Airport extreme configuration error -6753

Hi
I have had my airport extreme and networking wirelessly with my imac, macpro and printer for months. However yesterday I started having trouble accessing my internet connection through the airport extreme. I have tried reseting several times but I always get a message stating 'error occurred while updating configuration (-6753). I can gain access to the internet using an ethernet cable to the airport extreme but it does not show up in airport utility when trying to establish a connection wirelessly. I run OS X 10.5.8 and airport extreme version 7.4.2.

I assume the error message you mentioned appears within AirPort Utility? If so, there seems to be a problem with the config that may be solved by a reset. First, try to power-cycle (i.e. unplug, wait a minute and replug) the base station. If that doesn't work, perform a factory default reset and then re-configure the base station:

  • Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration...

    AirPort Extreme: 7.4.1
    AirPort Utility: 5.4.2
    OS X Version: 10.5.7
When using AirPort Utility of my 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro I get a long wait (either Manual or Continue) while the pinwheel spins next to "Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration..." After about 5 mintes a get a dialog box
"An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
The Airport Extreme shows up in Finder, but I cannot access it. I'm connected to the internet just fine (I'm posting this).
Any ideas how I get to actually access the AEBS? I've read other threads on this (they're old and closed) but did not see a conclusion.
    Regards,
    John

Just went through the same thing myself. Set everything up, it worked like a charm, then I clicked on this innocent little button: Allow setup over WAN. I unchecked it because I don't want to allow WAN connections to configure my router, thank you very much.
However, what that checkbox really means is, "You are screwed, you can never configure your router ever again, regardless of whether you are connecting over the WAN, the wireless network or even the LAN (direct ethernet connection).
The other thing I discovered while researching this is, If you want to reset the router as you will absolutely HAVE TO DO to get around this problem once you've clicked and saved that one setting, and you have a blinking amber light, and holding the reset button for minutes doesn't appear to have any effect, what you do is: unplug the router, push the reset button and hold it, plug in the router while holding the reset button. 5 or so seconds later you will get a quick flashing amber like and you have successfully reset it.
Now I need to figure out how to file a bug to Apple. I assume this is a bug. It's a huge security whole and I am really ****** off about it.

  • Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme but error says Ethernet unplugged.

Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme and error says Ethernet Unplugged.

So, AirPort Utility running on the Windows Vista desktop can "see" the AirPort Extreme and displays its icon, but gives that error message at some point in the setup process? How far does it get?
Other questions that may help me (or somebody else) understand your problem better:
Which of the pieces were verified as working before the introduction of the AirPort Extreme?
Did you have the desktop computer attached to the Verizon GT704WGB with one of the Ethernet cables you are now trying to use? Which one? Have you tried the other one to be sure it also works?
Are you using the same port on the GT704WGB? Have you tried another one?
If the desktop has multiple ethernet ports, are you using the same one?
Had you done any special configuration of the ethernet port on the Verizon GT704WGB to get it to work with your desktop?
What category ethernet cable are you using? 3? 5? 5e? 6?

  • AirPort Utility hangs on "Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration"

Our main router is our AirPort Extreme. We have two other AirPort expresses on the WDS. Everything was working fine till tonight. All the computers can connect with the router and with each other, but the AirPort Extreme doesn't want to connect to the internet or let the AirPort Utility connect to it. When you click on it for either Auto or Manual config, it just hangs with the message, "Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration". After a while it will time out and say, "An error occurred while reading the configuration." I've tried connecting with both a MBP over wifi and a G5 tower via ethernet. Same result each time. Finally I did a factory reset on the thing. After a while of reconnecting I was able to load up a saved .baseconfig file and reinstall it onto the APExtreme. The AirPort freaked out again. It still gives out IPs and routes network traffic, but it wont connect to the internet and it wont let me connect to it via AirPort Utility.
    Any ideas?

Check the firmware of the airport, versus the software of the airport utility on the computers in question, the 2 should match reasonably; the latest of the 2 are airport utility 5.4.1, and firmware 7.4.1. So for instance if you have airport utility 5.4.1 and airport firmware 7.4 the 2 will not read correctly and may hang in random spots, or give you other weird problems. Assuming this does not fix it connect the airport directly to the computer through one of the LAN ports and configure it that way

  • Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig)?

Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig).
I know (in hindsight) that I can manually export it from the Airport Utility, but ideally I would like to include it in my Time Machine backup. I had a situation where my Airport Extreme (3rd generation) just stopped working (no lights, no power). I had not exported the config file. I bought a new Airport Extreme (5th generation) and had to manually configure the new router.
    Thanks

One option would be to use Automator and record the actions to run the AirPort Utility; save the configuration file to the desktop (or any other location you want), and then, close the utility. You can then either make this a part of your login startup programs. Time Machine then should be able to make backups.

  • Stuck on "Reading the airport extreme configuration"

Strange problem here. I have an AEBS with a Win7 PC and my Mac Pro connected to it, sharing a USB printer. All good until yesterday when I needed to troubleshoot a printer problem and tried to verify settings on the AEBS via my Mac Pro. It won't allow me in, just says "Reading the airport extreme configuration"... I let this go on for over 30 mins.
I tried restarting from Airport Utility. No luck.
I tried unplugging it, then waiting, then plugging it back in. No change.
I tried re-setting it using a paper clip. No change, but...
Airport Utility popped up on the Win 7 PC, and it allowed me in, no problemo. I restored and then verified my settings, etc.
But on my Mac, I can't get in. Any insights would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Add me to the list of users who are having the same problem. We are a school district that has 125 airports in 6 buildings. 70 of them are the new Airport Extreme Dual Band units. Of the 70 new units, 18 are having this problem.
"File -> Configure Other" does not change the behavior of the 18 unresponsive units. They can be programmed after a factory reset, and sometimes connected to shortly after the initial "Update" but after few hours, they cannot be accessed anymore.
I have been in contact with Apple support. Their only solution was to shrug their shoulders and tell me to start replacing them. After replacing 2, I had the same problems with 1 of the two replacements.
Something that may also be related. We have occasional short term power outages (3 seconds or less). After an outage like that, a significant number of the airports will reject clients until they (the airports) are properly rebooted.
Sounds like they need to fix the firmware.

  • Airport Extreme n giving 6753 error when trying to get to confi

Hello guys, I am new to the discussion, so I hope this is not a redundant question. When I try to confi my Airport Extreme n with the Airport Disk utility, I get -6753 error after a long delay. The base station has a green light, it is easily found, but I get this error. I cannot access my USB drive any longer on the Airport Extreme n. I still can see and access my wireless printer, TIVO, etc and can get on the Internet with all computers, I just can't change any confi with the software. Any help or insight into this problem would be appreciated

A Time Capsule at work was giving this exact same error after it would fail to write changes to the device via the AirPort Utility. After a phone call to Apple, they decided the device is "defective," and I should exchange it.
It would work intermittently with the error (over the two days I've messed with it), but it would often disappear from the network, etc. Taking advantage of the exchange seems like a hassle, but also like a no-brainer.

  • How do I add a guest network to existing airport extreme configuration?

I have an existing Airport Extreme configuation in my home Wifi network and I want to add a guest access point.  When I open the recently updated airport utilities, the screen no longer looks the way it used to, with the side bar on the left and my devices listed there for me to select (I also have an Airport Express).  I used to be able to select the Airport Extreme from the left side bar, then hit continue to change any settings.  Well now, since it updated, the screen looks different, with internet at the top, pointing to the Airport Extreme, then the Airport Express.  When I select the Airport Extreme, it no longer gives me the option to change the settings for it, which is where my problem lies!  Any help?  I know it's probably something very simple that I am missing, but I'm at a loss.

Why would I download a lower version of AirPort Utility?
To gain more functionality.....since AirPort Utility 6.0 is otherwise known as "AirPort Utility Lite" on the forums. It's a "first try" for Apple with a new look. While it does look nice, it has been downgraded as far as the features are concerned.
For example, if you open AirPort Utility 5.6 and click on the AirPort Extreme on the left, your Generation version will be displayed on the right side of the page.  There are many more advanced settings available in AirPort Utility 5.6 as well...that are not available on 6.0.
But, you don't have to install AirPort Utility 5.6 if you don't want to. I suggested it because it offers more features and will also look exactly the same as the AirPort Utility that you have used previously.
If your AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode, this indicates that you have another device...probably a modem/router....which is acting as the main router on your network. Bridge Mode is the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme in this case.
If you can post back with the make and model number of your "modem", we can check to confirm.
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be enabled unless you configure the AirPort Extreme to be the "main" router on your network, which is likely not possible. If you try to configure the AirPort Exteme otherwise, you will receive error messages and the network will not function correctly.

  • Airport Extreme giving errors after upgrading to ML Server

With OS X Server, your machine sees your Airport Extreme and can then configure it by opening ports, etc. once you turn on services. I upgraded from OS X Lion Server to ML Server and everything was fine for a second. Now whenever I click on the Extreme in the panel, I get the following error:
The error occurred while processing a command of type 'getIGDPortmaps' in plug-in 'servermgr_network'.

I don't know if this will help but here's what happened today.
While I was out of the house, I wanted to see if the VPN connection was still active and working on my phone. It told me that it couldn't log in so no big deal. I figured I'd check it when I got home.
I got home and checked the Server settings for VPN and sure enough, it was off. I turned the VPN setting to ON and let it write its information. I then went to the AEBS tab on the left pane and it asked me for the password. Once I put in the password for the AEBS, it worked just fine.
So far what I've done was erase any Keychain passwords related to the AEBS and turned on VPN service to get it working. Don't know if that'll work for everyone else but hopefully it does. Seems it's a tiny bug that should be stomped out rather quickly as it's a huge piece of OS X Server.

  • Airport Admin Utility Error 6753

Trying to add original Airport Express (for iTunes) to Windows wireless network based on a Belkin G54 router but after inputing router IP address and password in Airport Admin Utility I get the Error 6753 and flashing amber when the program tries to read router. Running Windows VISTA and Live OneCare. I've tried resetting, uninstalling OneCare, and newer Airport Utility but same result. Would appreciate any help with this.

Airport Utility is for the new Airport Extreme although one can use it to setup an Express to a point.
The Airport Admin Utility does not work with the new Extreme router.
When you install the Airport software from the CD you received when you bought the router it does not overwrite the older Airport software.

  • Airport extreme configuration problem with Netgear DG834PN

    Good morning,
I have a problem. I bought an AEBS via the WAN port to connect to my Netgear DG834PN.
I turned off the WiFi on the Netgear, I connected the AEBS in bridge mode, but with the iMac and other iDevice there are no problems.
On the contrary my Acer Travelmate (Win 7) does not want to connect ... fact is connected, the card tells me that is connected and has access to the internet, but does not show mewhen I browse any web page, Skype does not connect ...
Do you have suggestions for configuring the Netgear or dell'AEBS?

The Windows Firewall may be blocking the connection attempt. I have not used Windows 7, but on an XP machine, the Firewall settings are in the Control Panel. Check to see if this might be the case so you can "Allow" an "Exception".
The anti-virus software may also be blocking the connection. You may need to turn it off for the configuration, then turn it back on.
It will often help to try to configure the device using Ethernet, not wireless. Connect a spare Ethernet cable from your PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. Restart both the PC and AirPort Extreme, then open AirPort Utility again.
If still no luck, click the AirPort Utility File menu at the upper left hand corner of the screen and select Configure Other. Enter 10.0.1.1 into the address box and "public" (without the quotes) in the password box.

Then go to the DNS tab, the DNS server addresses will be found here.

  • Airport Extreme configuration with Linux server gateway.

    Hello all-
I am sorry if this is a repeat post.... I looked and could not find anything. I am trying to set up a linux server and have it act as a gateway between my Airport Extreme and my modem. I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme, or do I assign the address on the NIC in the linux box. The internal network will have OS X, Windows and Linux on it.
Also is there a flavor of linux that works better than others with Apple equipment?
Thank you for your patience and help!
    Cheers!

I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme
Yes, there is. You would do so using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Configure IPv4 = Manually) You can then enter the desired IP address information as required for your network configuration.

  • Airport Extreme Configuration with ADSL Libero (Italiano)

Sorry... this topic is in Italian, please post a question if you need a translation.
Buona navigazione a tutti!

When an Airport Extreme is set to Bridge mode, is DHCP off by default? That is, does the APE router also hand out ip addresses?
When the AirPort Extreme is in bridge mode, DHCP and NAT are turned off, so any devices that are connected to the Extreme will get their IP addresses and network information from the "main" router on the network.
The network configuration I have is: Cable Modem -> 4 port Leviton Fast Ethernet router -> Apple Airport Extreme
That should work if the Leviton is configured correctly to provide DHCP and NAT services
Ideally, I'd like to use the 3 open ports (with 4th one used for Airport Extreme) at times, connect to wireless with Airport Extreme and also use the 3 available ports on the Airport Extreme without any collisions.
That should be a simple matter providing that things are configured correctly.
What can I configure on the Airport Express so all of the traffic is routed correctly?
If you have the Extreme in bridge mode, all the routing is being done by the Leviton router. The Extreme is simply acting as an ethernet "switch" in this type of configuration. It performs no routing functions at all, but can provide a wireless network if you need that capability.
