Airport Extreme can see networks, can't connect to any

I recently bought an iMac G4 (1Ghz, 17") on eBay and am having problems getting the Airport Extreme card to connect to any network. It came with 10.5.1 installed and I've updated it to Leopard 10.5.8
I'm a bit of newbie with this Mac, but am learning quickly and I've tried to do my due diligence research prior to posting. I think I've tried every solution I've found recommended on forums for others with my problem.
Here's the basic info on what I've tried (by themselves and various combinations):
-changing the channel the network operates on.
-changing from WEP to WPA
-changing to no security at all
-changing to manual DHCP setup
-disabling Wireless-g only to allow b & g, and I've tried allowing only g
-I tried moving AppleAirport.kext to the desktop to let the system rebuild it with a restart - it was not rebuilt so I moved it back in and restarted again
-reset your router
-made sure router firmware was up to date
-creating a new network location
-went to Library > Preferences to delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist but there were no files with those names in that folder
None of these options changed any response to the ways I've tried to connect to the internet.
It connects fine through the router with an ethernet cable. With this option it takes the network address 192.168.1.5
I also tried to connect to my neighbor's open network, with that network it will either timeout or ask me for a WEP password, which isn't needed.
These are the errors I get when trying to connect to my own network wirelessly:
-When I go through Network Setup Assistant, I get the error: "The password you entered is invalid." Even though I know it is correct (checked and rechecked to make sure all keys were working in a text file).
-When I go through System Preferences > Network I get a Connection Timeout every time it tries to connect.
-When I go through Network Diagnostics through Safari, it can't find any Apple Wireless Devices to work with or it gives me a connection timeout.
My iPod Touch 2nd Generation has never had a problem connecting to this router or the neighbor's open network.
Neither have any of my three Dell laptops.
AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available
If it matters, I've got an Actiontec router and I'm connecting to Verizon FiOS.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations. I guess if the Airport Extreme card [or software] won't work I'll just have to try a USB network adapter (want to avoid this as this iMac only has USB 1.1).

Hi there!
Were any software install and restore discs included with the computer to support
the license and ownership, maintenance and help upkeep the computer's OS X?
Not sure where to begin in resolve the connection issues you have presented,
since I am almost under siege in my offline life with problems others foist on me.
Your issue may be in part due to a scenario where enabling WEP can causing
an issue of a self assigned IP address; the address sometimes may be just a
default and not that of the router's giving one to the computer. You can some-
times reset and hope the router can give you a new different IP address or DNS.
There usually is something else to this, if that is the case.
However, to make sure the computer itself is in a good state of health, and you
have some of the basic means at your disposal, (or to know what you have) is
why I am replying. And once that is mostly a certainty, to see if the settings to
choose the AirPort as a viable Network choice in the System Preferences, with
wireless on top of the available options open to the computer. You can drag in
order of desired connection type, the Ethernet, dialup, Airport, etc - means of
making or sustaining a connection in the Network panel. If these items are not
correctly chosen, the available wireless Airport won't work. And the status of
the Airport connection won't be visible in the main menubar header either.
Have you been through some of the several Apple Support documents on topic?
• Mac OS X: Connect to the Internet, troubleshoot connection & set up small network:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1714?viewlocale=en_US
• Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN internet connection:

• AirPort troubleshooting guide (primarily settings & base station)

For computer basics, to check and do simple software maintenance of the Mac
OS X, you can boot the computer in SafeBoot (shift key held on startup until a
login window appears) and from GO in main Finder window, see Utilities folder
in the drop-down menu, and look for then launch Disk Utility from the Utilities.
In Disk Utility, choose the Macintosh HD, then 'repair disk permissions'. You
may be able to later click on the hard drive icon of the Brand of the HDD as
seen in the same sidebar where the Macintosh HD was located, and choose to
'verify' the hard disk drive from the choice in the Disk Utility panel then available.
When done with these items in Disk Utility, quit it; then restart the Mac normally.
{For other levels of Disk Utility repair on the hard disk drive, you need to boot the
computer from the OS X Installer's disc#1 and choose Disk Utility from its menu
bar prior to actually running that Installer. The drop down menu bar has options
and select them carefully; since you can do quite a bit to the computer's drive if
the wrong item is chosen out of turn or when not needed. A booted disk utility is
in a position to act more thoroughly on a hard disk drive that is then unmounted.}
If the computer is in a good state of preventative maintenance and permissions
repairs, etc the main issue would be in the choice of settings to access the internet
via the means at the computer's disposal; and choosing the hardware path in the
Network panel of System Preferences is one of the main portals. There are several
items in here, including being able to check-mark and move the order of importance
the main items in a Network preference window, so the computer chooses them first.
If the antenna cable and other connect to/from the AirPort card in the base of the iMac
is properly pressed firmly into position and the card is OK, the physical and electronic
paths should be assured; as far as that goes...
Some of the changes to settings may not have been necessary or help in connecting;
so I am not so sure what ones would need to be changed back to their defaults.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Airport card can see networks but can't connect all of a sudden

I have an older MacBook running 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and it's been working fine. All of a sudden, it can see networks, but cannot connect. I get an alert with an exclamation point and "no Internet connection". My iPad can connect just fine; same network, same location as usual, so I know it's not an issue with the network/router (my husband's computer works fine as well). If my airport card went, I wouldn't be able to see any networks at all, right?  Is there anything I can do?  My AppleCare has run out, due to the age of my computer and I don't want to put hundreds into fixing it, either (nor can I afford it). Has anyone had this happen?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • AirPort Extreme / Green Light ON / Can't see it on network

    My Setting
Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi (4th Gen) and Motorola Surfboad Model SB6120 with Comcast service
Solid Green Light is ON / Internet is working with LAN line connection on Airport Extreme.
    Problem
I can not see it from wireless.
    Attempts
Scan with Airport Utitity from my MacBook Pro
Scan with Airport Utility from iPhone 4
    Scan with other PCs.....

Your problem might stem from having your Airport create a "private" or "hidden" network or by having turned off the wireless functionality of the AE.
If you think you might have setup a private network, but don't know the name, or turned off the wireless, you can:
    - connect your MBP by ethernet cable; then,
    - adjust the WiFi settings to enable wireless clients; or
    - adjust the Wireless security to disable a hidden or private network.
If all else fails, perform a hard factory reset by holding down the physical reset button in the back of the AE with a paperclip, and redo the setup.
    Good Luck.

If you could provide the make and model number of the modem that the AirPort Extreme will be connecting to, we can likely tell you a bit more about what to expect in the way of getting the AirPort set up and working.
Unfortunately, "plug and play" does not apply here. You will need to set up and configure the AirPort Extreme using your iPad or iMac to name the AirPort as a device, assign a device password, name the wireless network, assign a device password and a few other things.
Once the AirPort Extreme is set up, you can connect the PC to one of the LAN <--> ports on the AirPort Extreme using an Etherent cable.
The iPad and iMac will connect to the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme provides.

  • How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

Start by establishing a permanent fixed Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300+ feet or 100 meters, so you should be able to locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it will be needed to provide more wireless signal coverage.
Configure the AirPort Extreme to "create" a wireless network using exactly the same wireless network name, same wireless security setting, and same wireless network password that the ATT wireless is using.
The final step is to insure that the AirPort Extreme is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, so it will work correctly with the ATT modem/router.
If you need more specific steps, we need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac and do not know which operating system it is using.....click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X version number that you see there.

  • I have an Airport Extreme wireless router & I can not connect my Kindle.

I have an Airport Extreme wireless router & I can not connect my Kindle.  Also, my password will not work when a visitor uses it for a laptop (even a Mac) or any other device that uses the internet.  It says the password is incorrect.  I easily connected a Kindle last year, but I got a new one & now I can not connect wirelessly.  I see no tab to create a guest network.  I do not mind giving my password to visitors, but that does not work.

If you temporarily disable wireless encryption on your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), can the Kindle connect to the router and gain access to the Internet now? If so, then I would suggest that you reconfigure the AEBSn to use "WPA2 Personal" for the Wireless Security setting, and then, try connecting with the Kindle again.
As far as establishing a Guest Network, the AEBSn must not be in bridge mode. That is, it should be the only router in your current network and directly conncted to the Internet modem. If it is, then you would find the Guest Networking option on the AirPort > Guest Networking tab:

  • I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  How can I password protect certain files?

I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  I have it set up so my Macbook Pro and PC's in the house can access it.  i have some files that i would like to protect(sensitive personal info.).  Is there a way that can be done where as certain folders are password protected?  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Would a good workaround be to use disk utility to set up a password protected sparse image, of course being connected directly to the Mac, then connect the drive to the Airport Extreme?
Then, couldn't one use that drive and protected files as normal on the airport? It would just require one extra step of using a Mac to set things up first.
I disconnected my Airport so cannot check it out for myself.

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

You can change a password for an Apple ID. However, now whoever finds the iPod will know his email address and I assume that the email address is his Apple ID.
    Apple ID: Changing your password
According to the terms of the iTunes Store, you have to be 13 in order to have an Apple ID.

  • IPad can see wifi but no connection

iPad2 wifi can see network and tick against it. However, Safari con not open page and just hangs. Anyone have any idea please. Iphone works fine on same wifi.
    Many thanks.

A few more things that you can try.
Turn WiFi off - restart the iPad - turn WiFi on again and then try to connect again. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Try to join again.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Then select your WiFi network again and try to join again.
Go to Settings>WiFi>Tap on the arrow next to your network name and then tap on Forget this Network in the next window. Then back out of the setting and go back to WiFi and let the iPad find your home network and then tap on the network name and try joining it again.
Do the same thing as above except don't tap on Forget this Network - tap on Renew Lease at the bottom.

  • HT4260 what is the actual range of airport extreme in meters ? can  it cover my whole home if it is in the range of 50 meters of radius ?

What is the actual range of the Airport Extreme in Metres? Can it Cover up to 50m in Radius?

What is the actual range of the Airport Extreme in Metres? Can it Cover up to 50m in Radius?
50m would be approximately the range.....if there were no walls or obstructions in the path the wireless signal must travel.
Since we know nothing about how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions there might be the path that the wireless signal would take in your home, or the construction type of those obstructions, we cannot even make a guess about whether the AirPort Extreme might provide a signal to cover your home.

  • Airport extreme blinking amber light error when connecting to new modem

I have just bought and installed a new modem gateway.  It is an Arris TG852G DOC 3.0 model with a built in WiFi router.
After connecting it and activating it through Comcast, I reset, then reconnected my airport extreme MD0331LL/A Model No. A1408 to the new Arris
modem, I am getting blinking amber lights on the base station.  I have internet connectivity, but I am still getting an amber light.  My wireless devices (ipad and iphones) all see the old network name and id and seem to work just fine.
When I scanned for my airport base station in my airport utility (version 5.6.1)  to try to resolve the error message I get
a message stating that the Airport Utility is not detecting any airport devices.
I cannot reset the default settings as these buttons do not work within the Airport Utility.
I suspect interference between the built in router in the Arris and I understand I need to operate it in bridge mode.  Can you please help me fix this.
The COMCAST people are extremely unhelpful, and stated that this is not their problem but a problem with my router
as they have provifded me  internet connectivity through the modem and the issue is my problem.

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme that way.
If yes, click on the AirPort Extreme and then click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking
If the message indicates that you need to configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode......
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and restart the AirPort Extreme
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you were using to configure the AirPort Extreme now
It would be a good idea to power off both the Arris gateway and the AirPort Extreme now
    Wait a minute
Start the Arris first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    You should be all set
