Airport Extreme Base station does not 'see' Airport w/Airtunes.  HELP!

I just purchased and installed an Airport Extreme Base startion (802.11n), and it does not 'see' my Airport Extreme with Airtunes. I have already tried re-setting the Airport + Airtunes to the factory settings, but since I installed the new Base station software, I no longer have the Airport Express Sett up assisstant?!?
What am I doing wrong?

Your Mac won't be able to communicate with your Airport Express until you reconfigure your Airport Express to join the wireless network now being created by your new Airport Base Station.
The "Airport Setup Assistant" has been replaced by the "Airport Utility". You can find that new utility installed in your Mac's Applications->Utilities folder.
What you should do now:
1. do an factory default reset of your Airport Express.
2. plug the Airport Express (temporarily) into power in the same room as your Base Station and your Mac.
3. on your Mac, run the Airport Utility. It should "see" your Airport Express. Click on the Airport Express icon, click to continue (your Mac will switch wireless networks temporarily), click Continue, and follow the instructions for configuring the Airport Express so that it "joins" the existing wireless network created by your Base Station.

  • HT3500 I am trying to hook up my new Canon MG5320 printer wirelessly to my MacBookPro with OSX.8.2.  The Airport Extreme Base Station does not have a WPS button and so I seem to be stymied even though the printer detects the Airport Extreme.  Suggestions?

I am trying to set up my new Canon MG5320 printer to my wireless network.  However, there is no button on the Airport Extreme to push when I get to that step in the set-up directions.  I am using OSX.8.2.  Suggestions please!

If the display shows the "Press and hold the WPS button..." message on the MG display, press the red Stop button on the MG and then select Standard Setup. The MG will search for networks and should display your Airport Extreme's network name. Select this and then enter the password to connect to this network.

  • Airport Extreme base station does not appear in Airport Utility

I cannot see the basestation that I am connected to via WIFI or Ethernet.  I cannot see the basestation on ipad or iphone app either.  Basestation is working fine and i have connection working fine with a green light but cannot configure the basestation to allow guest networks or connect my external storage drive.
    any suggestions will be appreciated.

OK. That should be a third or fourth generation Extreme, plenty new enough. (The most recent OS X and iOS versions of AirPort Utility cannot configure the original Extremes, but they can handle my mid-2007 second generation Extreme.)
If two or three devices on the same network as the Extreme cannot "see" the configuration interface, I would guess that the problem lies in the Extreme itself.
Have you tried power cycling the Extreme?
Did you purchase AppleCare for your 2011 MBP? If so, and if you bought the Extreme less than two years earlier, the AppleCare should cover the Extreme also.

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Steady green light on A1084. Airport Utility 5.6 says set up is complete.   Airport Express base station does not appear in the menu bar, so I cannot select it.  Is there a fix?

Steady green light on A1084. Mac OS X 10.7.5. IMac. Verizon DSL Actiontec GT704-WGB modem. Airport Utility 5.6 says set up is complete.   Airport Express base station does not appear in the menu bar, so I cannot select it and send a signal to airport express to play airtunes through my stereo amplifier.  Is there a fix?

I plugged a model A1034 Airport Extreme Base Station into the Verizon DSL Actiontec GT704-WGB modem with an ethernet cable and now the AirPlay icon appears in the Itunes window immediately to the right of the volume control and I can select it and play Airtunes wirelessly through the A1038 Airport Express Base Station in another room connected to a stereo amplifier by a Monster mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable running from the output jack on the A1034 Airport Express Base Station into the CD jacks on the amp.  The problem is that I have to select the Apple Network Airport Express Base Station as my network in order to select the Airport Express Base Station when I click the AirPlay icon, which means I have no Internet signal to the Imac. If I select the Airport Extreme Base Station or the Verzion modem as my network, then I have an Internet signal to the Imac, but the Airport Express Base Station is grayed out when I click on the AirPlay icon, so I cannot select the Airport Express Base Station and send tunes to the Airport Express.  It would be nice to play Airtunes while simultaneously accessing the Internet.  I don't understand your question about what program I am using for which I require AirPlay.  I am not learned about computers in general, and even less so about Macs than PCs.  I thought the program I was running was Itunes, and there was no separate program to run to use AirPlay for the purpose of sending a signal from the Itunes on the Imac to the A1084 Airport Express base station in a another room, and then out as described above to the stereo amplifier to listen to Itunes music remotely in the other room, without any kind of cable, wire, etc., connecting the Imac to the stereo amplifier.  I would guess that the most common use for the A1084 is to play Itunes through a stereo in another room without the need to run wires from the computer to the stereo.  I realize it would be easy simply to run a very long mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable across the floor connecting the Imac to the amp without the need to use AirTunes, Airplay or any kind of AirPort, but it would be both unsightly and a tripping hazard.

  • How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Can an airport extreme base station attached to another airport extreme base station as an extender transmit a different network name and have it's own security?

Can an airport extreme base station attached to another airport extreme base station set up as an extender transmit a different network name and have it's own security?

No. The AirPort cannot extend another AirPort's wireless network and simultaneously broadcast its own wireless network.
It can however, be connected to another router (including another AirPort) by Ethernet, and then, be configured to broadcast a wireless network with another Network Name and Security Type.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station as Extender to Airport Extreme Time Machine

I have tried this a few times, but to no avail: Tonight I purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station (AE) to set up as an extender to my Airport Extreme Time Capsule (AETC).  The Airport Utility finds the router and goes through set-up seemingly fine, with green lights on both.  Then shortly after (within a minute) the AE reboots on it's own, followed by the AETC rebooting (again, on it's own) and this occurs repeatedly.  I reset the AE completely and run through the set-up and the same thing occurs.  I've also done soft resets to the AETC.  Long and short of it - the restarting discontinues once I unplug the power cord from the AE.  Then the AETC resumes as it has - providing fine wifi and speed.  It appears the AE rebooting on its own makes the AETC reboot.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

howto - extending airport 802.11n networks
    Pre-Requistites
    1) Ensure all have most recent firmware - 7.7.3 for AC devices, 7.6.4 for 802.11n devices
    2) Have most recent Airport Utility (OS X 10.7 thru 10.9, use 6.3.2, IOS6/7 use 1.3.3)
    3) Only have the Primary Airport/TimeCapsule powered on for now
Set up the Primary/Anchor Airport Base Station
    1) Do this over ethernet - ensure that the Modem and TimeCapsule/Airport is connected on the WAN port
    2) You'll be prompted by Airport Utility to name the Network and the Base Station
Network is the SSID of the Wireless LAN
BaseStation is the name of the Airport/TimeCapsule
    3) You'll be prompted for a password - this will be for both the WLAN and the Base Station on initial setup
Note here - there are at least three passwords to worry about post setup
    a) BaseStation Management - in this how-to, this will be carried thru to the extended basestations
    b) WLAN Access
    c) Disk Access for TimeCapsule and AirDisk
They can be same or unique, up to you...
    Configure the Airport/TimeCapsule for WiFi/Network
    4) Select the named BS in Airport Utility - click the 'edit' button
    5) Review 'Base Station' Tab
    5a) BaseStation Name
5b) BaseStation Password - you can change this now if desired, this does not affect WLAN password
    6) Review Internet Tab
6a) set as appropriate for your network - e.g DHCP or other depending on needs
6aa) focus here is getting the primary BS set up first
6b) Click Internet Options - this is IPV6 setup - for now...
6ba) Set to Link-Local Only, click save, you can go back and change this later if needed
    7) Go to Wireless Tab
7a) Set Network Mode to "Create a wireless network"
    7b) Check Wireless Network Name
7c) Wireless Security - recommend WPA2 Personal - this is important as you'll need this later
7d) Wireless Password - the password entered in step 5b above is what is used here, feel free to modify or not - if so, note this
7e) disregard Enable Guest Network for now
    7f) Click Wireless Options
7g) ensure 5Ghz network name is unselected
7h) Country as appropriate - since I'm in California, I choose United States
7i) Leave 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Channels as "Automatic" for now, click save if needed
    8) Click Network Tab
8a) if this is your primary router - use DHCP and NAT
    8b) Click Network Options
    8c) DHCP Lease - I use 12 hours
8d) IPv4 DHCP Range - every here is a bit different, but my recommendation for most folks
    192.168.1.100 to 150
Use what works for you, keeping in mind that the AP Extreme, TimeCapsule, and 2012 Airport Express can handle 50 clients, max
8e) Ensure that Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol is selected
8f) can worry about Enable default host at: [] later, this is the DMZ'ed host
8g) can choose to enable IGMP Snooping or not - doesn't affect the primary setup
    8h) click save
TimeCapsule Only - for Airport Extreme, worry about AirDisk later
This is TimeMachine support, along with FileShares
    9) Select Disks - you should see a partitiion named "Data"
9a) ensure that Enable file sharing is selected
9b) ensure that Share disks over WAN is unchecked for now
    9c) Secure Shared Disks:
    Choices here -
device password - noted in step 5b above
disk password - this will be for all LAN clients that can see the Data Partitiion
accounts - you can set up separate users and passwords - this is beyond scope of this how-to
Recommendation if using as TimeMachine only, use a disk password - note this as you'll need it for timemachine on the clients
    Save Settings to the Airport/TimeCapsule
    10) Click the "update' button
    The Airport/TimeCapsule will restart
Everything now should show green and shiny - open a web browser and attempt to go to Apple/Google/Yahoo, to ensure that you've got network connectivity
Reviewing things in the Airport 6.3 utility, you should see your base station and the Internet - both with green status
Once done here, let's extend the Wireless Network
Note - again, it helps to be connected to the primary base station on ethernet, wireless makes things, erm, challenging
    11) with another decive - Mac/iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch or PC, ensure that Wireless LAN is working on the primary AP/Basestation
Once this is done, then proceed to the next step
Enable the "Extended" Airport - can be another TimeCapsule, Airport Express or Airport Extreme
For purposes of this discussion - assume all ore 802.11n capable at a minimum, so this applies towards more recent gear
    a) Airport Extreme AC (2013)
    b) Airport TimeCapsule AC (2013)
    c) Airport Express 2012 Dual-Band (Looks like AppleTV)
    d) Airport Extreme 802.11n 5th Gen, TimeCapsule 4th Gen
    e) Airport Express 802.11n - similar to the 802.11g variant, looks like a MacBook Pro power adapter
Assumptions here is that the extended airport is factory defaults - see link below for more info:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Once this is done, plug in the Airport that is intended for extending the wireless network
after about a minute or so, you should see a blinking orange light, this is normal...
In Airport Utility, you should see in the upper left hand, "Other Wi-Fi Devices (1)" - click this, if you don't see this, exit and restart Airport Utility
    12) clicking on the button, you should see an entry menu as "Airport Extreme xxxxxx", select this
    13) Once selected, you'll see "This Airport Extreme/Express/TimeCapsule will be set up to extend "Primary Base Station"
    14) Enter the name for this base station - it should be unique from the name of the Primary noted in step 5a
    15) Click "next"
    16) Should see "setting up this base station to wirelessly extend..."
you'll see some progress messages.. this is the two basestations handshaking....
If successful, you'll see the BaseStation named in step 14 as "is now wireless extending "base station named in (step 5a)"
STOP - the Airport is now extended, repeat steps 11 thru 16 for each addtional Airport
For advanced features - such as port forwarding, DMZ, IPv6 Tunnels, Back to my Mac, etc - perform this only on the Primary Base station outlined in steps 1 thru 8h
    Good Luck!

  • Using Airport Extreme base station as wireless Cable router and airtunes.

Can I replace my wired Roadrunner cable modem with a Apple Airport Extreme wireless 56g router removing the wired modem out of the picture?
I just have read and have not come to the complete conclusion that the Airport extreme base station is a standalone wireless router.
I would like this if it is a wireless standalone router as I want to but a pair of wireless airtunes router for music around the house keeping the Airport Extreme in my room where the airtunes routers would not be as I have the computer in my room and I have iTunes right there and would not need the airtunes routers in my computer room.

Can I replace my wired Roadrunner cable modem with a Apple Airport Extreme wireless 56g router removing the wired modem out of the picture?
The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) does NOT have a built-in DSL/Cable modem. You will still require a Cable modem in order to access your ISP's Internet service.
I just have read and have not come to the complete conclusion that the Airport extreme base station is a standalone wireless router.
The AEBS IS a wireless router, but it is NOT a combination wireless router & cable modem.

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station is not Available in AirPort Admin Utility

I don't see my APEX Base Station in the list in AirPort Admin Util. I can configure by opening by IP. I have no software firewall. I have plugged in directly to base station, and have reflash with 5.7 firmware. I am using 4.2 of AirPort Admin. I've Tried everything I can find in forums. Anyone else have issues?
    I'm using Mac OS 10.4.4

I have tried resetting it. It doesn't always work. Sometimes the base station is listed, and sometimes it is not. The base station is functioning though. I can access the newtork, It just doesn't show up in Admin Util.
I also have an AP Epress connected to AP Extreme via WDS. From the wired side, they either both show up or both do not, which is expected. When they don't show up on the Admin list, the Express also doesn't show up in iTunes from the wired side. Wireless clients don't seem to exhibit this problem.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station is not picked up by my Mac Bok Pro

I purchased a Airport Extreme Station, set it up, and everything worked fine.
We had a power outage and since then neither my Macbook Pro nor my other laptop sees the base station. I hard reset the unit, still no response. I hooked up the the base station to my Macbook Pro with the straight-through ethernet cable and yes there it was.
After I unplugged the cable, the airport could not locate the base station again. I have the latest firmware upgrade and Airport software upgrade.
I am running out of options and ideas - any help?

Perhaps try downloading the latest update and reload it into the Extreme. It is possible that something was corrupted during the power outage that is causing things to be a little bonkers. Use the Search in the top right of this window and look for "Airport Extreme Firmware". You may have to dig a little bit to find the most current but its there. Download it and install while connected via ethernet.

  • Airport Utility scans but does not see Airport Express

    Hi,
When I open Airport Utility it scans looking for devices and finds none. Meanwhile. the yellow light is blinking on AE.
We had Verizon over a week ago to change and set up a new wifi router, as the old one stopped working. The network name didn't change. Access to the web is fine, so there's nothing wrong with Airport. I can't figure it out.
    Thanks,

Try connecting your Mac to the AirPort Express with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to see it.

I am trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?
The Apple update Firmware for my Airport Extreme Base Station does not update for some reason? Help?
Additionally, I have an older version Airport Express that does not update with the newer Airport Utility Version 6.3 and asks me to download 5.6 to update? Is this worth it?
    Thanks

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.

  • Recovering Old Datas on New Drive + Setting Airport Extreme Base Station old and new ones

    Hello All,
    Situation:
    -iMac 24" Alu/2008/2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 2Go DDR2 SDRAM
-2 Airport Extreme Base Stations mushroom type,
-1 Airport Extreme Capsule Model: A1143
The original 320 Go Hard Drive of my iMac crashed few months ago. A "technician" installed a new Hard Drive 235 Go while trying to recover all datas from old one. Failed.
No back up. The old disc needs to be unlocked in a dustless atmosphere. Quite expensive at the moment.
I decided to install OS X from sratch with the original Install Disc delivered with my iMac.
    OS X is 10.5
Once on line I updated all pre-installed softwares. Among which Aiport Utility 5.6.1 today.
    Problem:
I would like to get bigger hard drive disc, 1To for example. Does this still exist for this iMac 2008 Alu ?
How can I do to get my iMac again to OS X 10.9 ?. Does this mean I need to buy all intermediate levels again ?
How do I get my softwares (the ones on the original Disc: Pack office, Pages, Numbers, etc ...) back on track again, since my iMac is now more like down to factory level ?
Extending my internet provider from the WiFi router via my 3 Airport Extreme Base Stations: 2 mushroom type that need OS X + Airport Utility softwares at a certain level, while the Capsule might need another level. Right now I tried to set up the 3 of them with this Aiport Utility and though they all recognize the provider network, I can never conclude to extend it with the Base Stations: it drops the case. (WDS trouble which I don't even know what it is, or the Base Station simply desapears from Airport Utility scan, ...)
Thank you all for you attention.
Your comments are welcome especially if you have any knowledge on these various subject.
Can't wait to read your piece of advice.
