Airport Extreme compatibility

I have a Power Mac G5 with Tiger 10.4.11. Can I use, setup and administer an Airport Extreme base station if I have the Airport utility 5.4.2?
Or is my machine hopelessly out of date?

  • AirPort Extreme compatibility with native IPv6

Fibre To The Cabinet becomes available soon in my street, in the UK.
Speaking to two ISPs who offer IPv6 native service, both say that their customers trying to use AirPort Extreme routers for IPv6 natively are experiencing problems.
They both say that the device only works when setup in tunnel mode.
My understanding is that such a setup is inferior.
Both ISPs blame the device for the lack of compatibility.
Has anyone here experienced this problem?
Has anyone here found a provider with whom this works?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I tested it, does not really work either. I just submitted an enhancement request via apple.com/feedback to ask if they want to add native v6 over PPPoE.
I hope they take it into account.

  • Airport Extreme Compatibility with Windows Vista

I hope someone can help. I installed airport extreme and all my computers (Mac's and pc's on XP) can connect ok to the internet. The new laptop I just bought with Vista will not work. After two hours of tech support from Apple and then Toshiba, I learned that the router works when no security is selected, but when either available security level is selected, the laptop will recognize the router signal but won't connect to the internet. I downloaded the 7.1 Apple update and did a firmware update to the base station. Any ideas about this? It seems as though the security levels in the Apple router are not recognized by Vista. But I don't see an available fix to download.
    Thanks for any help!

One possibility is to locate an older wireless access point and configure it in bridge mode and use it only for 802.11g wireless access to the network by the Vista notebook computer.

  • Airport Extreme compatibility with Linksys WAG54GS

I've got a linksys WAG54GS wireless gateway/router and want to connect my old Airport Extreme basestation to it.
I've seen various posts stating that there are only a few routers which are compatible with the Extreme. Does apple publish a list anywhere so I can find out if its worth my while persevering with trying to connect the two?
Or does anyone here know if my router is compatible?
    Thanks in advance

  • Airport card and airport extreme compatibility

I am currently using APE with Powerbook G4...love it. I also have an older iMac SE Graphite 600mhz and want to add it to my wireless network. Is the Apple airport card w/adapter that is no longer sold by apple compatible with
my newer APE base station?? Any thoughts on whether ebay is a good source for purchase. I have used ebay several times and have not been dissapointed so far.

Yes, the a Mac equipped with an original Airport card is fully compatible with an Airport Extreme Base Station.
For what its worth, I've never been disappointed either with the dozens of items I've purchased via EBay.

  • Airport Extreme compatable printers

Is there any way to determine which USB printers will work with Airport Extreme (802.11n)?
I've been to iFelix, and only one printer has been tested.
Are there USB success stories out there?

All printers compatible with the older non-n Airport Extreme Base Station should also work with the current n version of the Airport Extreme Base Station. The list is a bit dated. It can be found at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html

  • BeBox / Thomson 585 compatability with Airport Extreme

    Hi
I intend to permanently connect the AirPort Extreme to my Thomson 585 modem / router purely to provide an improved and hopefully extended WiFi coverage. The WiFi on the 585 will be disabled.
Yes I an aware that WiFi range etc is governed by building structure, given all things being equal the Extreme should provide improved coverage.
My question is this - is the Airport Extreme compatable with my 585 modem router and has anyone done this already? BeUnlimited are confident that it is compatable but will not guarantee it hence me being a little circumspect and inviting comment here.
    Your help is most appreciated

Yes, it will work. The only special set up that you'll need to do is enter the WEP /WPA password assuming that you've got security turned on. I hope that this helps.

  • AirPort Extreme & Windows 8.0 compatability?

My Netgear wireless router just died and am researching an alternative for our household which includes 2 newer work related Dell laptops running Windows 8.0 and my 2 year old MacBook Pro and IPad 2. It seems most ever wireless router offered, whether an inexpensive throw away to high end ac products all have about 1/4 a1/3 of the reviews insisting they are garbage that doesn't even reliably stay connected to the internet let alone walk  on water as claimed.
Reviews of AirportExtreme claim reliable connection and ease of installation, both important. Forums, albeit several years old, claimed that the router shipped with channel 13 as default setting and that connecting to Windows clients was very difficult and many would not stay connected or had to be reset every time the windows machines hibernated or were shutdown. Are there persisting compatibility issues with Dells running Windows 8.0 or have they been addressed? Does one still need to change the channel to other than 13 to have it work stateside? Thanks for your help.

Hello borzo. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I suspect the problem is that you have two active DHCP servers operating on your local network. One being the Win2K8 Server and the other is the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). By default, the AEBSn's DHCP server service will be enabled. The only way to disable it would be to reconfigure it as a bridge, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).

  • Are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

Sonos uses its own priopietory wireless protocol SonosNet to distribute audio data among all its products, thus it should not affect other network devices which use standard WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n protocol at all though they may share the same radio channel for wirless signaling.
On my dual-band (5 GHz / 2.4 GHz) Airport Extreme staion, I select the option "802.11n Only (5GHz) - 802.11n (2.4GHz)" and turn on "Use wide channels" in Wireless configuration in order to use only 802.11n protocol and more radio channels to achieve maximum wireless bandwidth of 400 Mbps. This bandwidth is necessary for quick Time Machine backup to NAS connected to the Airport Extreme station through Ethernet cable. So my iMac and MacBook Pro always connected to the Airport Extreme through 5 GHz radio channel with 802.11n protocol whereas my iPhone 4S always connected through 2.4 GHz radio channel with the same protocol.
In my living room Sonos ZP-90 (same as new CONNECT model) zone player is connected to Airport Extreme directly through Ethernet cable (recommended by Sonos) and Sonos S5 (same as new PLAY:5 model) zone player in bedroom is connected wirelessly through SonosNet protocol to the ZP-90 zone player in living room.
These devices are in operation simutaneouly most of the time. Music is playing through the Sonos ZP90/S5 zone players througout the day, I am streaming viedo through Internet (fibre broadband 25 Mbps) on my MacBook Pro in bedroom or iMac in living room or reading news on my iPhone. So far so good and have no encounter any interference problem for about three years. Further more bandwidth for 802.11n protocol does not seem to be affected at all.
In fact with a low power Fujitsu USB drive (2.5" / 500 GB, designed for notebook) plug into USB port of Airport Extreme, it can be used as NAS drive for Sonos music distribution system without any problem. Just transfer all files from Music folder in my home directory on iMac into this NAS drive and set it up as music source in "Manage > Music Library Settings" in Sonos Controller for Mac application will do. Though the same drive can be served as Time Machine's backup disk as well, an independent full-fledged NAS drive for Sonos and Time Machine backup is better long-term solution for reliability and performance. With the NAS configured as sole music source, you do not need to keep any computer powered on all the time in order to play music through the Sonos system.

  • I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Airport Extreme & Airport Card Compatibility

I have a G5 1.8 dual running 10.4.7 and a G4 450 dual running 10.4.7. If I purchase the Airport Extreme & hook it up directly to my G5, and the Airport Card for the G4, will everything work or are there some compatability issues?
    Thanks, Gronky

if you set the base station in compatability mode (so it supports both b and g operation) then it will support connections from the older 802.11b airport card as well as from more modern airport extreme and equivalent 802.11g cards

  • IBook G4 with Airport Extreme / NetGear WGT624 Compatability?

I have a NetGear WGT624 Super G router connected to a Wild Blue modem (1 Mbs). My daughter has an iBook G4 Airport Extreme Ready, but no wireless card. If I order the Airport Extreme card and install it for her will it connect and work with my wireless router? If so, are there and special setup actions?

Yes, it will work. The only special set up that you'll need to do is enter the WEP /WPA password assuming that you've got security turned on. I hope that this helps.

  • AIRPORT EXTREME CARD compatability

I have a G4/500 SAWTOOTH-AGP machine. Will an AirPort Extreme card work in this machine? I've looked everywhere, but cannot fine the answer. The specs for the card say "Will only work in machines that are Airport Extreme ready"...
I've looked up the specs on the SAWTOOTH, and it doesn't say anything other than "Airport ready"...
I've read LOTS and LOTS of postings by folks saying this card didn't work in their machines. Many where from G5 owners, so I don't know.

    Hi, Stacey!
The Airport Extreme card will not work. You need the original Airport Card or a third party option... Please see the following current thread for some really good info/options concerning this subject:

  • Is Airport Extreme (802.11n) compatable with Skype (2.8.0.866)?

When trying to video chat Skype indicates my airport wireless router is not capable of video chatting? I'm thinking of buying a new wireless router if this is the case. Can this be true?

Skype works well with my Airport Extreme or Time Capsule.
Do you have any firewalls turned on?

  • Airport Extreme and Sirius Stiletto 2 compatibility?

    Hi folks
I just installed an Airport Extreme as my base station for my home network. I used to have the Stiletto 100 but now just bought the Sirius Stiletto 2, which is supposed to have better WiFi capability and should be able to connect to more WiFi networks.
However I have found that my Stiletto 2 is not able to connect to my network because it shows a circle with a line through it. The Sirius manual states the following regarding connecting to WiFi networks:
"Networks that are not supported (eg. ad-hoc, WPA-Enterprise) will show this symbol instead of signal strength bars".
Is the Extreme one of these ad-hoc or WPA-Enterprise type networks?
The manual states the Stiletto 2 should work with most of the following:
    802.11b and 802.11g
    WEP and WPA encryption
Hidden wireless networks (SSID not broadcast)
It finishes by saying the Stiletto is not compatible with 802.1x networks, sometimes called WPA-Enterprise (besides b and g as I stated prior)
So does this basically mean that I cannot connect to thru WiFi in my Stiletto 2 due to the way the Airport Extreme is set up? If so, please fill me in and kindly let me know which reason above makes it so that I cannot connect (still trying to learn some of the technical aspects of Mac/Airport), as well as any suggestions you may have that can help me connect thru WiFi (if possible)
    Thanks so much in advance!!
    Jason

The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) wireless network is configurable with a variety of encryption schemes: WEP, WPA Personal / WPA Enterprise, or WPA2 Personal / WPA2 Enterprise. Regardless, as the AEBSn Administrator, you would have to configure one of these, otherwise the default configuration would be no encryption.
Sounds like the Stiletto 2 will not work with either the WPA Enterprise or either WPA2 versions, but should work just fine with either WEP or WPA Personal running on the AEBSn. I suggest disabling encryption until you can verify connectivity with the Stiletto, and then, reconfigure the AEBSn to use WPA Personal for wireless security.
The other thing to consider is the AEBSn's radio mode. The default is "802.11n (b/g compatible)", but you may need to run it in "802.11b/g compatible" mode for the Stiletto to connect.
