Airport Extreme and HP Psc printer help needed

Hey there, I just got a new Airport Extreme 802.11n, the internet works fine but I am having problems getting it to work with my HP printer. I have a HP PSC 2410 printer(multifunction).
The airport sees that it is connected and it comes up fine. But when I try and print something it just doesent work and usually will get stuck on "Opening Printer Connection".
Other times it may sound like the printer is going to print and it gets ready to but then stops. Also sometimes it can manage to print a few letters in Word but then I try to print a whole webpage and it wont work. But most the time it just wont work.
Things I have tried:
1.Call Apple-they said to come here
2.Called HP-they want me to give them $$ to get any support
3.Reinstalled drivers
4.Re-added printer
5.Power-cycled
6.Fiddled around with settings in the airport utility and elsewhere
The worst case I am expecting is that it just isn't compatible which in that case is no biggie because I can just hook it back up directly to my iMac and it works fine, just would be nice to be able to print wirelessly from my Macbook pro.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hello Drumwiz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

  • Airport Extreme and USB Hub + Printer and Hard Drives

I have been using my Airport Extreme with a USB hub with 2 external hard drives and one printer for a while now and everything has been going fine. However, recently, the hard drives have stopped registering when I have the USB hub plugged in. I have plugged the hub directly into my computer with everything attached and it works fine but the moment I plug the hub into the Airport, nothing shows up except that the printer still works.
Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks!

Hi, I've had this same problem now for more than 1 year, and nothing had solved it, until recently. I think I know what the problem is.
It turns out that not all USB 2.0 hard drive enclosures are the same. I had been using "Metalgear Substance II" enclosures for my 500-GB drives, and I had assumed all along that these were fine... I had assumed that one USB 2.0 enclosure was as good as the next USB 2.0 enclosure. WRONG!!!
By accident, I noticed that the drive-to-drive copy times from MetalGear USB 2.0 boxes was about 22 hours for a full 450-GByte transfer of information, while placing the SAME drive into a MacAlley enclosure reduced the copy time down from 22 hours to 6 hours... About 3.5 times faster!!! This means that the piece of crud Metalgear boxes I had been using for my network drives were ssssllllooowwww.
A big bright light blinked on in my head regarding my issues and problems with the Apple Airport Extreme Base-station and all of the problems I'd had with multiple drives, the AEBS locking up etc.. All of my issues had been associated with using the el-cheapo Metalgear enclosures.
As soon as I replaced the Metalgear USB boxes with MacAlley boxes, everything started to work great. No more issues with my Airport locking up. None. Problem fixed. Problem solved.
I can only assume that NOT ALL USB 2.0 BOXES ARE THE SAME. USB 2.0 does not mean that the transfer rates will actually be at 480-mbps. Quality matters. DO NOT USE METALGEAR BOXES WITH APPLE EXTREME. There may be other brands with suck just as much. I can vouch for the MacAlley boxes. They work great... and there may be other boxes that work too. There must be some issue with Apple Airport Base Station timing out on slower USB 2.0 crapola equipment... something that causes it to hang.
Anyway, I hope this helps. My problems are solved since going to the MacAlley enclosures.

  • Airport Extreme and TCP/IP Printer

I have a tcp/ip printer used by PCs and Macs in a satellite office. We need iPad's and iPhones to be able to print to it as well...
It is NOT an airport or apple ready printer. It is an older high-capacity Minolta. I print from Mac's using the generic pcl driver.
I am looking at the xPrinterServer from LanTronix but was curious of the Airport Extreme will work for this or does it only support printers that are already Apple ready?
    Network configuration:
    Wireless Router/Switch
      |
      |
      |
      |
    Printer
Basically, I would be adding the airport as a bridge device/same LAN - as the current router/switch.
Based on what I read, it does not seem to support non-airport ready printers.
    Thanks.

Thanks.. I chatted with apple about it. I suppose, being more specific, I meant an AirPrint printer...
I am going to try to Lantronix device, which is supposed to allow you to print to non-airprint printers with IOS devices.

  • Airport Extreme and HP 5MP printing

I have tried to get my HP 5MP printing through the new Extreme unit, but while the computer seems to see the printer, nothing prints. It works fine through the iMac USB port, but not through the Extreme USB port.
    iMac 17" non-Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. A quick look at the iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility List doesn't show this particular model. This doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

  • Airport extreme and printing on ipad

I have an airport extreme and a usb printer connected to the airport extreme. I'm trying to print using the airport extreme to a non airport printer I don't see the printer on the ipad when I select printer. (nothing shows up)
But when I add a printer on my mac that is connected to the airport extreme I can see the printer and it shows up as bonjour. (two entries show up, one with the location set as the base station the other nothing showing anything in the location option.
Any idea's why the printer doesn't show up on the ipad or my iphone?
    Thanks

Since you do not have an AirPrint compatible printer, you will need to install an App like Print Central to see if it might allow printing from the iPad and iPhone.  Most printers are supported, but you really will not know if it will work until you try.
PrintCentral for iPad on the iTunes App Store
Please post in the support area if you need more help in that regard. We are not iPad and iPhone experts here.

  • Airport Extreme - problem with usb printer and usb disk

I have Airport extreme with firmware 7.1. I try connect usb disk and usb printer with usb-hub to airport. I can't get disk or printer working. Also try connect only disk or printer without usb-hub to airport getting same problem. How I get disk and printer working with wireless network (windows pc computers)?
    1)
    My printer is HP PSC 1210 all-in-one ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90764&lc=fi&cc=fi&dlc=fi&lang =fi&cc=fi&y=0&x=0 )
    - printer seems working fine after installing bonjour printer installing wizard.
    - I get error (in windows) when I try print document from word. Error only says "error printing" in status value.
    - In airport utility all seems ok. Airport see usb printer "Hewlett-Packard psc 1200 series"
    - printer protocol is RAW and driver manufacture HP (also try with microsoft driver)
    2)
USB disk is Targa Databox II 250
    - Airport utility says "Disk needs repair. Errors were found with a disk connected to your airport base station. please connect the usb disk to your mac or pc and use disk utility or another disk application to repair the disk"
    - I have connected Targa usb disk to windows pc and run scandisk and defreg. No errors found in windows. Result..no help for airport

I have a similar problem to your second issue. Tried connecting a Netdisk to the USB port of the Airport Extreme and it also said there was a problem with the disk. Have performed a low level format on the disk and Airport Extreme still complained the disk had a problem.
After unplugging the disk, my route decided to stop allowing wireless connections even after rebooting. Ended up having to hard reset the Airport Extreme and reconfigure it with my old settings to work again.
FWIW, the first Airport Extreme I purchased today only worked on 802.11a and steadfastly refused to work on b/g so had to get a replacement. I suspect Apple's quality control is not quite as good as it used to be.

  • How do you connect Airport Extreme and share HP Photosmart 3210 Printer?

    Hello,
I have a Mac and PC Network composed of:
iMac 24'' Leopard 10.5.2 (main computer)
2 PC Fujitsu Pentium 4 on Windows XP
2 PC HP Pentium 4 on Windows XP
my network/connections are done via Airport Extreme and 2 hubs (other devices connected to the network like Wii, XBox etc.)
I am trying to share my HP Photosmart 3210 using the USB connector on Airport Extreme but I am experiencing strange problems while printing from the iMac. I can print an e-mail or a "light" document however if I want to print a Mac powerpoint (Mac office) largest document, the problem starts after the second or 3rd page, the printer goes on pause at the middle of the page and the interface indicates "problem communicating with the printer" or something like that.....unique possibility is to turn the printer off and start again but the problem persists. However, it seems that the printer works ok from the PC's.
I have tried to install the latest versin of the HP driver on my iMac but while configuring, the printer doesn't appear....I have checked on the printer settings and the IP address is 0.0.0.0.
I am now thinking about connecting the Printer via one of the Ethernet port on Airport Extreme.
    Questions:
    1. Any help on the above ? Any advice ?
    2. Is it normal to have no IP address on the printer when connected via USB on Airport Extreme ?
    3. Why HP config doesn't recognize the printer on the network ?
    4. Why does it work from the PCs and not from the iMac and why does it print light documents and not big ones ? Is this a memory7buffer problem on the printer ? What can I do if this is the case ?
    5. On the Airport Extreme Utility, do I need to share the printer via "Bonjour"?
    6. I am willing to plug an extrenal HD on the Airport Express USB port. Is it possible to put first a multi USB port on the Airport Extreme USB or is it going to cause problems ?
Thanks a lot for your help.
    P.

NCBob, Welcome to the discussion area!
If I understand correctly you are replacing the Linksys. It should be a simple replacement. Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Connect your Ethernet devices (including the switch) to the AEBS LAN ports.

  • Airport Extreme and Wireless Printing

Okay so i know that you can make wireless printing by simply connecting your printer to the airport extreme. However I have a wireless printer and i read somewhere that the extreme does not allow the wireless printer to be discovered when used with the extreme. I want to know if this is true. I currently use a linksys router and whenever i print something, the first time takes forever for it to detect the printer. I am hoping that a newer router will help but i want to know if the extreme does support wireless printers.

Same issue here. I recently upgraded to an Airport Extreme and can no longer print wirelessly. Before this router I used a different brand of wireless router and had no issues. When I go to the printer itself, an HP OfficeJet 7410, and look for networks on the little display it can see mine and the neighbors. However, when I tell it to join the network it gives me an error message along the lines of "Cannot join this network." New network password has been entered.

  • Printing with a USB printer using Airport Extreme and Vista

I have a airport extreme and it prints fine with all of my Macs.
I bought a VAIO installed with Vista and the lastest service pack. Here is what I have done
    * Installed Bonjour Printing software on the Windows Machine
    * Installed the print drivers on the Windows Machine
    * Bonjour finds the printer and driver without any problem
    * When I test the printer will print either one page or half of one page and then I get an error message.
    * I enabled the UDP 5353 port in the Firewall
The printer is a Epson Photo R220
I have no problems with the Macintosh works great and I have no problems with the Windows machine connecting to the Airport for internet usage.
If anyone out there has a solution I would very appreciative.
    Thanks

No help from the forum. I used Bonjour for Windows.

  • IPads, Airport Extreme and Printing

    Hi all,
I bought an Airport Extreme and have plugged a printer into the USB. The instructions imply anything on the Airport network should be able to use the printer.
Both my desktop and laptop Macs can, but I was really surprised to find that our iPads can't see it. It is enabled in Airport, but I haven't done anything with Bonjour.
I've looked through posts on here and it seems that for some reason iPads can't connect to a printer on Airport Extreme... this seems really, really odd!
I have no intention of buying an HP printer, which seems to be the only straightforward option. I tried searching for an oft-mentioned App called "Printopia" but it's no longer on the (Canada) app store.
This really does beggar belief.... it's only printing, for goodness sake! Surely it's just a matter of streaming data to a printer... which the iPad should surely be able to do over the air to the Airport Extreme??
Does anyone have any ideas how I can print from an iPad, without buying another printer?
    All advice appreciated!

    Thanks both.
I didn't think about drivers as I haven't had to install one for Mac for (probably) years! Things all just work when plugged in!
I tried Canon but their software only works with their wireless printers, which doesn't help me.
I didn't realise Printopia works just from a Mac.... in which case I might as well carry on doing what I'm doing now... emailing or synching docs through iTunes and print from the Mac.
Lets hope other printer manufacturer's make AirPrint capable machines soon...

  • Airport extreme and HP printer over ethernet problem

I'm new here, so forgive me if this topic has been done to death. I'm running airport extreme and have an HP photosmart 2600 connected to it via ethernet. My wife has no trouble printing with her Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard), but my daughter's older iMac only prints very intermittantly and mostly not at all.I've tried all the sharing options and reinstalling/updating the HP software, but no luck. The printer is at the other end of the house from the Airport, so connecting via usb is not an option. Any assistance much appreciated, thanks.

Using Ethernet should give the best results, plus it allows the use of more than just the print function, which USB would not. Proof of that should be the fact that this older HP model (it works with OS 9!!!) works well with your recent Mac's Snow Leopard OS.
If the iMac has OS X 10.5.8, the correct printer driver should have already been installed and no further update would have been needed. All that should have been needed was to open the Print & Fax panel of System Preferences and add the HP printer as the iMac's default printer.
When the iMac was first unable to print using the HP, did you consider any chance that the iMac was too far from the Extreme, or that there might have been some interference involved? Did you power cycle starting with the modem? When power cycling is necessary, printers seem to throw off unexplainable errors (such as out of paper or ink, paper jam - when none of these is true).

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?

I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?  The company that supports the system says I need to open the following - 8200, 8016, 8116, 10019, 12088.  All help is appreciated.

Open AirPort Utility on the PC, select the Airport Extreme and click Manual Setup
    Click the Advanced icon
    Click the Port Mapping tab
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the connection list to set things up
Reference pages 49-51 in the Apple AirPort Networks guide for more info
IF.....you do not see a Port Mapping tab when you click the Advanced icon, then that would mean that the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode and the main routing functions for the network are being provided by another device.
You will need to set up the port mapping on that device, which is likely your modem/router or gateway.

  • Can't print with Airport Extreme and Canon MP610

Can anyone suggest a way around this?
I am unable to print using my new Canon MP610 multifunction printer when connected via my Airport Extreme, but I can print when connecting the printer to my computer directly, not using the Airport Extreme. After several hours of frustration, updating drivers and firmware, etc, I contacted Canon and received an email back stating:
    "MP610 is not supported by
Canon with a wireless connection through an Apple Airport. This does
not necessarily mean that it will not work, but we are not able to
    provide configuration and troubleshooting information."
Last summer, my daughter was able to use the same Extreme to print wirelessly using her Mac Book Pro and her Canon MP600 multifunction printer (note - different printer model).
Sounds like Canon isn't saying it won't work, but they cant' help.
If anyone can offer a suggestion to work around this, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Doug

The most comprehensive set of troubleshooting instructions for printing problems involving Airport printers is found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107418
It is possible your printer simply cannot be made to work in this manner, and is more often than not a problem with multifunction printers.
