Airport Extreme and Canon Pixma MP610

I recently got a MacBook Pro. I wanted to print wirelessly so I also purchased a new Airport Extreme and Canon Pixma MP610 printer all from the Apple Store. I told the salesperson what I wanted to do and he did not indicate there would be a problem, he said make sure I had the most current printer drivers, which I have done. I tried everything but I am unable to print wirelessly using the USB connection between the Airport and the printer. Can anyone help me? Is this printer compatible with the Airport? This is very frustrating and expensive. I could have just kept my old base station and printer.

I am having the same problem with my MP610... I have connected the printer to the usb port on the AirPort Express and have tried installing various drivers to try and fix the issue but have had no success so far.
My Airport Express is setup correctly (green light) and is found in AirPort Utility... additionally, when I go to System Preferences -> Print & Fax, the printer is there and found wirelessly... yet whenever I try to print I receive a "error number : 306..." in my print queue... also, depending on which driver I use, I receive a "Unable to send 1 bytes of print data! (USB write error)" error message on top of the "error number : 306"... sometimes I also manage to avoid any error messages where the status shows it is 'Printing' but there is nothing being printed...
Now, obviously this is a wireless issue, as the printer works when connected via usb directly to my MacBook Pro...
I contacted Canon Support, and was told that I would not be able to print via any AirPort connection as the printer itself is a "Host Based Printer" and was not designed to support networking and that my only other alternative/option to wireless printing would be to purchase a "USB printer server" that supports IP Address forwarding... (on a side note: does the AirPort Express not support this?)
The whole reason why I purchased AirPort Express was so I could print wirelessly from a regular printer by connecting it to its usb port... and looking at the Airport support page on Apple's website, it clearly doesn't mention anywhere that the printer needs to be network capable or that there would be any compatibility issues with regular printers... After-all, it revolves around the idea that all you need to do is connect the printer to the AirPort via USB and that it will take care of the rest when setup correctly...
So ultimately my question is, has anyone had any success in setting up a wireless connection with their 'Host Based Printer'/ordinary usb printer...? if so, how?!! please describe in detail :P lol
Also is that doesn't work, is there any way I can use the AirPort Express to wirelessly print using an IP Address without having to buy a 'USB print server'?
Sorry about the very long description... any help would be really appreciated!

  • Airport extreme and Canon Pixma IP5000 printing wireless

Has anybody been succesfull in using a Canon Pixma IP5000 to print wirelessly with Aiport extreme (n)? From what I read, my printer is too old? can some one confirm?
    Thanks

I have the set up you mention and I can print wirelessly.
Before you try anything else, reset the printer in preferences. (Right click the printer and select reset printing system.)
Make sure you have the latest driver installed from Canon 4.8.3 (comes with Leopard normally) before hand.
Then turn off your airport. Turn on the printer. Then turn on the airport Extreme n.
Once up and running click add printer.
Your printer should appear in the window as a Bonjour type.
It will search for the latest driver (which you'll have downloaded if necessary).
    Then it should be installed.

  • Can't print with Airport Extreme and Canon MP610

Can anyone suggest a way around this?
I am unable to print using my new Canon MP610 multifunction printer when connected via my Airport Extreme, but I can print when connecting the printer to my computer directly, not using the Airport Extreme. After several hours of frustration, updating drivers and firmware, etc, I contacted Canon and received an email back stating:
    "MP610 is not supported by
Canon with a wireless connection through an Apple Airport. This does
not necessarily mean that it will not work, but we are not able to
    provide configuration and troubleshooting information."
Last summer, my daughter was able to use the same Extreme to print wirelessly using her Mac Book Pro and her Canon MP600 multifunction printer (note - different printer model).
Sounds like Canon isn't saying it won't work, but they cant' help.
If anyone can offer a suggestion to work around this, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Doug

The most comprehensive set of troubleshooting instructions for printing problems involving Airport printers is found at:

It is possible your printer simply cannot be made to work in this manner, and is more often than not a problem with multifunction printers.

  • Airport Extreme and Canon MF4370dn

    Hi,
I'm hoping that someone can help me with a networking issue I'm having.
Here's my current setup. I have Fios. By ethernet, I connected an airport extreme to the Fios router, and put the Extreme into bridge mode. The Extreme created an apple network. In another room, I plugged in an Airport Express, set it to bridge mode, and had it join the existing apple network. Green lights on both Airports.
I had an older Canon Pixma MP530 printer. When I connect it via USB to the Express, all works fine. But when I try to use a Canon MF4370dn printer, it doesn't work. I know that the 4370dn cannot print through the USB port on the back of the Express. Instead, I connected an ethernet cable from the 4370dn to the Express. But the Express does not recognize the printer, and every time I try to print I get an error message.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks very much.
    Ross

+But the Express does not recognize the printer, and every time I try to print I get an error message.+
The Express does not control any printing functions via its ethernet port. You'll need to completely reinstall the ethernet printer again so that it knows where it is on the network. In other words, you'll need to follow the printer manufacturer's setup instructions to configure the device to work on your network using ethernet.

  • Airport Express and Canon Pixma IP4500 wireless printing

    Hello,
I bought an Airport Express and set it up as an additional wireless network at an 5Ghz N mode. It's conneted to a Linksys Wireless router modem/router. Internet connectivity is fine from both iMac 24 and MacBook. Both use OSX 10.5.4.x
Airport is set up via USB with a Canon Pixma IP4500 inkjet. When connected directly to the iMac, it prints fine. When I connect the IP4500 to the Airport Express, I get an Error 300 - basically saying the printer is not responding.
The whole point of the Airport Express was a faster network for both wireless printing and playing iTunes wirelessly from the MacBook.
Any tips on what could be a common problem for this printer?
    Thanks

    I had a similar problem
I had to "add a new printer", so one printer refers to the directly connected printer and the other refers to the printer connected to the airport (bonjour).
    Greetings.

  • Airport Extreme and Canon 5600F scanner

If I plug the Canon 5600F directly into the Macbook Pro it scans perfectly, but the Airport doesn't recognize the scanner when it is plugged in via a USB 2.0 hub. I set the scanner to share over the network. The scanner doesn't have an Ethernet port.
    What am I doing wrong?

Understand the hassle. But, you can't really put this one on Apple as they have no choice but to use the device drivers that other manufacturers supply to them.
At this point, as far as I am aware, there's not a single manufacturer that has written drivers to allow full functionality for all-in-one devices when connected to the USB port on the AirPorts.
Still, you might want to voice your opinion to Apple on this. There's no assurance that that they even read these boards and if enough users ask for a certain feature, perhaps they will incorporate it in the future.

  • Airport Extreme and Canon mp160...

I have my canon mp160 plugged into the back of my airport extreme, but for some reason I cannot print... do any of you have suggestions?
    Thanks!

For the benefit of future users - could you describe how you solved your problem?
Problems like yours can be very difficult to fix, and the solution is sometimes specific to a printer make and model, so any tips you can provide would be very helpful to see.

  • Airport Extreme and Canon Pixima MP830

Hi, I connected a Pixima MP830 to my Airport Extreme. I have a MBP and MacMini and they both print wirelessly without a problem. However, I have tried every trick in the book it would seem in trying to make the printer work wirelessly via Windows.
    - Install Bonjour for Windows and did the install through it
    - Changed the port from 9100 to 9101
    - Updated the firmware
    - stopped and started the printer, Airport, etc. etc.
No luck. It just report 'This document failed to print'
Any one running a Canon MP830 with Airport Extreme?
    Thanks
    AJ

I am sorry, but that is nonsense. The MP830 is networkable.
Google this: MP830 Silex and see what comes up for the Canon eStore.
Besides, I just made a printout of this very page using the MP830 hooked up to my Airport Express, which is connected to my wireless network on Linksys WRT54GL router (w/ WAP2 Personal encryption).
This is on a PC running Windows XP. I haven't tried it with Leopard yet but I cannot think of a reason why this would not work on a Mac. Note that the printing functionality is supported via the Airport Express Base Station (firmware 6.3, Airport Utility 5.2.1), but that the scanning functionality does not work. Faxing IS supported, wireless scanning is the only one feature that does not work. The scanner driver is not able to connect to the printer wirelessly.
This kind of defeats the purpose of making this MP830 the default network printer. Apple's sooo close; it's frustrating that scanning is the one feature not supported by the Airport Express Base Station. The Airport Express Base Station makes the product on offer in the Canon eStore pale by comparison - note the price! Come on Apple, help us fully network our Canon MP830's!

  • Canon Pixma MP610 fails to print and returns a " Stopped - 'Filter' failed" error message.

Hi, I have updated to latest OS and now my Canon Pixma MP610 fails to print and returns a " Stopped - 'Filter' failed" error message.
    I am running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65) on a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac with  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I've done a complete system re-install and also performed a targetted install of just the Canon Drivers - but all to no avail.
The printer is OK with regard ink-levels and is/was working fine. It will print out 'photocopies' independantly of the iMac. Additionally, from within the Print Queue I can view the ink-levels so there are comms between the iMac and the Canon - it's just that 'Print' seems to be off topic.
Can anyone help as I have to get a document out tonight
    Many thanks in advance
    S

Is that device desSystem Preferences - Print & Scan - Right click the printer and select Reset Printing System. DO NOT use any Canon software.
You did not advise how it is connected (USB- Wi-Fi- etc..) so it's a little difficult to assist with so little information.

  • Windows, Mac Non-wireless Mac, Airport Extreme and Printer

I bought a Canon Pixma MP500 printer at the Tice's Corner Apple Store. We wanted to put this in the back of our Airport Extreme and did so. Here is our hook up:
eMac Airport Extreme Cablevision Cable Modem
    Printer
The eMac goes through the ethernet input, and the other ethernet input goes to the cable modem. We have a printer in the back hooked up as well. This Airport Extreme provides wireless security and working WiFi internet to the eMac, a wireless iBook G4 and a wireless HP-Compaq NC6220 Windows XP computer. We have the macs hooked up to printing correctly, just not the HP-Compaq. Thus it is wireless nad connects to our internet interface fine (yes, the wireless switch is on), it is a company computer with a VPN and firewall (that allows for printer installation). Note that the HP-Compaq nc6220 uses Intel ProSet Wireless as its wireless client. I tried installing Bonjour for Windows and the steps in the article in the link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107998and it did not work. Therefore, I cannot wirelessly print on all 3 computers. The main problem is the HP-Compaq. I am out of things to try.
If anyone has any advice, I would apreciate them to post back. Check back soon,

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • IPads, Airport Extreme and Printing

    Hi all,
I bought an Airport Extreme and have plugged a printer into the USB. The instructions imply anything on the Airport network should be able to use the printer.
Both my desktop and laptop Macs can, but I was really surprised to find that our iPads can't see it. It is enabled in Airport, but I haven't done anything with Bonjour.
I've looked through posts on here and it seems that for some reason iPads can't connect to a printer on Airport Extreme... this seems really, really odd!
I have no intention of buying an HP printer, which seems to be the only straightforward option. I tried searching for an oft-mentioned App called "Printopia" but it's no longer on the (Canada) app store.
This really does beggar belief.... it's only printing, for goodness sake! Surely it's just a matter of streaming data to a printer... which the iPad should surely be able to do over the air to the Airport Extreme??
Does anyone have any ideas how I can print from an iPad, without buying another printer?
    All advice appreciated!

    Thanks both.
I didn't think about drivers as I haven't had to install one for Mac for (probably) years! Things all just work when plugged in!
I tried Canon but their software only works with their wireless printers, which doesn't help me.
I didn't realise Printopia works just from a Mac.... in which case I might as well carry on doing what I'm doing now... emailing or synching docs through iTunes and print from the Mac.
Lets hope other printer manufacturer's make AirPrint capable machines soon...

  • Canon Pixma MP610 - Not recognised

Just bought a Canon Pixma MP610 multifunction printer but despite loading the driver that came with it, my Macbook does not recognize it.
I downloaded the latest drivers from the Canon website - but still no joy. When I go into printers and faxes it does not even appear. Any suggestions ?

When you add a Canon inkjet printer queue there is no ability to browse for the printer driver via the Print Using menu. The driver software needs to see the printer on the end of the USB cable to work.
The usual procedure to add the printer is to run the driver software installer first without the printer being connected. Then once the installer has finished and you have restarted the Mac, you can connect the USB cable. When you do this the software often finds the Canon printer and automatically adds it to the printer list. If it doesn't automatically add straight away, you can try to add it via Print & Fax > Add. When you do this I have often found that the printer, after selecting the printer via the Default view, has already been added.
Before attempting to print, you should be adding the printer via Print & Fax. After selecting Add ( + ) the printer should appear in the Default view as a USB device. If after selecting the printer name, the Print Using menu does not automatically change to Canon IJ Printer, then something is wrong with the driver software and generally needs to be reinstalled. Following is my procedure to reinstall the Canon driver software.
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax. Highlight the Canon printer in the Printer list and click the minus ( - ) button. [Since your printer is not installed then you don't have to do this step]
    2. Hold Control key and click in the empty Printers list. Click on Reset Printing System.
    3. Close Print & Fax
    4. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinter folder.
    5. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the Canon driver package file, if one exists. The file name will show Canon MP610 693.pkg. If you are not using the MP210 on this machine, you can delete its package file if it is here also.
    6. Go to Library > Preferences and delete the Canon folder.
    7. Go to HD > Users > Shared > Canon and delete the BJPrinter folder.
    8. Empty the Trash
    9. Unplug the Canon USB cable and restart the Mac
    10. Install the latest version of the Canon driver. Check the Canon web site to ensure you have the latest version.
    11. Once the driver installation is complete, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
    12. Reconnect the Canon USB cable. Then open Print & Fax and see if the Canon printer is listed. If it is, try a test print.
    13. If the printer is not listed, click the plus ( + ) button.
    14. Select the Default view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
    15. Click Add to add the printer.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.
