Airport Extreme Blinking Amber But Internet Working Fine Multiple Status Messages

I have Airport Extreme 5.6.1.   It started blinking amber showing Airport did not have a valid Internet Address.   I was concerned about with changing anything if I could still connet.   Checked a forum and it suggested to go to sheck status and see the problem.   I did and now I have a new mesage.  No DNS server address.   I am hesitant about doing anything because if I do and lose internet connection I am really up a creek without a paddle.

Just to update.   I unplugged my modem for a short time.   When it powered up the light was green on my Airport Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme Flashing Amber - but internet connection is OK

I have the current generation of Airport Extreme, which has been working just fine, until tonight. It started flashing amber. My internet connection is OK, and in fact my desktop is connected to the internet thru the Airport Extreme via ethernet cable, so that pathway works (which rules out faulty cable between Airport and modem). But the amber light keeps flashing, and none of my devices that connect via WiFi can connect to the internet (to be clear, they can see my base station, but they cannot connect to the internet. The only device that can connect is my desktop, which again is connected to the base station via ethernet cable). I've done multiple power-cycles, and a hard re-set of the base station, same result. In Airport Utility, the error is "Your Apple Wi-Fi base station does not have a valid IP address", but assuming that this is the correct error (which I am doubting, since I am connected to the internet), there is no way for me to address it.
I have two Airport Express's on this network - needless to say, they are also showing up as problems in Airport Utility since their base station is amber.
BTW - I am running OSX 10.6.8 - OK, I'm a dinosaur. But just in case that was the problem, I tried to address this with the current Airport Utility from my iOS 7 iPad, but still no luck.
    Any advice?

Thanks, landrefl. Airport Utility IS telling me that there is an error, and the error is ""Your Apple Wi-Fi base station does not have a valid IP address". But that's my problem - I'm writing this now because I am connected to the internet, through the wired connection thru my Airport Extreme. So, although it is telling me what it thinks is the problem (""Your Apple Wi-Fi base station does not have a valid IP address"), that a) seems to be incorrect, and b) I don't know how I can change or correct it anyway.

  • Airport extreme blinking amber light error when connecting to new modem

I have just bought and installed a new modem gateway.  It is an Arris TG852G DOC 3.0 model with a built in WiFi router.
After connecting it and activating it through Comcast, I reset, then reconnected my airport extreme MD0331LL/A Model No. A1408 to the new Arris
modem, I am getting blinking amber lights on the base station.  I have internet connectivity, but I am still getting an amber light.  My wireless devices (ipad and iphones) all see the old network name and id and seem to work just fine.
When I scanned for my airport base station in my airport utility (version 5.6.1)  to try to resolve the error message I get
a message stating that the Airport Utility is not detecting any airport devices.
I cannot reset the default settings as these buttons do not work within the Airport Utility.
I suspect interference between the built in router in the Arris and I understand I need to operate it in bridge mode.  Can you please help me fix this.
The COMCAST people are extremely unhelpful, and stated that this is not their problem but a problem with my router
as they have provifded me  internet connectivity through the modem and the issue is my problem.

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme that way.
If yes, click on the AirPort Extreme and then click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking
If the message indicates that you need to configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode......
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and restart the AirPort Extreme
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you were using to configure the AirPort Extreme now
It would be a good idea to power off both the Arris gateway and the AirPort Extreme now
    Wait a minute
Start the Arris first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    You should be all set

  • WRT45GC - Not connecting to NTL Broadband, but internet works fine minus the router

I seem to have a problem try to get my WRT45GC to work as an accesspoint for my NTL connection.  If the modem is plugged directly into my PC via ethernet cable, internet works fine.  But if I plug my WRT45GC into the modem then have a direct connection to my pc from the router, i only get limited or no connectivity.
Also once this has been set up my laptop can pick up the wireless network but once again no internet.
I have been told different things by different people ie, the modem and router may have the same IP address, the router may not have DCHP enabled ( I dont have the IP address to log onto the router) please can someone help
If i unplug the router and have the modem connecting directly to the pc, internet works fine again.

if u have a cable connection....follow the steps below
    1) connect the computer to one of the LAN ports on the router...and connect the modem to the router's internet port.
    2) check the ip add on the computer . to check the ip add go to start -> run -> cmd -> ipconfig...ensure that u have an ip add of 192.168.1.x and default gateway 192.168.1.1
    2) access the router using http://192.168.1.1 . Keep the username blank and the default password is "admin".
    3) go to the "mac add clone" subtab , enable it and click clone your pc's mac..save the settings....do a power cycle
    4) go to the "wireless" tab , change the ssid , channel - 1 or 11.
If this does not work for u , revert back with the details - ISP name , cable / DSL , internet ip add off of the status page on the router....

  • We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
    Thank you!

    Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

  • Airport extreme flashing amber but still have internet

My airport extreme is flashing amber but I still have an internet connection. Should I be concerned?

When I opened Airport Utility, it gave me a message that firmware needed to be updated (to 7.6).  However, clicking on continue or search for update (can't remember exactly what the option was), the utility searched endlessly for the update. I'd read on a previous discussion about unplugging the AirPort Extreme for 10 seconds. I did this while the airport was stuck in search mode. Sure enough that worked.

  • Airport extreme connected to Time Warner works fine.Added airport to extend signal, as net access poor in bedroom, not that far away, but doesnt help

Airport Extreme does great job off the Time Warner cable modem.  Net access has been weak in the bedroom about 30 feet away and around a corner.  Sdded airport as aan extender midway between but net access still bad.  Tried moving the airport closer to bedroom and even in bedroom but still net signal from the modem is weak.  Madenng. Do I need a second Extreme?

This is a good news and bad news situation.
The good news is that the type of insulation likely installed in the walls of your home has a metal foil layer on at least one side of the insulation and probably both. So, you have good insulation.
The bad news is that this type of insulation will block most of the wireless signal that is trying to pass through. So, I doubt that an AirPort Extreme as an extender will do significantly better than the AirPort Express.  If the store will allow you to return the Express and try an Extreme though, it could not hurt to try.
It might work better, and might not. The only way that you will know for sure is to try it out in your home.
If the Extreme still does not do the job, then you will need to look at running an Ethernet cable from the "main" AirPort Extreme to the bedroom. An electrician can do a nice job of hiding the wires....if you do not want to do this yourself......but the cost may be steep depending on the number of obstacles involved.
A possible option, if the Ethernet cabling cannot be run, is to take a look at pair of Ethernet Over Powerline (EOP) adapters to send the signal over the AC powerlines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you already have the wiring in place.....you just need the adapters. In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you decide to try EOP adapters, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance before you buy.

  • Not connecting to Music Store or Software Updates (but Internet works fine)

About a month ago, I moved in to a new apartment and set up a new cable internet connection. After a very frustrating installation process (Netgear is not very Mac-friendly), the Internet worked. A couple days later, I realized I couldn't get onto the iTunes Music Store. It just tries for a while and then says it can't reach it and for me to check my Network Diagnostics.
I tried to get to the music store when I was at work on an Ethernet connection (as opposed to my usual wireless), but that didn't work either. I also realized today that my Software Updates aren't working, because they cannot connect either. It just tells me to click on Network Diagnostics, which I always do to no avail.
Also tonight, I realized I only have 4.5 GB space left on my computer. This computer is less than a year old, and I don't see how this is possible. I deleted a lot of things, and that didn't make any difference. Could I possibly have a virus? I thought Macs didn't even get viruses!? What should I do?

I got this message from you, but I still have the same problem of not being able to connect to the iTunes store, software updates, Safari, CDDB, Help, Southwest's Ding, my weather widget, and several other things. I found a post you did in July where you helped someone else who it sounded like had the same problems that I am having. However, I tried your approaches to that -- isolating the problem (it affects all accounts on this computer), typing in that number (17.254.3.183) in Safari (says the server stopped responding), and now I really hope I don't have to back up everything and start over. I think this started when I moved to this apartment and set up a new Comcast cable internet account. I have been able to live with it because I have a computer at work and spend most of my time there anyway, but at times when I want to burn CDs, it really drives me crazy. Do you recommend taking it to the Apple store or would you be able to help me? Thanks.

  • Internet works fine, but can't see Airport Base Station w/ Airport Utility

I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell Latitude laptop with linksys wireless-n PCMCIA card. I have a Cable Modem running to a Linksys router (cloning a MAC address), running to the Airport Extreme Base Station. Internet works fine (as I type this), but Airport Utility cannot see the Airport Base Station. This has happened repeatedly after hard reset and re-configuration of Airport Extreme Base Station.
Do I have a bad piece of hardware?

After doing a lot of research, this appears to be a pretty common problem for Windows users.
The only thing that has worked for me is to go into the Airport Utility, and under the file menu, click on configure other. Then enter the LAN IP address of your airport extreme. I think the default is 10.0.1.1, although I have a separate router between my cable modem and my airport express providing IP addresses, so mine was different. It didn't always work at first, but now almost every time my base station disappears, if I do this it can be found again.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11ac wifi stops working - requires reboot

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11ac which has worked fine for me for several months.  However, in the last 2 weeks, my wifi disappears from all devices about once every other day.  The light is green on the Extreme, but no devices see the wifi.  After a power cycle, the wifi comes back up and works fine, for a while (24-48 hours)
The Apple AirPort Extreme 802.11ac is running
    software version is 7.7.3
Router Mode is OFF (Bridge mode)
    DHCP is disabled too.
2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channel selection is set to auto.
I have no usb disks plugged in.
Is anyone else having this issue?

The light is green on the Extreme, but no devices see the wifi.
Can you test something by ethernet?? Is it totally wireless or has internet dropped out as well?
    This is important.
What modem router is it plugged into.. as some are very flakey with the AC model airports?
Have you tried a full factory reset... and clean new setup?
This is required now and then. Especially if anything Yosemite is in the network.. please do the following even if you don't use Yosemite it can help.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer or iOS running the latest utility.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen6 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better since the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is a problem for you as bridged you will need to set dhcp reservation in the main router.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.

  • HT4600 i Get a solid amber light sometimes, bUT all works fine. I have to unplug the airport extreme to reset it and then it turns green and starys that way for a week or so and then turns back to amber. why is this and how do i fix it ?

I gat a solid amber light once a week on my airport extreme, but all works fine. I have to unplug it to reset it and then the light turns back to green and it is good for another week and then it happens again. why is this and what can i do to fix it ?

Solid amber on an AirPort Extreme is an indication that the internal power supply is starting to act up.
If the AirPort Extreme is in warranty, it shouid be exchanged for another AirPort Extreme.
If the AirPort Extreme is several years old, keep any eye on things. When/if you find that you are having to reset the device several times a week, it's time to start thinking about a replacement device, as the end is near.

  • Blinking amber, "no wireless networks found", rescanning, but internet work

OK - so, everything was fine at home with my airport extreme, hardwired to the modem and my Mac Pro. Wireless worked fine on laptop & iPhone. Today I bought an Airport Express so I can stream music to my stereo. Ran Airport Utility and POOF - blinking amber lights everywhere, utility asking me to rescan over and over because it says I now no longer have any wireless networks - even though the internet works fine. Blinking yellow on base station, blinking yellow on express, yet utility just tells me to rescan, and everything else is grayed out. Banging my head against a wall. Anyone have an idea?

You configure the Express via AirPort Utility. If you cannot see the Express when you open the AU app, click on the AirPort icon (of your Mac) on the upper menu. See if the Express network shows up there. If so, log into that network and open AU again to configure it. If that does not work, get an ethernet cable and connect the Express to your computer. If the Express still does not show up on AU, do a hard reset and try again. Once in AU, you can configure it to try and join or extend your network.

  • Airport/Internet works fine - AOL/AIM/YAHOO Messenger Don't Connect

    Hi All -
I just bought the Imac with the Intel 2 Processor. Everything works fine but the chat function and AOL. I have a Motorola SBG900 wireless cable modem, and Airtport Express. I get the same problem regardless of whether I use the Airport Express. I try to log on and it looks for the connection, then times saying it can't find connection, etc. The regular internet works fine, always has. I tried reloading AOL for MAC and that didn't work.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi Chicago67,
The Motorola you have is configurable. It will need the pors open.
    The How http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Motorola/SBG900/iChat.htm
The ports at iChat 10 are wrong (the rest are OK)
iChat 10 should read port 5678 in both and a new iChat 11 should be port 16384 to 16403 (They seem to have mistakenly added both lines into one)
From the Pics that are shown I can not tell if this device has UPnP.
IF you are doing this Port Forwarding and continue to Use DHCP the IP you point the ports to may not always be your computer if the DHCP leases get renewed.
Setting up Static routing is best if using Port Forwarding.
This means truning Off DHCP in the Motorola and chnging the seting on the Mac in System Preferences > Network > Airport > TCP/IP tab the Manually.
The info that was shown for Using DHCP is best typed in in the Manually text fields that become Active.
(The IP has to be in the range of the Modem)
Subnet mask should be the samne as it was.
The DNS servers should also be typed in.
The "router" IP is the same as it was which in fact is the Modem's IP

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!
    -Mike Gray
