Airport Extreme: Can it be linked with express?

I like the airplay option that comes with express.  I am surprised that the Extreme and Time capsule do not come with this simple option.  I already have express and I want to be able to use my hard drive(s) wirelessly.
Also, can I directly wire my desktop to the Airport extreme with an ethernet cable?

Actually, it is NOT a simple option as it would require a complete redesign of either the Extreme or Time Capsule to include the audio hardware provided in the Express. However, I would agree with you that it would be nice option to have this feature with all Apple routers.
I already have express and I want to be able to use my hard drive(s) wirelessly.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the USB port on the AirPort Express for this as it doesn't support external USB HDDs.
Also, can I directly wire my desktop to the Airport extreme with an ethernet cable?
Yes. You can connect your desktop, via Ethernet, to any of the available LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme.

Sorry, but no. The only Apple router with an audio output jack is the AirPort Express.

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • Can I use my 2010 AirPort Extreme as a range extender with a new AirPort Extreme?

I want to use an existing AirPort Extreme (2010 model) with a new AirPort Extreme to extend the range and signal strength into a shop. They are different designations, one n and the other ac. Are they compatible. I need to know before I buy the new router.

The new AirPort Extreme will provide an ac,n,g,b compatible wireless signal.
The existing AirPort Extreme can be configured to extend the n,g,b signal, but it cannot extend the ac signal.

  • Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled)

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.
    6. Open airport utilities.
         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!!

  • Airport Extreme vs. D-link

I'm trying to remain one of the faithful (Windows-free home since 1984) and I'll soon have 2nd MacBook to go with the one I bought last month, both wanting to use 802.11 connections. I have an original Airport graphite model that's been faithful and still working fine with the MacBook and my old iBook and occasional trasient Win laptops, mating with a separate firewall/router and cable modem. Works fine for internet as it's all faster than the cable moden, but I do notice the .11b speed in a big printing job or file transfer. That's going to be more noticeable when I upgrade the wife's non-wireless old Powerbook to a MacBook as she does more printing and file trasfers (works from Home).
So, the question of the day is - Airport Extreme vs. D-Link? D-link because they do management via standard browser interface and generally seem to support (or at least don't exclude) Apple users. Here are the key tradeoffs in my mind:
    - spec sheets seems to say the same things...no winner there, but it's what they DON'T say that worries me!
    - $195 + 5 weeks for an AEBS vs $29.99 after rebate for a D-Link WBR-1310 on Amazon today. yikes! Does this mean Apple is selling all they can make, or that they're going out of the business? (Apple Store also quotes 5 weeks)
    - Amazon star ratings: 1 for the D-link, 4.5 for the AEBS...hummm, that tells a story!
    - Downloaded manual for the D-Link described the setup, and it's a little geeky - well maybe a lot geeky - but I don't know how much better or worse the AEBS is, tho I'd guess a lot better, although Amazon reviewers and my other Apple experience so AEBS will be a lot better. For $150 price difference and the 5 weeks difference in shipping time can I probably get it to work?
    - Simultaneous .11b and .11g connections-can anyone comment? No product data I can find from either company will say they will do a and g AT THE SAME TIME, although I believe they will both do both. This matters to most to my iBook that's basic .11b Airport only.
    - Range/speed performance? They both make the same standard 802.11g claim about 150 feet range, but I live in a tiny house so I'm really more interested in RELIABILITY of that performance and interference problems, since I can also see networks from 3 of my neighbors. (Yes, mine is password protected but one of the neighbor's isn't )
    - the D-Link includes fireall/router, DNS and access point which I could use to replace my old firewall and have one less device to worry about. The AEBS has modem, USB printer, downstrean LAN port, and DNS server that I don't have a use for. Seems like I'm paying for capability I don't need, although I guess the modem could be used for a backup to the cable modem - can it easilly do so?
I understand as well as anyone all the emotional & qualitative arguments for choosing Apple, but no company is perfect. For the relatively huge price differential in this case - is the Apple AEBS worth the difference?
    Thanks,
MacBook 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual USB iBook, G3 PowerBook, ruby iMac (PowerPC, Mac Plus, IIe)

I'll speak to availability of AEBS.
    1. My university bookstore just a few days ago received their shipment of AEBS. They've been waiting for them for many weeks now and finally it has come in.
    2. I bought a refurbished AEBS from the Apple online store last week and it was shipped within two days. When I received mine, it had some issues with it. I called up AppleCare, explained it to them and they determined it was a defective unit. The technician said that considering it was a refurbished unit, they decided it was better not to repair it again and rather will be sending me a brand new AEBS. I called up AppleCare again to see when they'll be sending the unit and according to the Disptach agent, they have already shipped out the brand new AEBS to me (although the online status of that Repair order # says "Shipment pending.").
My conclusion right now is that the AEBS is in stock. The reason it was out of stock for a long time had to do with Apple needing to update the AEBS to eliminate some materials in it that was no longer allowed in products sold in the European Union. That affected AEBS sales worldwide, my understanding is.

  • I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to extend my airport extreme signal to another airport extreme can this be done? I have tried several time using the automated set up but it keeps failing... I have selected every possible security/password encryption level... What am I doing wrong? If it os possible where can I find step by step instructions? Please & Thank you!

The challenge with the older round AirPort Extremes are that they are "g" wireless devices.
When you configure them for WDS, the speed on the wireless network is cut in half...and probably will not have the bandwidth required to stream video reliably from either AirPort Extreme since both are affected by the WDS setup.
There is not an "automated" setup for WDS. You have to do this manually on both AirPort Extremes. Unfortunately, it is not an easy configuration and it's easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again.
Apple's instructions for WDS are here if you want to give it a try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
It is possible that it might work. Keep us posted on your progress
Adding a single AirPort Express will unfortunately not help. You have to have "n" wireless devices at all router points.

  • Airport extreme connects to router fine, but express doesn't

    Hi,
    So here is my setup:
Router -> Ethernet cable -> Airport Extreme = Wifi
This works absolutely fine. My problem is that I use an airport express to boost the extreme signal, and it's not working.
I get two errors, "Internet connection" and "No DNS Servers".
But after reading up on this, people are saying it's a problem with the communication between the express and the router.
But the airport extreme is communicating perfeclty fine with the router.
Any ideas would be very helpful,
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I probably can't help much, but I have occasionally had the same problem. You might try going to System Preferences>Network and look at your Airport connection. See if the diagnostics can help.
    Good luck!

  • Have Pixus and 3rd gen Airport extreme. Unable to replace with 5th gen airport extreme

I have Pixus and a 3rd generation Airport extreme . Unable to replace with 5th generation airport extreme. Problem?

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I assume that Pixus has provided you with a modem that provided an Ethernet connection to your 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then anytime you change networking hardware, it is a good idea to completely recycle power on all of the networking components.
    Please try the following:
Power-down the Pixus modem, AEBSn, and computer(s); leave them powered off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it sufficient time to initialize.
Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: It may continue to flash amber. This is ok, as it may just require some additional configuration settings, like wireless security to attend to.)
    Power-up the computer(s).
Network clients connected to the AEBSn, either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the Pixus modem. Please post back your results.
