AirPort Extreme 802.11n for older Macs?

Are there any plans for Apple to release some sort of upgrade for older Macs so that we can use 802.11n wireless networking?
I have a Power Mac G5 (2.5GHz DP) and a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), so the hardware in my Macs doesn't handle the 802.11n specification. (Please note that I'm not talking about the software enabler. That's not going to work on older hardware.)
Are there plans for new AE cards that can be swapped into the G5s or an ExpressCard 34 card for the laptop?
(And why oh why does the UK government not allow wide channel? UK consumers are stuck with only a 2.5x speed increase, whereas US consumers get the full 5x speed increase.)

802.11n refers to a speedy wireless connection. When

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way.

Set up of Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi / Mac OS 10.6.7

I am trying to set up an Airport Extreme (and I have done this MANY times before) but it get a warning dialog that the the Airport doesn't have a valid IP Address and the Yellow warning light is showing. What is strange is that I have connected a Cisco E2000 wireless to the same modem and it's working perfectly - out of the box. I have tried two different Airport Extreme's and the same is happening on both of them. I've never had this issue before so I am at a loss.

Have you performed a complete modem reset and power cycle of the network?
Push the reset button on the modem (if present) and power it off
Pull the battery from the modem if it is easily accessible
Power down everything else on the network, order is not important
Wait 30 minutes (some service providers will take longer for their equipment to reset back at the main office), so allow 60 minutes if you can.
Install the battery back in the modem if needed and make sure you have a good ethernet cable connected from the modem to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the modem first and let it run for a few moments by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme the same way
Power up other network devices the same way
Check to see if you can configure the AirPort Extreme

Airport Extreme 802.11n Speed

Hello Everyone,
I am planing to buy an Airport Extreme 802.11n for my iMac Core Duo at home, I am trying to find out if this upgrade will benefit the speed of wireless connection, as I am using actiontech DSL modem which was provided by the ISP. I have to reset the current DSL Modem every other day to keep the consistant speed. Please enlighten me with your wisdoms.

As far as resetting your modem, that is an issue with the DSL modem and your ISP. The router may help only if you have your computer directly connected to the modem, as it will prevent you from losing your connection to your isp when your Mac goes to sleep. As the router is an "always on " device it should keep the connection unless your ISP has its network set up to time out your IP address regardless of your connection status.
Your Base Station will have no effect on your internet speed because the minimum connect speed for most routers is much faster than even the fastest internet speed ( this axiom may soon be untrue with fiber getting so fast, but for now you router will not be the weak link in the chain.)
What a faster router will do is increase the speed within your network (moving files accross your local network), adding a layer of secuirty between you and the outside world (which is better than most software firewalls if you are connecting your Mac directly to your modem).
The new airport extreme (80211n) also has the added bouns of letting you network USB drives (great for backup and keeping large files off of your hard drive) and sharing USB printers.
I just set up mine and it works great. The automatic setup is VERY easy to use and did a good job setting up my network. And there are plenty of manual settings for advanced users ( I am tweaking some of my security settings now.)

I have a 2nd Gen Touch with the latest updated software. I use Airport to connect to the internet on my new iMac 24". Will the AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler software now offered in the Apple store($1.99) for Mac improve communications between the Touch and my iMac?

Nope. Your touch is still limited to b/g mode wireless. In fact, if you have an all n network, your touch won't even know that it exists.
Most of your Mac to iPod communication is via the USB cable unless you are using Remote or other applications that can move files on and off.
BTW, that software is to enable early intel Macs to use N wireless. If your Mac is relatively new, you won't need it.

I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

WMM for AirPort Extreme (802.11n) - UMA T-Mobile not working...

Is there any chance we'll see WMM (WiFi Multi-Media) in a firmware upgrade anytime soon? I noticed that according to the WiFi Alliance's website, when the AirPort Extreme was certified, it supported WMM!

As an early adopter, I just got a BlackBerry 8320 from T-Mobile, which does UMA, so you can use the phone over WiFi. Works awesome with wireless routers that do WMM, basically doesn't work with my AirPort Extreme... As you might imagine, this is quite frustrating, as I have particular desire to have two APs, for basically no reason!

i am a die-hard apple user- heck, even a long-time stockholder- and recently
bought an airport extreme (802.11n) router for my house. it worked
flawlessly and i thought it was the best thing since sliced bread... well,
until i picked up a UMA phone from T-Mobile.
UMA is a service that routes your calls over WiFi. for some reason the UMA
service worked everywhere except over my Airport Extreme base station. as a
surprise, it even worked over my neighbour's older Airport Extreme (802.11g)
connection.
i swapped base stations (ie, brought his base station to my house, connected
it to my network) and it worked. so, it is an issue that is clearly
isolated to the new 802.11n base stations.
thinking it was only me with this issue, i dug around the internet and found
this discussion:

obviously there's no resolution and people are getting quite peeved that a
state-of-the-art base station can't do something than an older base station

Why can't I install software for AirPort Extreme 802.11n while running Mountain Lion OSX? The installation CD simply says that the software can't be installed while running this OSX.

Mountain Lion already has the most recent, updated version of AirPort Utility installed on your Mac. The version on your CD is out of date, so you can trash the CD.
Look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.

How do I download to start using AirPort Extreme 802.11n. I can't find my start up disc. and don't see any downloads on Apples website. Then how do I hook it up to work with my Westell modem?

Please download and install AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows. The Windows Firewall and or Microsoft Security Essentials will tend to block the connection from your PC to the AirPort Extreme, so you may need to adjust the firewall settings on the PC or check the Essentials application if connection difficulties occur.

Currently the Airport Utility does not appear to be on the downloads page, you can call Apple support line to receive a replacement disk, but be aware there may be a charge for replacement CDs.

New Airport Extreme (802.11n): : Port Mapping... ***???

There are two different programs I was formerly using, whereby (after following instructions) I was able to create a static IP address for every machine on my network, plus open ports 8000 and 9990-9998 respectively. But ever since upgrading to the new Airport Extreme (802.11n), it completely stopped working. To boot, I've upgraded to Leopard on one of two of the machines (the other is still using 10.3.9).
I haven't been able to figure out for the life of me, how to configure it. It's no longer as obvious where and what information to put in. All guides that would remotely help are designed for the older Airport unit, which has completely different menus in the Airport Utility.
Is there anyone out there who has experience with Dot-Tunes and/or Nicecast or similar port mapping, who has the patience to describe, in layman's terms, what steps to take to get this set up correctly again, starting with how to reassign static IPs for my machines. I will not ask a lot of questions and take up too much more of your time. I'm just frustrated after a whole day of trying to figure this out and fruitless Google and forum searches.

I'm not familiar with either Dot-Tunes or Nicecast, but the following would be the general port mapping procedure with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) using the AirPort Utility. Note in this procedure you will not need to assign a static IP address for each of your host devices. Instead you will be taking advantage of the AEBSn's DHCP reservations feature.
To setup port mapping on an AEBSn, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
o Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
o Click "Continue"

Speed or Performance Issue with Airport Extreme 802.11n

Background:
Router 1: Linksys Wireless G 2.4GHz Router WRT54G (have been using for 1.5 years)
Router 2: Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station Model: A1143 (just arrived)
Macs: Intel MacBook Pro & MacBook both Newtwork Adapters upgraded to 802.11 a/b/g/n and verified via "Netwrok Utility". The Netwrok Utility also displays the link speed at 54 mb under interface info. when the Linksys G router is selected and the link speed at 144 mb when the airport extreme n is selected.
Observation & Issue:
Currently, for testing both network routers have been used seperatly (connected directly via the cable modem) and speeds for each latop verified via http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and normal "human" usage web surfing observations via Safari. Results below:
1. When using the Linksys G router both the MacBook and MacBook Pro appear to be performing well and responsive with little or no wait on graphically/media intense sites such as apple.com
The speakeast.net/speedtest/ (using the NYC hub close by) downoad test displays 8MB to 10MB speeds
2. On the otherhand, when using the Airpot extreme both the MacBook and MacBook Pro appear to be performing slower than usual with higher waits for image and page downloads.
In addition, the speakeast.net/speedtest/ (using the NYC hub close by) downoad test displays 2MB to 3MB speeds. Lower than what we experienced using the older router.
Request for advide or help:
1) Is this normal? Assuming it is not, what esle can I look at that can help me determine the root cause. The Airport Utility does not offer much assistance in this matter.
2) Thus far I have opted to revert back to my Linksys g router. However, before returning the product... any other adivce on a potential miss in the configuration or setup would be of great help.
3) Other's experiencing the same?

Contacted Apple Support (have an AppleCare account) tonight and the issue has been resolved with the caveat that I cannot have a mixed (g & n) radio mode on the same airport extreme base without significant loss of performance. These are the steps I was walked through to resolve my particular case:
1) Verify that your hardware is indeed upgraded to use n (see steps in my original post)
2) Open the AirPort Utility (new program that was installed from the install disc under applications/utility)
3) Click on the Airport Extreme image on the right hand column to open the Airport Extreme settings
4) Select the "Wireless" tab, then "Radio Mode" drop down and select 802.11n only (5 GHz)
5) Select Update to apply new settings.
Results:
When running the speakeasy.net/speedtest I am seeing results that are indeed better. However, the test shows that the top speed lowers a bit and jumps back up unlike when I am on my old g router, which does not have such a jump.
This test is not perfect but a good gauge. If anyone has any other ideas to test performance more accurately, please do let me know.
Note: Only n enabled devices now work with the n router. I will keep my old g router as a backup and for my work pc laptop.

i just bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler for my MacBook Intel Core Duo. when i opened the disk image and tried to install, i got an alert saying my computer does not meet the hardware requirements - even though it is a MacBook Intel Core Duo.
i followed all instructions on the Apple Store page before purchasing, including checking my Network Utility to verify whether i needed the software. currently i only have the 802.11 a/b/g adapter. see:

Your computer needs to be a Core 2 Duo-based Mac for the enabler to install, as the necessary hardware isn't present on an older processor or a 1.83GHz 17-inch iMac. If your computer supports the enabler, install this software and try installing the enabler again.

You may want to try reinstalling Mavericks. Airport Utility installed by Mavericks may no longer connect to your older AEBS (though I've not heard that.) Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
     after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
     Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
     Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
     Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from
     the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
     Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                three times faster than wireless.
