Airport Extreme BS (Gigabit) + MBP issues

Today when I tried to get on the internet, my MacBook Pro would not recognize my AEBS. It cannot find it in the AirPort Utility or when I type the name of my network and password into Airport from the Menu Bar. My PowerBook is running fine on the same network. It recognizes and joins the network when it wakes from sleep and it sees the AEBS in Airport Utility.
Last week my MacBook Pro experienced a kernel panic while using Safari over a different wireless network. My best guess is that I may have a bad Airport Express card... is there any way to run a test on it to find out?
Also, my MBP never remembers my networks that I visit requently.... all of them are hidden networks and I have to retype the network and password every time I visit that same network. This is not the case with my PowerBook... and I have no clue why.
Any help is appreciated.
Computer Stats:
PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 10.4.10
MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 10.4.9
Just ask if you need any more info about my computers or about my AEBS.

There are a couple of hardware tests you can run. One is the Apple Hardware Test, which is on one of your install discs--if it's like mine, you hold down "D" to boot to the test.
If you have Applecare, you hould have a Tech Tool Delux disc. It also tests the hardware.
If you get an error code on either test, it will indicate a hardware problem. You can try to google the error code and sometimes you can find out what it is, but in general you have to ask Apple.
I have been discovering that there are a lot of minor differences in how my MBP works compared to how my iBook works. I even did an erase and install because of a kernal panic when trying to do a software update, and I am still working at getting all my preferences set right. There's even oddities installing my printer driver of all things. If you are new to the MBP like I am, it may just take a call or two to tech support to get everything set up properly.
Good luck!

  • Airport Extreme USB disk password issue fix ETA?

Many people who have a USB drive connected to their Airport Extreme 802.11n have had problems where it repeatedly asks for the password to connect to the USB disk, but never allows you access until you reboot the router. This has been an issue for some time that I've had to just endure intermittently. Is there any ETA on Apple FINALLY fixing that issue?
Also, is there any relief for anyone that bought this Airport Extreme w/o gigabit ethernet a month and a half ago and got screwed by Apple ONCE AGAIN for being one of their early-adopters? Its really exhausting having Apple bring out a new version that should have been the first version w/o any notice of any kind. Personally, since all of Apple's computers had gigabit ethernet ports I assumed their flagship router supported their computers. I didn't realize until after it was too late. :-/ They should have just said "hey, here's a crippled router. you can buy this now even though its half finished or we'll bring out the real one for the same price in a few months. thanks -steve" so I could have gotten a crappy linksys to hold me over. :-/
Anywho...any firmware updates in the works to let me predictably connect to my USB drive or am I forgotten and unappreciated again?
(PS - Thanks for iPhone video out! That should have been in the original release and I was really worried that iPhone2 was going to come out in October or something and have that w/ the 16GB storage it should have sported too. :-D )
    -Alex

Oops. This shouldn't have been in the "for Windows" section, sorry...didn't know they were segregated this way. :-| Why would anyone buy an Airport to use with Windows machines? :-/ That's like putting a beautifully manicured luxury brick roadway through a ghetto--it may look great, but it's only going to be used to transport crap.
(before I have to explain this to someone, lol, crap=the viruses and trojans and spy/adware that make surfing the web almost impossible--or the myriad programs that are needed to stop it that suck up so much precious resources that it's almost better to let the viruses in and the IE popups pop away)

  • Airport Extreme 802.11ac configuration issue

    Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can help me configure my new Airport Extreme. I have a new Haswell Macbook Air and I thought they would just use 802.11ac automatically. My problem is the Macbook Air is showing as connected with 802.11n, so I can't benefit from faster TM backups for example.
I've updated the router and the computer to the latest firmware/software versions.
Any tips would be much appriciated!

The MCS Index value is telling me that the connection between the MBA & the Extreme is only using two spatial streams. I would expect that the MBA can support three or even four streams connections with the new 802.11ac Extreme. Not sure why yours is not. At this point it is hard to tell if the issue is with the MBA or the Extreme ... or both.
For example, my 2012 MacBook Pro is currently connected to my 4th generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme with MCS value of 23. That would be a three stream connection and I am currently getting 450 Mbps for the Transmit Rate.
I would suggest, if possible, taking both to your local Apple Store to have them checked out.

  • Airport extreme network and bizarre issue...

Thanks for any and all help but let's start with the setup...
Airport Extreme (dual band) is my main station connected to the modem and also to an imac (wired).
Two airport expresses both using the extend wireless network option
Exp. 1 is connected to the TV through ethernet
Exp. 2 extends wireless network. Used to extend wireless connection to the outside
Now here is my issue. Up until last week my main station was a first generation airport extreme n (fast ethernet).
I tried to add access to the bottom floor with this station and hook up an old pc (no wireless card) to it with ethernet. This works without a problem with an airport express but NOT with the bigger brother...
It will work for about fifty odd seconds (internet and everything), it even has a green light, then boom loses the connection for about 30 seconds (blinking orange). Then back to green... This over and over again. I reset it a couple of times, have even tried to change the firmware to no benefit. I thought maybe it had a reception issue and moved it next to the new main station. Same problem...
    Any ideas?
Years ago, I did try to setup a WDS and failed miserably and would like to skip the experience. Are they easier and is that the way to go? If yes, can a relay station (the exp. 1) still send data to the tv through the ethernet port?
Thanks for any and all help.

Here a small update.... I went through the assistant and it took me through a couple of steps and I think at the very end I read setting up WDS. I could be wrong but here a protocol from the affected station.

  • Airport Extreme with Gigabit Ethernet - Does it have jumbo frame support?

Please, can I get definite answer to this question? I do not need speculations as I read some reviews already. Can we have Apple finally put complete specification of the product rather than "popular one" with attachement of protocol numbers?
I just need simple answer possibly from Apple engineering team to the following questions:
    1. Does current Airport Extreme have support for jumbo frames (everything above 1500bytes per frame)? (if one does not know what that is them perhaps understanding acronym "MTU" can help a bit)
    2. If there is support then what is the maximum supported size of jumbo frame? (Some products do not go above 6k and I read some statistics that traffic somwhere is usually 66% at about 4k jumbo frames and above that there is not much...)
    3. If there is no support then does Apple plan on update for this (firmware or hardware) in the future?
Please, do not tell me that someoene ran something with jumbo frame and it worked as I tried yesterday LaCie Ethernet drive with supposedly setup (I set it myself) of jumbo frame 4k and on soft reboot of the drive it worked when connected to Airp[ort Extreme, but after hard reboot the disk is not visible anymore. I will recover the disk, but I need to understand if I have chance of using jumbo frames that tremendously improve performance with large files (e.g. try movies stored for AppleTV on network drive) when using Airport Extreme with its gigabit Ethernet... or that is just Gigabit Ethernet for product marketing purposes only.
I just need reliable answer by product specification that should be on paper at Apple, but it is not so I hope that one of guys here has access to some engineering team.
    Thank you,
    Maciek Samsel

  • 2 airport extremes, PC and MBP...

Hello all...  Thaks in advance for al your help..   I have 2 airport extremes throughout my house, and the wifi seems to work pretty good.  I have a desktop PC hard wired from a an 8 port switch which in turn in hard wired to one of the expresses.    My pc can not detect airport utilities (keep in mind, hardwired)...  also, I want to add an external hard drive so we can stream movies on the i pad and such.  Would it matter which of the 2 airport extremes I place the external hard drive onto??  Thanks.. Richard

Ok thanks for providing the network details. I believe I understand your configuration now. As far as the Extreme base station they should all be good with them all interconnected by Ethernet. The only issue I see is the Extreme in the laundry room as far as it signal quality. If there are large metal boxes (washer & dryer) these are not going to let the Wi-Fi signal travel very far and could case some of the signal to "echo" back towards the base station.
However before making any changes it would be a good idea to establish a signal quality baseline of your existing setup. From there we can make some suggested changes to see if any help improve the overall bandwidth for streaming.
The other area we will look into will be data transfer rates between some of your network equipment to see where there may be some bottlenecks.
Let's stay with signal quality for now. What we are going to want to measure is the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at various locations where you will use network clients for either or both Internet access and for streaming.
Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on how to take these measurements. The will work best if yoiu have a laptop. The goal is to get a SNR reading of 25+ dB at each of these locations. This will tell us that you are getting decent siqnal quality at each of the locations that do. Please post back your results.

  • 5th Gen Airport Extreme AirPlay, Printing, Streaming Issues

I had a fourth generation Apple Airport Extreme router.  It worked flawlessly with my two Airport Express devices with airplay and printing.  I also have the second generation Apple TV that had no issues.
I gave my old Extreme to a friend and I upgrade to the fifth generation Apple Airport Extreme router and I keeps loosing airplay streaming and printing with my Airport Express devices and Apple TV keeps loosing connection to my iTunes using home sharing.
All Apple Airport devices are running firmware 7.5.2.  I have started from scratch two times by wiping all the devices with default settings.  I have played with the different wireless modes on the router.  All wireless modes cause the same issues.  The weird thing is that the devices do have Internet access, show a green light, and are seen by the Airport Utility, but they just loose the ability to stream audio / video and print.  I see all the devices connected to the Extreme router in the wireless statistics however they become unpingable when those services disappear on me.  Rebooting the router fixes the issue temporarily or sometimes renewing Apple Express DHCP in the Apple utility helps.
I was going to return the router, but it feels more like a firmware problem that needs to be fixed since the Internet is always working.  Any other suggestion out there?

I agree with you, this could be a firmware problem. But worst case it could be hardware problem too. I am actually into my fourth Airport Extreme Fifth generation. All have the same problem. Fisrt few minutes, the router is fine. But after 5-10 mins, the upload speed drop down really low. Then connection would be lost intermittently. But when I reset the router, or even quickly disconnect and connect the power line, the connection and the upload speed came back normal, although that again only last for several minutes as before.
All the same problem with FOUR fifth gen Airport Extreme. And I bought them from different places too..two from Perth, Australia, one from Brunei and the other one was ordered the US through a local dealer.
The funny thing is that when I use my cheapo Trendnet router, the connection and upload speed was as stable as a rock. No drop whatsoever so it is not the fault of my ISP but the Extreme itself.
This issue has been really annoying me. Why can't Aplle fix it?

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n connectivity issues with Windows Vista

I recently purchased the 802.11n airport exterme base station and set it up using my MacBook Pro laptop. During the configuration process I set the security to be WEP enabled since there are other computers on my network, one of which has only an 802.11b wifi card, that can only accept WEP security protocol. The set up worked great and I was surfing on the internet with my Mac in no time.
When I go to connect to the 802.11n extreme base station with my Windows Vista desktop PC, I cannot get any type of connection. I re-entered the Network SSID to match that on the AE base station and re-entered the WEP enabled password.
Is there a compatibility issue between the Airport Extreme Base Station and Windows Vista? I realize that the base station works on XP based PCs but not sure why it could not work on a Vista machine. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo

Upon further review I determined the flaw with my earlier attempts to set up the airport exterme base station with my winodws vista desktop pc. I realized that I should not use a WEP key but rather a WPA key since the wireless adpater connected to my desktop is a wireless G enabled adapter that can handles WPA and WPA2 security.
Therefore, no issues with Vista and the airport extreme base station. Works great.

  • Airport Extreme / Apple TV Connectivity issue -HELP!!

I am able to enter my WEP password on the Apple TV, and it connects to my wireless network. But, the next day, it doesn't show up in my list of devices on iTunes. I look at the setings on the apple TV, and it says I am not connected to network, and I have to enter password again. What setting do I need to adjust on the Airport Extreme or the Apple TV?

I have the same issue. Wish I could help.... It is ridiculously annoying to have to put in the password every day, yet it is all I can do!
I dont understand... even if it drops the connection to the TC, why cant it reconnect on its own like computers do?

  • Airport Extreme N Enabler Instal Issue

I just bought the Airport Extreme N Enabler and downloaded it. Where I tried to install it, a message said I did not have the right hardware for it. I have everything that apple says I need to install yet it still says I do not meet the hardware requirements for the update. Any suggestions?

RE: I have one of the original macbook pros
The original Macbook Pros have Intel Core Duo processors. The second generation have the Core 2 Duo processors. You list a C2D in your signature line, but if you do in fact have an original MBP with the CD processor, you *do not* have n-capable wireless hardware.
Check Apple menu > About this Mac, what does it list for Processor?

  • Currently using AirPort Extreme but it has issues

I use an iMac running Lion.  About 3-4 days ago the AirPort Extreme was blinking yellow .. I looked at cable modem and it was fine .. so I went to Utilities, clicked the AirPort icon and it said I needed an update.  Everything worked well but then I got the yellow light again .. after clicking into AirPort icon and finding nothing amiss I looked at the AirPort 'box' itself and the light was back to green.  Is this a signal that the AirPort Extreme is dying?  Do I get another Extreme or go for the Express?  Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the status light is staying a steady green, then it would be operating normally. If it continues to randomly flash yellow, with no errors being reported, then you may want to look at the base station logs to see what it "sees" are the issues that are causing it.
To get to these logs: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logging & Statistics tab > Logging and Statistics > Logs tab

  • HH3 Airport Extreme DNS / router address issues

I have a HH3 hard wired (ethernet) from HH port 1 to the small circle port on the Airport Extreme.  The AE extends the network around the house via Airport express and we have done this by creating a new network so we can connect either to the HH or to the AEBS network.  The AEBS is set to bridge mode but wrong DNS and router addresses are given out by both HH and AEBS when the AE is turned on (192.1.68.1.2 instead of 192.168.1.254).  We can bypass the issue by setting these manually but would prefer not to have to.  If I turn the AE off, the HH issues the correct DNS and router addresses.  I am asking the same question on the Apple forums but not everyone there is familiar with the HH.

Bizarrely, having tried every configuration on the AE, reminded of something vofsanity said to me in a previous thread, I unplugged a powerline extender and the problem seems to have fixed itself!

  • External HDs connected to Airport Extreme and Imovie / Iphoto issues

I recently purchased a WD mac edition "my book" hardrive in order to store all my imovie, iphoto and itunes files externally. I connected the hard drive to my airport extreme base station but was unable to move my imovie files to the hard drive. Instead I received some derivation of the following message - "volume not compatible." After being transferred to a number of different people at apple support, I was finally told that the imovie, iphoto etc... are not compatible with hard drives that are connected wirelessly. I cannot believe that this is the case (presumably imovie files can be saved on timecapsule). I would be most grateful if someone could help me out here.

I was finally told that the imovie, iphoto etc... are not compatible with hard drives that are connected wirelessly. I cannot believe that this is the case
Nor can I. Files are files, some are bigger than others but to a hard disk, they're all the same.
I would presume that you don't get this message when connecting your My Book directly to the computer's USB port?
Apple Support simply couldn't have understood you correctly. I wouldn't expect to use iMovie or iPhoto to manipulate remotely stored files, but merely copying them for archival purposes is a completely legitimate use for the external HD.
This makes no sense. Perhaps you could post your question in an iLife forum.

  • Airport Extreme (N) wireless strength issues

I use an airport extreme (N) router to network my macs. I currently run a network of 2 imacs and 2 macbooks, all working fine and dandy. The problem is i have a mac mini which i've hooked up as my media centre to my hifi and plasma. I live in a 3 storey house, the router is on the top floor, the mac mini is in the bottom floor. The mac mini is set up to the network and the wirless icons strength is on mac or middling, but the connection is always very slow or non-existent, i cant even download any updates. All the other computers work fine, i've even tried the macbooks on the bottom floor and wireless signal is fine, but not for the mini. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the discussions!
The "bars" on the AirPort icon at the top of your computer screen are not a very good indicator of the actual signal strength available at a given location and they tell you nothing about the signal quality or noise levels.
I would suggest that you download iStumbler on one of your laptops and use the application to get a good look at the actual signal strength and noise on your network. Move the laptop to the original location of the Mac Mini to get a read on things there.
I suspect that you will find that the wireless signal is far too weak downstairs for a good wireless connection. That means you must either find a new location for the Mini by experimenting or you could consider adding an AirPort Express to your network to "extend" the strength of the wireless signal in the downstairs area.

  • 2011 Mini Gigabit Speed not possible with Airport Extreme

I am unable to connect my 2011 Mac Mini to my Airport Extreme at Gigabit speeds.  If I use a Motorola SBG6580 as a router I am able to achieve Gigabit speed.  If I use my Airport Extreme or my Airport Express (both new in 2012), I am immediately kicked back to 100 Mbit speeds.
I have already eliminated the wiring as possibility.
Anyone have any suggestions?  Am I just out of luck if I want to use Apple to Apple devices?  I only noticed this after upgrading to Mavricks, is this possibly the answer?

    Hello woodmeister50,
I think I found the root cause this morning.  I took my wife's MBP to all my network outlets in my house.  All connect at gigabit speed, execpt for that one outlet.  It connects at 100 Mbit.  I switched the position on the main switch, same result.  I think something is wrong with the wiring in the wall, although it is marked as CAT 5e.  I may have to rerun that outlet.  Who woudl have thought...
    Thanks again for the responses.
