Airport extreme and external hd

I have a western digital hd connected to my airport extreme via usb hub. I can access it fine from my powerbook. However if I try to connect to it remotely no drives appear. I've looked at several posts in the forums and even a pdf guide, but nothing has seemed to work. I can't even gain guest access. Any insight?
Under Disks - I have the disk set up for file sharing with accounts, and guest access is set to read only. Share disks over ethernet WAN port is checked. Advertise disks globally using bonjour is checked.
Under Advanced - I have use wide-area host name checked under the bonjour settings. Hostname - not sure what to put here, or if it matters. I know something has to be here. Right now it's the same name as my external hd that I have given under the airport disk utility. Domain is the same as under internet. I didn't put anything under name and password because it didn't seem to matter. Is this supposed to reflect an existing name and password, if so which one?
I'll post any other settings that are requested. Thanks in advance!

I have a similar problem. I have a relatively small external HD I am using to experiment with TimeMachine. Connected to the iMac is works OK so far. Connecting it to the USB port on the Extreme shows the device in Airport Utility but no where else. Not even in the Airport Disk Utility. I went to a store and spoke to a "genius" who told me the to downgrade my firmware in the Airport Extreme to 7.1.1 as there is a known issue with 7.2.1 which is what my Airport is running. You can do this by going into Airport utility selecting the preference and when clicking the update firmware option also hold down the OPTION key. This will present you with a menu of firmwares to install. I have tried this but at the moment it is only allowing me to select 7.2 or 7.2.1 the 7.1.1 remains illusive. I've been on the Apple web site to see if I could manually download the 7.1.1 but I can't seem to see it yet. Doing a search for airport gives you a lot of product and advertising information, and little actual support.

  • Help With Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and I couldn't have been happier. I have attached my western digital external hard drive, but I have run into a slight problem/dilemma which I'm hoping someone who is apple savvy can help me out.
I live in a house with a couple of other guys and so I put all of my movies and media onto the hard drive so we can stream it throughout the house, but how do I make sure that someone won't accidently delete the files (The copies on the hard drive are the only ones I have)? I have tried to right click "get info" and change the sharing & permissions properties on the folders that I don't want deleted, but it doesn't save the changes or even allow me to select another option other than Read & Write. I formated the hard drive with the disk utility before I connected it to the AirPort so I know that it has nothing to do with the format of the drive. I also tried to create different user accounts for each roomate so that they could view the files (Read Only) but I get an error message explaining that if I continue, the contents of the hard drive will not be accessible. I'm sure its something simple but I'm obviously missing it.
    Thanks!

Airport Utility under Disks/File Sharing has guest access rights.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut

  • Airport Extreme and External USB HDD

I've seen quite a few posts on the topic but no real fixes. I have a 21.5" iMac utilizing an dual-band Airport Extreme Base Statation for networking. I also have a 1TB Toshiba USB external hard drive. Formatted for Mac OS journaled. I plug the drive into the iMac and, after displaying "this drive is not recognized by the Mac" message, it mounts and recognizes the drive and allows me to perform a time machine backup. After awhile the drive disappears and will not show up again until it is power cycled. Annoying enough...but it gets worse.
I tried to plug the hard drive into the AEBS to allow it to be used by others in the household...it shows up in the Airport Utility, I can name it, it shows up in Finder, but when I actually try to use it....nothing. Nothing will transfer to it.
HELP! Anyone have any ideas on this. It's been maddeningly frustrating and I actually put the problem aside for the last six months becasue I couldn't get it to work reliabily. But, I paid money for the HD and I'd like to use it for something.

    Welcome to the discussions!

Unfortunately, there really are no fixes. The answer for your issue is that Apple has not ever supported Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. You might want to refer to the Apple support documents below concerning this.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038

If you want to use Time Machine for backups, you'll need to connect the drive directly to your computer.

  • Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive. Backup over WAN?

    Hi
I'm new to Mac's and just got a macbook air and a airport extreme.  I connected my external hard (toshiba) drive to the AE and my computer will recognize it, but when I try to connect to it using Time Machine my external hard drive is not recognized as a device that I can backup to over my WAN.  I'm not sure if this is possible, but I would like to be able to backup over the WAN if it is possible.  Is it possible to backup using time machine over WAN using an AE and a non apple external hard drive?

Time Machine cannot backup to a hard drive unless it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+.
You have me scratching my head about backing up through the WAN port. Normally, the WAN port would be used for a connection from a modem.....or another router.
However, if you have the AirPort Extreme configured to connect to another router via Ethernet, and the AirPort Extreme is set to operate in Bridge Mode, then you don't have a WAN port, they are all LAN ports, so it would not matter which of the ports that you used.

  • I have a MacBook, iPhone, Airport Extreme and external hdd. What is my best option to stream my music and movies to my hifi set and TV without having to turn on my MacBook?

I would very much like to store all my movies and music on my external HDD, which is connected to an Airport Extreme. Could for example Apple TV access this HDD and stream either music to my hifi system or video to my tv, without having to turn on my MacBook or iTunes? And use my iPhone to control everything?

  • Macbook Air/Pro difficult to connect to Airport Extreme and external disk

For some unclear reason my MacBook Pro and Air both have difficulty connecting to the Airport Extreme external disk after waking up from sleep. I can't even see the AE in the Airport utility. If I toggle wifi on/off several times it shows up and works. What is odd is that I can always connect with my PC and on the Bootcamp partition of the Macbook Air in Windows 8.1. I'm using OS 10.10, the most recent update and have a latest model AE running updated firmware. Any ideas?

Probably Yosemite issues.  I have issues seeing Airports as well.  Like you toggling the wifi fixes it.  Hopefully 10.10.2 will solve the problem.

  • Airport extreme and external WD HDD and time machine help plz!

Hi, i have used the AEB with my WD external hard drive perfectly before, but after i moved to a different country, i tried to hook it up again, it does comes some problems now, and i think its because of the new updates.
first of all, i have 2 external HD which are connected to each other via firewire, 1 tb and 500 gb wd hard drives. i hook it to my AEB and it doesnt show on my desktop anymore! so my time machinese couldnt find the HD, next is, i used airport utility, and it detects only 1 of the HD not both, so i tried to hook the usb to my laptop and it shows 2 HD connected with 1 usb connection, so i wonder whats going on here, need help, desperately needs to back up thanks!
i want the old school way, which is the plug and play usb then it shows on my desktop via AEB, it worked i know, cuz i did it before, somehow, now it doesnt, im sure its the update, but at the same time, i cant downgrade as well, im sure there is some solution for this auto mount via AEB and time machine issue in this new 7.2.3 firmware thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
All you probably really need to know is that +Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme+ due to likely corruption issues. The odd thing about this issue is that problems won't necessarily occur immediately as most users who have had difficulties with this approach (including me) find that backups work OK...for a time.
The best advice we could offer is that if you decide to try this anyway, make sure that you have another backup plan in place for your important files.
Time Machine backups will be supported if you use the Time Capsule, or if you use a drive that is directly attached to the computer that supports Time Machine.

  • Using Airport Extreme and External HD as Destination for iTunes Movies

I have a 1TB external HD hooked up to my Airport Extreme base station. It has 2 partitions since I only have a 160GB MacBook Pro. I would like to use the other half of the hard drive as a destination for my iTunes movie down loads, or for my aperture photos.
    Is this possible?

    How do you do it?
in iTunes > preferences > advanced, you have the option to change the +iTunes media folder location+. with the external mounted on your desktop, click on change and navigate to the external. iTunes will put all newly added content there.
if you want content added to the iTunes folder on your startup disk, point iTunes there via the advanced preference tab.
if you want to move selected content that already is in your library (on your startup disk), point iTunes to the external, select the content (e.g. all your movies), then right-click (or ctrl-click) and choose +consolidate files+ from the pop up menu. this will copy the selection to the specified location and you can delete the original files from your startup disk using the finder.
if you then want to purchase a new movie from the iTunes store, first check where iTunes is pointed, then download the file.
if you want files (e.g. music) to be added to the iTunes folder on your startup disk, temporarily point iTunes back there and import the files, then point iTunes back to the external.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD time capsule issues

I'm going to try to provide as much information for you so that you can recommend a fix to the problem.
    1. I've just become an Apple owner and also purchased Airport Extreme (AE) a Belkin USB (4 port) hub and a Seagate GoFLex, 1.8T external HDD.
    2. My system:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B04
    SMC Version (system): 1.69f1
    Serial Number (system): XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Hardware UUID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    3. Attached to the HUB is HP 6280 printer and the Seagate 1.8T GoFlex external HDD.
    4. I did configure the AE and my internet connect is working spot on.
    5. The AE recognizes the HP6280 printer and it works fine.
    Here's where the problem starts:
When I open Time Machine to configure Time Capsule I cannot get the AE to add thGoFlex external HDD drive to the WiFi.
Do I have reset the AE to default setting and start all over? Is there another way to add the GoFlex to the AE so it recognizes it; then, I can run the set up program for the time machine and have wireless capability.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up with Time Machine software via an Airport Extreme is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
By the way, a +Time Capsule+ is a wireless router, similar to an Airport Extreme, but a bit larger and with a hard drive built-in, and Time Machine backups to it are supported. In fact, that's the main thing the Time Capsule was designed for. See: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC344LL/A/Time-Capsule-2TB?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mc o=MTMzNzU2MjI

  • Airport Extreme and External USB Hard Drive

I've got an Airport Extreme (not the dual band model) running 7.4.2 and Airport Utility running 5.4.2. Trying to use it with an external hard drive I just bought. Formatted the HD for MAC and have made several backups with the HD connected directly to the Macbook (running 10.6.2). Airport Utility will not recognize the HD under "Disk" tab. Sharing is set on, and when I plug in a regular old flash drive it works perfectly. Just wont pull up the External Hard Drive.

I've hit almost the same problem. Upgraded the external USB drive to a new 2TB model: it works perfectly with the computer, but the Airport Extreme flashes its orange warning light and reports a 'problem with the external hard drive', recommends attaching it to the computer for repair. Drive checks out fine again when it's connected to the computer. Does the Airport Extreme support 2TB? Would it work if I partitioned the drive?

  • Problems with iTunes, Airport Extreme and external HD

    Hi guys,
I am having difficulties playing back films and TV shows which have been downloaded from the iTunes store to a iomega HD which is connected to an apple extreme. During the download, everything looks right and I can even watch it from the iMac (while downloading), from which I purchased the media. But then, once download is complete, I only see the name and generic file symbol for that particular media and I cannot play the media on the iMac or AppleTV and the cover image has disappeared. This does not happen when the external HD is directly connected to the iMac.
I would appreciate some help, if possible. Thanks in advance.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.

My Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both cannot do not mount my Seagate USB external hard.
    I am running OS 10.7.5
Both the TC and AE are updated to 7.6.1
The Seagate drive in formatted: Journaled HFS+
I tried everything on Apple's Article: HT1331 and the basic reboots and restarts.
    "Next"

It sounds like you may be confusing "mount" with "recognize".
Connect the drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit
    Click the Disks tab
Does the AirPort Extreme "recognize" your hard drive?  If yes, it will be displayed in the window.
See example below of a WD 500 GB drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
If your drive is formatted HFS+ and it does not appear here, then you will almost certainly need to use a powered USB hub with the hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.  The USB port on the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule is under powered.
Post back when the drive is "recognized" and we will next "mount" the drive.....although you likely already know how to do this.

    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.
