Airport Extreme and OS 10.4.9: Airport Utility 4.1 latest software?

As some posts have already stated, for those with G4 PPCs with 10.4.9, Airport Utility 4.1.1 (2005) is installed and Software Update says it is the current version. However, I've noticed both the Airport Admin Utility and Airport Setup Assistant have some problems communicating with and seeing my Airport Extreme. This prompted me to search for newer software, and there is the 2007 Airport Utility Update. Unfortunately, launching the updater results in the message the update cannot be installed without Airport Utility 5.1 already installed. But, as an earlier post asked, where is this 5.1 utility?
BTW, before I installed 10.4.9, I was running 10.3.9, and had no problems setting up my Airport Extreme, so clearly there seems to be a problem between 10.4.9, and some other element of the setup--does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the response, however, my question remains: I'm wondering if anyone else with an Airport Extreme ("b" version) and OS 10.4.9 installed has a problem using Admin Utility 4.1.1 and/or Airport Setup Assistant 4.1.1? Specifically, the problem is, after resetting the Airport Extreme, I was able to set it up using the Setup Assistant (establish the network, set the password), but thereafter, it does not show up in the Admin Utility at all (but the Extreme's lights flash as it is being accessed) and in Setup Assistant, it shows up, but there are "errors" when trying to change settings. It is very odd.
When I was running 10.3.9, I had had no problems setting up/administering my Airport Extreme. Suspecting the Extreme itself, I even had an Apple Genius inspect it at the Apple store, but it was pronounced in working order. I might try to check the Airport card inside the G4 (by trying it in a friend's G4). If this communication problem is not shared by anyone else (ii.e., a software issue), it could be my Airport card.

  • Airport Extreme keep disappearing from airport utility

    Hello,
I have purchased recently an Airport Extreme and set it up as such:
    - wired connection to my ADSL modem
    - connected a 1TB drive by USB to the airport extreme
On top of this, I have an airport express that I use exclusively for itunes streaming to my stereo
Devices connecting to the Airport extreme are:
    - one Windows XP PC (wired)
    - iPhone, Ipad, Macbook Pro, all wireless
All firmware and airport utility versions are up to date.
First it works. All is connected, green lights, extreme and express detected by utility, USB drive visible everywhere. Then after a few hours, the following happens:
    - extreme and express are not visible by utility on mac book pro (but still detected by utility on iPhone!)
    - cannot stream music to express
    - USB drive no longer visible from my Macbook pro
    - shared itunes library no longer available
    - green lights still on
    - internet still on
The only way to fix it is to reboot the extreme.
    Any ideas ?

I'm sorry to say that I've had this exact same problem.  It's very frustrating because I lose the ability to stream to appletv and also to use wireless printing... the two main reasons I bought an Airport Extreme and got rid of my old router.
I will continue to have connectivity to the WAN but the airport utility on my MBP can't see any available airport devices. I thought it might be an issue with my OS, so I upgraded to Lion, but no change...
I've spent time searching the forums without success. I've also posted it to twitter. Hopefully, someone can help us? I'm wondering if the router hardware is bad or if it's a wireless driver issue with my MBP.

  • Airport Utility not allowing me to configure Airport Express

I'm running a PC connected directly to an Airport Extreme (5th Gen).  I would like to set up 2 airport express devices in my house.  Initially, I was able to get one to connect but not the other.  However, now neither device is working properly.  I've rebooted, reset factory settings, searched this and other communities, and cursed to no avail.
Here are the steps I've taken:
    1. Started my Airport Extreme and configured it via the AP utility
    2. I've set it up as a 'Create a wireless network'
    3. Set security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    4. I have checked the 'Allow this network to be extended'
    5. Radio mode is on Automatic
    6. I've enabled a Guest network
    7. I do not have MAC Address access control enabled
    8. My iPad, iPod, laptops, etc can all pick up the wireless signal and everything is working well
    9.  From here, I plugged in my two Airport Express devices into an outlet.
    10. AP Utility picked them both up as well as my USB printer but only one Airport Express device would work - meaning only one would stream music via iTunes.(I haven't even tried the printer yet)
    11.  I tried a bunch of reboots etc and finally took the non functioning one back for an exchange.
    12.  I got home, rebooted everything and no AP utility won't pick either of them up (amber flasing on both Airport Express devices, green light on the Airport Extreme)
    13.  In desperation I plugged int he Aiport Express devices into the the Airport Extreme ethernet ports and both showed up in the AP Utility.
    14.  However, everytime I try and configure the Airport Express devices (while plugged into the Airport Extreme) I keep getting a message saying
An error occurreed while trying to access the Appled wireless device.  Mkae sure your network connection is valid and try again
    Erro -6753
Any thoughts before I take everything back and get a ham radio?

FYI - My external hard drive is formatted to a Mac and my iMac is backing to to it fine.  However, everytime I try to select the backup drive on my MacBook Pro, the only option is "other Time Capsule".  Airport Utility is not allowing me to access the external hard drive.  Anyone...please help!  Thanks in advance.

  • Can not find USB Hard Drive with Airport Utility Programme

I am quite new to MAC and I am having difficulty making my Iomega External HD seen by the Airport Extreme Base Station (new version). I have the latest Aiport Utility software 5.2.1 but when I go to the hard drive section it does not see it. The drive is connected via USB. Can anyone help me please.

Hi, this could be caused if the hard drive isn't in the right file system. To make it work, it needs to be formatted in a 'MAC OSX EXTENDED' format. You can do this in Disk Utility if you connect the drive directly to the computer and go to applications/utilities/disk utility.
Another question that may be asked this external hard drive, does it have its own power supply? If it does it should be ok, but some small portable thieves power which the router probably wont provide. If this is the case you can sort it by getting a powered USB hub (which don't cost much).
Another issue you might come across was a bug I found if you give the Hard Drive a name and connect it to the router and it appears and the next time you unplug the router power and connect it again it sees it but you cant connect to it on any computer over the network, the hard drive name needs changing every time you unplug the router, its a silly bug but im glad I finally worked it out.
Also, Airport Utility has a new software update, so have a look for it, should be 7.2.1 now!
Let me know how you get on!

  • Airport Utility Version 5 For Window

Can anyone tell me where I can get/download the airport utility for Windows XP software, as I was not given the Windows version of the software, when I bought the 802.11n airport base station.

    HongKee,
    Welcome to the discussion forum.
Go to the following link and I think you can search for what you want.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

  • Airport Utility 6.3.2 says it does not support AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g)

My Airport utility is the latest version 6.3.2 but it does not support my AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g). I tried to download an earlier version but it wont let me.

Apple no longer supports these earlier base stations. If you wish to retain using an older 802.11g AirPort base station you will be left with only a few choices in order to administer it: 1) Use a Mac with an earlier OS X operating system, Snow Leopard or Leopard, or 2) Use a Windows XP or Windows 7 computer running AirPort Utility for Windows.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Need help with Airport Extreme and my new Verizon Fios Internet connection

I just got the Fios install, and the tech and I couldn't figure out how to use my Airport Extreme as my wireless connection. I'm not real tech savvy (and I've only been a Mac guy for about 18 months). My current arrangement is the basic Verizon setup with the Airport out of the loop. How can I go about moving from here back to using my Airport Extreme? I need the range! Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you tried resetting and reconfiguring the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
Are you using OS 10.5 or OS 10.4 or earlier?
Are you using the round 802.11b/g AEBS or the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS?
If you are using OS10.5 OR the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS you should refer to "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" (direct PDF link).
Otherwise you should refer to "Designing AirPort Extreme Networks" (direct PDF link).

  • Airport Extreme and 500 Gig drive

I have 27 MacBook's in a mobile lab connected to a brand new Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme serves up a 500 Gig drive that (during my tests) I can connect to flawlessly.
My laptops all have the user, "Student." In the dock on the Student account, I have a folder that is located on the AP Extreme hard drive that I want my students to access.
During my instruction to the students, I had them all click the folder in their docks so they could see the contents of said folder. There's only 6 sub folders, so it's not like a heavy load showing previews or anything.
20 computers connected to the disk successfully (there's no password to see the contents) and 7 didn't. The 7 that didn't asked for a password to the disk when there isn't one.
So I took one of the non-working computers from a student and tried to open a file in MS Word. I clicked on the base station in the list of available servers (on the left side of the open sheet). A message popped up on the screen that said I'd reached the maximum number of clients that can access that resource. ...so I opened up the Airport Utility and counted the computers connected to the base station. 27.
I've looked high and low for documentation from Apple that states that only 20 computers can use the "Air Disk" simultaneously. All of their documents say that 50 devices can connect to the base station wirelessly. Nothing about a lesser number connecting to the hard drive.
I really want to have made a mistake somewhere in my setup. Though it seems to be idiot proof.
Can anyone confirm or deny my findings? Or can someone point out some documentation that specifically says otherwise? And if so, how do I make this work?!
My intention was to keep the storage mobile with the lab and not have to put it on my server as the wired network is already substantially loaded down with other stuff. If I have to move it to my server, then that means quite a bit of work re-setting up all the laptops. It'd also chap my hide as the Airport Extreme advertises that it can handle 50.
    Help!

I did install the disk utility. How do I go about using the disk utility to set up the Hard Drive?
AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
Should I install Bonjour for Windows? If so, where can I get it?
Only if you want to access a shared USB printer connected to the AirPort. You can get it here: Bonjour for Windows 1.0.4
Not sure what the drive is formatted in.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) supports USB storage devices that have a block size of 512 bytes, and are formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS-plus), FAT16, or FAT32. It will NOT work with NTFS-formatted volumes.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

  • Since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base station and time capsule items showing in airport utility as a network.  when able to "forget" them they initially drop off but soon return. how do i get them deleted and stay that way

since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base stations and time caps showing up as though they are a part of my network. sometimes i can "forget" them and they will disappear initially but soon return. i need and want only my connection inside my home . any ideas. i have done a factory reset and set up a new network but they continue to show up.

I'm not convinced that the problem lies in Airport Utility. This same thing was happening to me, nearly exactly as you describe it. The thing is that with me, the problems clearly started when I updated the firmware in my Airport Express (n). That's when all the wacky stuff started happening. Sometimes it would show up in AU, sometimes it didn't and even if it didn't, I could still access the internet through it.
But as you said, the problems got really bad when another Express (b/g) was put on the network with it. Even when it did work, the (b/g) would make it impossibly slow.
You know more about this than me, and clearly have more patience if you've restarted the network fifty times. I gave up at about ten.
In any case, your solution is more of a work around and if you're still having that slow connection problem, I'm not sure you've got it. But thanks for your reporting of this. At least I know I'm not crazy.
