base Station is set to, you may get conflicting IP addresses.
To a certain extent Subnets can be useful as long as they are separated properly and Linear.
Consider it this way.
The Postal Service uses House numbers and street names in overlapping subnets to deliver mail.
The White House (as computer) is in Washington (router) which is in the USA
Now think of a house on a corner plot. Before city planners or postal service gets their hands on it it possibly could be considered to be house 30 Main Street as well as house 1 Side Avenue. Technically a letter could be addressed to either 1, Side Ave or 30, Main Street, Imaginary Little Town.
On the other hand the upstairs of you house is part of that house (in the same LAN) However it can only be accessed by the stairs (Separate, linear Subnet).
Certain apps can deal with/ignore overlapping subnets but others need the set up to be more linear. (iChat and other IM apps are one sort)

Airport Extreme loses connection on applying security

I have just bought an Airport Extreme as my first step on my transition from PC to Mac but it's making me think twice!
I can connect to the AEx when i don't apply any security or devices. then as soon as i try to upgrade the security to WEP or WPA or any security combination my PC loses the connection with the error message "Airport utility was unable to find your base station after restarting".
I've tried everything I can think of including tens of Hard Resets trying different combinations of settings to no avail. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem, I've tried to configure with WPA and password, and the PC just won't recognize a valid connection, won't connect to the internet.
I have a perfect connection without security. Can someone help with configuration? My MacBook Pro recognized the network and can sign in without a problem. I just can't seem to get the PC to sign into the network.

Access airport extreme remotely - how do I?

Could somebody tell me if there is a way to access my airport extreme remotely over the internet. I know with netgear routers you can just tick a box to enable remote access but can't work out how I do this with the airport extreme. Anyone know?

I take it you know how to get your IP or dynamic DNS, so we'll skip that part.
In Airport Utility, be in Manual Setup. Under the Airport tab, on the Base Station page, click: Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port.
Then when you're away from home, you can point Airport Utility at your DynDNS name and it should work.

Airport Extreme 2009 Model - Firmware 7.4.2 Not Upgradeable

I am very disappointed that this model- A1143 - earlier 2009 model is not upgradeable to the latest firmware - 7.5.1
The behavior of this Apple Router is random dropped WiFi DHCP TCP/IP connections. I am currently overseas setting up a complete Apple architecture for my fiancee's network in the Caribbean and cannot easily provide tech support. This is not what I expect from a PREMIUM manufacture like Apple. The 7.5.1 update, according to the release notes, will correct the PPPoE issues.
The bottom line is that I will have a very critical eye on purchasing any non laptop/computer products from this manufacture.

Sorry, but as far as I know, the A1143 version of the AirPort Extreme cannot be upgraded to have the same functionality that the latest model has with a simple firmware update ... even if one was available. That is because there was more than just a firmware change to this model. Improvements would require hardware changes as well.

Airport Extreme/express how to extend network range

Can anyone guide me step by step through the process of using an Airport Express to extend an Airport Extreme bases wireless network. I think I have to use the WDS but I have no idea how to do it. A step by step manual will be very much appreciated.

Try the following as a guideline ...
802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) - WDS Setup
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBSn
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AEBSn that you will want to set up as the main base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the AEBSn, and choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window.
o Enter the base station password if necessary. If the base station is using the
default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID (MAC address) of the AX that you will want to connect to this base station.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX.
o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Enter the base station password, if necessary.
o Enter the same network password as the AEBSn, if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the AEBSn from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID (MAC address) of the AEBSn in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

I have installed an external hard drive on my AirPort Extreme. How do I access it and tranfer photos and file to it from my Mac.

How far is the range of the Airport Extreme and how much does it boost your Internet speed?

We have a D-link wireless router, and it's worked fine for us, and covers the area around our house easily, but we have lots of other property too, though. I was wondering, what is the range of the Airport Extreme? Besides that, I've seen some communities that say the Airport Extreme is much faster than other routers, but since we have 1 MB per second Internet speed, would that affect speed much? I also was thinking about getting it because we have a USB printer that we'd like to use with our macs, but it would have to be integrated to our network. Our current router has a USB port on the back, but to connect, you have to use Shareport utility, and even then, you can only connect 1 device at a time. It would be nice to be able to convert the USB signal to a network signal.

Airport Extreme 2011 vs Airport Extreme 2009

Hi,
I bought the 2009 version this past June, and I just noticed that Apple updated the Extreme to a newer version later that month. I'm kinda of bummed about that.
I subscribe to an internet speed which is suppose to max at 6 mbs. I currently get between 4 and 5 wired or not. I also get full bars (reception) on my devices. I'm wondering though if the new version could help my speeds? I hear it is much faster. I use my router to wirelessly stream to my iPad 2, Apple Tv 2, and iPhone 1st generation.
Also, I am planning to purchase one for my mother. She needs in to connect via ethernet to an eMac and wirelessly to her Roku 2 XS. She also gets the same internet speeds I do. Would you recommend this refurb http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC340LL/A?mco=MjEzNzE0NjA or the new one?
In summary, my two questions are:
1) Do you think the new version could help my speeds?

2wire wireless- Airport Extreme- ethernet connection to iMac - how?

I have AT+T's DSL router that has wireless capabilities (802.11g, not n). I'm trying to use the new (802.11n version, although I'm not using n for this obviously) airport extreme to extended my wireless network to give me a wired access point to my old iMac (no wireless card).
So far the best I can do is get the airport extreme on the wireless network with a green light, but I can't get a wireline connection to land on this network. I'd even be ok with the airport extreme was a router that made the wired ports on a different network that would then route out to the wireless network.
When I connect a wired device to the airport extreme, it comes up with a 169.254.94.121 address. The wireless network is 192.168.1.x. The airport extreme does get it's 192.168.1.68 address on the same network as the 2wire. I've even forced my iMac into having an 192.168.1.80 address, but it can't ping the airport extreme's 192.168.1.68 address, so obviously the airport extreme isn't behaving how I would like. I even fired up WireShark on the connection, but it looks like the airport extreme won't even talk to it in any way; I was hoping to find the IP address on the wired side of the AX.
Basically I'm trying to use the airport extreme completely backwards from the usual setup. Wireless to wired instead of wired to wireless.
Here's what I have:
Airport Extreme - Join a wireless network, security is WPA2, and it's on the network (as seen by 2wire)
Can I get the wired connections on the airport extreme to be an extension of the wireless network or even as another NAT routed connection?
DSL router (2wire) that sends wireless-> Airport Extreme (join a wireless network) -> wired connection to iMac.
Why am I doing this? No phone line connection even close to my iMac.

I had to jump straight into the manual configuration, but it does show Wireless mode: Join a wireless network. And the 2wire shows it as a device connected to that network.
Connect using: Wireless Network
Ok, I'm still a bit confused. On the AEBSn, the only options available for Connect Using (found on the Internet > Internet Connection tab) are: Ethernet or PPPoE; For Wireless Mode (found on the AirPort > Wireless tab) are: Create a wireless network, Participate in a WDS network, Extend a wireless network, or Off. Unlike the AirPort Express or Time Capsule, there should NOT be an option for "Join a wireless network."
So at this point I think it is extending my wireless network. I just can't figure out how to get the wired ethernet ports to be on that same network.
Regardless, when configuring for "Join a wireless network," the base station would join as a wireless client, not as a means to extend the wireless range of the exiting wireless network. Since this is not the way to set up a WDS, the Ethernet ports on the AEBSn would not be enabled for sharing Internet connectivity.
WDS is not an option as the 2wire router doesn't seem to be able to handle that.
Then it appears that there will not be an option to create a WDS no matter which vendor's router you try to configure the 2Wire to work with. Sorry!

How do i set up time capsule to work with airport extreme base to extend wireless network?

i have a airport extreme base, how do i set up a time machine to extend the wireless network i have with airport extreme? i have also 3 airport express's connected to the same network to extend my wifi all over my house. thanks in advance.

You can leave the Time Capsule connected by Ethernet from the Linksys and configure for a "roaming" network as mentioned previously.
To do this, open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Time Capsue to restart
Then power down the entire network
Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Power up the switch
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Now, your computer will automatically pick up a wireless signal from either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, whichever device is closer and providing the stronger signal.
