Airport. Extreme and Mybook Studio Edition - what cable do I need.
I haven't had my Mybook external harddrive attached to our home network for over a year and now I can't remember how I did it. In fact, I can't even find a cable that would work! Is it possible to run a cable from the Airport extreme to the MyBook? Or does it need to go into my modem? Exactly which wire do I need?
I have just been using Firewire to connect to my MacBook directly, but I want to share it over the network again.

You'll need some sort of USB cable that has an "A" connector on the end that will connect to the Extreme. The exact details will depend on what sort of USB connector the Mybook has.

If your password is incorrect, perform a "soft reset": momentarily depress its reset button, and launch AirPort Utility. A "soft reset" will lower the Extreme's shields for about five minutes, so that you can configure it with a new password.
AirPort Utility is in your Mac's Utilities folder. -
Airport Extreme & My Book Studio Edition II
Hi all,
I'm thinking about connecting a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II to my Airport Extreme base station. The caveat is that I would like to configure the drive as RAID-1 (drive mirroring).
On one hand, the Airport Extreme doesn't seem to officially support RAID drives, but on the other had common wisdom seems to be that RAID is support as long as the RAID partitioning is done inside of the drive itself.
Since this is confusing, I'm wondering whether anybody here has any advice or, even better, can confirm that the Aiport Extreme work with Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition II in RAID-1 mode.

Huh ..., it does work well. My AEBS and Airdisk are running without real problems.

I would very much like to store all my movies and music on my external HDD, which is connected to an Airport Extreme. Could for example Apple TV access this HDD and stream either music to my hifi system or video to my tv, without having to turn on my MacBook or iTunes? And use my iPhone to control everything?

Ok thanks for the info - I am only familiar with Windows so I am going to suggest a typical setup using your Toshiba laptop - you can then use the network with any device - tell me if this works for you.
Determine which version of Windows that your Toshiba uses.
Go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/#peripherals
You will be downloading Airport Utility
Download version 5.6.1 for Windows 7 or
Download version 5.5.3 for Windows XP or Vista
Once you have done this let me know if you will be using this Extreme as your primary router after your modem or is your modem also acting as a router or do you have another router anywhere in your network -
Setting up airport extreme and express
i purchased both the airport extreme and the express. i have cable modem and use a router (to it i have connected vonage phone and an external drive). from the router, i have successfully hooked up my airport extreme.
i now want to hook up my airport express in another room, so i can use it to connect to speakers and listen to music.
when i plug in the airport express, i dont get a connextion (amber light blinking). i have not bought the speakers/system yet, so i dont have any cables hooked to it. could this be the reason as to why i am not getting a connetction?
i also thought that i did not need to hook up anything to it, since this would just extend my wireless connection (i use a macbook and ibook)
any thoughts?

To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
- Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
Music tab
- Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
- Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked) -

Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so -

In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired. -

The extender would be either another AirPort Extreme....if you want to match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....or....an AirPort Express.....which would not match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....but it would provide more wireless signal coverage.
Whether you choose the AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express to extend the signal, try to plan to connect the extender back to the "main" AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you must connect the main and extending devices using wireless only, then there will be a significant performance drop on the entire network due to to the limitations of extending a network wirelessly. Unfortunately, you lose about half of the potential speed on the network when you do this. -
MyBook Studio Edition and Mac pro
So i got my Mac Pro today and have my MyBook Studio Edition 500GB hard drive with about 90GB of stuff I need to transfer over. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the MyBook, but when I attach it to the Mac Pro, it won't mount. The ports recognize that there's something there, but not the drive. Am I out of luck? I had only intended on keeping this drive long enough to dump my files, but now I can't even do that. I tried it in the firewire, firewire 800 and USB ports. Someone mentioned updating the firmware, but how can I do that if the drive isn't being recognized?
I also can't seem to force power down the MyBook. If I hold the power button in, it just stays on.

Others have said that the button manager doesn't work with Leopard.
And if you just got the Mac Pro, you should have 10.5.1 and the original system (hopefully cloned before doing anything) and only done fresh install where needed with latest Leopard compatible programs.

A Mac Pro needs to have the boot drive as GUID. If you are using or have the original boot drive it would have to be GUID. If you happened to merge your system from the G5 onto the Mac Pro's system, you could have problems.
Some G5s are happy with GUID, but native format is of course APL.

I just took the mini out of the box and hooked it up to the airport extreme through a direct ethernet cable between the two. Can i find the mini and set it up through an existing mac that is also hard wired to the network? Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your response.. I don't have a monitor nor a wireless keyboard to use on the mac mini...apple salesguy at bb tells me that I can hook up the mini to the ethernet port of my airport extreme and find the mini using finder on my 27 inch mac.
that my regular mac would see everything on the mini and that i can proceed to set everything on the mini through my regular mac...
I am trying to purchase the server software from the app store and turn the mini into a server..

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking. When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.

I went to Starbucks this morning and my Wi-Fi on my Verizon Iphone connected, what does this allow me to do? Try restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). It may not be properly assigning an IP address to your iPhone.
