AirPort Extreme 802.11n (4th Generation) no longer recognized by iPhone 4S

I'm a new community member so please forgive me if this question has been asked and answered and I didn't see it. DirectTV came to troubleshoot a DVR cinema connection device that had been wirelessly connected to my AirPort Extreme without incident since the DirectTV device was installed 6 months ago but stopped talking to the AirPort last week. The DirectTV technician asked me to unplug then plug back in the AirPort. Now, my iPhone 4S will no longer recognize the AirPort. The AirPort is not recognized in the AirPort Utility on my iPhone, but if I run the AirPort Utility on my iPad 2, it is found. I can see the AirPort on my wifi settings on my phone but I can no longer connect to the network. The iPad and my wife's iPhone 5 connects to wifi just fine. Also a windows 8 laptop which was previously able to connect to the AirPort can no longer connect. And, of course, the DirectTV device still will not connect. I am stumped. Please help. Thanks.

OK, two possible leads:
1) Using the AirPort Utility, I disabled 802.11n, setting the AirPort Extreme to b/g only. This seemed to help— I didn't fall off the network all afternoon. (Setting it to 'n' only did not work, unfortunately, or else that would have been better, since it would have let me take advantage of the faster speeds for Time Machine to the shared disk)
2) Soon thereafter, for seemingly independent reasons, we starting having trouble with our DSL connection. We reset the AEBS to factor settings, which didn't solve the DSL problem (had to get a Windstream technician out for that), but since that reset, I've been connected with 802.11a and the MBP hasn't fallen off the wireless network once.
We'll see how it holds up, but for now, the recommendation seems to be first to reset the AEBS settings to factory default, and then try disabling 802.11n...

GRRRRRRRRR— I feel like this is a version of a problem I see repeated here endlessly, but none of the threads I see about it is quite the same, or fixes my problem.      We have a network with:
Airport Extreme 802.11n (4th generation), connected to DSL modem. Firmware 7.5.2
MBP 2006, running OS 10.6.7 ****
MBP 2008, running OS 10.5.x
ipads, iphone, shared printer, drive, etc.
Everything works fine EXCEPT the MBP 2006. It connects to the network, works for a while, and then after a certain amount of time (anywhere between a minute and several hours) it's dropped. The menu bar still shows a connection and full signal, but there's no connection (TCP or afp) and when I launch the Aiport Utility, it just says that no base stations can be found.   The menu bar seems to be lying. Using the menu to turn Airport off and back on (or sleeping the laptop) works to reestablish the connection.
I do not have this problem with the MBP 2006 on other wireless networks (at work, or at my other home in another city). Just with the Airport Extreme
I've tried changing the channels, disabling IPv6 on the laptop and on the Airport Extreme, setting up a manual DHCP address, and changing the setting for "radio mode" of the base station from Automatic to 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n.   I also read that there might be troubles with "mixed" networks with both 802.11g and 802.11n, so I upgraded the Airport card in my MBP 2006 to an AirPort Extreme 802.11 a/b/g/n, which made disk sharing much faster when it's working, but didn't put an end to the cut-outs
Hjalp? Why does the Airport Extreme keep dropping my MBP 2006 (or vice versa)? Are there other things I should be changing or disabling?

You may want to try reinstalling Mavericks. Airport Utility installed by Mavericks may no longer connect to your older AEBS (though I've not heard that.) Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
     after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
     Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
     Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
     Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from

USB Printing AirPort Extreme 802.11n

I've upgraded to the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station and am having troubles printing to printers that worked fine with my previous AirPort Extreme 802.11g base station.
Both USB printers are detectable for set-up in the Print & Fax Preference tab and can be printed to when hooked directly to my computer. They are also detectable for set-up in the Print & Fax Preference tab when hooked via the base station.
So, all set-up and settings are fine. The issue I am having which never occurred before is that the file is sent to the queue but is immediately labeled as stopped and will not print no matter what I try.
I've configured, reconfigured, reset,you name it but with no luck.
does anyone have any answers out there. Please help...

I have had the same issue repeatedly after upgrading to Leopard. I can no longer use my printer (Brother HL-2070N the "network ready one") with my airport extreme router. It used to show up before I updated to 10.5.2, now I can't even get it to show up at all. I reset the base station, unplugged, and then re-plugged in the printer, nothing worked. Then I tried to just delete it from my list of printers and re-add it, but now my computer can't find it! I didn't change anything on my network at all, and I had literally printed something just 10 minutes before I applied the update. Very frustrating for a $180 router.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n (2nd Gen) no Guest Network capability?

I have an "AirPort Extreme 802.11n (2nd Gen)" according to a serial number lookup here.
I am not sure if this is the same as MB053LL/A which is mentioned is this archived thread. (Couldn't find a way to lookup the part number + couldn't find the tech specs at apple.com.)
I was wondering if this base station has the capability to setup a guest network in addition to the primary network.
According to the above mentioned Apple Discussions thread, the base station needs to have simultaneous dual band operation capability to make this possible. (Since I couldn't find the tech specs, I'm not sure what this base station has.)
I would assume from this Knowledge Base Article that the 2nd generation AirPort Extreme is one generation too old:

AirPort Extreme 802.11n and PowerBooks?

I am about 1.5 seconds away from buying one of the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base stations to work with my AirPort Express but I have some questions / concerns.
1) Is my Powerbook capable of being enabled to access an "n based network" or is my money wasted on a router capable of speeds my computer can not access?
2) Should my computer be capable of accessing this network, is the Airport Express Base Station I have capable of acting on this network in "N speed" too? I know the base station can be configured to act essentially as a relay to boost signal strength...if set up to do so will it dumb the speed down to "G speed"?
3) If 1 and 2 are true and the express base station dumbs the speed of the N router down, can I configure the airport express base station to ONLY act as a wireless conection to my stereo and not as a wireless router, so as to allow my Powerbook to access the "N" speed network but still broadcast my music wirelessly to the stereo?

Hey for any one still lookin....
1. It all depends on what your CARD is capable of. Your POWERBOOK is more then capable of "N" speeds. Your only limited on the bandwidth of the Cardbus slot. You would have to have a third party card to access the new "N" speeds tho. I'm not sure if the last batch of (pre MacBooks) Powerbooks even made it to the "G" standard. I know Apple just came out with a driver for the latest Macs that have an upgradeable Card and or Basestation to get to "N". I really don't think your Express is upgradeable.
2. You need to look at what models you have to figure out what their capable of. You should be able to go to Apple's web site to find out. Usually the Router will Dumb it down to the SLOWEST speed. Unless you were streaming your music, and playing a game online, and transferring a large file you shouldn't have a problem anyway. As long as you are not using the slowest product it won't dumb down.
3. Haven't got that far yet. I've used up all my brain cells getting this far, so good luck on your mission. Try starting another string with specifics on what you want to do.

Trouble installing new AirPort Extreme (802.11n)

I just purchased the AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. When I first turned on the AirPort Extreme base station the AirPort Utility program on my Mac recognized it immediately. I followed the instructions to configure it and everything seemed to be OK (green light is glowing on the base station). That said, now my Mac (AirPort Utility) no longer recognizes the base station. Any ideas what could be causing this problem or where I can go for help?

Did this problem with Airport Utility not "seeing" your base station happen immediately after configuring the device? Or has everything been working fine for days or months, and you noticed just now that the Airport Utility cannot see the base station.
Also - are you absolutely certain your Mac is wirelessly connected to your base station, and not the unsecured wireless network of one of your neighbors?

Any solutions? I just got my 5th generation Airport Extreme, set it up on my MacBook (OS X.5.8), and my PPC iMac (OSX.4.9) is having Kernal panic attacks whenever I try & join the new network. I;m now back on my old Airport settings and it doesn;t crash. Clearly it's the new Airport.

New Airport Extreme (802.11n): : Port Mapping... ***???

There are two different programs I was formerly using, whereby (after following instructions) I was able to create a static IP address for every machine on my network, plus open ports 8000 and 9990-9998 respectively. But ever since upgrading to the new Airport Extreme (802.11n), it completely stopped working. To boot, I've upgraded to Leopard on one of two of the machines (the other is still using 10.3.9).
I haven't been able to figure out for the life of me, how to configure it. It's no longer as obvious where and what information to put in. All guides that would remotely help are designed for the older Airport unit, which has completely different menus in the Airport Utility.
Is there anyone out there who has experience with Dot-Tunes and/or Nicecast or similar port mapping, who has the patience to describe, in layman's terms, what steps to take to get this set up correctly again, starting with how to reassign static IPs for my machines. I will not ask a lot of questions and take up too much more of your time. I'm just frustrated after a whole day of trying to figure this out and fruitless Google and forum searches.

I'm not familiar with either Dot-Tunes or Nicecast, but the following would be the general port mapping procedure with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) using the AirPort Utility. Note in this procedure you will not need to assign a static IP address for each of your host devices. Instead you will be taking advantage of the AEBSn's DHCP reservations feature.
To setup port mapping on an AEBSn, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
o Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
o Click "Continue"

WMM for AirPort Extreme (802.11n) - UMA T-Mobile not working...

Is there any chance we'll see WMM (WiFi Multi-Media) in a firmware upgrade anytime soon? I noticed that according to the WiFi Alliance's website, when the AirPort Extreme was certified, it supported WMM!

As an early adopter, I just got a BlackBerry 8320 from T-Mobile, which does UMA, so you can use the phone over WiFi. Works awesome with wireless routers that do WMM, basically doesn't work with my AirPort Extreme... As you might imagine, this is quite frustrating, as I have particular desire to have two APs, for basically no reason!

i am a die-hard apple user- heck, even a long-time stockholder- and recently
bought an airport extreme (802.11n) router for my house. it worked
flawlessly and i thought it was the best thing since sliced bread... well,
until i picked up a UMA phone from T-Mobile.
UMA is a service that routes your calls over WiFi. for some reason the UMA
service worked everywhere except over my Airport Extreme base station. as a
surprise, it even worked over my neighbour's older Airport Extreme (802.11g)
connection.
i swapped base stations (ie, brought his base station to my house, connected
it to my network) and it worked. so, it is an issue that is clearly
isolated to the new 802.11n base stations.
thinking it was only me with this issue, i dug around the internet and found
this discussion:

obviously there's no resolution and people are getting quite peeved that a

Airport Snow vs. Airport Extreme 802.11n

I've been using my Airport Snow for a year or two now and it's been performing very well. I connected it directly to my Comcast cable modem so it distributes IPs to my local network.
I decided to buy the new Airport Extreme because I now have a new white MacBook Core 2 Duo which has been upgraded for 802.11n.
I replaced my Airport Snow with the Airport Extreme 802.11n and put the Airport Snow aside and powered off.
All of my network works just fine and Internet access is in full operation and functional.
However, the Internet performance is abysmal using this new Airport Extreme. My wife who uses an original MacBook Core Duo wirelessly has noticed a dramatic decrease in web pages starting to load and final loading seems agonizingly slow with a long delay right at the end. On my computer I've noticed the same performance issue and it's connected to my LAN and not wirelessly.
Having used the Airport Snow for maybe two years both my wife and I have a strong feel for performance expectations and with the transition from Airport Snow to Airport Extreme 802.11n there's is a noticeable and disappointing performance degrade.
I've checked everything wrt to the Airport Extreme 802.11n configuration and as far as I can tell I've done everything correctly, plus every thing is functional as it should be.
One other thing to mention while I'm at it. The new Airport Extreme has two additional LAN ports. One would think that plugging any one of my LAN ethernet lines connect to my PM G5 into one of these would provide a like performance or even better performance vs. being plugged into an ethernet switch. BUT alas, this is not so - in fact the performance is quite a bit worse.
All of this has me quite worried thinking that I've bought into an inferior wireless solution compared to my Airport Snow device.
Have others experience anything similar to what I've described here ?

BTW - I really like the shared USB drive feature offered by the new Airport Extreme 802.11n. Having a device such as this allows my wife and I to share a storage space very easily with out portable MacBooks around the house.

The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile.

This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).
*Settings I have Enabled*
5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.

Not able to see disk connected to AirPort Extreme 802.11n

I just installed my AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wireless Base station. Wireless internet works like a charm, however, I cannot see my external hard disk when it is connected to the base station (amber light blinking and when checking the problem, I am told that "Disk needs repair"). When connecting the hard disk directly to the PC, I have no problem seeing the data. Any tips or tricks out there... ?

I finally got my 500 GB Western Digital MyBook USB drive to work by reformatting it to HFS+ format.
Of course, before I could do that, I had to copy all my files onto another hard drive. That job took a day to accomplish.
I work with Poser, and have a lot of content installed... We're talking thousands of files.
Once the drive was reformatted to HFS+ format, I copied everything back over. That took another day. Then I connected to the AEBS.
The USB drive was immediately recognized. It was incredibly easy to access the USB drive on my PCs. It required no effort on my part, except to supply the password.
In the end, I've decided this effort is a failure.
The drive is way too slow for my needs. Also, one of my vital Poser utilities (CorrectReference Pro) will not work properly with the USB drive on the AEBS.
I am currently in the process of copying all those files over to two external USB hard drives attached to my other PC.
Then I plan to unmount my 500 GB MyBook drive, and reformat it back to NTFS. I'll let the Notebook PC have it on a direct connection again.
I have a couple "junk" External Hard drives that are 160 GB. Maybe I'll use one of those as an Airport disk...
But I won't be using the Airport disk for anything important. It's too slow.
