Airport extreme cannot connect more than one computer

Hi,
I just got a new cable internet connection but have major problems with my airport extreme. I can be online via airport but I can not connect any other devices wirelessly (including other laptops).
The connection works only when 'distribute a range of IP addresses' is selected in airport utility. Choosing 'share a public IP address' results in no internet access whatsoever. I tried soft- and hardresetting the base station with no luck.
Any ideas?

It sounds like your cable modem needs to be reset.
Most cable modems require that you power them off/on whenever you switch the Ethernet connection from one device to another. When the cable modem is powered on, it finds the new device and talks to it.
Some cable modems have a button on the back to do the reset. Some cable modems have an internal battery which must be removed to do the reset. Some cable modems must be off overnight (or at least several hours) so that equipment back at the ISP can be reset.
"Share a public IP address" is the setting that you want to use.

  • Connect more than one computer to a time capsule volume?

Hello. I am considering buying an old time capsule (500G, 2nd generation) as a little in-house server to store data that need to be accessible for more than one work station. Is it possible to connect more than one work station to one time capsule?
    Thanks

While it is possible to connect more than one computer to the Time Capsule......I would not recommend that you buy the Time Capsule that you are looking at.....unless you know that the owner has replaced the hard drive and power supply.
Most of these models never made it much past a few years of operation, so if this is an "original", you have a hint of what will happen not long after you purchase the product.

  • How to allow access to my airport extreme network for more than one wirelss device at the same time

I received a Kobo Vox ereader for Christmas and have not been able to connect to my home wireless network. It works with unsecured networks and I tested it out at an Apple reseller with their airport extreme netwok and it connects fine.
It seems as if I cannot have more than one wireless device connected to my home netork at the same time.
So here is what I did to test this out:
    - I powered off the Kobo vox
    - I shut down my macbook
    - I turned off the modem and unplugged the power cord and removed the cable connection from the modem.
    -  I also unplugged the airport extreme router.
    - I waited for about 15 minutes and then set it all up again and turned on the power to the router and the modem
    - I turned on the kobo  vox (I left my laptop shut down)
    - my kobo vox was able to connected to the internet.
    - I powered up my laptop and it couldn't connect to the internet.
So, I went through the above steps again and powered up my laptop first and was able to connect to the internet. I then turned on my Kobo and was not able to connect.
It seems as if I can only have one device connected to my wireless network at one time and that device is the first one to be powered on and connected to the internet.
Am I missing some network or airport extreme settings...
    thanks

Try the following on your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to read Share a public IP address
    Click Update

  • Why can't I connect more than one computer to my wifi?

It will allow me to connect one at a time, but I have to take one off in order to connect the other.

When the AirPort Express is in Bridge Mode, it simply passes through the IP address information from the Westell router to connected devices.
The Westell is in charge of assigning IP addresses to every device on the network, but does not appear to be doing this correctly....or it needs some changes to its settings.
If you can find the model number of the Westell device, we'lll try to find a manual online.
Otherwise, you might want to check with AT&T to ask about this. They will probably try to blame it on the AirPort....but in Bridge Mode....it is not doing anything other than passing through the info that it gets from the Westell.
I don't like to recommend setting up a network in the wrong way, but you could try changing a setting on the Express....that will result in what is known as a Double NAT error. This can cause conflicts as well, and will slow down the network a bit as well.
Post back if you want to try this.

  • Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.

    If your network configuration is:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS > (wireless) > Macs, then
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10%
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

  • Connecting to more than one computer?

Anyone know if you can connect the iPod touch to more than one computer? I'm aware that you cannot use the Touch as a "hard drive", which is ridiculous, but I'll live. As far as connecting it to another computer, anyone know if it stays from mac to mac if it will work? I tried today (and it could be because there was no battery life) but it only was able to charge, no icon and didn't show up in itunes.
    Thanks.

Ah, you need to have the latest version of iTunes...that's definitely something they should tell you!

  • Connecting more than one ipod to one mac computer

Can anyone please advise me on how I can connect more than one ipod to just the one mac computer. I need to set up 3 ipods to work on the one mac computer but each with there own itunes library. thanks

When the iPods belong to two users, there are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. Each iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:

  • Connecting iPod to more than one computer

Is it possible to connect a iPod Nano to more than one computer? I downloaded itunes on my home computer and set my ipod up just fine. Then i wanted to connect it to my office computer because i have a bunch of music on it that i would like to put on my ipod. Every time i try to connect to my office computer I get an error message "iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
Any ideas or information would be appreciated.

*Is it possible to connect a iPod Nano to more than one computer?*
Yes it is. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. In this mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod
*Every time i try to connect to my office computer I get an error message "iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes*.
Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section and try changing the drive letter allocated to the iPod in Windows:

  • Can you connect your ipod to more than one computer?

i was wondering if it is possible to hook up an ipod to more than one computer? i would like to use itunes both on my home computer and my lap top. is this possible?

Hi ctwerner, welcome to the forums.
In a nutshell, it is and it isn't. The first category to address is the operating system - if you own a Windows computer and a Mac laptop, or vice versa, the process is impossible as the file structures will be different. However, assuming you have computers with the same type of operating system, it is possible, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
iPods have two modes of updating - manual and automatic. In manual, you have to drag all your music across from the iTunes library and basically do everything yourself. Automatic is the complete opposite - iTunes synchronises everything in your library with your iPod. Updates the time, too.
Basically, if you use manual, the 'Pod becomes what I'd call a 'rogue' - not tied to any computer. You can plug it into any machine and copy music to it (not from it though - copy-protection doesn't allow it). In automatic, for convenience and to make sure your library is accurate, the 'Pod is locked to the original machine. I say 'locked' but it really isn't. However, if you have the 'Pod set to auto and change computers, iTunes will ask you if you want to change the library settings to that computer - if you say yes, it'll wipe your 'Pod clean of music (not other files if you use it as a hard drive, I think) and copy only the files it has in its' library. Likewise, switching back will result in the same thing.
To change between these settings, plug your iPod into your original computer (ie the one you use the Pod with), go to iTunes and choose Edit -> Preferences -> iPod, and then pick either the top option for 'Auto' or the bottom for 'Manual.'
Bear in mind that copying music is only practical over USB2.0 or Firewire (for the 1st to 4th generation iPods only - Firewire is not supported for the colour screen versions). If you have an old laptop, it might have USB1.1, at which point data transfer is painfully slow (I speak from experience, so trust me!). Of course, your desktop may very well have USB1.1, at which point you might not even notice...
Hope this helps you, and enjoy your iPod!

  • More Than One Computer Trying to Access Web = Very Slow Download Speeds?

We have Verizon DSL with a basic Westell modem, which supposedly is only a modem with no router capabilities. We have an Airport Extreme Snow Base Station that acts as a WDS Main, with one other AEB Snow as a WDS Remote. All computers have unique ip addresses in the 10.0.1.X range as provided by the WDS Main's DHCP.
When only one computer connects to the internet to download web pages, software updates, etc., there seems to be no problem at all. When I do a speed check I get results that seem to be in the correct range, and it doesn't matter which computer I use for the test.
However, if we try to access the internet with more than one computer at the same time, everything slows to a crawl. Such as, if one computer is downloading software updates, the other CPUs have super slow web page downloads, slow to the point of connection time-outs at times. Or if two of the computers are simply trying to download web pages at the same time, one or the other has super slow downloads.
I feel like there is some kind of routing problem with the Base Station but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
What could the problem be? Where could it originate, and what, if any, advice could someone give me to help trace the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

... the one computer I am looking at right now shows DNS servers as 10.0.1.1, which is the internal ip address of the AEB. Could this be part of the problem?
That is normal and shouldn't cause a problem. Essentially it tells the computer to ask the snow AirPort base station (ABS) for DNS information. The ABS will then provide the DNS information which it currently received from the ISP.
Would it help if I manually entered the DNS numbers that appear on the AEB on each machine's Network Preferences?
Probably not. A busy DNS server or faulty DNS info won't affect download speeds. That only affects browsing since that requires the computer to convert human readable addresses to numbers that the computer can use.
Remember that the snow ABS only operates at 802.11b (11 Mbps) speeds. Then when you use WDS it cuts your available wireless bandwidth in half.

  • Hardwiring more than one computer

Just wondering if it's possible to have more than one computer wired via ethernet to an Airport Extreme Base Station. There's only one LAN port. Can it be shared for multiple hardwired connections?
I have one wireless iBook and would like the other two Macs to be hardwired. Thanks for the help

Yes, you can easily connect two or more computers to the LAN port of the Base Station with the use of a basic ethernet switch (NOT a router). A basic 4-port ethernet switch will cost around $30 at your local computer shop. At home, just cable the LAN port of the Base Station to one of the switch ports. Your two Macs each connect to other ports on the switch. You'll have one spare for future use. No additional configuration of the Base Station is necessary - it automatically shares the connection with all computers cabled to it.

  • Playing a track on more than one computer

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if it's possible to play an iTunes track on more than one computer (i.e., running iTunes) at a time? I have my main iTunes library downstairs, connected to an AirPort Express which is connected to my home surround system. While I'm playing a list through this setup, does anyone know if I can get another computer (Mac with iTunes 7.3)in my house to also be playing the tune at the same time (giving me the same music both upstairs and downstairs). I know I can play the track via a shared iTunes library (doing that now), but I want to have the track in synch as people move through the house. Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
