Airport Extreme & Airport Disk - How to See on VPN?

I use VPN to access my office network when traveling. On the network is a new Airport Extreme, with a disk attached.
The disk is of course visible and mountable when in the office.
However when logged in via VPN, I cannot see or find the disk anywhere.
Any suggestions?

What VPN and what version # of the VPN client do
you
have?
Using the VPN client in Apple Internet Connect (L2TP)
I am assuming you can connect through the VPN, but you cannot see the disk, right?
If that is the case, how are you trying to access the disk? Through the finder?
Also, did you "Allow configuration over the WAN port" on the Airport Utility Base Station screen?

  • AirPort Disks - how do I show them in Menu Bar and Mount them

I have two hard drives connected, through a USB hub, to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. The AirPort Disk Utility has options to "+Automatically discover AirPort Disks+" and +"Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar+". I have checked both options.
Neither of my Base Station-connected disks shows up in the menu bar, and neither is automatically connected. They both appear in Airport Utility. They do not appear in Disk Utility.
I cannot figure out how to connect to/mount these disks.
    Thanks for any help.

I think you are describing a feature of the Airport Disk Utility.
I stopped using this when Leopard came out.
Instead I have my airport shared director in the finder sidebar.
Click on it ... and it mounts.

What do I do to make it work?
    THANKS!!!

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme Airport Disk as Central Media Storage when I have Directv, Windows and Mac needing access?

I have an always on PC in my living room, but I want the macbook pro to have the same media without taking up the space.  iTunes Shared lacks the sorting features of having the library directly associated.  What I want to do is setup a hard drive on my AEBS to house all my media.
I have a 120GB SSD on my PC in the LR. (with an 80GB drive I may put with it for extra space if needed)
    A 250GB MBP
    A 2TB drive (installed in a USB/eSATA enclosure)
    A 1TB drive
    A 500GB usb WD Passport
I use iTunes for Movies, Music, Podcasts
    I use Picasa for Pictures
I want to house these large libraries on the AEBS Airport Disk and have the MBP and PC access the media.  I ideally want iTunes to identify that as the iTunes Media Library for both the MBP and PC.  I haven't found a good run down of how this would work.  Especially since I want to make sure Directv can access the media as well as the PC and MBP.
I will store all my media on the 2TB, I will use the 1TB to backup all the media in a safe, and the 500GB I want to split for Time Machine and Windows backup.  With all my media off those drives, 500GB should be enough space to keep backups for a while to restore programs and what not from.
    Thanks for any help.

You may want to revisit your strategy to using an AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups and that is because Apple does not support this. If your backups are critical to you, then I would strongly recommend that you reconsider using another destination source option.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Airport Extreme / USB Disk - please help!

I have an Airport Extreme which is connected to my PC running Vista, and provides wireless access to my iMac.
Recently bought a new 2TB external hard drive. Partitioned it 3 ways - one partition was set up as HFS+ to back up my Mac using Time Machine, the other two partitions were set up as FAT32 to back up the PC and provide additional storage that would be accessible to both.
After formatting, connected to the Airport extreme, and was able to see all 3 partitions of the drive listed. Set it up to enable file sharing secured with accounts. Was able to get the Mac to connect to the drive and run Time Machine flawlessly over wireless. However, whenever I access the other disks through the PC, it is intolerably slow, with most attempts to move files onto the disk failing or timing out. Not sure what might be wrong - tried turning off Windows Firewall, but that doesn't help. Tried all different disk security settings too. Really want to be able to use this disk on both the PC and the MAC without having to disconnect from my network and hook it up directly. can anyone offer some advice or suggestions as to how I can get Windows to play nice with the disk connected to Airport?

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
This forum, and the Time Machine forums, have many, many posts about it working for some number of days, weeks, or even months, then the backups suddenly turn up corrupted, often beyond repair.

  • Airport Disk Utility Doesn't See External Drive, But Airport Utility Does?

Hey! I am a recent Apple convert and just got a brand new MacBook and Airport Extreme. I am trying to get my Maxtor OneTouch 320GB HDD to work with the Extreme, but to no avail. The Airport Utility sees my HDD, but the Airport Disk Utility doesn't? Any hints/tips on how to fix this problem? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

All I can think of is that the drive is formatted in NTFS which I have heard cannot be read by the AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station), but I am confirming this right now in a different message. If you can copy the files, format your drive in HFS+(the Mac's standard file system), then reload the files. See if it works and reply back.

  • Airport Extreme USB Disk Access

Airport Extreme 5th Generation with a 2TB SATA drive in a powered enclosure attached via USB.
When attaching the drive/enclosure to my 2011 MBP, I can read/write to it without issues.  The drive is formatted as a single NFS+ partition.
When I attach it to the Extreme via USB and then launch the Airport Utility (5.5.3) and click Manual Setup, it times out trying to retrieving the configuration settings.
The Extreme's light is green throughout this process, unless I unplug/replug the router.  When it comes back up the light is flashing yellow and Airport says to connect the drive to a computer to repair it.  Doing so yields the drive works fine.
If I unplug the drive from USB and re-try the Airport utility, I can immediately access the Manual Setup feature, even without rebooting the Extreme.
I've also tried the 'Configure Other' option in Airport and typing the address manually, but that does not work.
Ive read many threads similar to this, but none exactly like it and none with a definitive solution.
Thoughts/suggestions?  Any other information I can provide about setup or what Im seeing?
    Thanks everyone.

Assuming that you have in fact set up your AEBS correctly and that AirPort disk is enabled, you should be able to connect to it several ways. The simplest way is to launch the AirPort Disk Utility and tell it to auto-mount the drive whenever you are connected to your AEBS. If you are like me, however, and don't like to have your external hard drive mounted all the time, then you can manually mount it by navigating to "Network" in the Finder, selecting your base station, and clicking the "Connect" button. You should then be presented with a list of the hard drives connected to your AEBS which you can select from and mount.

  • Basic problem with connecting to disk via Airport Extreme - No Disks Found

I've a Lacie BigDisk (500GB) which connects fine via USB or firewire directly to my Macs (HFS). When I plug it into the AirPort Extreme, the Airport Utility shows the disk as connected, and I've ticked File Sharing, with "Secure Shared Disks" set to "With base station password".
The AirPort Disk Utility is set to Automatically Discover AirPort disks and to Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar. It sees the Airport Extreme, and the action is set to "Connect with Password".
When I close the AirPort Disk Utility I can see the disk icon in the top menu bar, and clicking on this provides a menu with (greyed out) "No Disks Found", and the option to "Open Airport Disk Utility..."
Any ideas - it's driving me mad!
    Thanks
    Andrew

I am having the same problem with a Lacie 320 GB HD as well with my AEBS. I can't get it to stay recognized in Leopard. I have gotten it to work but only for 10 minutes then I have to unplug and start over. I know that it works fine in Tiger but I am having troubles with my drive "disappearing" with Leopard. From what I can tell others have had this problem but I am not finding a solution. Some have said going back to 7.1.1 works however my AEBS is 2 months old and the oldest firmware it has in the airport utility is 7.2. I have also found old versions on the apple website most look for an intel chipset which I do not have I am running a powerbook G4, also my friend on a new MacbookPro couldn't get them to work at all. Air disk is an amazing concept when am I going to be able to use it?

  • Windows can't find AirPort Extreme Hard Disk

I just moved and am trying to set up my wireless network again. I have my AirPort Extreme hooked into my router and my external hard drive hooked into the AirPort. My Macbook Pro can see the hard drive and access it without any problems but my Windows machine, which is running XP and is wired into an AirPort Express, cannot seem to access the hard drive. Is there a trick to this? I remember I got it to work before but I wasn't using the AirPort Express...the Windows computer was wired directly into the Extreme. Any ideas?

My Airdisks are no longer visible in "My Computer", but I can find them (and mount them) from "My Network Places". Mabey a 7.4 thing? I have never set up a windows workgroup, just PnP'd, and everything worked.
Make sure you have airport disk utility (for Windows) installed also, but if your network worked before, I assume you have.

  • Airport Utility doesn't see functioning Airport Extreme Base Station

I have an Extreme (n) Base Station which serves as a WDS main with one relay Express and one remote Express. All three are functioning properly. Now I want to add a second remote Express paired with the main Extreme. However, Airport Utility doesn't see the Extreme, even when hardwired. So I have no way to add in the Apple ID of the new remote.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Is it necessary to restore default settings on the Extreme and reconfigure EVERYTHING?
    Thanks.

Not yet. Hoping there is some other approach, since if I reset it and then it loses the connection before configuration is complete, I lose the functions that are working now.

  • How to get Windows to find airport disk?

I know that I have to get Bonjour to find the airport disk, but the Bonjour that there is for download is just for printer wizard. It won't find the disk, will it? I have no idea how to get Bonjour to find something else besides printer for windows.
And more, when I put a USB hub and add a printer + HD to airport extreme, the power is just enough to run the diskor something. My HD just disappears from the airport extreme. My HD is WD 250GB Passport III Media (FAT32 format)
Pls help. and Thx in adv.
By the way, the windows we use is XP and Bonjour 1.0.5

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is not designed by Apple to provide power to the hard drive.
Apple recommends using a powered hard drive or a powered USB hub to power the hard drive.

  • Airport Disk extremely slow

I recently purchased a Mac Pro (2.66 GHz) with Airport Extreme and an Airport Extreme (802.11n) Base Station. I have OS 10.5.1 installed. I am able to find my USB drive attached to the AEBS as an Airport Disk, but it is extremely slow. I initiated connection to the disk (500GB) about 30 minutes ago, and the files on the disk have yet to show up - the little circle in the Finder window is still spinning. Any suggestions as to what's the problem and how to fix it? Thanks.

Simple answer: There is a problem with the firmware 7.2.1 update. Simple solution is to revert back to firmware 7.1.1. Apple knows about, but is being silent about the problem as of 12/3/2007. (A new firmware update is in the making, but don't hold your breath) The issue is still there with Leopard, so don't look to the new cat for a fix. I found the following info in a different thread and now my airport disks works perfectly again.
I started having this issue right after the firmware update 7.2.1
I went back to the firmware update 7.1.1 and all is fine now my airport disks are working normal
to change the firmware update go to
    Airport utility
    select manual setup
    go to summary
Click directly on the word "version" and change it to 7.1.1
