AirPort Extreme After My Computer Sleeps

When I wake up my MacBook from sleeping, something I try to avoid in the first place, I always lose my connection to the external HD plugged in to my AirPort Extreme.
I'll still have a connection to the internet, but I'll be logged in as a "Guest" on my external drive. Is there a way to stop this from happening?
I just upgraded to Leopard, but I was experiencing the problem prior. The AirPort Extreme is set for 802.11n.
The only solution I've found is to go into the AirPort Utility and reset the AirPort Extreme. This gets to be a slightly annoying.

I was browsing discussions, searching for a solution for exactly this problem. My cold comfort now is just - I am not alone
I have an iMac and a MB (both 10.5.2) connected to Airport Extrem (mixed mode). Either of both computers may fall asleep and the Airdisk connection is broken for both computers. Internet connection is not affected. It is anything else but an accident - 100% reproduceable. The only way to recover is a restart of the Airport Extreme.
I already wrote a feedback to Apple. I suggested to add a Restart-Button to the disk utility. To bad ...

  • Macbook Pro loses Airport Extreme after the Screen switches off.

I am experiencing problems where my MBP is losing the network connection with my Airport Extreme after the screen switches off (the MBP is not does not sleep).
I could be watching a video streaming from my MBP to my ATV, and all of a sudden it stops, and the ATV loses its connection with my MBP. On looking at the MBP it is still connected to the internet, but it can't physically see my Airport Extreme. I've opened the Airport Utilities program and it cannot find the Airport Extreme, even though I am still connected to it.
The only way I can fix it is to turn off the Airport on my MBP and then turn it back on and everything comes right.
This has only just started happening in the last week or so, and I have never had a problem before.
I've had a look through the forums, and on Google, but others seem to be losing their internet, etc. I am still able to access the internet, just not anything connected the Airport Extreme (e.g. USB harddrive).

What are you doing to change it to a static channel? I've been having this same problem and have tried going to Network Settings>>Advanced>>TCP/IP>>Configure IPv4, changed setting to "Using DCHP with manual address", and changed the IP address to an available ip. I've done this a lot of times before I had the monitor problem to solve the IP conflict problems I get sometimes on my network, but this didn't fix the external monitor issue. Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks

  • Airport Extreme Stopping G5 from Sleeping.. Help!!

I have just upgraded to Leopard. Before the upgrade my G5 would go to sleep automatically as set in the Power saving prefs.
After upgrading to leopard I found that my G5 will not automatically go to sleep.
After pulling my hair our I have finally discovered that my airport is keeping my G5 powermac awake.
If I disconnect my networked printer and DSL modem from the modem, it does not go to sleep. When I disconnect the airport to G5 cable the G5 goes to sleep.
My Airport SW/firmware seems to be up to date.
    Has anyone got any ideas?
Anything I can do with the ports to stop it from pinging my G5 and keeping it awake?
    Any ideas are welcome!
    Thanks,
    Steve.

Although I know you tried resets, but please give the following a go:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Skype problems with Airport Extreme after update

I use Skype to call regular phones and landlines. For over a year now it has worked well with my Airport Extreme, however, I noticed that around the same time I updated my Airport utility to 5.5.2 and Mac OS X update on 1/7/11 I am having problems with audio getting scrambled, the person on the other end dropping out, and my voice dropping out of their calls and the sound of me "being in a long tunnel," as they describe it. If I plug the ethernet directly into my computer there is no problem so I know it is the Airport base station.
I have tried plugging and unplugging the base station and I had comcast reset my cable modem but nothing seems to be working. I have 12 mbps internet so I know it is not a bandwidth problem.
    Please help! Thank you!

Indeed I have the same problem.  I ended up buying a new router because I thought mine was malfunctioning.  After buying the latest generation Airport Extreme, turns out it's having the same problem.  I agree that it was not a problem until 5.5.2.  Also, I use YouSendIt constantly and it also chokes the Airport Extreme.  It appears to happen in scenarios of high bandwidth usage.
    5.5.3 maybe coming soon?

  • Can't see Airport Extreme after Snow Leopard Update

I'm running 10.6.2 with every update, and while I have no trouble connecting to my wifi network on the Airport Extreme (about 2 years old), I can't see it in the Airport Utility program (5.4.2) in order to administrate the hardware. I can see the Express that is also joined to the network set up on the Extreme and administrate that device fine.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,

    Welcome to the discussions!
I think you meant to say that you can't "see" an AirPort Express. (The AirPort Extreme has no audio jacks to connect to a stereo system).
Try temporarily connecting an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express (AX) and open AirPort Utility to see if that helps locate the AX so you can check the configuration settings on the device. Once you have it adjusted and updated, you can disconnect the ethernet cable.
If the ethernet hookup is not successful after a few tries, you will need to reset the AX back to factory defaults and then reconfigure it again. To do this:
Power down the AirPort Express for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 8-10 seconds
If you want to use wireless to reconfigure the AX, AirPort Utility should "see" it when you open the application. If no luck that way, then try the ethernet cable method.

  • Airport issue after wake from sleep (lion)

With 10.6, this was not a problem. With Lion, very often after wake up from sleep mode, the system is unable to reconnect to my airport extreme base station. Killing the prefs in the library did not help. Any suggestions?

My wife's Macbook has EXACTLY the same problem and I've been through dozens of suggestions trying to fix it and the problem still persists.
The problem started right after I upgraded to Snow Leopard but also installed an Airport Extreme router and WPA2 wireless encryption. I've deleted all the networks, changed the order to put the Airport as the highest preference, deleted all the keys on the keychain, ran DiskUtility, all to no avail.
I'm not sure if this is somehow related to the Airport Extreme or occurs with any router. Also, have another MacBook Pro (unibody), and it does't have this problem connecting to the same Airport Extreme.
The other factor is it is intermittent --- and doesn't always fail. Rebooting the Macbook or the router will get it to re-connect, as will shutting off and turning on the Airport several times. But that's not a solution to the problem.
Apple needs to pay attention to this as many people are now reporting the problem.

  • Airport Issue After Waking From Sleep (White Unibody MacBook)

Hi all. On my new white unibody MacBook I have an Airport issue that always occurs after I wake the MacBook from sleep. I'm wondering if any of you have a similar issue and/or might not how to solve it.
Basically, when I wake the MacBook from sleep, it connects to my wireless network (and to whichever network I happen to be using at the time). A few seconds later, it will drop the connection, an exclamation mark will appear on top of the Airport icon on the menu bar, and when I click on the icon I see "Alert: No Internet Connection."
Then, if I just sit and wait, eventually Airport will connect to the network. But I have to wait -- selecting the network from the available list or turning Airport off and on doesn't help. And sometimes waiting isn't enough -- I sometimes have to go to "Create Network ..." and start all over to get a connection.
I've upgraded to 10.6.2 and the issue persists. I'd appreciate any help.

  • CANNOT ACCESS AIRPORT EXTREME after reload opsys

I'm using macbook 10.4.10 and my safari browser started blowing out whenever I tried to watch a YouTube video. As soon as my mouse would touch any link, the browser shut down. I reloaded my 2 original operating discs, but now my airport extreme is greyed out. When I try to click on my network to access it, I am unable to. I reloaded my airport disc, but nothing has changed.
(I am writing this from my DH's computer because I cannot access the internet.)

I've tried to install the Airport Enabler .pkg and "errors" shut it down.
I can find my network listed, but the bottom right button is greyed out, even after I enter my password.
I opened ::something:: in System Preferences to be sure "Automatic" was selected (it was) and I've also tried entering "11" in this area, no go. There seems to be a password problem, while in this area, I turned on "view password" and there was a string of random characters a mile long.
I thought MAC computers couldn't be hacked?
How can I resolve a password problem when the WPA wireless security (and ALL securities) have "OK" greyed out?
Why would reloading my original operating system discs cause my wifi to change?
Who would I phone to resolve this lack of internet access problem???

  • Using an external hard drive with an airport extreme and HP computer

    - I recently bought the airport extreme, and also bought a Seagate external hard drive for my music files.  I can see the hard drive on the airport utility but cannot access it or find where to access it.  I am using an HP computer with windows 7.
    Help please!

The AirPort Extreme cannot share out the attached Seagate USB hard drive if it is formatted in NTFS or ExFat. Please check to see that it is formatted in either FAT32 or HFS+ (Apple format).
If it is already formatted in either of the latter two formats, then verify that the AirPort Utility can properly identify the hard drive by using the AirPort Utility for Windows.
Finally please checkout the following Apple Support article for details on accessing this shared drive from a Windows PC.

  • Can't connect to airport extreme after installing 10.10

After installing OS X 10.10 WiFi connection with Airport Extreme drops out a couple of different ways.  Log in fails, Says Airport extreme is not there (2ft away), drops data connection with all WiFi bars showing.
Drops data connection mid data transfer.  Then after sever power recycles of the MacBook Pro connection comes back.
Light on Airport Extreme is blinking.  This iMac is also connected passing data via the same Airport extreme while the MacBook Pro is having the above experiences.
Anyone experiencing WiFi issues since 10.10?

You can download the Apple Airport Utility directly from Apple:

  • Installing airport extreme after a router

when connecting an airport extreme to a router (AE after the router), should the wire from the router go into the WAN or LAN port of the AE?

It won't matter which port you use if you configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode, which is the correct setting when you have another router ahead of the AirPort Extreme.
All the ports become LAN ports in Bridge Mode.
    AirPort Utility >  Manual Setup
Internet icon > Interner Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Be sure to restart the entire network after you change the Extreme to Bridge Mode.

  • Gigabit on AirPort Extreme After I bought

So Apple are you going to exchange my Airport Extreme without Gigabit Ethernet for one with? Just weeks after I purchased the Airport Extreme (thinking it had Gigabit), you release a model that does. After completely converting from PC to OSX, and purchasing 4 computers this year, and many other accessories, I think that I and others like me deserve to have their Airports exchanged if they so desire.
    Yours Sincerely

dgrodzuik, Welcome to the discussion area!
As you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" of this area, no one from Apple will probably ever read your thread. This is a user-to-user discussion area and is not for contacting Apple.
I suggest you contact the place where you purchased the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to see if they can help you.

  • Noisy Airport Extreme after updating

According to the flasing light in my Airport Extreme there was an update available for it.  I downloaded the update and ever since the base station makes a funny noise.  It's working fine and I have no problems with the base station; my laptop works fine as does my Ipod Touch and the Time Machine but I'm wondering what the noise is.
Any ideas and should I worry about it?
    Thanks.

    Joseph.
Thank you for the reply.  I unplugged the unit for about 10 seconds, plugged it back in and thought the noise was gone.  But after the yellow light turned to steady greeen the noise came back.  The noise is hard to describe,  it's kind of a static like noise but has a rhythm to it.  Like I said everything works okay but it only starting making the noise after I installed the update.
Don't know where to go from here.
    Thanks for your efforts.
