Airport Extreme, Airport Express network extending not working

I have had the Airport Extreme base statin for a while now and have had it running fine on my two computers, ones a Macbook Pro and the other is a Sony laptop. My brother recently moved in with me and he has not been getting a good enough signal to run his computer off the extreme. We bought the Airport Express to be an extender of the network. I have tried about every configuration in setting it up but for some reason his computer does not want to work. He is also using a Sony, but an older Sony with Xp and no Wireless Card, so he is using a Wireless USB adapter. I can set everything up, everything is Green and he still can't use the network, what is even more weird is that his computer wont even see the Airports in Airport Utility. Any ideas on what to do next?

I am pretty sure that it does. He can get the signal and access the internet, every once and a while, the other night it worked for an hour straight before it stopped working and hasn't worked since. I am about to take back the USB wireless adapter and try something else. I am so frustrated because he wont get off my back.

  • Airport Express 802.11n - not working at all!

I have had some trouble with my Airport express. Nothing works. I have tried to hard reset and factory default reset but nothing happens. It's only blinking yellow, and if i put a ethernet cable into it it turns green, but it still not showing in either airport (wireless) or at the airport utility. I have checked with both my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro.
I also have a Airport extreme and i tried to expand the network wirelessly when i had the express up and running, but when it restarted it self it didn't show up nowhere.
Can someone help me out here?

After a factory default reset, the AirPort Express is broadcasting a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
If you are tying to configure the Express using wireless, you need to make sure that your Mac is logged on to this network first, before you open AirPort Utility.
It's also possible to connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express and then open AirPort Utility. Once the Express has been configured an updated, you can remove the Ethernet cable.

  • AirTunes / Airport Express / Windows XP not working together

Here's the issue. I have two PCs available to me; a laptop from work that is tightly locked down by our paranoid IT dept, and a family desktop that has the iTunes library within it. I purchased airport express so that I could stream to my stereo. The laptop does not have iTunes on it, the IT dept having cunningly deployed some way of blocking its install. They did not, however, block airport utility.
Both computers connect happily over wireless to Verizon FiOs and on into the wider world.
    1) The laptop's airport utility will happily locate and allow configuration of the express unit.
    2) The desktop unit, however, does not find the airport express at all finding no apple wireless devices. However, knowing from the laptop (and from direct to the fios router's network map utility) I can tell airport utility to "configure other" supplying the express' IP address and p/w. Then it finds it and can configure away until I hit the update button. It then can find it no longer until I configure other again.
The point is, iTunes / air Tunes, hosted on the same desktop, displays, I suspect, similar behavior. It never finds the "speakers".
I have tried switching off Norton's firewall altogether, the windows firewall altogether, going w/o any WEP or WPA without luck. Also, I have tried configuring the unit as first as a "joining an existing wireless network", and, second, as it own new wireless network again without avail.
I have spent 4 hrs with Apple support and we thought we had it licked; the speakers appeared briefly after switching to a "bridge" connection share mode. The speakers duly showed up. Letting the gentleman go off the phone in triumph, I stupidly neglected to test the connection from iTunes through to the amp and ran into the error code 15000. Trying some of the ideas in these and other forums to beat that then led me back to square one, never seeing the much anticipated speakers again.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks much!

I detected a problem with Airport+iTunes in Vista and some XP machines.
I have 3 machines: Lenovo 3000 N200 Vista, Compaq nx9010 XP and Asus EEE Top XP.
On the Compaq, APutil and iTunes perform flawlessly 100% of the time. However, on the Lenovo and the Asus, ApUtil doesn´t detect my 2 Airport Express, and iTunes will drop the connection after 30-60 minutes. Then I have to restart iTunes in order that it "sees" my Airports again.
At first, I thought it was a problem with Vista. Later, as it happened on my Asus XP, I thought it was a hardware/driver compatibility problem. Then I decided to make some experiments.......
I found that at startup, 2 processes are activated: iTuneshelper and APAgent.
I cancelled both of them. Voila ! Suddenly APUtil detects my Airports, and no more dropped connections in iTunes !!!!!
Now, it remains still unanswered to me: Why did the problem not happen on my Compaq ???

  • Airport Express and Airtunes not working

Hi all. I have a Digital Audio G4. I've been able to use my G4 with iTunes and my Airport Express for quite a while. All of sudden iTunes no longer sees it. The Airport Admin Utility doesn't see it either. But I can still connect to the internet with it. What makes this even weirder is, I also have a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has no problem seeing the Airport Express in the Airport Admin Utility and in iTunes.
Any Help you can give is much appreciated.

I can't offer any help. I am having the same problem except I have an Airport Extreme with the Airport Express acting as an extender. The only thing that works for me is unplugging the Airport Express and plugging it back in. Sometimes it is fine the entire day. Other times I have to do this multiple times throughout the day. I don't think this is a good, long-term solution. Any help anyone?

  • Airport Express + iTunes 10 not working with Airtunes, but 2nd Airport does

    Hey,
at first I have to excuse myself for my English, i come from Germany.
I looked around in the topics but i didn't find anything that helped me.
I own 2 Airport Express stations since nearly a year.
One of it creates a Wi-Fi network and is connected to a switch, which is connected to the internet.
The other Airport Express is set up as repeater and everything works fine, even Airtunes.
But then i noticed, that the Wi-Fi creating one was not able to work with Airtunes, which it was some weeks ago. I think this has something to do with iTunes 10. The other Airport works well with Airtunes with the same Macbook and speakers.
So I made a new set up on the Wi-Fi Airport, because some guys reported, that the problem would disappear then, but it didn't.
But I wondered why my iPhone 4 is now abled to play music via Airtunes with the new iOS 4.2.1 on the "broken" Airport, because my mac was not abled to do so and I thought of returning it to the Apple Store.
So how do i get this thing running again? I would like to use both of the Airports to listen to music in different rooms with my Macbook.
I would be glad for any help, thanks in advance
    TheShima

    @TheShima,
First open up the airport utility and see if both AE's show up. If not:
This would be my guess, unplug them both for 10 seconds, plug the network creating one back into the wall, them plug the second one back in after the first has a green light. If that doesn't work, "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Finally if that doesn't work reset them, recreate the network reviewing the the advanced settings in "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Does anyone know how to get movie audio to play through the airport express? I really want this to exist my wife's laptop speakers are awful and I would love to have the audio streamed to my airport express.

  • Wired printer on an airport express from laptop not working

    Hi,
Bougth an aiport express 2 weeks ago to replace a cisco linksys that suddenly stop working, the set up was very easy and wifi network is up and running, some devices are connected to the main network and some have issues doing it, particularly a mac laptop and a windows laptop, I created a guess network for these devices to access internet and that solved the problem however those two computers are the ones that need to print and because they are on the guess network sounds like that is not possible.
The lan port IP address on the airport is 10.0.1.1 so I assigned that IP address to the printer but somehow it doesnt work.
I had been disable and enable the credentials on the windows laptop but I'm kind of loss here.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Although your post does not mention how the scanner is connected, my guess would be that you have it connected to the USB port on the AirPort Express. Is that correct?
If yes, unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express does just what Apple says it will do.....print. Other advanced functions like copy, scan, maintenance, etc are not supported.
If you need to scan a document, you will need to connect the scanner directly to your computer.

  • Airport Express network extender n mode

Hello, I have a little problem with my Airport Express (1 gen) used as network extender. I had set my AirPort Extreme on 5 ghz only n mode and 2,4 ghz only n mode, but on airport express I can't set (and see) this mode. I have windows 7. Sorry for my bad English! Hope you can help me :)

You cannot change the Radio Mode or Channels on the extending base station as these would be controlled by the base station that you would be extending.
In this case, you may have to relocate the Express (closer) to the Extreme to have it extend the Extreme's 5 GHz network. Otherwise, it will most likely, just extend the 2.4 GHz radiio only.

  • Apple airport express wireless printing not working on Windows

I have installed the Airport Utility v 5.5.3 and Bonjour Printer Wizard on my Windows XP (SP3) machine. I have successfully set up the router, but am unable to print wirelessly. In the utility, I see my printer and have selected the checkbox Share printers over WAN. I have the driver printers installed on a Windows laptop, but am unsuccessful printing from the laptop.
I read somewhere that I need to set the Internet > Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode). I did that and then got the following error and then can't connect to the internet via the router at all:
An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6753.
I have tried setting up Bridge Mode several times and ensured my virus protection and firewall were disabled, but always the same results, so I reset my router and am back to using the Internet > Connection Sharing option of Share a public IP address.
The whole reason I bought this router is because it is supposed to be easy for wireless printing, but this has been far from easy to set up. So frustrating. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I have Bonjour Print Services installed. I thought I had to select Share printers over WAN for some reason. Just now I deselected this setting, updated the utility and wireless printing still does not work .

  • Airport Express 6.2 not working with PPPoE

This is strange. I've got an ADSL connection and I can get it working perfectly happily directly connected to an iBook, a Mac mini and even a Dos machine (running XP). However I get a 'connection refused' in the log of the Airport Express.
I've got it to the highest level of logging (7 - Debug), but I can't get any more information as to why it fails to log on. I've tried entering both the password and user ID many times in case I mistyped them, but I can't seem to get away from this.
    Any sugggestions gratefully received

I don't think that PPPoE just became available with the latest firmware version for the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), but you may want to consider upgrading to v6.3 to see if it solves the problem you're having.

  • Network Extender Not Working - AGAIN!!!

Hello - our extender has been down for over 24 hours. Like everyone else and every other time before that this has happened (more and more frequently) I have disconnected and rebooted all routers and modems on my system. It is not my extender. Nothing has changed. by chance is there an outage somewhere???

        Hi Pharris,
Yikes! Frequent disconnects are no good! Its important to have properly work equipment at all times. Let's get this fixed. Disconnect the power supply from the Network Extender for 30 seconds then reconnect the power supply. Note: Allow up to 20 minutes for the Network Extender to complete the startup sequence and detect both its connections and communications. Next, Ensure the GPS antenna is connected. Keep me posted!

  • HT4259 Q: Can I use an older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme network

Puzzled at set up of my new Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme network. Just trying to increase range. [Extreme works fine.]

We are going to need a bit more info in order to help.
Do you know if your AirPort Extreme is a newer dual band model?  Check the Model Number on the bottom of the device if you are not sure.
Are you still using the OS X 10.6.8 operating system on your Mac as your profile indicates?
If no, what operating system are you now using?

  • Airport Extreme with Airport Express as extender. It doesn't "just work".

Just installed the airport extreme base station with an Airport Express for extending the network with a home network that includes a Windows XP desktop and a MBPro. I set everything up with the MBP. My goal was to stop all the resetting I had to do with the Linksys system. The XP is near the cable modem so I plug that into the extreme directly with ethernet. The extreme is plugged into the cable modem. My MacBook Pro I connect wirelessly into the internet from about 60 feet away wirelessly (the Express works as an extender to boost the signal). It all works fine for a few minutes, then if I have to close the MBP for a few minutes, when I come back, I still have a "5 bar" signal, but the MBP won't connect to the internet. When I look at the network settings, I keep getting this error:
"Airport is connected to the network ("my network name"). AirPort has a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet".
I have a cable moden with dynamic IP addresses. I've set everything to "automatic" and still have this problem. I think when the IP adress changes, my home network dies. It is still live with 5 bars but no internet connection. I paid $300 for a router and an extender because they were Apple products, but, ****, I almost can't even work anymore.
I guess the core of my question is, why can't I keep internet connection after I close the lid on the MBP or shut off the machine for a few minutes?
    Thanks for any input.

I have a network with 2 airport extremes (the old round one and the new gigabit ethernet) and an airport express. I have seen this issue while I was setting up the network. From what you wrote, I am guessing you have the following issue:
You have 2 airports configured with the same network name and password, but your WDS is not setup corretly, hence you think it is connecting to the airport with modem attached, but it is in fact connecting to your other airport with no modem attached (hence the self assigned IP). What is happening in fact is that you have 2 seperate networks with identical names. If that is the case, you should only see one airport at a time when you open the airport utility app.
If that is in fact your problem, you have to make sure to set the main airport as WDS main and enter the MAC address for the remote base station and click update, while it is updating, rescan and the other base station will show up. set that one up as WDS remote, and enter the MAC address for the main base station, and click update. Once the update is done and both base stations have restarted, your networks will be joined and you should see them both appear in the airport utility.

  • I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it an additonal 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Apple's instructions to do what you want are here:
It will often help to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express for the setup. Once the Express is configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location.

Although an AirPort Extreme is shown as the extending device in the example, the setup for an AirPort Express is exactly the same
