Airport Extreme, Apple TV and USB Drive Speed?

I've just purchased a new airport extreme and 1.5 TB external hard disk. I figured out how to mount the disk and share it over my home network. I also designated a folder on the disk as my iTunes music folder (I purchased the airport and HD for the express purpose of achieving this set up, because I've accumulated so much media through iTunes that my MacBook Pro's internal disk has long since been full and I've been storing TV shows, movies, etc. on an external drive). The set up works -- BUT it is SLOW, especially when my Apple TV is syncing with iTunes.
Is there an optimal way to set up these connections so that syncing is not so slow?
Any help would be much appreciated!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
*"internal disk has long since been full"*
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.

Airport Extreme will not show USB drive installed Solved... At least for me!
Here's what I had to do to make it work with the newest 7.3.1 firmware.
Ready for this? No Joke Really!
    1. Connect your USB drive to the Airport Extreme.
    2. Turn it on.
    3. Open the Airport Utility.
    4. Go to Manual Setup.
    5. Choose Disks and File Sharing.
Yep, we are going to set file sharing before we even see the disk we want to share!
You (I) had to set File Sharing on and Share Disks over Ethernet checked as well as set the Work Group (In my case). THEN restart the Airport Extreme.
After it re-started... My USB Drive was now present and ready for use.
I also dis-allowed Guest access. I re-started ALL computers in my network, both Windows and MAC. The USB drive held and works GREAT!
I know... Most of you thought this was a joke, It's not!
I tried everything to get the USB drive to work and failed every time just like most other people. Doing it this way worked like a charm.
    Go Figure huh!
Hope this helps someone with this issue.

  • Latest model Airport Extreme: LAN NAS vs usb drive

new  model AEBS: LAN NAS drive Vs usb connection.
Is there an actual (vs theoretical) speed advantage in using a NAS drive connected to one of the LAN ports, vs just connecting via the usb on the latest AEBS?  I read the usb performance is much better on the new model: 192 Mbps read and 172 write via usb as per cnet test:

    Possibly.

  • AirPort Extreme Does Not See USB Drive

I've had no luck getting my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) to see a USB hard drive. Using a WD MyBook, there's simply no response from the AirPort. Is there some trick to getting the AirPort to see the drive? Clearly this product isn't working as described! There's no mention in any of the marketing materials of needing to do anything but plug in the drive to the USB port.

This whole 'mount USB drive' feature appears to be VERY problematic. I cannot get the drive attached to my Airport Extreme to be visible to the iBook which runs its net connection thru the AE unit.
Has anyone submitted a bug to developer.apple.com?
If you have not - it is possible to acquire a free developer's account - just fill out the forms - and then you can add your voice to the chorus of bugs posted - which is WAY more likely to get attention by Apple engineers than just posting on this forum.
If anyone has any news about how to systematically solve this problem, please let me know.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't recognize USB Drive

I have a USB external drive that is working fine when attached to my iMac but my airport extreme doesn't see it at all. I have tried resetting the power to both devices.
    AEBS version 7.2.1
Does the drive have to be formated a certain way for it to work? Right now it is "Mac OS Extended" I have also had it formatted as OS Extended (Journaled). Neither are working.

  • Airport Extreme, Apple TV and two Expresses

I have a network that runs between the Apple Extreme and the Apple TV. I joined two Expresses to that same network. The Apple TV disconnects now when I play music through the two Expresses.
Should I set up two different networks: Extreme to Apple TV (one network)AND Wireless G Adapter to the two Expresses (a second network)?
    Thanks for your help,
    Matt

This may work if your assumption (and mine) is that your existing wireless LAN doesn't have enough bandwidth to support an AppleTV and two Airport Expresses.
I assume you are thinking of having one cabled LAN with two wireless access points on it - one dedicated to communicating with AppleTV (using an Airport Extreme N base station) at N-only speeds, and another dedicated to communicating with the two Expresses (could use any wireless router or access point that supports b/g speeds). Yes - that will work and may well solve your problem.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11ac and USB disk failure

    hi,
Had an Airport Extreme 5th gen with a USB disk attached for over a year of which my Mac was using Time Machine and creating backups no problem, didnt skip a beat.
Just bought a new Airport Extreme 802.11ac, attached the same USB disk and Time Machine works once or twice then fails saying it cant find the disk. True enough if I open finder and try and find the disk its not listed.
Opening the airport utility it shows the disk attached. If I reboot the Airport Extreme the disk shows up again in finder for a short period of time.
Looks like they released a firmware update 7.7.1 which was supposed to fix this but it seems in my case it hasnt. Even factory reset after the update but no joy.
Normal wireless activities like internet access etc are fine.
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this yet? If not I guess ill try a non self powered disk or something, either that my AE is faulty.
    thanks
    matt

My experience with the 802.11ac extreme with 7.7.1 firmware suggests Time Machine doesn't work when the name assigned to the device (not the SSID) contains a period, which the out-of-the-box name does.
Out-of-the-box, with the default device name still assigned, I could not get Time Machine to recognize the remote disk on multiple 10.8.4 Macs until I created an empty folder on it. Yet once registered with Time Machine, backups never occurred to the disk--TM status was always "waiting". The server name displayed in TM had the period in "802.11ac" escaped with a backslash (i.e., "802\.11ac").
I renamed the extreme, but used a name that still contained a period. The same difficulty was encountered registering the disk with TM. Once registered, TM status for the disk was still "waiting".The server name again had the period escaped with a backslash.
Finally, I just removed the period from the name. Registering the disk with TM then occurred normally and backup began immediately.
(In an earlier case with the 7.7.0 firmware, I had no trouble registering and backing up to an 802.11ac Time Capsule that had previously been given a name without a period in it.)

  • Apple mobile device USB driver is missing and cannot be installed

    Hi,
My iPod nano (6th gen) is not recognised by iTunes but is recognised by Windows sometimes (once in 2-3 attempts).
Every time I connect my iPod to my laptop, a window pops up saying "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...".
I looked through apple support page and narrowed down the cause to the driver.
Apple mobile device USB driver does not show up in Device Manager.
However iPod does show up under Portable Devices as a camera when iPod is recognised by Windows.
I tried reinstalling Apple Mobile Device USB Driver as it was shown in the support page (right click on iPod in Device Manager>update driver software>...).
This did not work (gave me an error saying "the folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device...".
So I tried another method I found online; extract iTunes installer (itunes6464setup.exe), extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi in it, and use the files in it to update driver.
This gave me the same error.
It seems that a Windows driver is installed for my iPod (WPD FileSystem Volume Driver); when I opt for "search automatically" in Uptade driver software, this driver shows up with the message "the best driver for your device is already installed".
Also, my iPod is shown in Devices and Printers with an exclamation mark (when I connect my iPod to my laptop, the exclamation mark shows up only after I click OK on the message window "an iPod is detected but could not be identified properly...")
Troubleshoot showed "Windows is uninstalling this device (Code 21)".
I'd appreciate it if someone could help with the situation.
I'm using Windows 8.1, iTunes 12.1 for Windows 64bit, and iPod nano 6th gen.
I haven't connected my iPod to my laptop for a long while, but I recall connecting an iPhone to my laptop a while ago and it was recognised just fine.
After that I updated my Windows from 8 to 8.1, but I don't think it has anything to do with the problem as my iPod wasn't recognised by iTunes before and after the update.
    Thank you in advance!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases. Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

  • If I buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station and I have an Optus Cable internet. Do I really need an Apple Care Protection? or I don't have to?

    Hi I'm from Australia.
If I buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station and I have an Optus Cable internet. Do I really need an Apple Care Protection? or I don't have to?

Any specific recommendations for a standalone ADSL modem though?
Always a good idea to use the modem that your service provider supplies or recommends....often free....since you know that it will be supported in the event of connection difficulties.
I have made the mistake of choosing the "best" modem based on test reports....only to find out later that the ISP would not offer any support when I was having connection difficulties.
The ISP blamed the modem. The modem support folks blamed the ISP.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize iPhone and Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is missing

Hi. iTunes does not recognize my iPhone when I connect it to my PC via USB. I found iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows and went through the listed steps to diagnose the problem. The problem seems to be the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. It is not listed in Device Manager and it does not seem to be installed on my PC. I followed directions for "If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed" and I was not able to find anything. In that case there are no further steps that you can take listed on iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes. I then uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and other software components (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923) three times but each time Apple Mobile Device USB Drive was missing. If anyone can advise me I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer. I'm a newb here and will try to offer as much detail as I can about the dilemma at hand.
Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
    My theories:
    - true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
    - The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
    QUESTIONS:
    - Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
    - I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
    Rule out:
    - wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    13 ASCII characters = 104 (aka 128)-bit WEP
    encryption
If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
    versa.
You may find the following article helpful:
    - Apple article, especially the part about
    "Third-party client to Airport".
Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?
Thanks again for your help and suggestions... I really appreciate it.
