Airport extreme + Airport express WDS Windows only problem

Hi,
I bought an airport extrem to replace my Belkin and redesign my network@home.
The airport extrem give Internet/ethernet linked to a Linux PC, and eyehome. He also gives Internet to a macmini, a powerbook, and a macbookpro.
I had an airport express which gives me airtunes before, I tried to use it for a WDS.
It seems to work fine if I go in the studio near my house with the MBP > I see my network, connect and surf fine.
But, I put it in WDS to extend the network for a (sh#*$€ù£) PC under windows for my son who loves NWN2...
This Pc had a belkin wifi usb adapter which works slightly well before; Here the Belkin utility say that the signal to my network is really strong but he don't want to connect. He gets a local IP 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
If I use the airport utility tool on the pc to connect the airport express : it doesn't see anything ; no network, no airport express.
When I use the MBP with the airport utility tool I can see that the password doesn't have 13 digit likes the one I give but it seems to have 26 characters under the password.
So I think that it convert it in the wep128 key but I don't know how to get it in clear! (he do it again when I try to put the only password). I looked @ my keychain but it only have the clear password which I Know..of course
Do you have suggestions to get this key in clear?
MBP, MM, PWBK & Pc   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well! I've got it
with the airport utilities > clic to "configure" BUT have look @ the menu and not the visual menu.
In French (sorry) : Borne d'acces > mot de passe equivalent du réseau : select
You will see the password (of course you know it before) BUT also : the hexadecimal code.
I put this hexadecimal number in the pc authentification tool and it works fine : I have my IP, and I could go to the internet with it.

  • Can't Autodetect AirPort Express in Windows

I've just recently started being unable to autodetect my AirPort express from Windows machines. I use it primarily as an AirPlay speaker, but applications such as iTunes (for Windows), Airfoil, and the AirPort Utility can't see it. This seems to be limited to Windows machines; iTunes on the Mac can see and play to it just fine, as can an iPhone. It's just my two Windows 8 machines that can't see it -- one of them used to be able to, the other I just tried installing the AirPort Utility on today. The AirPort Utility can be used to manually configure the AirPort Express when given its IP, just can't find it automatically. Tried disabling the Windows Firewall; tried repairing and uninstalling/reinstalling Bonjour (current version is 3.0.0.10).
Not really sure where else to go from here -- between everything that is/isn't working it seems like the only possible cause is some issue with Bonjour for Windows. This problem cropped up within the past month or so -- I don't use AirPlay from my Windows box all that often -- which looks like it would roughly correspond with Bonjour v3.0.0.10 coming out.
Any ideas? I want to try going back to Bonjour v3.0.0.2 but I've been striking out so far finding a download for it.

Hi Bob, thanks for stick with me on this. I did get it and I'll share some points here for those that may be having the same issue. My opinions: Extreme find Express is a bit finicky. Reason even though I had it plugged directly into the Extreme via ethernet cable, sometimes it saw it sometimes not. The thing I found the best to do is unplug the express, unplug the ether cable, plug it all back in and press the hard reset. I had to do it a couple of times until it worked and I only new to keep trying from some other posts outside of this support forum. One of the most iportant things here is what Bob says, you must know your Extreme security level and the password. Also, its a bit peculiar because once your Express shows up in Airport Utility and you are following the 'wizard' it provides a drop-down to select a wireless network to join. At this point I expected to see the wireless network but its not there. I had to type it in. Lastly is not clear why you would choose join a network vs extend a newtwork - could use some docs on that. Hope this helps others.

  • Airport Express and Windows Vista

I cannot get the Airport Express software to recognize the Airport Express in Windows Vista. I installed the software and the setup assistant doesn't even show up. Any recommendations?

    Ah Ha!
I have been waiting patiently for the last few weeks for posts to come up on this subject.
I have had the same problems. My new samsung sets up a wireless contection with the aiport wonderfully but as airport admin assistant does not install with the 4.2 version I cannot configure hence set a password or any security. It cannot be done through utility as it does not recognise the airport as being there.
A long sequence of phone calls with a lady from apple confirmed they are aware of the problem. Apparently the 5.1 version does install in vista (although its existance maybe a myth).
The funny thing is that you cannot tell what version is in the box. The staff in the apple stores do not know either. So I have ended up buying three airports opening the packaging, finding the wrong software and then getting a refund. Just like charlie lookig for the golden ticket.
They are of course selling loads of these to PC users and most of these will now be using vista if they have new PC's. So lots should be being returned. A serious problem for their cross platform marketing plan.
Apple! a sticker saying not compatible with vista would have saved me alot of hassel.

  • AirPort Express with PC -- Setup Problems

    Hi
Just wanted to share my experience -- I wasted most of a day getting my AirPort Express network up. Problem was, the setup software assumes that you have a wireless card in your PC. If, like me, you have a simple ethernet connection to a wireless router, then the program apparently has no way of finding the AirPort Express.
After hours of fumbling with suggestions on this forum, I finally found the tech support number and we figured out that I needed to run the setup program on my laptop, which does have a wireless card.
I would STRONGLY encourage Apple to re-write its setup software to recognize this very common hardware configuration and work with it, lest more customers waste more of their time. I was THIS CLOSE to angrily returning the box. Now that it's up, I really love it, but I almost didn't get there.

I had the same problem as you did with the setup of the AX from a PC connected to the router by Ethernet. I was able to run the setup by using the "Other ..." button at the bottom of the Base Station Chooser and giving it the IP address of the AX.
Does iTunes on the PC connected to the router by Ethernet find the AX? It doesn't for me. It works great from my other 3 PCs that are connected to the network by wireless. Of course, the PC with the problem is the one across the family room from the stereo ...

If the AX is working properly, it should not show up in your list of available networks (since it is "joined" to your router). Have you unplugged and replugged your AX? Unplugged and, after a minute, replugged your router? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router? (if so, disable it to see if the AX works ... it will broadcast its MAC address to the router, and you can add it.) Is your firewall turned on? Turn it off and see if you can access Airtunes. You will have to open a port in your firewall if that is the case.
The AX should have the same network name as your router the wireless tab. When it shows up, what name is it broadcasting?

  • Problems printing via AirPort Express in Windows

    Hi,
I have recently bought an Airport Express base station. I have configured it correctly, with PPPoE, AirTunes and Printer sharing.
I have a mac and a pc connected to Airport Express, and with my mac, the base station works without any problems. My pc (running Windows XP SP2) connects to the internet, but it cannot use the printer feature.
I have installed Bonjour for Windows 3, and when I boot the computer, it recognizes the printer (HP LaserJet 1320) immediately. But after a couple of minutes, it disappears, and the pc can no longer connect directly to the base station nor use the connected Bonjour-printer. Despite this, it is still connected to the internet.
Does anyone have a solution to my problem?

  • Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet) + Airport Express (WDS) = disconnects

I have an Airport Express configured as a WDS, bridging a wired device (a small PC running Linux) to an Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet). Security is enabled (WPA).
Frequently, the Airport Express disconnects from the wireless network and I have to reboot the thing by unplugging it. I have it set up to log to the PC, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the log.
Any guidance? I'd like to hold on to the Express, but I can't if it's acting flakey like this.

More than likely you are experiencing RF interference from other devices operating at 2.4 GHz. You can use a tool like iStumbler to see what other networks are visible in your area. Then you can configure your 2 base stations to use a channel which is as far as possible from the channels used by other networks.

  • Airport Extreme (1354) + Old Airport Express for AirTunes Only

I have the new Airport Extreme released in October 2009 (A1354), and also an old Airport Express released way back in 2004. I don't need to extend my network because I live in a relatively small apartment. Instead, I'd like to use the Airport Express purely for AirTunes. Is this possible without degrading the speed of the WiFi network? Thank you.

set up the old express to join the network provided by the new extreme.
is your extreme a +sim dual band+ type ? if so, you will not notice any degradation in speed. wireless-n capable clients will access the 5 GHz and b/g-clients the 2.4 GHz bands respectively.

  • HT1218 Problem with Airport Express in Windows 7

I am using my one year old Airport Express with my Dell LapTop, now it is on fixed amber light. I did reset it many times but no luck. I cannot see it on my airport utility. I uninstall and downloaded older versions of airport utility but no success.

... now it is on fixed amber light.
Do you mean the light is solid amber, not flashing? If so, that means the Express is never completing its startup sequence. It should start flashing slowly, a minute or two after powering it up.
Try another "hard reset" - press and hold its reset button until the LED flashes rapidly, which should occur within ten seconds. If that is not successful, press and hold the button while you plug in in to power. This usually requires three hands.
On rare occasions persistent and repeated "hard resets" have been known to revive an ailing Express, but that is all you can do. If it still fails to start, bring it to Apple for an evaluation, but they are not going to do anything more than what I just described.

  • Printing to Canon Pixma MP170 on Airport Express from Windows XP

I got a Canon MP170 basically for free with the rebates.
Connected to my Airport Express, installed the drivers on my PowerMac and I can print just fine (I am aware that the scanner will only work when connected directly - which also works fine).
Now I installed the drivers on Windows XP, then added a new printer, selected the Standard TCP/IP port where I had my other printer on the Aiport Express before and changed the printer driver to the Canon MP170. Could not print.
Deleted the port (only managed after deleting the printer(s) defined with it and restarting Windows ...) and created the port from scratch - Standard TCP/IP port, IP address of my Airport Express, device type Generic Network Card, raw port 9100. Won't print.
Anybody managed to get this going?
Thanks in advance and Best Regards,
    alex

  • Airport express and Windows 8 dns error message

I have just purchased a HP windows 8 machine.  It works fine on my old Airport (5 years) wireless, but with the Airport express it does not.  I can connect with CAT5 cable direct.  When I bring up the available connections I see the airport express and pick it, type in the password and it says connected.  Next I click on IE and I get the error message "This page can't be displayed"  I run the fix connection problems and it says "Your DNS server might be unavailable".  Check list of items.
    1.  Windows 8 wireless machine works fine on old Airport
    2.  Windows 8 direct connect works fine on Airport Express amd old Airport
    3.  Windows 7 wireless machine works fine on both old Airport and Airport Express
I am using the default settings on the Airport express except password is being used.
    Windows 8 >>>wireless>>>Airport Express>>>router
    As suggestions?

What are the model numbers of both your Extreme and Express base stations? Do you have them configured for a 802.11n (extended) or 802.11g (WDS) Wi-Fi network?

  • Macbook won't talk to Airport Express WDS remote

I have two new Airport Express 802.11n access points, and an Airport Extreme (802.11n but not the latest model). One of the Expresses is connected to my DSL modem (wired ethernet) and is the 'main' WDS access point. The Extreme is acting as a relay, and the other Express is the WDS remote.
Here's the problem - the WDS network works fine with my Macbook Pro (model ID MacBookPro3,1) and I can use the remote WDS with no problems, but I have an early 2008 Macbook which simply will not connect to the remote express - but it has no problems connecting to either the Extreme or the WDS main Express.
The Airtport card type in my MBPro is "AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)", the card type in the Macbook is "Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.26)". Both laptops can see the same physical networks, and I don't think channel interference is a problem, because I'm on channel 6 and all the other networks I can see are on either channel 1 or 11.
I've tried swapping the two expresses, and that makes no difference. I've also checked that the Macbook can connect to both expresses when they are acting as the WDS main AP - so it appears to be when the express is acting as a remote (via the relay) that I get a problem.
Has anyone seen a similar problem? This configuration sould work, right?

I found a way to get a wireless configuration that serves my purposes. I'd tried swapping the expresses around to see if that helped, and reached a point where my extreme wouldn't extend any network I set up on an express, so I did a reset to factory defaults on both.
Once I'd done that, I created an 802.11n (5GHz) network using one express, and extended it using the extreme. Having done that, both my Macbook and Macbook Pro could pick up the extreme's extended network in the room where I had the second express, so that solved one problem (previously the Pro could see the extreme's network, but the Macbook couldn't - odd, since this is a polycarbonate bodied Macbook, and they normally have better wireless reception).
The only remaining issue was connecting some wired ethernet devices, which is the other reason I wanted the second express functioning as a WDS remote. Turns out that if you just want the express to bridge a wired network to a wireless one, you can do that by having the express join as a client, and enabling wired clients as well - I think that may be new to the 802.11n expresses.
Everything works perfectly now - both laptops have internet connectivity via the extreme and express; the wired devices are bridged onto the wireless network so they can talk to other machines elsewhere in the house, and the setup is much simpler because I'm not having to mess around with WDS details. I'm also hoping that an extended network like this loses less bandwidth than a main/relay/remote setup.
I never did get to the bottom of why the Macbook couldn't talk to the WDS remote - possible a factory reset on all three would also have resolved the problem, but I guess I'll never know now.

  • Trouble printing to Canon ip4200 over Airport Express from Windows XP

I've just spent the last 4 hours trying to get my Dell laptop running XP to print to my Canon ip4200 USB printer connected to my Airport Express. My PowerBook (10.3.4) connected without issue and has been working fine. The XP laptop just refused to print, and the "troubleshooter" was useless. It would print fine over a direct USB connection, but, despite following the directions for connecting an Airport Printer in XP to the letter, it failed to print every time.
I was tearing my hair out in frustration when I eventually discovered this post at macosxhints: "RAW port has changed!" (scroll down thew page a bit):

The default Raw configuration for "Standard TCP/IP Port" was set to 9100. I manaully changed it to 9101 and all works great now.
I don't know where the default of 9100 came from, but this has cost me an entire morning of frustration. GRRRRR!

  • Time Capsule-AirPort Express-WDS not working together

According to everything I've read here, I've configured this properly, but it doesn't seem to be working. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this I would greatly appreciate it.
I have a new Time Capsule acting as my main wireless base station; it has a manually-configured static IP address, is plugged into my Verizon FIOS router, and is set to distribute IP addresses over wireless using DHCP. I have it set to run a 5 GHz network in addition to the regular 2.4 GHz network. I have an older AirPort Express that I want to use to extend the range of the 2.4 GHz network (the Express can only do 802.11b/g, not 802.11n), in part because we have some older devices in the house that I don't want to slow down the 802.11n network, and in part because the 802.11b/g signal doesn't reach all parts of the house very strongly. So I told the Time Capsule to make its network extendable, told the AirPort Express to participate in a WDS network as a WDS relay, and entered the MAC address of the Time Capsule's 2.4GHz network as the WDS main. Result: flashing amber light on the AirPort Express, which no longer shows up in the AirPort Utility; I had to do a hard reset in order to get the Express back (and then it had to be reconfigured again, of course). At the moment I have it just joining my wireless network, and that works -- green light -- but of course doesn't allow the Express to extend the range of the wireless network.
What am I doing wrong here?

Before there was dual band, we always told users that if they used WDS, the entire network would revert to "g", even if the Time Capsule, AirPort Express, etc were capable of "n" performance.
Your findings seem to confirm that this happens with a dual band as well.
I think it's well worth it to get the AirPort Express 802.11n. Then you can reconfigure the Time Capsule back to "Create a wireless network" and check the box to "Allow this network to be extended"
The Express"n" would then be configured to "Extend a wireless network". I use this setup and would highly recommend it. There may be a slight bandwidth loss due to overhead, but the performance is light years ahead of WDS.
If you are using the same network name for both bands on the Time Capsule, then I believe by default the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz "n", "g" and "b" band. This makes sense for most users since 5 GHz signals do not travel well over distance or penetrate obstructions well.
IF...you want to extend the 5 GHz band, the only way that I know how to do this is click Wireless Network Options on the wireless setup page for the Time Capsule and enable the option to assign a different name for the 5 GHz network.
Then you will have to configure the Express to extend this specific 5 GHz network. I never had much luck extending 5 GHz, and I wanted my iPhone to be able to use the network across the house, so I went with the simpler one network name for both bands and extended the 2.4 GHz network.
If you have a "g" device joining the extended network, it may tend to slow the "n" devices down slightly...when the "g" device is active, but it won't drag everything down to "g" levels. When the "g" device is not active, "n" devices will run at "n" speeds.
BTW, the ethernet port on the AirPort Express is active when you configure it to "extend a wireless network". This can come in handy for hooking up DVD players, etc that need an internet connection for firmware updates and extra features.
Follow up....I tried a very quick reconfiguration of my dual band AirPort Extreme (same router that the Time Capsule users) and AirPort Express using the WDS arrangement and everything did indeed drop way down in speed and performance.
Post back if you have questions. Happy to help.

  • Trouble setting up Airport Express and Windows

I am trying to help a friend set up Airport Express to work with her Windows computer. The goal is to use the Airport Express so she can stream iTunes to her stereo system. There is an existing Linksys wireless network. First I tried to connect add the Airport Express to her existing wireless network. I was able to see the base station and I chose to add it to her existing network. I was able to go through all the steps updating the Airport Express. After the base station restarted, the configuration tool couldn't see the base station anymore. In iTunes on her Windows computer, I could see the base station but when I clicked to select the speakers, it wouldn't select.
I reset the Airport Express to factory settings and tried again with the same result.
I reset again and tried using the Airport Express to replace her wireless network and to also stream iTunes. In the configuration app I chose to create a new wireless network. I was able to set up the Airport Express as a wireless network and could connect her Windows laptop to the Internet through the Airport Express. But I had the same problem in iTunes: I could see the speakers in the drop down list, but I couldn't select them.
I've returned everything to how it was (Linksys wireless network).
Can anyone let me know how to make this work?
    Thanks

As I mentioned in my post, I followed the directions exactly. I used the same set of directions in the previous post. At the last step of the set up, the Airport Express restarts. After restarting, I got an error saying the utility could not find the base station. I reset the Airport Express to factory settings and went through the steps again and had the exact same result.
I am using an Airport Express at home with a Linksys router and I had no problem setting it up to join my network. The only difference is that I use a Mac at home. The one I am trying to set up for my friend is with a Windows XP machine.
Has anyone ever had this problem?
