Airport Extreme (4th Generation)-

This Airport Extreme has been in use for about 16 months.  I started having constant intermittent problems with it, but the utility software wouldn't connect to the device for the purpose of troubleshooting.  So I have now reset the device to factory settings and uninstalled/reinstalled the software.
When I first open the utility software it says"Airport Utility found an Airport Extrene 802-11n (4th Generation) with default settings.", but when I hit continue in order to enter set up I get the following.  "An error ocurred while tryping to access the Apple wireless device.  Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -4"  This is the same error I was getting before I tried the resets.
I am hard wired to the device and have tried a couple different ports and cables.
Any ideas?

It's definately not a problem with the AirPort itself. I just starting playing around with a virtual machine of Windows Home Server 2011 (running on Parallels on my Mac mini.) I could of used Windows 7, but just happen to be exploring this product at this moment in time.
Like you none of my AirPorts (all running 7.6 firmware) showed up in the latest version (5.5.3) of the AirPort Utility when I ran it. It was a fresh install too. I tried a number of tricks that have been posted on the Internet: 1) Disabling the Windows Firewall, 2) Enabling/disabling IPv6 on the network card, 3) Verifying that the Windows Firewall had both AirPort and Bonjour ports enabled, & 4) Making sure that the AirPort and Windows used the same workgroup name.
None of these made any difference. However, when I went the Configure Other route, I can get in. Subsequent restarts of the AirPort Utility or restarting Windows did not correct the issue and I was forced to use Configure Other to access the AirPort. Not sure why this is happening as I have a number of other dedicated Windows PCs that can access my AirPort without having to go through this ritual.
I will continue to explore and if I come up with a solution, I will be sure to post it.

  • Unable to connect mac OS 10.4 with airport extreme 4th generation

I am setting up an old PowerBook G4 for my nephew. Running Mac OS 10.4.11. I am unable to get the PowerBook G4 to speak to my Airport Extreme 4th generation. Is this an incompatibility issue that cannot be fixed?

I guess it's time to go down to Starbucks and buy an overprised Latte
If the coffee place is running an "open" network that does not use wireless security, the G4 should connnect.
If the coffee place uses WEP 40 or WEP 128 encryption, then the G4 will likely connect as well.
My guess at this point would be that the AirPort Extreme is using WPA2 Security and the G4 operating system...or the wireless card in the G4.....will not support this level of security.
So, although the G4 might be able to handle OS X 10.5.7 or higher, the wireless card may still limit what you can do.
Things might be a whole lot easier....and a lot less expensive than a new wireless card.....if you try a USB wireless adapter on the G4.....assuming that the G4 supports a USB connnection.

  • Airport extreme 4th generation - self-assigned IP address

2 Airport extreme 4th generation with latest firmware. extented network in bridge mode.
After switching providers, I reset both my airports and set them up new accordingto manual.
Only some devices (less than 50!) at times can't get an IP address.
Error msg: Airport has a self-assigned IP address .......... and will not be able to connect to the internet.
My new provider told me it is an internal probem. Quote: This is an internal issue between your devices and your internal routers. we only gives an address to your router and it is your router that gives your devices an address.
My question is, which part of the manual settings in Airport Utility affect the distribution of internal IP addresses?
or how to change my set-up to avoid the problem I'm experiencing?
    thanks a lot.

When in brigde mode your provider has to supply at least one IP address for each devices you want to connect.
Alt. turn bridge mode off in Airport Utilities and let your Base station distribute IP addresses. For that you have to enter two DNS addresses.

  • Airport Extreme (4th generation) and "Wireless Client Mode"

    Hello All,
I am using  an Airport Extreme (4th generation) and I wonder why in "Wireless Client Mode" I am unable to connect my network using the Ethernet connection.
Basically, what I wish to do is a bridge between a Base Station Wireless N <--> Base Station Wireless N (Airport Extreme) distributing the connection via its integrated Ethernet ports.
    Thanks,
    Sebastian

I wonder why in "Wireless Client Mode" I am unable to connect my network using the Ethernet connection.
The Ethernet ports are not enabled if you configure the AirPort Extreme to "Join a wireless network". Oddly, the USB port is enabled.
If you have another Apple "n" wireless router as your main base station, you could configure the AirPort Extreme to "Extend a wireless network". This would provide more wireless coverage and enable the Ethernet ports on the device.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express 802.11n will do what you want.
When the Express is is manually configured to "Join a wireless network", there is a special feature  to "Enable Ethernet clients", which will activate the Ethernet port.

  • AppleCare Warranty for Airport Extreme (4th Generation - MC340LL/A)

I have a 4th Generation (MC340LL/A) Airport Extreme that comes on, but doesn't seem to want to connect to the internet.  I know that AppleCare covers items such as this if it was purchased up to 2 years before the purchase of a device such as MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.  I brought my MacBook Pro in March of 2011 (Mid 2010) and the warranty exprires in March of 2012 for the MacBook Pro.
Has anyone been successful getting their Airport Extreme replaced at the store, or did they require you to send it in?    Am I wrong in thinking that the Airport Extreme would be covered under these circumstances?  The Airport Extreme 4th Generation was released in October 2009, so that is definitely in the time frame of two years before the purchase of my MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

For now, the nearest available information may not be fully suggestive of
the possible largest or unofficially supported external HDD it may use...
Since a similar-spec Time Capsule has the option for either a 2TB or 3TB
internal HDD as part of that configuration, the safe bet suggests 3TB.
There may be an issue with larger drives and multiple computers using
one large drive, since I'd seen some mention of a few user problems when
two or more Macs were sharing Time Machine storage on one larger HDD.
And someone may know of the information about a software utility that may
be able to help keep track of the files or organize them, in such a situation.
In passing, some weeks ago, I'd read about such a utility to help alleviate an
issue that may result from two or more Macs with Time Machine files on the
same backup hard disk drive. But did not keep the link nor retain those details.
If you did get a larger external hard disk drive of sufficient spin rate RPM
and cache size, then it may be a simple matter to format it with partitions
so extra space may be in reserve or any capacity unable to work with
the total configuration could be used for general storage, apart from TM.
Hopefully there is a good drive available for that application.
I'd inquire of OWC as they have some examples of hardware.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Reason: Airport Utility cannot find my Airport Extreme (4th generation) wirelessly on my Time Capsule configured network even although the firmware in both units is up to date.

I thought you were trying to Extend the network with an Express as the article mentions you pointed to...
You can't find the Airport Extreme then...
I woudl suggest doing a Factory reset....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Then you should be able to set it up just as you did when it was new....
Factory default reset (using reset button)
If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.

  • Airport Extreme 4th Generation Freezes/Crashes - dropped connection

    Hi
I have an Airport Extreme (4th Gen) Base Station which has started to freeze/crash. It will work fine for a while and then it will dissapear as an available network to connect to, this is via both Wireless and a LAN connection (MacBook Pro and iPhones and iPad connect wireless and Mac Mini is connected via LAN) The Green light is still on but airport utility reports that there is no available basestation unless I pull the plug on the base station and let it reset.
I had been running firmware 7.6 and had tried downgrading to 7.5.2 but that made no difference and I am still getting the problem.
I have also reset the base station to default settings and set up again which has also not helped.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas on how I can resolve this as loosing my network every 30 mins - 1 hour is a little annoying
    Thanks
    Justin

I am having the same probably.  Just starting to do this 2 days ago.  Not sure if that is related to the new airport utility or the new firmware.
I am curious if you are having any luck fixing it?  If so, please share some hints.
    Thanks

  • I am trying to decide to buy Airport extreme  4th generation used for $90 or buy a new 5TH generation for $180.  What is the difference in 4th to 5th.generation.  Thanks   John

I am trying to decide to buy a used 4th generation Airport Extreme or a new 5th generatino for $190. What is th edifference betweeen 4th and 5th generation,  thanks    John

"New and improved" antenna design on the 5th Generation that may or may not result in any real differences. I can't tell them apart specification or performance wise.
$90 is not bad for the 4th Generation, but you have No Warranty.
Apple sells re-furbished 4th Gneration models that look brand new with all accessories and New Warranty for $129. Check the online Store if you are interested.

  • Max Hard Drive Size for Airport Extreme 4th Generation (A1354)?

    I've got a 4th gen Airport Extreme (A1354) (MC340LL/A).
Currently I'm using a 2TB Western Digital USB2 hard drive connected externally.
I'd like to add a larger capacity hard drive so that I can back up more computers. What's the maximum HD size and configuration I can add to this Airport?

  • Extend 5 GHZ network with airport extreme 5th generation

I'm having issues extending a 5 ghz network with an airport extreme 5th generation.  Here is what I have -
1 brand new airport extreme (2013) in the basement connected to the cable modem. It nearly doubled the speed I was getting over the 5th gen.
I moved the 5th generation airport extreme up to the office on the first floor. Due to the construction of the house and a mess that previous owners made with the wiring, it's cheaper for me to have multiple devices extend the network to various parts of the house than it is to tear open the walls and try to fix the coax issue. I have a 4th gen and a 2nd gen, as well as a few airport express models. So, the 4th gen extends the 5 ghz network without a problem. I use the 2nd gen to provide 802.11g (2.4 ghz)  to some older devices that can't handle 802.11n. Both work fine. When I moved the 5th gen upstairs to extend the 5ghz network in the office it won't do it.
I did a factory reset on it, Set it up with a new device name, and set it to extend the 2.4 ghz network, and it works without a problem. If I change it to extend the 5 ghz network, it restarts and then flashes amber. The airport utility can no longer see it and I have to do a factory rest in order to get it working again. I downgraded the firmware, but that made no difference.
Any idea why the 4th gen works for this, but the 5th gen fails ?

At times, a Hard Reset will not completely clear all of the old settings when you reset the device, and as a result, you do not start from a true factory default.
If you have not already done so, try a Factory Default Reset this way.....
    Power off the AirPort Extreme
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Not sure what else to suggest, other than taking the device to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

  • HT1998 I have what I believe, though I am not certain, an Airport Extreme 1st generation. My internet speeds on my hardwired pc are running in half and a bit higher on my Mac Pro. Cable claims it is a problem with the router since I can bring the PC speed

Bear with me please as I have never used the community before. I have an Airport Extreme 1st generation at least I think it is a 1st generation. My PC is hardwired and my Mac Pro, obviously wireless. I have 50/8 mbps service but the speeds on my PC run around 20/8 and 30/8 on the Mac. Cable says it is a problem with the airport since my PC speeds rise to 50 when the airport is disconnected. Does anyone know what to do?

The simplest way would be to perform a "soft" reset on the AEBS. This type of reset will temporarily disable all of the AEBS's passwords up to five minutes. This should give you ample time to access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility to change it.
If you don't want to actually change the password, then you can possibly retrieve the password from the OS X Keychain, as follows:
Run the Keychain Access utility found in \Applications\Utilities
In the category column (on the left side of the utilities' window), select "All Items."
In the right column look for your Network Name. It will have a "Kind" of "AirPort network password."
Double-click on your network name listing.
    Click on "Show password."
    Enter your Mac's administrator's password
Your wireless network's password should now be displayed.

  • Why can't I connect to my airport extreme(4th gen.) after reseting the password

i was changing the password on my airport extreme(4th gen.) and it said that i changed it succesfully but it had a error when it was restarting and i can't connect back to the internet what should it do

Please perform a Factory Default Reset to clear the old, and possibly corrupted settings on the AirPort Extreme to get it back to original settings. Then, reconfigure the device again using the passwords of your choice.

  • What/any new features in AirPort Extreme 5th Generation?

Apple Support has deleted tech specs for 2G & 4G AirPort Extremes, so it's difficult to compare those previous gens to the latest. Can anybody comment on what/any new features are in AirPort Extreme 5th Generation?

FCC filings indicate a more powerful signal coming out of it, and different radio positioning.  Longer range, and probably more even distribution of signal.

  • Best setup for new airport with wired connection to old airport extreme (4th gen)

I have an AirPort Extreme (4th gen) in my basement (of a three story house) connected directly to the Fios box (I am not using the Verizon g router).  The new AirPort (ac) is connected to the old one by in-wall Cat 6e to an upstairs bedroom.  Can/should I turn off wifi on the n router for best wireless performance?  What would the optimal setup be?
On the airport utility I selected "replace existing Airport" and the new ac router is up and running and working fine.  I wonder whether the fact that wifi on the old Airport is still on may be good for coverage around the house, but compromising the wireless bandwidth/speed?  I haven't noticed any speed issues yet, but I do a lot of video streaming so I want to ensure I have the best setup.  Range doesn't seem to be a major issue in my house.  It is more important to me to have strong wifi signal upstairs.
    Thanks in advance for advice.

If the AirPorts are connected using Ethernet, then no bandwidth is being lost on the network. Keep the wireless functions "on" at both AirPorts for additional wireless coverage and speed.

  • I can't update airport extreme 1st generation

I can't get my airport extreme 1st generation updated. When I open AirPort Utility on my macbook with maverick it ties to configure the new AirPort but says: This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. I am currently using wifi on a netgear router. I first unpluged the cable from that router and plugged in the AirPort and tried to set it up. Then I unplugged everything and plugged it back in. I just keep getting the same outcome. I am no longer trying to connect to the network but get it updated for use. Is there a solution to this issue?

You need to use....or borrow for a few minutes....a Mac running the Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) operating system to update the the firmware on the 1st Gen AirPort Extreme.
Once the device is updated to at least firmware version 7.5.2, you will be able to use AirPort Utility in Mavericks to administer and update the AirPort to higher versions of firmware if you wish.
