Airport Extreme & Airport Card Compatibility

I have a G5 1.8 dual running 10.4.7 and a G4 450 dual running 10.4.7. If I purchase the Airport Extreme & hook it up directly to my G5, and the Airport Card for the G4, will everything work or are there some compatability issues?
Thanks, Gronky
G5 1.8 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   G4 450 dual OS X (10.4.7)

if you set the base station in compatability mode (so it supports both b and g operation) then it will support connections from the older 802.11b airport card as well as from more modern airport extreme and equivalent 802.11g cards

  • AIRPORT EXTREME CARD compatability

I have a G4/500 SAWTOOTH-AGP machine. Will an AirPort Extreme card work in this machine? I've looked everywhere, but cannot fine the answer. The specs for the card say "Will only work in machines that are Airport Extreme ready"...
I've looked up the specs on the SAWTOOTH, and it doesn't say anything other than "Airport ready"...
I've read LOTS and LOTS of postings by folks saying this card didn't work in their machines. Many where from G5 owners, so I don't know.

    Hi, Stacey!
The Airport Extreme card will not work. You need the original Airport Card or a third party option... Please see the following current thread for some really good info/options concerning this subject:

  • Airport card and airport extreme compatibility

I am currently using APE with Powerbook G4...love it. I also have an older iMac SE Graphite 600mhz and want to add it to my wireless network. Is the Apple airport card w/adapter that is no longer sold by apple compatible with
my newer APE base station?? Any thoughts on whether ebay is a good source for purchase. I have used ebay several times and have not been dissapointed so far.

Yes, the a Mac equipped with an original Airport card is fully compatible with an Airport Extreme Base Station.
For what its worth, I've never been disappointed either with the dozens of items I've purchased via EBay.

  • Airport card does not work with Airport Extreme when security is turned on

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.11 with an Airport card installed (firmware version 9.52).
I recently replaced my Netgear wireless router with an Apple Extreme Base station and now I am not able to connect my iMac to the wireless network when WEP security is turned on - I get an error from the Airport Setup Assistant when I attempt to connect to the wireless network.
It works fine if the wireless security on the Extreme Base station is turned off.
Please help and thanks in advance.
    Motasim

First, I highly recommend that you switch to either WPA or WPA2 as WEP is no longer considered secure. If you must use WEP, I suggest that you try the following:
o Re-create the Network Name (SSID) on your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o Try using 128-bit WEP, with a 26-Hex character key for the encryption type.

  • Airport Extreme Replacement Card - Mac Pro G5

I have an early Mac Pro G5 dual and just added the Apple M8881 Airport Extreme replacement card. Did not receive any software (driver?) with it. I am running Mac OSX 10.4. The only download I see for this card is for 10.3. The computer sees the card but the card sees no signals. Antenna, including the "T" antenna on rear of tower seems to be all ok. Any suggestions?

    Duane,
That's what I thought, thanks. If I put the computer right next to the base station, I get a very weak signal. When I unplug the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When I unplug the cable to the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When that close to the base station, some signal must be getting directly into the card. The problem must obviously be with the antenna jack and I will be returning the card for a replacement.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Extreme, express, airtunes & no airport card?

I have a new Mac Pro on the way without an airport card. It will be connected to an Airport Extreme. My stereo is connected to an Airport Express for airtunes, currently via my G4 (with an airport card). Is it possible to connect to the Express via the Extreme on the Pro using Airtunes without an airport card?

Is it possible to connect to the Express via the Extreme on the Pro using Airtunes without an airport card?
Yes. The Mac Pro would connect via Ethernet to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) which would pass the signal wirelessly to the AirPort Express (AX).

  • No Signal with Airport Extreme (Integrated) card - iMac G5 [Help!]

    Hello all,
Finally experiencing my first issue with a Mac. I have a Second Generation iMac G5, purchased in June of this year (2005). I have used it's integrated Airport Extreme card to connect to my WLAN since I purchased it, with the only issue being I have to occasionally power cycle my Linksys router to re-enable wireless (When this happens, all of my wireless computers are affected)
This evening, while on my iMac G5, I lost internet connectivity (iTunes was unable to look up CD music track info from the web)..Safari wouldn't load pages either. So i power cycled my wireless router again.
After it came back up, My signal strength stayed at 0 on my iMac. After power cycling the router, turning off/on my Aiport card, and rebooting my mac, my signal strength is still at 0.
I am also using a piece of software called MacStumbler to detect networks and signal strength. Randomly, it's picking up my network: It'll pop up and then dissapear.
I have not moved my iMac this afternoon, or even recently (Since July). I put it to sleep in the evenings. The Airport card is integrated so there's no antenna to come loose.
    Any Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!

    Tom, Belbe,
Thanks for your responses. I still dont know what "WAS" causing my Integrated Airport Extreme Problems. I turned my iMac off last night and left it off all morning until around 12 AM CDT or so. When it came up, the wireless worked fine..and has all day.
Belbe, i have the "Put hard disks to sleep whenever possible" un-checked, and have for a while. My wireless went out while my machine was up and running and while i was importing music in iTunes. It may have been my router just not accepting my iMac's MAC address after I power cycled it.
I'll mark this as answered and move along quietly

  • Is Airport Card necessary to run Airport Extreme in Windows PC?

I know this sounds extremely stupid, but the instruction manual states this as a requirement. My setup consists of a Dell PC, which will be hosting the Airport router, and 2 Macs which will be networked to it. The 2 Macs obviously have the Airport Cards installed in them, but does the PC need one installed too.. or will the router work without it? I've been having the hardest time getting this to work

No the Windows PC does not require wireless access, simply plug it into the ethernet port as you did wth the D-Link.

  • E-mac (usb 2.0), will extreme airport card work?

    Hi fellow discussionists,
I just purchased a second hand e-mac. When I type it's serial number into a website, it tells me it is a E-mac (usb 2.0) model. I found some documentation on Apple's website saying this is compatible with an 'extreme airport card'.
Before I log on to the apple store and order one, can anyone tell me if an extreme airport card will work with this model e-mac?
    Thanks for your time!

My eMac is also eMac (USB 2.0). I purchased an Airport Extreme card and inserted it into the computer, then tried to run the install disk. But I get a message telling me that I "cannot install Aiport on this volume. My software is currently up to date." What's the problem? It says I must have OS X v10.3 or later and I have 10.4.11. Yet My base light is solid orange and I am at a loss.
    Thanks.

  • Airport Card can not find the Airport Extreme Station

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
In AirPort Utility how is your AirPort Extreme configured in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Radio Mode list? If it's set to 802.11n only the AirPort card in your G5 probably doesn't support that.

  • Seting up airport extreme basestation with out airport card

I just ordered a mac pro and will be getting the free ipod touch under the educator back to school program. It was only later that I discovered. How much I will be missing on the ipod touch with out wifi. I tried to add the airport card to the mac pro but it was to late as it is on it's way here now.
We have dsl and I was wondering if I were to buy the airport extreme base station. Would I be able to use it, and configure it. Using my new mac pro with out a airport card. Through only the ethernet cable or do you have to log into it wirelessly.
From reading the airport's downloadable install guide. It looks like it can only be configured by a computer with a wireless connection.
From what I see from other 3rd party wireless router guides. It looks like all configuration is done through the ethernet cable, in combination with using your web browser to log into the wireless router

Yes, if you buy the AirPort Extreme you will be able to do exactly what you are wanting: you will be able to plug your Mac Pro into the AirPort Extreme using an ethernet cable and will be able to access the network wirelessly with your Touch. And yes, you can run AirPort Utility wirelessly and wired, so you will be able to set it up with your Mac Pro even though you don't have a wireless card.

  • Can an original Airport card connect to an Airport Extreme base station

I have an old iBook G3 10.3.9 with an original Airport card (System Profile says "Wireless Card Firmware Version: 8.70"). This computer/airport card connects fine with an old Airport Graphite.
But it will not connect with my main Airport Extreme 802.11n (1st Generation), running in 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) mode. This Airport is using WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security. This Airport Extreme works fine with my other computers and devices.
Does anybody know, offhand, whether it is just a setting, or is this completely unworkable?
Thanks in advance for any input.

I cannot remember all the details regarding the older iBooks, but suspect that the wireless card and possibly the operating system that you are using on the iBook cannot support WPA/WPA2 wireless encryption.
    As a test....
Temporarily turn off the wireless security on the 1st Gen AirPort Extreme, then see if the iBook can connect to the wireless network that way.
If it can, this tells you that the wireless is at least working on the iBook....but it cannot connect to the WPA/WPA2 network.
The solution might be to use a USB wireless adapter that can handle the higher encryption levels, or connect the iBook using Ethernet.
If the iBook still cannot connect when security is disabled during the test, then the iBook has additional issues that you may or may not wish to pursue.

  • Extreme not working as good as my old airport card?

Hi all. I just bought a new iMac 24" yesterday and I'm having some internet issues.
I have free internet service in my building. Usually you connect to the signal, and then it brings up a web page where you enter login info to gain access to outside websites. I was using a G4 tower with the original airport card, and didnt have any issues with this.
Now with my new iMac, I can connect to the service but the speed lags so much that it's literally slower than 56k dialup. I know nothing is wrong with the building's equipment, as I signed onto it with my laptop and it's just as fast as usual.
I know the airport card in the iMac is a newer version than the original one I had in the G4....but shouldnt that make it better?
Is there a simple fix to this? I just cant figure this one out.
    thanks in advance.
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

ALL the computers will run on the network at the
speed of the router. The new intel Mac should not be
SLOWER than any other Mac on the same network when
surfing the net - it should have the same speed -
currently the G4 has a good speed but the intel Mac
has the speed of a dial up - the question was 'why is
the intel mac slower than the G4 on the SAME network
    - you missed the point
I'm not looking to take sides, as I appreciate any input on this....however, this is more about what my question is in regards to.
If my new iMac ran at the slower of a high speed internet connection, I would be fine with that...however, it's running at an unreasonable speed which at times even seems slower than 56k..way slower. I feel that it's just strange that my G4 tower with the original airport card (not even an extreme) runs 50 times faster on the net than my new one...

  • OS X 10.2 w/ Airport Card Connecting to Extreme Base Station

    Hey--
I'm on a G3 Powerbook (w/Firewire) running OS X 10.2 and I installed an Airport Card and I'm trying to connect to a new Extreme Base Station-- and PB can't see the Base station in the Airport Utility. Although my PB does receive the signal from the base station.
    I've tried:
    - Resetting the base station
    - Loaded Airport 2.1.1 software update
    - a million configurations
    - yelling at it...
The airport card does work, because it connected on another wireless system.
Can someone help me with the definative fix?
    Mike

Welcome to the discussion area, stacidesign!
First, you have verified that the PC can connect to another wireless network, correct? If it can, then that tells you that the wireless card is functioning correctly.
You'll have better luck connecting to a newer wireless router if you are able to update the PC to Windows XP SP3. Have you tried this?
It's also possible that the wireless card in the PC can connect to a 802.11 "b" or "g" network, but not to an "n" network. To check that out, you need to use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to make a change in the radio mode of the AirPort Extreme.
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Radio Mode selection box
Write down your current settings so you can return to them later if needed
    Select this Radio Mode...+802.11n only (5 GHz) -- 802.11 b/g+
Keep the Wireless Security set to "None" temporarily
Update to save changes and allow 30-40 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart
    Restart the PC
See if the PC can connect now
Please post back on your results

  • Airport Card vs. Airport Extreme in DVI TiBook

    All,
Have a 1 ghz TiBook. Need to know if I can swap the AirPort card for an AirPort Extreme. Are there any issus about which I should know?
    Thanks much.
iBook dual USB 600mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi, Clifton. One issue you need to know about is that an Airport card will fit, but an Airport Extreme card won't — you can't use one in any Tibook.
You can, however, use a third-party CardBus wireless card such as Sonnet's Aria Extreme or any of these MacWireless cards to gain 802.11g ("Extreme") speed for data sharing over a wireless local-area network. In web browsing, you won't see any difference between standard Airport speed and Extreme speed.
