AirPort Extreme 802.11n macbook pro

I have just set up time capsule and it works perfectly (painless process setting this up!) One query i have is re: AirPort Extreme 802.11n.
I have a macbook pro 2.16GHz core duo, and according to network utility i have Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g). I have attempted to update this but I get the message that my computer:
Your computer does not meet the hardware requirements for this update.
Can i update or not? I have not restarted my comp since installing time capsule, would that maybe make a difference?

Sorry but "Core Duo" Macs do not have the 802.11n hardware.
Only "Core 2 Duo" Macs have the appropriate hardware.

I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

If you transfer personal info between computers fast speeds allowed up to 54 will save you time.
'n' is to provide greater range like Mimo and increased transfer speeds.

In my real world experience because I only have a 8mb ADSL connection 'g' is not the strongest and most reliable scenario to use. During the last airport update my last 3 years of uninterrupted airport connections mixed PC and Macs on WDS set up went belly up and I had posted my thoughts as well with the relevant results and now set up is fine. But at a price.
Downgraded to all on 'b' and now use my Draytek Vigor 2800VG and have AEBS put away in storage.
My signal and range is out of this world. When I decide that I have enough free time to sit in front of a TV and download movies and watch them when I have nothing better to do such as travel the world etc. etc., that is the time I will go for speed...or will I.
Dont get bamboozled by the hype. If you really want one wait for a year then decide. Let others solve the teething problems as is there want.

Airport Extreme 802.11n still in shrinkwrap -- should I return it unopened?

I just bought one of the new Airport Extreme 802.11n base stations today and haven't even had time to take it out of the shrinkwrap yet. Based on what I'm reading in this forum...I'm torn about what to do. Should I take it back unopened, or should I hang onto it, pray for no problems, and/or hope for fixes?
I had bought it primarily for the disk/print sharing features, but also to potentially take advantage of the draft-n speeds in the future. Since everything I own right now is g-only (Core Duo MacBook Pro, Airport Express hooked to my home theater, PSP, PC laptop from work), I'd be using the new AEBS only for 802.11g in the short term. However, I'd assume that ExpressCard/34 802.11n cards will come out at some point, enabling me to move to a mixed g/n network in the future.
The critical thing for me is a decent assurance that the router would work well in a g-only configuration since a friend is waiting to buy my old router. Is anyone trying to use the new AEBS in this way? If so, does it perform well, or are you seeing the same problems that the 802.11n users are seeing?

Airport Extreme 802.11n

Airport Extreme 802.11n.
I now have 802.11g airport router and wish to up grade to n. I have a new Macbook Pro and MacBook Air with n capability. Also have a wireless printer, air express and a wi-fi sony blue ray player. Am I going to have problems switching all these over?

In addition to Bob's remarks:
If it works now on your "g" network, it will work on the new one. But: you don't want the down compatibility from n to g.
Especially if you have the new Extreme with the 2 bands (2.4 and 5GHZ): the 5GHz band, although a somewhat lower sending power/reach is MUCH faster.
Like Bob said (he is the WIFI master) the printer and bluray player may have their own "specialty" behaviour.
The printer probably will not give a problem if you do not use its own wireless but connect it to the extreme with usb cable.
The bluray player I don't know, you should try it connected to the extreme.
Unlikely that, when connected directly, they will give problems.

Speed or Performance Issue with Airport Extreme 802.11n

Background:
Router 1: Linksys Wireless G 2.4GHz Router WRT54G (have been using for 1.5 years)
Router 2: Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station Model: A1143 (just arrived)
Macs: Intel MacBook Pro & MacBook both Newtwork Adapters upgraded to 802.11 a/b/g/n and verified via "Netwrok Utility". The Netwrok Utility also displays the link speed at 54 mb under interface info. when the Linksys G router is selected and the link speed at 144 mb when the airport extreme n is selected.
Observation & Issue:
Currently, for testing both network routers have been used seperatly (connected directly via the cable modem) and speeds for each latop verified via http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and normal "human" usage web surfing observations via Safari. Results below:
1. When using the Linksys G router both the MacBook and MacBook Pro appear to be performing well and responsive with little or no wait on graphically/media intense sites such as apple.com
The speakeast.net/speedtest/ (using the NYC hub close by) downoad test displays 8MB to 10MB speeds
2. On the otherhand, when using the Airpot extreme both the MacBook and MacBook Pro appear to be performing slower than usual with higher waits for image and page downloads.
In addition, the speakeast.net/speedtest/ (using the NYC hub close by) downoad test displays 2MB to 3MB speeds. Lower than what we experienced using the older router.
Request for advide or help:
1) Is this normal? Assuming it is not, what esle can I look at that can help me determine the root cause. The Airport Utility does not offer much assistance in this matter.
2) Thus far I have opted to revert back to my Linksys g router. However, before returning the product... any other adivce on a potential miss in the configuration or setup would be of great help.
3) Other's experiencing the same?

Contacted Apple Support (have an AppleCare account) tonight and the issue has been resolved with the caveat that I cannot have a mixed (g & n) radio mode on the same airport extreme base without significant loss of performance. These are the steps I was walked through to resolve my particular case:
1) Verify that your hardware is indeed upgraded to use n (see steps in my original post)
2) Open the AirPort Utility (new program that was installed from the install disc under applications/utility)
3) Click on the Airport Extreme image on the right hand column to open the Airport Extreme settings
4) Select the "Wireless" tab, then "Radio Mode" drop down and select 802.11n only (5 GHz)
5) Select Update to apply new settings.
Results:
When running the speakeasy.net/speedtest I am seeing results that are indeed better. However, the test shows that the top speed lowers a bit and jumps back up unlike when I am on my old g router, which does not have such a jump.
This test is not perfect but a good gauge. If anyone has any other ideas to test performance more accurately, please do let me know.
Note: Only n enabled devices now work with the n router. I will keep my old g router as a backup and for my work pc laptop.

How to install AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler?

I just bought the Airport Extreme and I have the CD that came with it loaded. I'm installing the package that is on the CD and it reads that the following items are available for installation and one of them is the Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler. I "continue" and it only allows me to do a basic upgrade. How do I know that the Enabler was correctly installed and I can now access using 802.11n?
I have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz

Steve, fire up your Network Utility. You can find it in your Utilities folder. From the row of tabs across the top of the window select "Info" - the first option on the left. Nxt select the "network interface for information". You'll be wanting "(en1)". At the bottom of the info you'll see an entry for "Model Wireless Network Adapter". In parenthesis under this title will be "802.11" and some letters. If you see a letter "n" then it means the enabler did its thang!
To actually select how your computer will communicate with that little white box with the green light on the front (um...it is green, isn't it?) then fire up your Airport Utility. Select "Manual" setup. Make sure you have the Airport icon highlighted at the top of the window then select the "Wireless" tab. The "Radio Mode" entry is where you do your bit to select "g", "n" or whatever in 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
I find it best to do one thing at a time. Slower but at least I can undo the mess easily.

Not able to see disk connected to AirPort Extreme 802.11n

I just installed my AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wireless Base station. Wireless internet works like a charm, however, I cannot see my external hard disk when it is connected to the base station (amber light blinking and when checking the problem, I am told that "Disk needs repair"). When connecting the hard disk directly to the PC, I have no problem seeing the data. Any tips or tricks out there... ?
AirPort Extreme 802.11n Windows XP

I finally got my 500 GB Western Digital MyBook USB drive to work by reformatting it to HFS+ format.
Of course, before I could do that, I had to copy all my files onto another hard drive. That job took a day to accomplish.
I work with Poser, and have a lot of content installed... We're talking thousands of files.
Once the drive was reformatted to HFS+ format, I copied everything back over. That took another day. Then I connected to the AEBS.
The USB drive was immediately recognized. It was incredibly easy to access the USB drive on my PCs. It required no effort on my part, except to supply the password.
In the end, I've decided this effort is a failure.
The drive is way too slow for my needs. Also, one of my vital Poser utilities (CorrectReference Pro) will not work properly with the USB drive on the AEBS.
I am currently in the process of copying all those files over to two external USB hard drives attached to my other PC.
Then I plan to unmount my 500 GB MyBook drive, and reformat it back to NTFS. I'll let the Notebook PC have it on a direct connection again.
I have a couple "junk" External Hard drives that are 160 GB. Maybe I'll use one of those as an Airport disk...
But I won't be using the Airport disk for anything important. It's too slow.

Help needed connecting Iomega Minimax Ext HDD to Airport Extreme 802.11n

Would appreciate if someone can help me with the following task. After researching and trying several things, I have not succeed in resolving the issue.
I want to connect a Iomega MiniMax Ext HDD (for Mac) to my (Airport Extreme 802.11n + Time Capsule) box using the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. Then I want to access the Ext HDD wirelessly as a drive on my Macbook (snow leopard OS). I was told this was possible at the Apple Store...but have failed so far.

The following are the basic steps for sharing an external USB drive attached to either an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) or a Time Capsule (TC):
o Plug the hard disk into the USB port on the back of the base station.
o Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Mac, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows
o Select your base station, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Disks in the toolbar, and then, click File Sharing.
o Choose “With a disk password,” or “With base station password” if you want to secure the shared disk with a password, or choose “With accounts” if you want to secure the disk using accounts. If you choose to use accounts, click Configure Accounts, click the Add "+" button, and then enter a name and password for each user that will access the disk. For simplicity, I would recommend using the "With a disk password" option.
o Choose “Not allowed,” “Read only,” or “Read and write” to assign guest access to the disk.
o Select the “Share disks over Ethernet WAN port” checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the WAN port.
You should now be able to find this drive within Finder under the SHARED category.

AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band is reporting problems?

I can not find an answer for my error-problem:
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band is reporting problems!
I have an optimum on line cable modem connected to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band.
Ethernet cables connect it 1. into my new Nehalem Mac Pro, 2. into my back-up Quicksilver PowerMac. I also have 2nd gen. iPod touch works on WiFi.
This set-up has been working well but now I daily get the above error. Sometimes it says also: You have different locations set-up and it asks me to go through the set-up procedure. May be I did the initial set-up incorrect. I don't quite understand "locations" and it's purpose.
Also the Airport runs very hot so I put a small fan in front of it. A few times I had to disconnect the cable mains to reset and get back my service. Please help.

Can you tell what's telling you about those locations? An Apple AirPort unit can maintain different "configurations" so that it could be used in different locations without a complete reconfiguration. However, I don't believe they're ever referred to as "locations". On the other hand, a Mac can have multiple "locations" defined in the Network panel of System Preferences. Those can be useful if the Mac is used in different places with different arrangements.
If your AirPort Extreme is having problems the status light on the front will probably be amber. If you launch AirPort Utility and double-click on the AirPort Extreme item on the left, you should be able to see more details about the problem.

Installing Airport Extreme 802.11n card in eMac killed keyboard?

I got an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station and card for my eMac (which I want to run in the next room from my new Mac Pro) from local Apple Store yesterday.
I read and followed the card installation instructions exactly. - This included installing the software from the CD.* - But as soon as I installed the card, my mouse and keyboard lost contact with the eMac. (Totally unresponsive to key commands or mouse movement.)
I shut down my eMac and my (new) Philips DSL modem: both of these have shown no symptoms up to the time of the card installation. I un-installed the card and waited 5-minutes. Modem and eMac came back normally and so did my keyboard and mouse.
Just prior to installation, I ran DiskWarrior and Repair Permissions. Also: I unplugged and "re-plugged" the USB keyboard and mouse before shutting down of eMac & modem - this made no difference.
* I did notice: The documentation for the base station says the eMac needs Airport Setup Assistant 5.2. The eMac has Airport Setup Assistant 4.2. Yet - when I ran the installation program, it recognized and reported as updated Airport Setup Assistant 4.2.
Anyone have a solution to my loss of keyboard and mouse with card installed? Please - the Mac Pro arrives tomorrow.

I'm answering my own question:
I got around to simply trying a second time to install the Airport Extreme card in this eMac. This time - I shut it down before starting installation of the card.
I suspected that shutting down would be a good idea - since it seems very likely that the System needs to load whatever drivers or extensions are needed to enable Airport. But the instruction either did not mention shutting down before installing the card or I missed mention of it in my haste to complete this and numerous other tasks before day's end.
Anyway - that seems to be what happened because bootup was normal and the mouse cursor and keyboard worked as soon as the desktop appeared.
Now - I proceed to setup the base station and test it on the eMac. If all goes as I hope - in 36 hours I'll have both this old eMac and the new Mac Pro living happily in their separate rooms.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n and PowerBooks?

I am about 1.5 seconds away from buying one of the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base stations to work with my AirPort Express but I have some questions / concerns.
1) Is my Powerbook capable of being enabled to access an "n based network" or is my money wasted on a router capable of speeds my computer can not access?
2) Should my computer be capable of accessing this network, is the Airport Express Base Station I have capable of acting on this network in "N speed" too? I know the base station can be configured to act essentially as a relay to boost signal strength...if set up to do so will it dumb the speed down to "G speed"?
3) If 1 and 2 are true and the express base station dumbs the speed of the N router down, can I configure the airport express base station to ONLY act as a wireless conection to my stereo and not as a wireless router, so as to allow my Powerbook to access the "N" speed network but still broadcast my music wirelessly to the stereo?

Hey for any one still lookin....
1. It all depends on what your CARD is capable of. Your POWERBOOK is more then capable of "N" speeds. Your only limited on the bandwidth of the Cardbus slot. You would have to have a third party card to access the new "N" speeds tho. I'm not sure if the last batch of (pre MacBooks) Powerbooks even made it to the "G" standard. I know Apple just came out with a driver for the latest Macs that have an upgradeable Card and or Basestation to get to "N". I really don't think your Express is upgradeable.
2. You need to look at what models you have to figure out what their capable of. You should be able to go to Apple's web site to find out. Usually the Router will Dumb it down to the SLOWEST speed. Unless you were streaming your music, and playing a game online, and transferring a large file you shouldn't have a problem anyway. As long as you are not using the slowest product it won't dumb down.
3. Haven't got that far yet. I've used up all my brain cells getting this far, so good luck on your mission. Try starting another string with specifics on what you want to do.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n 4% Packet Loss

I have three laptops (Macbook, HP, and ThinkPad), an iPhone 4, iPad, and a Wii on my wireless network. I replaced an old Linksys 802.11g access point and router with a new Airport Extreme 802.11n.
Everything has been working fairly good except my ThinkPad. The TP has a ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III card and can connect to everything from coffee shop wireless to my Cisco WLAN using PEAP/WPA2 at work without skipping a beat.
But here at home, with my new Airport - I'm losing about 4% of the pings I run and it'll drop my connection without warning. Almost like the WPA key is rotating, then just dies.
The MacBook has an 802.11n card and can run extended ping tests without dropping a single one.
The HP has an Intel centrino abg card and runs 0% loss as well.
If I connect my old Linksys back up - I get 0% packet loss on WPA2 again, but to the AirPort - 4%.
It's making my wireless network exceptionally frustrating.

This is what I get when I'm connected to the main wireless network using 802.11g WPA2 (AES or TKIP).
If you'd like to do this test, simply type this command from a command line (or terminal on an OS X computer)

Not a single drop... and I'm still pinging the AirPort's IP address, so I know it's not the device itself dropping pings. It must be something funky with my T400's wireless card and the private network, nothing else makes sense.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n no route to host

Hi, I have a AirPort Extreme 802.11n router with the latest firmware installed. My setup is such that my laptop is connected to the router via ethernet and my iPhone is connected via wifi, both using the same subnet, router address and dns address. The problem I'm having is that while my laptop is connected via ethernet it can ping and access file sharing services on my iPhone, but when my laptop is connected via wifi the iPhone is not reachable and pings return a "no route to host". I've looked at the traffic via wireshark and the only thing I see when trying to do direct wifi to wifi communications is that the arp request for the identity of the iPhone's IP is never answered. Is this a limitation of the airport extreme base station or is there a setting somewhere I need to change in order for wifi to wifi communication to work? Also note that the same problem was experienced with another laptop also running Leopard and connected to the network via wifi (both running 10.5.5) so this is not a local problem with my laptop software environment. Thanks!

I'm experiencing a similar problem. The AirPort Extreme will connect to a Windows PC but not my Mac Book Pro (unless I have a wired connection).
