Airport Extreme acting strangely sometimes

My daughter has Comcast as her provider. She had a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. She hooks her AEBS to the cable modem via Ethernet cable. She has DCHP and NAT turned on in the base station. Twice recently the router has started flashing an amber light. querying the router with the utility says that it can't find a DNS server and that there are double NAT and the router should be switched to "Bridge" mode. She has not had any problems before for several months. We powered everything off (computer, router, modem) and restarted with first the modem, then the router, then the computer. Then again querying the router everything shows OK - green lights. She has been keeping the modem in standby but I don't see why this would contribute to the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If that is the case, how did you set it up in the first place then?
I suspect bridge mode may be on....
You may want to just factory reset the router, and set it up using the iPhone.

  • My Airport is acting strange

Hello, I got a problem i would like to get some help with:
It is my Airport that's not acting as it should. It have been doing this for just about three months and what it does is acting all unlogically. As an example:
    1. When I set the airport network to DHCP and (witch is what i use for normal "wire-ethernet") the airport base to DHCP, the networkstats says "You are conected to the network ---my networkname--- and conected to internett" or something like that. And that is strange because when i open Firefox to check the conection, there are non.
    2. If i set the airport network to PPPoE and the airport base to PPPoE the base station disappears from the airport-admininstrator-tool. And it won't appear until you change the airport network back into DHCP. Then it comes back.
    3. If you have any other combinations the airport will just keep on searching for an IP-adress.
And the lights don't do as they should either. They often stay of (except the powerlight witch is on) and I havn't seen both of the lights (right and left) flashing at the same time, as they should (and did), for a long time.
I have sent it for a round of service. They only did a firmware update and said it was fine. But don't recond any difference, it is the same way as it was before.
So I ask can you help me?
(I hope you can excuse me for the uncorrect destination-names, my mac is on Norwgian.)
And here is the specs on my airport card (if it makes a difference):
    Type: AirPort Extreme
    Locality: International
    Firmware version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18)
    Active network: ---my network name---
    Wireless chanel: 1
    Thanks!

Folks: *there may be a power/signal issue going on here.* I had a similar problem of my network connection dragging to practically nothing when hooking up my LaCie external drive to the USB port. Please see my post below (link and text)

    Folks:
Apple needs to get on this issue fast; after turning off my N mode on my WRT160N Linksys Router, I got my packet speed back up to where it should be... HOWEVER I noticed another problem.
When I hooked up my LaCie external drive (connected via USB), my packets on PING practically stall to nothing. I then eject the external USB drive and re-ping and I get acceptable packet speeds; I re-connect the LaCie external drive to the USB port and my PING crawls to nothing.
There is CLEARLY a correlation between the network speed crawling to nothing while hooking up an external drive; possibly a power sink and/or signal interference on the Airport when hooking up a USB device? (or perhaps even Firewire 800 too?)
I sure hope Apple is reading this one, because this could be a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed ASAP.

  • Airport is acting strange, slowing my internet

About a week ago I started experiencing a rather strange issue with my MacBook Pro. While connected to my network, my internet still works but when I try to connect to website it takes a good 10-15 seconds to load a web page during that time my browser shows "looking up www.apple.com" in the lower left hand corner a message I used to get when I used to use WPA and my internet network connection got dropped. As soon as it stops displaying the "looking up" message, the web page loads in snap like it would have before these issues began or if I was using any other computer in my house.
It is definitely an issue with the wireless because I've plugged in the MBP via Ethernet both through my modem and the router I use and the issue disappears. I know it isn't the router because it worked fine before and these issues are non-existent on any of my other wireless devices connected to the same network and I can still access other network functionality (e.g. accessing other computers on the network and exchanging files). What I am trying to figure out now is whether or not this an OS X based issue or a problem with the hardware inside my MBP. Since the problem appears to be isolated to the internet I am leaning towards the former.
Is anyone else experienced/experiencing similar issues? Does anyone having any tips for resolving this problem?

  • Mail program acts strangely - sometimes it will receive and send, sometimes not?

I use an older G5 iMac at the office, which is running OS X 10.3.9, and has Mail version 1.3.11 (v.622). For the longest time, I haven't been able to get the program to hold the password and submit it. Usually, Mail will work properly, downloading messages and sending them. Sometimes, the program will ask me to enter my password. Most of the time all I've had to do is hit 'Cancel' instead of entering the password manually, and usually after doing that once or twice, it will send the password to my mail center, download what's there, and allow me to send emails.
The past couple of days, it seems to be random chance whether the program will work. I might have to enter the password 5, 10 times to download mail, or quit and restart. Sometimes, messages I send will load properly, but most of the time it hangs at entering password and I have to enter the password multiple times.
No, I haven't changed the mailbox settings. They seem to be entered correctly.
I'd like to try reloading Mail only from the startup disc, but it seems to be integrated into the basic Install of the entire operating system. Is there a way to download Mail by itself from the startup disc?
Barring that, will reloading the entire OS cause me any problems other than having to reload the subsequent releases to resume 10.3.9?
Thanks, I appreciate it if you can help me out!

Posting this query brought up similar ones in the forum's sidebar. I'll try working with Keychain and see if that solves the problem.

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station dropouts at 5 GHz

I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and a new Airport express to replace the two Airport Express 802.11g boxes. We have 100 Mbit fiber optic to the home services and it felt like a waste of money to have a network that couldn't keep up with our connection. I have the Airport Extreme acting as a base station dedicated to running at 5 GHz (to avoid I hoped interference from the microwave) and I have the Airport Express working as an extension to the network allowing our 802.11g limited early 2006 iMac to use the new 802.11n network via its hardwired ethernet port. The problem I am having is that the Airport Express drops the connection and is unavailable from the list of available networks for a period of time. If I power down/up the Airport Express all is well and if I wait the network comes back by itself as well. I have no idea what is causing this. The network signal is about 40% according to AirRadar and certainly works beautifully before it drops out with no advanced warning. Has anyone else seen this -- or even better has anyone else seen this and have an idea of what to do to fix it?

The range on 5ghz may be longer if you have no barriers. However, the 5ghz will be affected more by walls and objects. In general, 5ghz doesn't work for me in my house.

  • Can I use the AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender to my Time Capsule ?

Can I use AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender ? I own a Time Capsule and want to extend my wireless network using the AirPort Extreme just because both have wifi AC. Also, does the AirPort Extreme need to be hook up via Ethernet if I extend

The problem with extending using a wireless connection between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme is this.......
The extender can only "extend" the speed of signal that it receives. The signal starts to lose speed as soon as it leaves the Time Capsule, and the signal will lose quite a bit of speed as it passes through the ceiling due to the thick construction. The ceiling presents what is known as "interference" to the wireless signal.
So, the signal has slowed somewhat by the time that it reaches an AirPort Extreme that would be installed on the main floor.  That AirPort Extreme acting as an extender can make the signal that it receives go further, but it cannot make it go faster.  A better term than "extender" really might be "repeater".
If you install an AirPort Extreme on the main floor, the signal upstairs will be stronger than it is now, and depending on how many obstructions there are between the AirPort Extreme and the upstairs area, the signal may be noticeably faster upstairs than it is now as well.
With wireless connections between devices, there are always so many compromises and variables involved that it is just not possible to predict what the actual performance might be in your home until you try things out in your home. For that reason, it is always a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance in case a new item does not deliver the performance that you are hoping to achieve.
Now, let's say that you are able to pull an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to the main floor, and the AirPort Extreme is connected there in a nice, central location. Then, you could expect to receive about the same performance on the main floor that you receive in the basement, since the AirPort Extreme is receiving a full speed signal over the Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule. You can run an Ethernet cable about 330 feet, or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss.
The performance upstairs will improve as well, since the AirPort Extreme has a full speed signal to broadcast....not the slower speed signal that would receive from the Time Capsule if it connects using wireless.
If you want to achieve the same type of performance upstairs that you have in the basement and main floor, then you will need to pull an additional Ethernet cable up to the upstairs floor and add another AirPort there.
That would probably be the "best" wireless network system that you could install if you are looking at all the options. Few of us are lucky enough to be able to install the "best" network, but those that are receive remarkable wireless performance in return for their investment.

  • Airport Extreme V5.1 and XP home SP3

I'm having some trouble sharing internet with Airport Extreme V5.1 and the router. My computer (XP home SP3) is always connected wirless to the airport extreme base but sometimes internet is not available. The router is set to be DHCP+NAT and the cable is connected to WAN port on the APE. With airport utility I've set the following:
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Manually
IP address: [one IP in the range sets in the router]
Subnet Mask: [The Subnet set in the router]
    Router address: [Router IP]
Server DNS: [DNS sets in the router]
    Domain Name: Blank
    Ethernet WAN port: Automatic (Default)
Connection sharing: distribute a range of IP address
    Someone can help me?

I think I solve my problem changing the setting in "Connection sharing" to Off (bridge mode).

  • Using an AirPort Extreme to extend my network

Hi, I am an astronomy fanatic and am looking for the best way to connect my Sphinx SXD2 Vixen mount to my network. It has a LAN Port. My ideas is to purchase an additional AirPort Extreme which will wirelessly extend my network from my home to my observatory outside and then connect my MacMini and Vixen Mount to it.
This way I can control everything from inside my house where it is nice and warm.
Will this work? Can an AirPort Extreme act as a wireless hub?
    Thanks
    Herbert

You basically asked the same question yesterday except this one mentions an AirPort Extreme.
    The same information applies.
What happened when you tried our suggestions on your other post?

  • Differences between Time Capsule and Airport Extreme re Time Machine?

We are [told|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2299608] that a "USB drive connected to a recent dual-band Airport Extreme may work as a destination for Time Machine backups," but that "... it's not supported by Apple."
With regard to Time Machine, what are the relevant differences between a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme acting as a USB disk server, e.g. protocol used, size limits, server limitations, etc.?

+We are told that a "USB drive connected to a recent dual-band Airport Extreme may work as a destination for Time Machine backups," but that "... it's not supported by Apple."+
A bit of clarification. For the record, Apple says that you cannot do this in this Support Document. I haven't seen a similar document for Snow Leopard, but I'm sure it's out there. You will receive no assistance from Apple in the event of any problems.
Despite this, some users have tried this anyway. Some report success, others report some success and yet others report no success. We've also seen a number of recent posts from users who say that it worked for them for a time...several weeks to several months...but they are now experiencing problems.
Having experienced the latter myself first hand, my opinion would be that it would be unwise to even consider Time Machine backups with the AirPort Extreme unless you have another backup strategy already in place.
The Time Capsule was designed to work with Time Machine backups. The AirPort Extreme was not. The answer may be that simple.

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

  • HT4600 i Get a solid amber light sometimes, bUT all works fine. I have to unplug the airport extreme to reset it and then it turns green and starys that way for a week or so and then turns back to amber. why is this and how do i fix it ?

I gat a solid amber light once a week on my airport extreme, but all works fine. I have to unplug it to reset it and then the light turns back to green and it is good for another week and then it happens again. why is this and what can i do to fix it ?

Solid amber on an AirPort Extreme is an indication that the internal power supply is starting to act up.
If the AirPort Extreme is in warranty, it shouid be exchanged for another AirPort Extreme.
If the AirPort Extreme is several years old, keep any eye on things. When/if you find that you are having to reset the device several times a week, it's time to start thinking about a replacement device, as the end is near.

  • Why does the new Dual-Band AirPort Extreme Base Station act as a proxy?

    The previous thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1531675
has been archived and nothing came of it, but after testing, I'm certain that their findings are true.
The Dual-Band AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with firmware 7.4.1 acts as a proxy for TCP ports 21, 554, and 7070 when NAT is turned on. This can be verified by using Nmap on any external server known to NOT have the ports open and having Nmap return that the ports are open. You can telnet to these ports to verify that they're "open," even though they are not on the server.
This functionality appears to be undocumented and as far as I can tell, the only way to turn it off is to put the AEBS into bridge mode and having some other device do NAT further upstream.
As a computer professional, this functionality extremely undesirable, particularly since it is not documented and doesn't have an "off switch." I wasted a bunch of time with one of my network engineers because of this, thinking that some network router was spoofing our server. I also wasted a bunch of my time trying to detect whatever "stealthy rootkit" had opened a FTP server and some other botnet related ports on our server, when in reality, it was simply my AEBS tricking me.
Disabling NAT-PMP ("Enable NAT port mapping protocol") does not affect this.
Is it too much to ask to have a checkbox in the "Advanced" section of the AirPort Utility to turn this feature off?

Welcome to the discussions forum Michael Bennett2.
Thanks for investigating this odd behavior.
If you want your work to be noticed by those who can effect change, you'll have to tell Apple via their feedback link. It won't do any good to post it here.

I have a iMac with a built in airport extreme card.  Does the imac act as a wireless router so that I can connect to the internet from my iPad by tethering through my iMac?

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.
