Airport Extreme b/g as dedicated print network?

I have used an older AirPort Extreme b/g for some years now to print via USB with an ancient HP LaserJet 4ML printer. Thanks to iFelix's web site, I learned how to set up the USB printing using the HP Jet Direct-Socket setting in the Printer Setup Utility and the Airport Extreme's IP address. That worked very well.
Now I've gone and ruined everything by purchasing a new wireless router, a Cisco WRT610N for its various capacities and speed. I intended to extend its network, but can't use WDS because the WRT and Airport Extreme cannot do that together (and the WRT doesn't do WDS out of the box anyway). Apparently I can't extend the Cisco network with the Airport Extreme.
I searched on this and other forums and realized I could set up the Extreme to be a standalone print server (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12511872&#12511872). However, I can't configure the Extreme to "join a wireless network." My choices are only "create a network" or "participate in WDS." Creating a new network just for printing results in the error message from the print process: "The process "rastertoprinter" stopped unexpectedly with status 2."
My setup: OS 10.4.11. A MacBook with intel core duo. An old PowerPC that has always been able to print (G5, running 10.4.11). Airport Extreme running firmware 5.6 (I'm scared to update to 5.7.) Airport Utility 5.4.2.
Thank you for your wise responses,
Sarah

Although as I indicated in my original post I was not able before to print from a separate wireless network, now I am. I set up the network while the Airport Extreme was connected by Ethernet to both the MacBook and the Cisco router. I had restarted the computer, also. This time when looking to add the HP printer using Printer Setup Utility, it showed up as a Bonjour printer when I selected "Default Browser" as the connecting method.
I did not try to print with the Airport connected to the Cisco only, without setting up a separate network, partly because the option of "connect to a wireless network" never comes up.
I can now print wirelessly again--thank you. Yes, I do have to switch to a different wireless network to do so, and it's sometimes hard to remember to swith back so I can connect to the internet....

    Welcome to the discussions, Mike!
I assume that you have the AirPort Extreme setup as your main wireless router, correct?
If yes, you should first check to make sure that the printer is joining the wireless network and receiving a correct IP address. You will need to locate the MAC address of your printer. It's usually located on a label on the back or bottom of the device. Jot that number down.
    To perform this check:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click on "Wireless Clients" near the bottom of the summary page
A list of connected devices with their MAC address (or AirPort ID in the case of Mac products) will be displayed. Do you see the MAC address of your printer listed here?
If not, I'm sure you feel that you have entered the correct configuration settings for your printer, but unfortunately, that's not the case. You'll need to check your printer setup again to enter the correct settings for the printer to join the wireless network. It's almost always a question of finding a compatible wireless security setting in cases like this.
Open AirPort Utility again and click Manual Setup
This time, click on "Wireless Security" to identify the type of security that the AirPort Extreme is using. The printer settings must match up exactly with the AirPort Extreme settings.
    Post back on your findings.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network

I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network and I had to change all my ip addresses.  I managed to catch on to the apple replacement range and reset all my printers' addresses manually.  Was there an easier way to handle this?  Also, I lost the connection to my WD Worldbook drive though and haven't been able to come up with a work around.  Any ideas would help, thanks!

First, to answer your question about the WD drive - I could not find it with an ethernet connection.  I tried connecting to the usb port on the Extreme, but it was not visible there either.
When connecting an external network drive to the AirPort Extreme by Ethernet, the drive would be providing the file sharing service. This would be typical of a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. If your WD Worldbook offers NAS services then it should be found by network clients per WD's instructions.
When connected to the Extreme's USB port, the Extreme would take over the file server services. However, the drive must not be formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT as either are not recognizable by the Extreme for sharing out. My guess is this is the case and why the AirPort Utility cannot "find" the drive.
If your WD Worldbook has an Ethernet interface that is the one you should use for best performance. It is still possible that this drive is using an IP address that is not in the default range of the Extreme.
How can I reset the IP range on the router.  I have to use the iPad app to manage the router and I didn't see any way to change the range.  Did I miss something or would I need to use an Mac computer to get more options?
You can change the IP address range of your AirPort using the AirPort Utility on your iPad.
    To change the range:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
    Select Advanced.
    Select DHCP Range.
    Select 192.168

  • Can multiple Airport Expresses be connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?

I am a big fan of both the Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  In my work environment, I need to create a good quality single wireless network around 2 large aircraft hangars and some offices at the perimeters.  We have a good quality wired Cat5e ethernet network extended between the buildings and offices now.  Is this possible and does it seem like a good practical solution?  I think that 4 or 5 Airport expresses would easily provide good wireless coverage in the needed areas.

Can multiple AirPort Expresses be connected via ethernet to an AirPort Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?
Yes, this will work just fine as long as any individual Ethernet cable run will not exceed much over 330 feet or about 100 meters.

  • Can I use an Airport extreme to extend my ATT wireless network?

    Hi
I get my internet through an ATT DSL wireless router positioned up in my attic. I have a studio in my basement with 2 computers, a plotter, a laser printer and a fax/scanner/photo printer. I've run an ethernet cable down from the attic in to a central location in my basement. I've run ethernet cable from the three printers to that same location. I want to set up an unused Airport extreme base station in my studio to connect the plotter and two printers to my wireless network. One snag is that one of my computers has a bad airport card slot and needs to be connected to the network with an ethernet cable.
Can you help me solve this?

    OK,
Got er done this weekend and I have extended the network to my studio. One problem though, My main computer keeps dropping off the wireless network. It connects for a second and then gone. I have solved this for the moment by disconnecting my scanner from the AEBS and connecting my main computer to the AEBS. I still have not connected my laser printer to the network, but will use its USB connection to connect it to the AEBS. I just need to go buy a longer cord.
Things work for now and I can work on some jobs this week. I plan to search the boards to solve the dropping off problem soon.
Thanks again for all of your help.

  • Can I set up Airport Extreme for wireless printiing over Uverse network?

I previously had DSL, and used my Airport Extreme as my wireless router. It was in my home office, so my printer was directly plugged into the Base Station. I recently switched to ATT Uverse, which came with its own wireless router. The new router is in another room, next to the TV. My question is this: Can I set up my old AEBS to function as a wireless printing outpost, like an Airport Express, that would be connected to my office printer but accessed through the ATT network? Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, Patrick!
Can I set up my old AEBS to function as a wireless printing outpost, like an Airport Express, that would be connected to my office printer but accessed through the ATT network?
In theory, yes. In practice, this is one of those things that you won't know until you try. Since the AEBS will have to "join" your ATT wireless network, the biggest question will be whether or not you can find a matching security setting on the AEBS for the ATT wireless network.
Are you able to get into the setup pages on the ATT router to see exactly what type of security is being used? Ideally, it will be WPA2 Personal, but different manufacturers use different names and flavors for the same thing, so it's rarely as easy as one might hope when you try to get devices from two manufacturers to talk to each other over wireless.

  • Problem with airport extreme and HP photosmart 8750 printer

I have connected my HP8750 printer to my internal network via one of the ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme base station. My computer accesses the network via the wireless AP.
I have no trouble finding the printer - it shows up as a bonjour printer when I try to add a printer.
It does not know how to access the "supply levels" page hosted by the printer. This information is absolutely necessary in managing a photo printer.
Before I upgraded to the Airport Extreme, I was using an older SMC wireless router. There the supply levels web page showed up at a fixed address.
Does anyone know how I can access this page?

I have found a "solution" which is not elegant but ....
I connect my iMac to the Airport Extreme via an Ethernet port. I then look at the IP address of my iMac and poke around using a web browser, examining adjacent IP addresses. I find the HP8750 hosted page at one of these. I then switch back to wireless and the web page is still there. I bookmark it.
I guess these addresses are stable.
It would be more elegant to be able to get the same info via the printer popup window by clicking on "supply levels" but this workaround seems to work.
How do other flavors of printer handle this when they are addressed as bonjour printers?

  • Can Airport Extreme connect wirelessly to a printer

I am trying to connect a wireless capable HP printer to Apple Airport extreme. HP computer shows that it connected to Airport Extreme, but my network computers connected wirelessly cannot seem to find the printer. Any suggestions for fix?

  • Using airport extreme to share an ethernet printer

I'm sure this is supposed to be easy but I can't get it to work. I have a wifi network and an Airport Extreme. I want to use the Airport Extreme only to share an ethernet printer to other macs in the house. I'm using Airport Utility and have gotten my base station on the network. Now, how do I get to this printer?? My config tabs in Airport Utility are Base Station, Internet, Wireless, and Disks - I'm missing another tab that I see in on-line instructions of how to set this up (maybe because mine is old - v7.6.1). How do I ask if the Airport Extreme can see the printer I've plugged into it?

perfect, the printer has an admin page, but how do I get to it - how do I find out what IP address has been handed to it by the Airport - or does it just pass it through to the router?
I've also seen posts on-line suggesting that if the main router is not an Apple Airport, then the Extreme cannot share a printer. Is that right?

  • AirPort Extreme (802.11n) & Epson CX3100 Printer Problem

I recently purchased the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n and tried hooking up my Epson Stylus CX3100 to it. It detects the printer but it only prints the first few lines then stops. I check the status window of the printer and I see no error message whatsoever. I have to turn off the printer to force the paper out. The printer prints fine when connected directly to the iMac.
I was using the Gimp printer driver found in my iMac. Since that didin't work, I tried installing the new Intel drivers from Epson. But when I try adding it to me AEBS using the official driver, I get an Error: -9672 message.
I've already updated my AEBS's firmware to 7.1 before I tested the printer, so I'm not sure if it's a firmware issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your iMac isn't receiving an IP address at all - the 169.254.x.x is "self-assigned" and indicates it is not receiving the IP address from any router. That won't work.
I'm not sure what you intend to do with the Express so leave it unplugged for now. Use Airport Utility, select your Airport Extreme, click "manual setup", then click the Base Station tab. Note the name of the wireless network it's creating.
Then click the Wireless tab. Make sure the Wireless Mode set to "create a wireless network". Next, consider using no Wireless Security at all, until you've sorted out your problems.
Next, click the Airport pane, then click the Internet pane, then click the Internet connection tab. Next to "Connection Sharing" select "share a public IP address".
Click the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 "using DHCP".
Click Update and let it restart.
Make sure your iMac is connected to the wireless network created by your Extreme. It should then get an IP address of 10.0.1.1 and you should be able to connect.
If this works then we can configure your Express to do whatever you want it to do. If it doesn't work write back and we'll try to figure out what's wrong.

Im a total NOOB. Please excuse my poor knowledge of Routers and the like.
I really need some advice from the MAC community to steer me in the right direction. I want to give as much information as possible in order for you folks to help me down the right path.
    CURRENT SET UP:
    (3) Apple Computers in 3 bedrooms. (1) iMac Core2 Duo, (1) iMac Core Duo, (1) eMac G4. All have built in wireless cards from Apple.
Broadband Cable Internet from Comcast. Cable comes from wall directly to a Motorolla Surf Board Wireless SBG900. The Wireless Motorolla Cable Modem sits on the floor in the corner of one bedroom. All 3 computers work perfect. Never drop a signal. All very fast connections. No Internet or sharing issues at all. I also decided to add the "Plug in" Airport Express. This has an HP Color Laser Jet Printer pluged into it via USB. All 3 computers print and share seamlessly to it. Set up is a breeze. No issues what so ever with anything.

I don't think there's anything wrong at all with what you've done. The bottom line is do YOU find any faults or disadvantages to your set up? As far as the new Extreme, things would just be alot faster (for those 802.11n enabled computers only, though)

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.
