AirPort Extreme 802.11n as a wireless router and local network switch?

Good afternoon,
I'm curious if its possible to have the APE in wireless network mode and connect systems via hard line as well?
I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n set to "Create a Wireless Network" mode that is attached directly to a cable modem for internet connectevity. My issue is that while all wireless devices (several iPods, two iPhones and three laptop computers) connect to the APE without issue (and have internet access), when I try to plug in a Windows 7 desktop computer via one of the ethernet jacks, Windows is unable to connect and shows the network as "unidentified," spitting back a private IP address as opposed to a local LAN (this behavior repeats for an Ubuntu Linux box as well).
Not sure if the APE is misconfigured, this is a Windows 7 issue or if its improper use on my part (though this also precludes me from connecting a gigabit switch to the APE).

Properly configured, the AirPort should provide both wired and wireless network client with Internet access.
At this point, I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

Using Airport Extreme (802.11n) with Netgear Wireless Modem Router

I have a quick question, can I use the Airport Extreme in a wireless modem router?(http://www.netgear.co.uk/wirelessadslrouterdg834g.php)
By plugging the Airport into the Netgear router would I be able to by pass and run a network this way. I have a 802.11n enabled MacBook and Apple TV, the Netgear is the weakest link!!!

neptune2000's post was implying that you connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the Netgear.
The AEBS does NOT contain a modem. Therefore you will need a modem, either the Netgear or another.

Airport Extreme (802.11n) - Unable to wirelessly print

I have an airport extreme and have been printing wirelessly (Canon MP510) from my iMac and Macbook since I purchased the AE a little over a month ago. Suddenly I can no longer print from either computer. The only thing I've done differently is to use the printer to make some copies. I don't know if this use has messed something up. The printer shows up as the default printer, but when I call up the info on the printer when it should be printing, it shows that the printer is searching for signal. Hope someone can help.

I was able to get the printer to print again after unplugging the AE and leaving it off for a minute, then replugging. Printer works again, YEAH!!!

Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station and Connecting to VPN Client

I am networked beautifully with my new Airport Extreme Base Station and get out to the Internet in seconds. However, when I try to connect remotely to my company's VPN Client, I am unsuccessful in logging on to the Company's network. The error message I get is that the VPN Client has timed out. Then I am given the opportunity to attempt to logon to a second server. I am unsuccessful with the alternative server as well. I have worked with my company's tech support and after quite a bit of troubleshooting, I was told that it is a port configuration problem on the Airport Extreme Base Station. Has anyone else experienced this problem and been able to resolve this issue? What did you do? Help--I don't want to go back to my Netgear network. The Airport Extreme is so extremely faster--I can't go back!

I have their ip address and it does not appear to be the problem. I did speak to apple support and was told to get the port numbers of the vpn and enter those along with the mac address of the one laptop I needed to communicate with the vpn Nortel Client. No success with that. So, I tried tieing that one laptop to the network with the router that worked fine with being recognized by Nortel while I continued to select the apple network for my 3 other macs. I was finally able (with extreme) get to my upstairs and connect to the net on all of the macs but now I lost connectivity with even the net on the netgear router. So, I continue--not wanting to have to go back to the basement to work on the pc laptop. Thanks for your reply.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler not working

Hello, I just installed the Time Capsule software onto my 1st gen MacBook. I saw that it installed the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler, but after looking at the network utility. All that show up is: Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g), it does not give the little 'n.' I ran the installer twice, but no joy. Any help would be great!

Go to the Apple menu and select about this Mac. Does it say "Intel Core Duo" or "Intel Core 2 Duo"?
Only the Macs with "Intel Core 2 Duo" processors have the 802.11n hardware. If you Mac book has the "Intel Core Duo" processor the enabler is useless.

How to install AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler?

I just bought the Airport Extreme and I have the CD that came with it loaded. I'm installing the package that is on the CD and it reads that the following items are available for installation and one of them is the Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler. I "continue" and it only allows me to do a basic upgrade. How do I know that the Enabler was correctly installed and I can now access using 802.11n?

Steve, fire up your Network Utility. You can find it in your Utilities folder. From the row of tabs across the top of the window select "Info" - the first option on the left. Nxt select the "network interface for information". You'll be wanting "(en1)". At the bottom of the info you'll see an entry for "Model Wireless Network Adapter". In parenthesis under this title will be "802.11" and some letters. If you see a letter "n" then it means the enabler did its thang!
To actually select how your computer will communicate with that little white box with the green light on the front (um...it is green, isn't it?) then fire up your Airport Utility. Select "Manual" setup. Make sure you have the Airport icon highlighted at the top of the window then select the "Wireless" tab. The "Radio Mode" entry is where you do your bit to select "g", "n" or whatever in 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
I find it best to do one thing at a time. Slower but at least I can undo the mess easily.

SERIOUSLY slow USB hard drive on the new Airport Extreme 802.11n

I have recently bought the new airport etreme 802.11n. Great little device, look wonderful on the office desk. I had some troubles getting it up and running on my machine but finaly got there in the end.
The USB hard drive is a great little addition that I was very excited about, untill I got it running. It is amazingly slow, for example I tried to copy a folder that contained 15 files which amounted to 135.6mb and it took 20 mins and 24 seconds to upload!
Is this just the speed that it should be uploading or is there somehting wrong with my settings.
I'm running on 3 bars of signal and the settings I'm using are:
connect with password (which is the same as the base stations password)
Automatically discover disks
Show in menu bar
If anyone knows the technical data for the transfer speeds and can confirm my queries I'd really appreciate it!

You can connect USB-based storage devices to an AirPort Extreme (802.11n). Learn which formats and protocols are supported.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) supports USB storage devices that have a block size of 512 bytes, and are formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS-plus), FAT16, or FAT32. Not all USB storage devices use a block size of 512 bytes.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) shares storage devices based on the format used to initialize the storage device. For example, if HFS-plus formatting was used, AFP and SMB/CIFS protocols are used to share the device on the network. If FAT16 or FAT32 was used, SMB/CIFS protocols are used.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) works with disks that have a single partition and are not RAID volumes (no more than one volume per physical disk).
Note: Use AirPort Disk Utility to discover and mount AirPort Extreme-based volumes over the network.

Airport Express and Airport Extreme 802.11n

I have a Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station set up and a old Airport Extreme (the one before the 802.11n model) set up which extends the Base Station's signal.
Is the old Airport Express broadcasting the 802.11n put out by the Airport Extreme even though the Express is an older model?

No, the older AX (Airport Express) is not capable of communicating in 802.11n protocol. It would be 802.11g at best.

This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).
*Settings I have Enabled*
5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n no route to host

Hi, I have a AirPort Extreme 802.11n router with the latest firmware installed. My setup is such that my laptop is connected to the router via ethernet and my iPhone is connected via wifi, both using the same subnet, router address and dns address. The problem I'm having is that while my laptop is connected via ethernet it can ping and access file sharing services on my iPhone, but when my laptop is connected via wifi the iPhone is not reachable and pings return a "no route to host". I've looked at the traffic via wireshark and the only thing I see when trying to do direct wifi to wifi communications is that the arp request for the identity of the iPhone's IP is never answered. Is this a limitation of the airport extreme base station or is there a setting somewhere I need to change in order for wifi to wifi communication to work? Also note that the same problem was experienced with another laptop also running Leopard and connected to the network via wifi (both running 10.5.5) so this is not a local problem with my laptop software environment. The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
As you can see it's quite versatile.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n and PowerBooks?

I am about 1.5 seconds away from buying one of the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base stations to work with my AirPort Express but I have some questions / concerns.
1) Is my Powerbook capable of being enabled to access an "n based network" or is my money wasted on a router capable of speeds my computer can not access?
2) Should my computer be capable of accessing this network, is the Airport Express Base Station I have capable of acting on this network in "N speed" too? I know the base station can be configured to act essentially as a relay to boost signal strength...if set up to do so will it dumb the speed down to "G speed"?
3) If 1 and 2 are true and the express base station dumbs the speed of the N router down, can I configure the airport express base station to ONLY act as a wireless conection to my stereo and not as a wireless router, so as to allow my Powerbook to access the "N" speed network but still broadcast my music wirelessly to the stereo?

Hey for any one still lookin....
1. It all depends on what your CARD is capable of. Your POWERBOOK is more then capable of "N" speeds. Your only limited on the bandwidth of the Cardbus slot. You would have to have a third party card to access the new "N" speeds tho. I'm not sure if the last batch of (pre MacBooks) Powerbooks even made it to the "G" standard. I know Apple just came out with a driver for the latest Macs that have an upgradeable Card and or Basestation to get to "N". I really don't think your Express is upgradeable.
2. You need to look at what models you have to figure out what their capable of. You should be able to go to Apple's web site to find out. Usually the Router will Dumb it down to the SLOWEST speed. Unless you were streaming your music, and playing a game online, and transferring a large file you shouldn't have a problem anyway. As long as you are not using the slowest product it won't dumb down.
3. Haven't got that far yet. I've used up all my brain cells getting this far, so good luck on your mission. Try starting another string with specifics on what you want to do.

I now have 802.11g airport router and wish to up grade to n. I have a new Macbook Pro and MacBook Air with n capability. Also have a wireless printer, air express and a wi-fi sony blue ray player. Am I going to have problems switching all these over?

In addition to Bob's remarks:
If it works now on your "g" network, it will work on the new one. But: you don't want the down compatibility from n to g.
Especially if you have the new Extreme with the 2 bands (2.4 and 5GHZ): the 5GHz band, although a somewhat lower sending power/reach is MUCH faster.
Like Bob said (he is the WIFI master) the printer and bluray player may have their own "specialty" behaviour.
The printer probably will not give a problem if you do not use its own wireless but connect it to the extreme with usb cable.
The bluray player I don't know, you should try it connected to the extreme.
Unlikely that, when connected directly, they will give problems.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n 4% Packet Loss

I have three laptops (Macbook, HP, and ThinkPad), an iPhone 4, iPad, and a Wii on my wireless network. I replaced an old Linksys 802.11g access point and router with a new Airport Extreme 802.11n.
Everything has been working fairly good except my ThinkPad. The TP has a ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III card and can connect to everything from coffee shop wireless to my Cisco WLAN using PEAP/WPA2 at work without skipping a beat.
But here at home, with my new Airport - I'm losing about 4% of the pings I run and it'll drop my connection without warning. Almost like the WPA key is rotating, then just dies.
The MacBook has an 802.11n card and can run extended ping tests without dropping a single one.
The HP has an Intel centrino abg card and runs 0% loss as well.
If I connect my old Linksys back up - I get 0% packet loss on WPA2 again, but to the AirPort - 4%.
It's making my wireless network exceptionally frustrating.

This is what I get when I'm connected to the main wireless network using 802.11g WPA2 (AES or TKIP).
If you'd like to do this test, simply type this command from a command line (or terminal on an OS X computer)

Not a single drop... and I'm still pinging the AirPort's IP address, so I know it's not the device itself dropping pings. It must be something funky with my T400's wireless card and the private network, nothing else makes sense.
