Airport Extreme Card - USA version not compatible with Europe?

I'm having some problems with the Airport Extreme Card in my Mac Mini i.e. my connection to the internet is mind numbingly slow when using it. I have no issues when I hook it up directly with a LAN cable and I've used a friends Macbook to connect to the wireless router and their connection works perfectly.
My specs...
AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.3.1
Current Wireless Network: SpeedTouch3C84E7
Wireless Channel: 11
Now here's where I think the problem lies, I bought this machine in the US but am now living in Belgium...you'll note that the card locale is set to USA. My friends machine has a card locale of worldwide and I think this difference is causing the issue. I found another thread that mentions using a USA card in europe limits the number of available channels but I'm still in the dark as to what to do about it.
Is the locale changeable via a software setting or is the hardware different...maybe there's a firmware change I could make?
If it's hardware is this something my Apple store can switch for me?
If I'm really stuck can I switch my router to the US settings to fix the issue?
Any other ideas?
Thanks for the help!
Chris

hi. I think that the only difference between USA and worldwide cards is that ww cards have additional channels (12 and 13). You should be able to use your mini in Europe.

No, the AirPort Extreme card is not compatible with the Mac Pro.

A 1st Generation AirPort Extreme is compatible with 10.8.2.
Is this the model that you have?
Or, is your AirPort Extreme the older "round" version?  Apple dd not use Generation numbers on the "round" version of the AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme Card M8881Z/A not recognised

    Hi,
I have a eMac (ATI-Graphics) 1Ghz G4 processor. I bought the above airport card, under the impression that it would be compatable and work. I have followed the instructions on the apple website but the emac does not recognise it. Is there anything I can do that might help?
I know it is a very broad question. The card does not show up in the networking section of system profiler. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.11.
    Thanks

The Airport Extreme card is an extremely tight fit in the ATI-graphics eMac's card slot. It has been consistently reported for years that you can push the Airport Extreme card until it feels as if it's clicked into place, yet the card isn't really fully seated. This can cause problems from kernel panics on restarting to failure of the card to appear. It's also not unheard-of to have a defective card, especially one bought second-hand.
Try removing the card, and closely examine the pin edge of the card. If any of the pins appear bent, or the card pin edge itself is slightly bent, return the card in exchange for a replacement. If the card appears OK, try reinserting it (eMac - Do-It-Yourself), but after fully inserting the card, contiue to push the card into the slot until the 50-lb eMac just begins to slide away from you on your desk or table. Make sure the antenna connector is fully seated, too.

Numbers documents from iOS need Numbers 3.2 on a Mac to open. And Numbers 3.2 requires Mavericks. If you are using Mavericks you can get Numbers 3.2 from the Mac App Store. It will be free IF you have Numbers 2 (iWork '09) installed. Otherwise you must buy it.
Your other option is to send the Numbers file as an Excel file via e-mail to yourself to open with an earlier version of Numbers.

If it's from 2006 or later, which it sounds like it is, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If you run Software Update after you get it, it should offer 10.6.8, and if run run it again after that, it should offer iTunes 11.
If you want, you can even update all the way to OS X Mavericks (10.9), the latest release of OS X, if your iMac is from 2007 or later, which is sounds like it is. Mavericks is free but requires Snow Leopard first.

  • My eMac can't find installed airport Extreme card

    Hello everyone,
Having bought a netgear wireless modem for a wi-fi connection, I was told to install an airport extreme card on my eMac, which I did - several times. But the eMac says he can't find when I look for it, either in the internet setup or in the general information about the hard and software. I also installed the accompanying software. Why can this be ? Thanks for your advice!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's an eMac (USB 2.0) model. I'm not certain I should try to push the card in more ? Are those cards defective frequently ?
Which eMac do you have? You can use KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number
and identify your model to determine which model
    you have.
If your eMac is the "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB
2.0)", or "eMac (2005)" the AirPort Extreme card is the correct
    wireless card.
If your eMac is the "eMac", it requires the original
AirPort card and is not compatible with
    the AirPort Extreme card.
Assuming that your eMac is compatible with the AirPort Extreme card, one or more of
the following must be true if the eMac is not
    detecting the card.
    The card is not installed
    correctly.
    The card is defective.
    The
    eMac's motherboard is defective.

  • AirPort Extreme Card recognizes networks but won't connect - HELP!

    hello forumites,
firstly, if this post is similar to one that has already been well-read and widely responded to, i apologize and ask that you respond with the link to said thread.
my issue pertains to an iBook G4 (circa 2004 i believe) running OS X 10.4.11 with an apple-installed AirPort Extreme card (firmware version 405.1). i have never had any problems with the card previously, but in the last week it has quite suddenly ceased to connect to any wireless network i attempt to log on to (both password protected and non). despite the card's sudden inability to connect, it still is able to recognize all the wireless networks in my location (i know this as the networks are still listed in the AirPort status pull-down menu).
in an effort to fix the issue i have:
restarted the card (turned it off and on)
restarted the computer (many, many times)
    used the network diagnostics program
used the network setup assistant program
attempted to connect through the system preferences (network)
attempted to connect through internet connect
did a complete erase and install
    still nothing.
anyone had a similar problem? anyone find a way to fix it?
thanking you in advance for your brilliance and time,
    brad

firstly, tesserax, a tremendous thank you for your help. unfortunately, i tried each step you suggested, but the problem continues.
step 1: i have tried and failed to connect to several different networks in a handful of locations (home, work, friend's house, local coffee shop, etc.).
step 2: i have disabled my own wireless encryption as well as the wireless encryption at a friends house, however, to do so i had to use their ibook, as my own either didn't list the base station in the AirPort utility (although it did list the base station in the AirPort status pull down), or it asked for a password even though the base station wasn't password protected (maybe this may add some insight into the issue?).
step 3: i have connected the computer directly to the modem using an ethernet cable and was able to go online - perhaps this means the problem is related solely to the card.
step 4: i moved the the com.apple.networkConfig.plist file and and the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop and restarted. unfortunately, OS did NOT rebuild the files. instead, i had to go through the network diagnostics to rebuild them manually. while the files were replaced, the problem was not solved.
step 5: i reset the PRAM, but the problem still exists.
step 6: i reset the PMU, but the problem still exists.
i then tried various combinations of your suggestions, including moving the files out of the preferences folder and then reseting the PRAM and the PMU, but still nothing.
after having attempted every fix i could think of (and that was before posting to this forum) i did a full erase and install of the OS. since that's usually the cure all to whatever ails the computer, it's my assumption that the issue is a physical (hardware) one. that said, if you have any other suggestions i will be more than happy to give them a shot.
    thanks again,
    brad

  • Is my Airport Extreme Card faulty?

    Hi all,
I have an iMac G4, 1Ghz machine. I got it second hand and I have no problems using it, except trying to fathom out if there is something wrong with the mac, or the airport card I have fitted.
I'll try and describe the issue best I can, please bear with me.
The Airport Extreme card is fitted correctly, it is slotted right in and unless I take a hammer to it, it will not go any further. The aerial is also fully fitted, again, it won't go any further.
However, the iMac does not detect the card correctly. If I look in System Profiler, nothing appears under Network/Airport Card. There is no wireless network indicator along the top next to the volume icon etc, and nothing within Network to indicate it is detected either.
    But.....
If I look under System Profiler / Hardware / PCI Cards then I discover it. It is listed as Type: Other Network Controller, and crucially, Driver Installed: No. I can supply various ID's as and when required if necessary.
What I am trying to establish is, does this mean there is a fault with the iMac, or with the Airport Extreme card itself? I am looking for some pointers and will gladly check the obvious if required so any hints or tips would be gratefully received. The system is fully updated, and everything else works perfectly.
Thanks for any and all help in advance,
    Chris

Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Discussion forum!
You may have to see about getting another AirPort Extreme card
and check that against the results of the first one; and hope the
faulty matter is with the first card and not the iMac G4 itself.
Sometimes, when an AirPort card is not physically present in a
Mac, and was not there during the OS installation, some of the
drivers may not have been installed or installed correctly. Not
sure in this case, if the whole OS including AirPort support is an
automatic function - even when or if there is NO AirPort card in
the computer during the OS X install. +This may not be the case.+
There may be another answer, in this; if the card driver was only
installed IF there was a Card present. Or, IF the driver is installed
even when no Card was in the computer at the time the OS was
installed into the computer. (Some users did note an issue, in a
    few instances, years ago.)
It is possible the AirPort Extreme 802.11/g card could be defective.
The other basic possibility could be debris in the card's slot, in such
a way as to not allow all the connections between the card & the Mac.
Be sure to not handle these wireless cards, or for that matter, RAM
memory cards, etc by the electrical contact side of the chips; since
a static charge by handling them, can short out their components.
You could try your luck with a USB wireless 802.11/g module to see
if that may give you wireless access via a USB port, if the AirPort
Extreme card and slot don't act correctly even with a second card.
On rare occasion, there could be an instance where the card may
be OK and not show correctly. Not sure if resetting the Power
Management Unit (PMU) could be of help in this specific matter.
    • Resetting the iMac (Flat Panel G4) Power Management Unit (PMU)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
{The older AirPort Original 802.11/b wireless card would not fit into
an iMac G4 computer with the 1.0GHz or later (1.25GHz) processor
    so that should not be among the considered possible issues, here.}
Hopefully, the issue is only dust in the Card's slot; which would be
comparatively easy to clear out. Or the AirPort Extreme card itself
could be bad. So, these are the simplest and least costly items to
take into consideration and check, compared to a logic board.
And it is possible to use a USB wireless adapter or module for use
with the iMac G4 and 802.11/g/n so long as the specs are correct
for the computer hardware and be sure the USB plug fits well. As
these generally go, they can be as easy as automatic recognition
by the computer. If you go this route, try the item without any new
software installed to support the USB wireless first. It may just go.
If the AirPort card were tested in another computer, to be good,
then perhaps to put the card back into your iMac G4 1.0GHz
machine and reset the PMU, check the computer's Profiler; and
maybe see if by reinstalling the Leopard (10.5) last Combo file
(10.5.8) over the top of your current 10.5.8 system, could help
it recognize the AirPort extreme card that was not there during
the installation of OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. This is a stretch.
    Good luck & happy computing!
+{edited to add conjecture and other stuff}+

  • Can a "bad" Airport Extreme Card work intermittently, i.e.

work sometimes and then suddenly disconnect and reconnect? I'm having trouble with Safari crashes, and slow or no page loads... it was implied that the Airport Extreme Card may be not working properly. Can this happen?
I figured it either works or don't work, but maybe it's slowly dieing? I don't know.
Anyone with experience with the card dieing or being intermittent? Is there a good way to test it?
    Thanks for any observations.

Well here's a new one, but I might be speaking too soon. I certainly hope not!
The AirPort checked out just fine at the Apple Store, and sure enough within an hour back home my connection/browsers crashed. I shut down the computer and unplugged the gateway. It ran smooth for three whole hours before crashing this time (the longest time on record).
There's been one more thing in the back of my mind, and before calling the DSL company to return the gateway I figured I'd give it a try.
I unplugged the KENSINGTON wireless optical desktop for Mac, keyboard and mouse with the RF receiver, and guess what?
I haven't crashed in " 10 entire hours"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG RECORD!
    Who would know? Not I.
I emailed Kensington Support and asked whether the RF reciever might interfer with a wireless connection via airport, but I don't expect a reply. Niether a reply from the Yahoo!SBC/DSL support, because nothing, i.e. no video works with Mac OSX on their homepage. Bummer! But that's another problem I CAN ignor.
Has anyone here ever heard that a wireless keyboard and mouse can mess around your airport connection?
    So for so good.
