Airport Extreme consistently needs restart

I'm using a 54mbps Airport Extreme in Bridge mode with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Both antennas on the linksys router have broken off, so I have disabled the wireless portion of the router and just use it for wired connections. I previously was using an older "Snow" Airport in Bridge mode and had no problems.
Since updating to the faster Airport Extreme, I've found that the wireless network will disappear and the Airport becomes unresponsive, not showing up in Airport Utility. The power must be reset in order for the network and Airport to show up again in Airport Utility. After a restart, the router works fine for hours at a time. I've seen nothing suspicious in the logs, but at least once a day, it must be reset. This is using Airport firmware 5.7.
Has anyone seen or solved this problem before?

Got the same problem, which I hoped Apple would have fixed in 10.5.2.
I go through all the same steps above, and it always fails with
"AirPort Utility was unable to find your base station after restarting.
The settings for this base station have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the base station. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."

  • I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?

I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?  The company that supports the system says I need to open the following - 8200, 8016, 8116, 10019, 12088.  All help is appreciated.

Open AirPort Utility on the PC, select the Airport Extreme and click Manual Setup
    Click the Advanced icon
    Click the Port Mapping tab
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the connection list to set things up
Reference pages 49-51 in the Apple AirPort Networks guide for more info
IF.....you do not see a Port Mapping tab when you click the Advanced icon, then that would mean that the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode and the main routing functions for the network are being provided by another device.
You will need to set up the port mapping on that device, which is likely your modem/router or gateway.

  • How do I add a repeater Airport Extreme? Need a little more range.

Just added the new Airport Extreme to my home/office network. Since my macbook pro is a dual core and not a dual core2, I am not able to use the new "n" wireless network. Not happy. So...I need more range to hit my office which is through 3 walls. How do I go about setting up a repeater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you...Thomas

Neptune is correct and your impression of N to
    dismay
you is not founded. My G side of my network is now
    4
to 5 times faster than before the N router and
    just
about as fast as the N side of my network. So
    there
are efficiencies to be gained from the N router.
I concur. Adding the 2 AE 802.11n allows all my
802.11g connected devices to use the maximum speed
provided by my DSL line, 1.5 Gbit. I tested this
using dslreports.com tools. I can get the maximum
speed provided by my DSL provider (Verizon) from
anywhere in my hour (on 3 different floors).
Also I can use my iTunes streaming server (off a
Infrant NAS) to go to maximum speed. And Apple TV
streaming is working from all my machines, Macs and
    PCs.
So there are MANY benefits to using multiple AEs with
    801.11g devices.
Thanks to all. Just installed another airport extreme....but have no idea how to add it to my current network. I want to make it a repeater to extend my network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does AirPort Extreme Card Need Config?

In reading some of the discussions relative to enabling WPA security, I have only seen reference to configuring the base station such as AiportExpress. Having done that are there any changes which need to be made to the AirPort Extreme card? For some reason I thought both needed to be configured to use WPA securely. I now get the distinct impression that only the base station needs to have anything done to it.
Could someone please clarify this for me?

    Hello bdahm,
Since the network is controlled by the base station the airport card only needs to know the correct the info to join the network.
Lets think of it like this. WEP and WPA are types of keys similar to a car. If you where to compare a standard Toyota key to a hight tech Mercedes Benz, you would realized that one is far superior than the other but it is not quite wide spread as the first. Like a car the network can take you places and as long as you have the correct key.
The base station is like the car and the airport card is like the key. The nice thing about the card is that it can transform into ether key as long as it provided with the correct code for the network.
So when setting up network the WPA key is setup and configured on the base station, and the card is told what style of key it should use.
I hope this clears some things up and does not confuse you more

  • Just bought an AirPort Extreme, in need for some help/suggestions.

    Hello all.
Just purchased an AirPort Extreme today, very excited about it as my old router was getting worse and worse.
Just finished setting up the basics of the extreme right now, set up the network name, password, and all that.
I obviously know this is a DualBand router, and want to take advantage of it!
    I have two main questions...
    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
My list of devices in the household:
    - 2012 iMac
      - (2) 2008 Unibody MacBook's.
      - iPad
      - A few iPhones
      - Apple TV
      - PS3
Most of the time we have two of the Mac's running at the same time, as well as a few iPhones connected based on who's home or not.
For my Apple TV and PS3, I love to get the best performance possible... Therefore I usually have those running a wired connection to the router.
Any kind of help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty computer friendly, just want to know the best ideas for the best performance!
    Thanks again.

    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
Do exactly nothing. By default, both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are already broadcasting a signal with the same wireless network name.
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
Do exactly nothing. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band based on their capabilities (an older iPhone cannot connect to 5 GHz, for example)...and...the relative distance between the wireless device and AirPort Extreme.
If you have newer devices that are capable of connecting using 5 GHz, they will connect at that frequency if they are in the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.  If you walk your laptop a few rooms away, it will probably connect to 2.4 GHz, since those signals are much stronger than 5 GHz signals.
The point is, you do not need to be concerned about this. Devices connect to the best signal quality automatically.

  • Resetting airport extreme - will not restart

I have an airport express which i have bee using to extend the network for my airport extreme.  I added a security password and cannot get the express recognized under the airport utility.  I have done hard and factory resets and followed directions to add the express with the password - everything works fine until i update and get the message that the devices are restarting.  I get a message stating the Express setting have been successfully updated and Aiport Express will restart, however after a few minutes i get this message:
AirPort Utility was unable to find your AirPort wireless device after restarting. - It says to try again but the express cannot be found unless i reset it.
this is the link to the directions I have been following - have tried hard, factory resets with and without ethernet cable:

Any help on how to fix would be appreciated
    Thanks

There were incorrect settings which caused this problem. Did a hard reset of airport and then re did the setup.

    hola alzheimer78 !
try a +factory restore+ by pulling the unit from power and inserting a paperclip or pointy object into the reset button at the back of the extreme. keep the button pressed while you put the plug back into the outlet. wait until the extreme starts flashing amber rapidly (5-10 seconds) then release the button.
    does that work ?

  • My Airport Extreme "disappeared"  Need help

I have a MacBook Pro which has a built in Airport Extreme. I never used it because I have an existing external one that I've been using and is hooked up to a phone line.
Today, I went to my Airport Utility and now the computer does not see its own built in Airport Express! Can someone tell me what happened? I'm afraid someone nearby saw it, is tapping off of it and encrypted it. Yes? No?
Anyway, how do I get it back?

If you are talking about your built in airport card, all you must do is Turn Airport ON. Go into the Network Preferences pane. There is a button to turn the Airport ON..(and a checkbox to put it in your menu bar so you can access it without going into preferences again..)

  • Airport Extreme consistently dropping internet connection

    Hi folks,
I've been banging my head on this for over a week to no avail, so I'm hoping beyond hope that someone here has experienced and found a solution.
I have a 4th gen AEBS connected to a cable modem. Roughly a week ago, all devices (lap tops, phones, ipad, apple TV) became unable to connect to my WPA2-enabled network. Powercycled both the modem and the router, problem solved. 5-10 minutes later, we lose all connectivity again. Airport Utilitiy shows everything working properly. Connect an ethernet cable from the AEBS to a laptop, works fine even when the wi-fi doesn't.
Reset the AEBS back to factory default, left it an open network for a bit and all devices were able to connect just fine for several hours. As soon as I rebuilt my network and enabled WPA2, same issue cropped up. This is consistent over 4 full resets. Open network, no problem. Closed network, no connection.
Through my digging, I found a tip on changing the IPv6 configuration so I tried that; again, no dice.
Anyone have any thoughts on additional things to try? Many thanks.

If only connected by wireless is causing the dropouts then there is a possibility that Wi-Fi interference may be the cause. Per chance do you live in an environment that has a high concentration of other Wi-Fis in the area? Apartment, condo, or dorm?
Have you had an opportunity to run your Mac's built-in Wireless Diagnostics yet? If not, please do; if yes, please provide your results.
To run the Wireless Diagnostics: Option-click the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar > Open Wireless Diagnostics ... > Continue
In addition, from the Wireless Diagnostics menu bar > Window > Utilities > Info. What the values you are getting for Active PHY Mode, RSSI, Noise, & Rate
From the same Utilities window > Wi-Fi Scan > Scan Now. Are there a few or many other networks present? Specifically look for those that are operating on the same Channel as yours.
Finally, let's get an idea on welll your Wi-Fi network is performing: Utilities > Performance. What is the average SNR value (top graph)? Is it greater than 25 dB?

  • My Airport Extreme always needs a reboot for it to see an external drive plugged into it. Is this normal?

The title pretty much sums it up. Every few days I have to reboot my AE in order for it to recognize the external drive (iOmega Prestige 500gb) I have plugged into it. Needless to say, it's pretty frustrating. I was hoping to setup the external drive so all of my computers could use it as a central device, but needing to reboot all the time kind of kills the convenience. Wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

Relax. It's normal for an iOS device to turn on when it is plugged in and charging. You didn't hurt anything. As long as it has a charge, you can use it and it should come with a sufficient charge to use it right out of the box.
Your phone will be fine. Charge it when you need to charge it. You didn't damage anything.

  • After we installed a new airport extreme, the imac running snow leopard displays black box msgs saying to hold down the power button and or the reset button and then restart your computer. Can anyone provide info that can help resolve this issue?

Experiencing similar issues on both imac and power book: after replacing an original airport extreme with a new airport extreme both computers display a black box msgs that reads: "...turn off your computer by holding down the power button and or the reset button for a few seconds and then restart your computer."...
one of the printers are usb'd to the imac. The printer is not "seeing" the imac nor will it print wireless from the powerbook which was the norm prior to the upgrade on the airport extreme.
Upon restart, the imac does not "see" the wireless keyboard or the mouse until it is "found" again.
At this time the imac or the powerbook can get on line.

It sounds like your computer is getting Kernel Panics. Please look at About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages and if the message seen on your display is like the one in the link then you have confirmed you had a KP. KP's can be tough to track down because they can be caused by software or hardware. The first place to start is to post the complete crash log so we can look at it, often there are clues in the log. You can find it at:

  • New Airport Extreme, new problems.

Hi all. I have just purchased and installed a new airport extreme and am having some issues with it already. Last night during install, When it got to the end of the setup process, the computer screen said that the Airport extreme was to restart. Well, that seemed to take forever, and then the airport that was visable from the Airport utility disappeared. The Green light on the unit was on, indicating no problems, but I was not able to access the internet. I played with it for a while, and tried resetting and going through the set up 2 more times, with the same result. I had given up and was going to contact apple in the morning when suddenly my Ipad received a message from my friend who had sent the message about an hour before. I assumed that the internet was now working, which I confirmed with my Ipad and my Imac. All seemed ok. I even downloaded the Airport app for my I pad and could see the device from the screen.
Today, my Ipad's airport app could not see the device, yet the network was working. Is this typical?
Also, can you hide the SSID (network name). My last wireless router had this feature, which I thought was nice.
Last thing. I can't seem to print from my wireless printer any more. My previous router worked fine for this. It now says it is not connected any more. The network name and password are the same with this Airport as my last router, so I figured it shoud work fine. In the manual, it doesn't seem to mention wireless printing, only printers connected to the Airport with a USB. Does it only work that way?
Sorry for all the questions. If This thing is not going to co-operate, it will be returned to the store. I normally love Apples products, but this one has me scratching my head in doubt.

First you can block the SSID, you need to go into Airport Utility and click on wireless then click the wireless network options and make sure the Create a closed network is selected.  Regarding the iOS Airport Utility that could have sometimes.  On your printer the Airport Extreme has a USB connector that you can connect a printer to it.  It you want to add the printer to the network wirelessly then you may need to go in to you printer setup.

  • I can no longer connect to the internet via Airport Extreme.  HELP!

Over the weekend my Macbook told me that my Airport extreme firmware needed to be updated, so I did that, now I have no internet connection from the Airport. I have no problem connecting to the Airport itself, but I have no actual internet connection. The connection is fine when I plug an ethernet cable directly into the computer.
I really hope someone can help with this!

Hi DaveX83 and welcome to the discussions.
    A few things to try.
Press the reset button once on the back of your Extreme and let it restart. Check for proper operation.
If no help there, keep the ethernet cable connected, and open Airport Utility. Click on Manual Setup near the bottom of the pane. On the next screen click the Airport icon at the upper left of the pane, then click Wireless in the line just below that reads Summary - Time Capsule - Wireless - Access.
Check to see that your wireless is set up, security set up, passwords, etc. You may need to reconfigure your wireless settings again and update the Extreme to store them and restart.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Express can't find internet during initial install to extend wifi from Airport Extreme

Currently have Airport Extreme but need to reinforce signal.  Bought Airport Express.  Only way to get Airport Express to find Internet is to connect directly to cable modem (even then, it did NOT show up on Airport Utility).  Thus, have not been able to configure Express either wirelessly or using Ethernet.

    Thanks for the info.
Please power off the AirPort Extreme, wait a minute, then power it back up.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release, then allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If you plan to leave the AirPort Express permanently connected to the AirPort Extreme, run the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
If you plan to have the AirPort Express connect using wireless only, then do not connect an Ethernet cable to the Express at any time
    On the iPad home screen.....
    Tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Wait a few seconds for a setting of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station to appear
Tap on AirPort Express just below that setting
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express.  Keep the name short and simple, like Express, for example
    Tap on Next
The utility will set the Express up for you automatically with the correct settings.
When you see the message appear of Setup Complete, tap Done
You are done, assuming that the AirPort Express is operating correctly.

  • Airport Extreme - Cannot join a wireless network

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and cannot get it to find a wireless network. In the Airport Utility I receive the following messages, "Joining a wireless network….An error occurred joining the selected wireless network.". I cannot proceed past this point. When I select "manual" configure I get the same error message. I've tried repeatedly disconnecting the cable & power from the modem and the airport extreme and then restarting but nothing happens. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you have a cable modem, you will need to power it off for at least 15-20 minutes and pull the battery if is has one as it is remembering the last device (probably your computer) that is was connected to. Power it back up after 20 minutes and connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the AEBS.
Suggest you do a factory default reset to clear the corrupted settings and start over again on the AEBS
    Power down the AEBS
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 8-10 seconds
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS to help AirPort Utility connect with the device.
You will be configuring the AEBS to "Share a public IP address" and "create a wireless network. The guided setup will step you through.
