Airport Extreme card not recognized

Hi all - I just got my new MacBook this morning, and am already having problems. sigh Immediately upon startup (first time ever), everything went well. I chose our network, entered the password, and connected to the internet to download updates and my preferred software. At some point during these downloads I think I must have gotten a bit greedy with my downloading, and everything froze - keyboard, trackpad, everything - and I had to force a shut down. When I rebooted, not only could I not connect wirelessly, the computer seems unaware that there is even an Airport card installed.
I can't activate it in Networking or Network Port Configurations, and it doesn't appear as an option in Internet Connect's Diagnostic mode or the "Network Setup Assistant" function.
I tried looking through Help, which suggested opening System Profiler to see if it's recognizing the hardware.... it doesn't appear under Hardware, but comes up as what I assume is a connecting option under Networking's main category... however, when I click on "AirPort Card" directly beneath that, it says No information found. Again it appears under Locations, but I can't figure out how any of this is going to help me get it to work.
We're working with a Linksys wireless router which is not the problem - my husband has a MacBook as well and has been connected with no problems all day.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas for what to do? I suppose I probably ought to just call AppleCare, but I thought I'd toss this out there.
Thanks in advance for any help.
13" MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

A couple of things you should do first:
1. Reboot your computer and then after the first "bing" press Command-Option-P-R (all four keys down at the same time and hold it). Hold these keys until you hear another bing, then you can let go.
2. After the computer boots up, go to the Utilities folder, find Disk Utilities, and then "Repair Permissions."
3. After #2 is done, find your Mac's boot up CD or DVD--the one that came with the computer (or better yet, if you have a newer version). Boot up from this CD and then using the Disk Utility tool on this CD or DVD, use the "Repair Disk" command.
4. After that is done, reboot your computer and see if you can get your Airport Card working.
By the way, steps 1 to 3 are basic Mac repair techniques.
Good luck!

  • Ibook G4 - airport extreme card not recognizing

    Hi,
I installed the card per instructions that came with ibook but it does not recognize the card. Anyone have any experience with this? I dont want to break anything..

Try reseating the card and re-attaching the antenna. The antenna should click TWO times.

  • AirPort Extreme Card not being recognized

I installed an AirPort Extreme Card into my powerbook G4 15" laptop. I also installed the software from the CD that came with the card. Everything went just like the instructions set out. When I start my computer and go into the system profiler it doesn't show that I have an airport card installed. Also if I launch the AirPort Setup Assistant it claims I have no card installed.
How can I determine the card is installed correctly and working?

Which PowerBook G4 do you have?
Some PowerBook G4s require the original AirPort card.
Others require the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Airport extreme card not working with leopard / G5

I just upgraded my PowerMac to leopard (G5 dual 1.8, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB HD). I bought it new in December 2004 from apple. Previously I had been using a USB adapter to connect to my wireless internet at home (Linksys WRT54G). This device does not support leopard so I got an airport extreme card from gainsaver.com.
The Airport extreme card is configured properly as far as I know but it will only connect to my network for about 5 seconds then it drops. The USB adapter worked perfectly in the same spot and my macbook right next to it works fine as well.
    1. Could it be a bad Airport extreme card?
    2. Is this a known issue? And possibly be resolved with the 10.5.2 update?
It is a fresh Leopard install with no updates as I can not connect it to the internet to get them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have the same machine (4 ram slots?) have you got the connector for the aerial that connects to the motherboard attached to your airport card. Mine works a treat.

  • AirPort Extreme card not compatible with Mac Pro???

    Hey,
I recently purchased my Mac Pro without thinking to include any hardware for connecting to a wireless network.
I have recently moved into a new apartment which I am keen to join to a wireless network which has just been set up by my roommate for his PC and Laptop.
I was going to buy an AirPort Extreme card, but I have read that it is not compatible with the Mac Pro. Yet when I looked at the configure process for a new mac it was listed as one of the devises offered for wireless networking!!
    I am very confused...
I was wondering if anyone could help me, i just need to know what hardware i will need and how it would be installed.
thanks, all help will be greatly appreciated!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

the mac pro takes a slightly different airport express card. you have to purchase it at the retail store and have them install it. in my experience they will not allow you to purchase one and install it yourself due to the difficulty of installing it. best thing to do take your macpro into a apple retail store and see what they can do.

  • Airport Extreme Card Not Working Properly (Web Browsing Slow)

    Hello people of apple discussions,

And I have a problem, my airport extreme card is not functioning properly like when I go on the internet, it comes up with the server "www.google.com" cannot be reached or the same with Yahoo! Back when it had 10.4 it was functioning properly with very high speeds. But, all the other PCs in the house gets good internet even my iPhone and the router is functioning properly. It's been like this since for about 6-8 months and i am very upset with my mac!:|So can I have some help or any suggestions!

Have you tried contacting your ISP? Sometimes they can help you optimize your settings. Such as DNS server numbers. I had a simullar problem and found out my DNS settings were wrong.
Do you have other computers that use the wireless single? If not you might look into your router to see if maybe something is wroung with it. You can always go to a wifi hotspot or a friends house and see how the connection is there. If it seems normal then you know it is your ISP or your router. If not then it might be a laptop problem.

  • PB's Airport Extreme card not staying connected - please help diagnose

My thread Airport extremem card can't hang onto wifi signal - what to do? in the "Getting Online" forum hasn't generated a solution, so I'm trying here too.
In the past few weeks, my airport signal bounces around and randomly disconnects me. It goes from no signal (indicated) to 3 bars then bounces around. It occurred with my own Airport Extreme card (in the PB) and my Belkin router, and the library's wifi.
The problem may have started after an erase-and-install of Panther with an upgrade using the combo 10.3.9. The only security updates I see receipts or packages of are SecUpd2005-004Pan.pkg, SecUpd2007-002Pan.pkg, SecurityUpdate2004-10-27Pan.pkg.
The usual troubleshooting (Permissions, Chrons, Disk Warrior) didn't solve anything. Since first posting about this problem I've reapplied the 10.3.9 combo. I tried changing the channel on the router and setting it to Protected Mode.
    "Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON."
I then installed Airport 4.2 update because Software Updater presented it as an option.
Until today iStumbler and MacStumbler were showing 29-35% signal strength with no noise. As of today, iStumbler is showing intermittent noise of ~14-21%, but MacStumbler is not. (It was constant when I tried channel 9 and changing the router's back to 10 made it intermittent.)
The router is serving a desktop computer via ethernet so I can't move it. I have reset the router and cable modem several times with no improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? Thanks.

I would have come back to edit this, to say that the dropping signal problem came back since the 10.3.9 combo but I couldn't. The darn wifi signal was lost for something like 7 minutes.
The PB was sitting in exactly the same place and toggling airport on and off wouldn't reconnect it. It generated many lines in the console. Anyone know what this means?

  • Airport Extreme Utility not recognizing base station; flashing amber light

I'm using a PC with a Linksys PCI W54G PCI Adapter card. My Bellsouth DSL connection has worked fine using a direct ethernet connection. I'm now trying to setup a new Airport Extreme for wireless, but cannot get the utility to recognize the base station. The amber light flashes. I have tried resetting and rebooting. Still nothing. What am I doing wrong?

    ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE
    1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
    2. Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
    3. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    If ISP uses DHCP:
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
    REBOOT AIRPORT HARDWARE
    1. Turn power off to ISP modem and AirPort Base Station, and shutdown computer - leave power off for 10 minutes.
    2. Turn on modem and wait for it to complete its test cycle. Then turn on the AirPort Base Station.
    3. Turn on computer and select your wireless network using the AirPort status menu in the menu bar. Then check if AirPort Base Station appears in AirPort Utility.
    4. If AirPort Base Station is not seen in AirPort Utility, quit AirPort Utility and turn AirPort Off using the AirPort status menu in the menu bar. Wait 30 seconds and turn the AirPort On again.
    5. Check if AirPort Base Station appears in AirPort Utility.

  • My AirPort Extreme is not recognizing my Drive

I have connected the drive directly to my Mac, it recognizes it and I can navigate through the folders. But how do I get my AirPort Extreme to recognize it and use it as a remote drive? I have connected it to the AirPort. And see nothing.

OK, if you can copy the files across to the MB then copy them back. It's laborious but it would save the files. If this is impossible, well, I can't see an option.
. I guess I don't see the difference it would make going through the AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Extreme's embedded operating system can't read NTFS. It is a decision Apple has made, and unfortunately all the Extreme's customers are stuck with it.

  • External hard drive connected to airport extreme is not recognized (Lion)

Plugged an external hard drive into the USB port on my new Airport Extreme Base Station, and it's nowhere to be found on my MB Pro (Lion). Doesn't appear in "Finder" or anywhere else.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA

The drive also needs to be formatted right (NTFS and ExFAT don't work).  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426
If the drive is bus-powered (ie, doesn't have its own power supply), you need a powered USB hub, as the Airport's USB port is underpowered.  Some folks have also needed them with some large (750 GB or more) powered drives, too.

  • Emac does not recognise airport extreme card.

I bought my emac less than a year ago and its running on the newest version of Mac osX. I also have a PC with broadband and a wireless router which is emitting. I was told that i needed to get an airport extreme card to let my mac use this internet aswell. I have bought the card and i installed the software on the disc and i then fitted the disc into my mac and i have checked to see that it is in firmly and so is the aerial. This said when i turn my emac on it does not search for available networks like it supposedly should and when i go into system profiler it says no information available for the airport card. I am not convinced that the disc actually installed anything onto my mac however since i cannot find any files that i would have thought would have come from the disc. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Emac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

P.O.R.G, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no need to install the software from the disc. OS X contains all of the software needed to support the AirPort Extreme card.
The early eMac's require the original AirPort card instead of the AirPort Extreme card.
If you are using the correct card and the card is not recognized in System Profiler, there are only 3 possibilities:
The card is not installed properly.
    The card is defective.
The eMac's motherboard is defective in the area interacting with the AirPort Extreme card

  • Airport extreme can not be recognized?, Airport extreme can not be recognized?, Airport extreme can not be recognized?

My Airport Extreme Station (4th Generation) is all of a sudden not recogized by the Airport Utility Software. I rebooted the Airport Extreme device a few times, disconnected it completely, and did it set it back to the factory default setting. No recognition. I tried configurating it with all my devices; IPhone 4S, IPad, MacBookPro and new iMac. Always the same message, even though I have internet access through the Airport default Wifi-ID. So the the Airport device works properly. Just no access for configuration, Does anyone has an advice to get back into the Airport Set-up through the Airport Utility program? Thank you.

    Hello loving-truth,
I understand that your Airport Extreme is not being recognized in AirPort Utility, however you are able to access the internet via the Wi-Fi signal. We can give the steps in the following article a shot:
AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3

  • Old Airport card not recognizing Apple Airport Router.

    Hello there,
I've just been given an old G4 (digital audio) to use for university and after doing some research brought an old Airport card off of ebay.
After putting into the relevant slot and plugging it in, it started to recognize all of my neighbor's networks, but not my own which is run from an Apple Router!
I also have a faster G4 iBook which uses the airport extreme card and it can find it no problem?
Is it a lost cause trying to get such an old card trying to find the router? I'd rather avoid having to 'borrow' my neighbor's connection if I can help it.

    Hi duane,
    Thanks for the prompt reply.
My airport base station has just been reset and is currently using the default channel (which i believe is 2) and the airport card still is refusing to notice it.

  • Airport Extreme Card - USA version not compatible with Europe?

I'm having some problems with the Airport Extreme Card in my Mac Mini i.e. my connection to the internet is mind numbingly slow when using it. I have no issues when I hook it up directly with a LAN cable and I've used a friends Macbook to connect to the wireless router and their connection works perfectly.
    My specs...
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.3.1
    Current Wireless Network: SpeedTouch3C84E7
    Wireless Channel: 11
Now here's where I think the problem lies, I bought this machine in the US but am now living in Belgium...you'll note that the card locale is set to USA. My friends machine has a card locale of worldwide and I think this difference is causing the issue. I found another thread that mentions using a USA card in europe limits the number of available channels but I'm still in the dark as to what to do about it.
Is the locale changeable via a software setting or is the hardware different...maybe there's a firmware change I could make?
If it's hardware is this something my Apple store can switch for me?
If I'm really stuck can I switch my router to the US settings to fix the issue?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks for the help!
    Chris

hi. I think that the only difference between USA and worldwide cards is that ww cards have additional channels (12 and 13). You should be able to use your mini in Europe.
