Airport Extreme crashing G5/Tiger 10.4.11

Okay, I've read through some of the archived threads regarding AirPort Extreme crashing 10.4.11 and was wondering if this issue has been resolved? Unfortunately I have to run Tiger on my office machines in order to run Classic, but that shouldn't be an issue. I've been with Apple exclusively since 1987 and this is just so unlike them to not address this issue in a timely manner or at least make it known that this device does not work with Tiger.
I guess I could go on ranting but what's the point... How hard can this be guys?

same problem here. i recently upgraded my old flying saucer airport extreme to a new one, and i have multiple machines and multiple OS's, old and new.
my old g4 tower is running 10.4.11 and crashes the second i turn on wireless. on top of that i cannot upgrade the OS because it does not have intel processors. however my older laptop is running the same OS and has the same airport card as the tower and it continues to connect to the airport fine.
i would gladly upgrade my OS on both old machines if i could (unless i am missing something and it is possible).

  • Latest Airport Extreme crashes PPC iMac (Tiger)

I replaced my spaceship Airport Extreme base Station with the latest 5th generation Airport Extreme—I set it up with a MacBook running OS10.5.8, and now the PPC iMac crashes (Tiger). Kernal panic attack.
Apple info said older Macs (running Tiger) could still use new Airport Extreme, but you needed Leopard to set it up. Which I have. So why is my iMac crashing?

I used Airport Utility 5.5.3 to set up Airport Extreme.

  • Selecting Airport Extreme crashes Finder, have to connect to it as a server

I just started getting this out of nowhere.
I have not installed anything new, or moved or reconfigured any hardware recently.
I have to open Finder and connect to my Airport Extreme as a server.
If I try to select it from the Finder under 'Shared' in the sidebar, Finder crashes.
    Every. Single. Time.
One thing I just noticed is that my I used to have to click [Drive name] [Root folder with same name as drive folder] -> Folders.
That 2nd step is gone now. It's just [Drive name] -> Folders.
I have a feeling a manually deleting my Time Machine sparse bundle or something borked this. Any ideas?

    What the actual.
I rebooted. Everything is fine now. Back to the way it was.

  • Airport Extreme crashes when transferring files in iTunes

    Hi guys!
I'm running itunes library off an airdisk for one of my computers, it works fine when i play music from it but it crashes my airport extreme every time i try to edit or add music into the library. it will just say that i'm disconnected from that drive after itunes hangs for about 5 minutes and my network (internet, home network, airdisk) will stop working until i restart my router.
i've had similar set up before with a G5 and never had an issue, but that was on ethernet, my new setup is through wifi. I've read that there was an issue when transferring large files from computer to airdisk over wifi, but i didn't see the issue in finder, this only happens in itunes.
i have itunes 10.0.0.1 and the lasted firmware for airport extreme. I've tried simply dragging the files into my itunes and even tried using home sharing to transfer songs from another computer with a local itunes library, both crash the router. I ended up dragging one album at a time (about 10 songs at a time), it works for the first few transfers, but eventually locks up after awhile.
Did a bit of research, some say it's might be some kind of channel interference, did a little istumbler and it only showed very little noise so i'm not sure that's the case. is anyone else experiencing this? thanks in advance!

The fixed IP address solved the problems I was having with Time Machine and I did verify that the problem was not Time Machine but any disk access, however yes, it is possible that iTunes is having a problem dealing with a networked disk. I don't think it's the way that Apple really intended it to work, with the iTunes library on a networked disk, however you might be able to come up with some work arounds to make it work. Here's some suggestions if the fixed IP does not solve the problem:
Copy files you want to import to the drive first using the Finder. Put the files in the folder where all your music is automatically sorted if you have "copy to iTunes folder" and "organize iTunes folder" selected in preferences. What you should have now is all the artist named folders and then the new music all listed in this directory. Sort the window in list view so all the music and the folders are separated to make it easier to select the music. Now drag the music into iTunes. If it's in this folder, the files should not be copied into iTunes. They should just get linked to and then moved into their proper folders. It would also help diagnosing the problem if you could find out whether copying the same files using the Finder did work, so you would be looking for a work-around and also further diagnosing exactly what the problem is.
If you have an external USB drive, you could use that instead and plug it into the Time Capsule for access, but into the computer just when you need to manage/add to the media on the drive.
Another problem you are likely to come across is if you attempt to play back video content, especially HD content. I don't think iTunes expects the media to be on a network drive and therefore does not buffer sufficiently to play the content smoothly like it does if you were streaming the media to an AppleTV, for example.

  • AirPort Extreme Crash during PPTP connect using VPN on demand

I can reproduce this crash consistently every time.
My AEBSn is running 7.4.2. My MBP is running 10.6.2.
I set up a PPTP connection, tick "send all traffic over VPN connection" in the advanced options.
I add a domain to the "VPN on Demand" list and apply changes.
I click connect, and the AEBS light immediately goes amber. A few seconds later, it's back to green and everything is groovy...unless I try to connect again.
The problem is solved by simply removing the domain from "VPN on Demand."

    Hi
I have had this problem with my Airport Extreme since day 1 and it is extremely irritating. Using Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 I can crash the router any time I like (or more to the point, really really dislike) by simply initiating a PPTP VPN from any client (wired or wireless) behind the Airport Extreme. The device flashes orange, drops everyone's internet connection and then about a minute later, comes back up again.
Whenever I have to connect to another site using VPN, I need to use NextG internet connection instead of my home cable connection. Any help with this would be gold because other than this really annoying problem (oh and the 'must reboot everytime you make a minor modification to configuration' requirement) I find it a great rock solid wireless access point.

  • My airport extreme crashes thanks to Lacie HDD

    Hi all,
I have a airport extreme (5g) with a Lacie HDD (2 years old) connected to it in my living room.
Now when i'm busy on my HDD, copying stuff or watching movies, my macbook tells me that teh connection with the HDD is interrupted.
When I got that messege, my WIFI fails to. When I have removed the powercable and put it back, it takes the airport extreme a few seconds to restart.
So what can I do, so the airport extreme wont crash?!?
    greetz

The drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), correct?
Are you using a Mac computer?
The drive will not appear automatically on your desktop when you connect it to the AirPort Extreme.
How are you trying to mount the drive on your desktop when the drive is connected to the AirPort Extreme?
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered, so it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub when you attach a drive to this port....even if the drive has its own power supply.

  • Weird AirPort Extreme Crashing Problem

I have an oldish 15" Powerbook, and a newer 1.5Ghz 12" Powerbook. This problem involves both, but is more centered on the 15" model.
I had just zeroed the drive, and re-installed 10.3.9 the previous night. When I booted Phi up the next morning, it crashed (The screen went grey, and that text box popped up and stated that 'you need to restart your computer'.). Restarting the computer didn't help.
I was able to boot into Single-Mode though. I tried a few things in single, and was able to get the computer to boot up normally. However, once it booted up, I noticed that the AirPort scanner icon didn't show up in the MenuBar. I had used the previous night without any problems.
I wanted to determine whether there was something wrong with the Computer, or with the AirPort Extreme card, so I removed the card, and placed it in my 12" Powerbook. When I booted the 12" up, it crashed in the same manner as the 15" had. Again, I was able to get the 12" to boot into Single. I tried a few things, but couldn't get the 12" to successfully start-up like I had with the 15". I powered the notebook down, removed the Airport Extreme card, and then was able to get the 12" to start up normally.
Has anyone encountered anything like this? Is there a way to make the AirPort Extreme Card work? What happened? Why/how did the airport crash the computers?

  • Crashing Airport Extremes

I have read over and over on this forum and a great many others, how the saucer shaped Airport Extremes crash, sometimes several times a day. No one to date has posted a real solution, and by real I mean something other than "reset it to factory and set it up again" which yes I have done and no it doesn't work.
Let me say that I have numerous Vlans here at where I work. Only on one Vlan, the main one and the largest, does the Airports crash. If I move them someplace where nothing connects to them, like my workbench, they run seemingly forever. If I connect them to another Vlan in my office and use them for that, they never crash.
I have done this with 5 or 6 Airport Extremes. Backgrading the firmware did not help. It may have helped some people, but I don't think that is  the cause. Something ON the network, perhaps Windows doing DHCP is crashing them. I have noticed one thing in common: Everywhere an airport crashes regularly, there is someone using a Windows laptop using DHCP. Places where only Macs connect, I do not have this problem.
Does this stir anyone's imagination to suggest a possible cause? Could it be a DHCP option that Windows is trying to query the DHCP server for? I am using a 3rd party DHCP server (meaning NOT Windows). Just tossing that out there.
Also, can we all agree that archiving past UNRESOLVED issues is a bad practice? That means I am going to have to repost and say everything everyoen else has already said all over again because I cannot post to an archived thread.

    Does this help?

  • AL iMac Crashes Gigabit Airport Extreme

I purchased the 24" 2.4Ghz aluminim iMac and the latest gigabit Airport Extreme N, a few weeks back. I was already using the previous non-gigabit Aiport Extreme N with a macbook, macbook pro, apple tv, tivo, and xbox 360 with no problems.
After getting the iMac up and running however, my Airport Extreme started crashing every few hours. I replaced it with the new gigabit Airport Extreme but the crashes continued. If I turn the iMac off completely, everything works fine. However, with the iMac on, the Airport Extreme will crash a few times a day. By crash I mean that all devices lose their connection to the Airport and the network is no longer visible to any of the devices. I have to powercycle (unplug) the Airport Extreme and then all devices can connect to the network again - until the next crash.
I've seen that others have problems with the connection being dropped - but is anyone having issues with the Airport Extreme crashing altogether?

I should also note that the iMac and Airport Extreme are not very close to each other. They are abut 25 feet apart in different rooms.

  • Why is my Airport Extreme (A1143) so slow?

This weekend my Airport Extreme crashed and I had to create a new wireless network to get it up and running again. Everything looked okay, but the internet isn't so constant as it was before. Could anyone explain what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

The first thought that comes to mind is that an AirPort router is designed for 3-4 years of home use.......and the Airport Extreme that you have is anywhere from about 6-8 years old depending on when it was purchased......so the AirPort just may be heading downhill.
If you have reset the AirPort back to factory defaults settings and have reconfigured it a few times, and it is still acting up, this pretty much confirms that the power supply inside the AirPort is starting to fail, and the AirPort will need to be replaced in the near future.
It could not hurt to try a few more resets, but I think you will find that they probably will not help much at this point.

  • Time Machine clueless about external HD connected to Airport Extreme

This is not my first post about HD connected to Airport Extreme. Just came back from Apple store. Spoke to Geniuses there in tech support desk and they are clueless.
Here is situation: have 7 Macs in the house connected to Airport Extreme wirelessly. In that respect things are working fine. Last week I purchased brand new WD My Book external HD and connected it to Airport Extreme using USB (it also has Fire Wire but that is not a point here).
As per forum advices I re-formated drive using disk utility to Mac Extended journaled, GUID. here is result:
iMAC x 3, with Tiger - see, mount and use My Book easily, shows on desktop as mounted drive
MacBook Pro w. Tiger - same as above, back up every day to My Book
MacBook with Leopard x 2 - no My Book on desktop, Time Machine doesn't see it
Mac Mini with Leopard - same as above, no trace of My Book, Time Machine doesn't see it
    * This problem evolved from me having regular 160 GB FAT32 HD connected to Airport Extreme. Again Tiger machines were using that drive every day no sweat.
    * Then I decided to upgrade all Macs to Leopard for one single reason only - Time Machine. (Good that I didn't do it but rather decided to introduce new, bigger and better USB drive first).
    * Western Digital My Book is being sold in Apple stores as "drive that is recognized by Time Machine" so I bought 1TB unit.
    * All Macs and Airport Extreme are up to date.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance,
    Zack

I cannot tell you why your Apple Genius told you what he did, but he/she was dead wrong. Apple sells its Time Capsule product, so they are not interested in making the AEBS a product competitor.
I will give you a little secret for which you will forever be indebted to me.
Open your Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the prompt enter or paste the following command pressing RETURN after:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Miraculously your problem will be Solved.

Am replacing airport extreme with Time Machine and want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow leopard. Am told I should manually back up into T Machine before OS update but set up utility won't allow anything with OS below 10.5 and I'm 10.4.11. What to do?

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

  • Finder crashes when I try to access airport extreme 2tb

As of this afternoon when I try to access my airport extreme 2TB through Finder, Finder either crashes or becomes unresponsive. Any ideas why?

Finder crashes occur both on my MacBook Pro (4,1) and MacBook Air (2,1). There is very little in common between the hardware of the two systems except the Santa Rosa processor. One has HDD and the other SSD. One has 6GB in DDR2 memory in two dimms and one 2GB DDR3 soldered. One has an 8600M and one a 9400. One starts a bunch of apps at login and one starts nothing. And so on. Since it happens on different kinds of systems, it's definitely not a hardware problem with certain specific hardware. And I'm pretty sure I saw a report from someone with a MacPro.
I've looked at a lot of finder crash logs. A number of them seem to happen when something (memory or an object) is being freed and an error occurs. This causes an abort and the finder is killed and restarts. Not exactly a "crash". More like controlled flight into the ground. The other cases are probably not catching the error and getting seg faults, so those actually are crashes. Unfortunately, the place this happens seems to be different every time but usually related to finder or AppKit.
I suspect a memory corruption bug somewhere. I've pushed my system by opening and closing
folders, scrolling up and down, and opening and closing subfolders, and once the problem happens, it is usually reproducible for a few minutes (or a few repeats of the action that caused the crash).
Then it will often "magically" start working or a slight variation of behavior, e.g., opening a folder directly vs. using a finder window sidebar alias (or vice-versa) will work.

  • Crashes with Airport extreme

I'm trying to set up a wireless network at home, part of which involves an external hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme base. My iTunes library is too big to keep on the laptop, so it is on the external drive. When I'm listening to stuff through iTunes, everything seems to work alright for a while, and then iTunes locks up. I get a spinning pinwheel that goes on forever. If I force quit, it will be removed from the list of running applications, the window will disappear from the desktop, but the icon in the dock will have a little bullet next to it as if it were still running. If I re-open the force quit menu, iTunes will return to the list every time, even though there is no evidence that it is actually running. If I try to restart the computer, the whole thing freezes up and the computer can only be forced to shut down by holding the power button down. After the restart, iTunes continues to remain useless (if not crash-inducing) and the external hard drive is inaccessible. The only temporary fix is to re-setup the base station with the airport utility. No problems arise if the hard drive is connected directly to the computer. This problem has happened with each version of iTunes since the AirPort Extreme was released.
Here's what I got (from the wall out)
    DSL modem (in bridge mode)
Airport Extreme (handling DHCP/NAT stuff, up-to-date firmware))
-printer and LaCie d2 250 gig HD connected via USB to Base Station
-First gen MacBook pro 17" connected via AirPort to Base Station (which I don't believe have airports that support the n protocol)
-AirPort Express (doesn't affect stability. the freeze-ups happen whether I'm on the network through the base station or the express)
    help please
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I have the same exact problem as you! I have been asking everyone on this forum for help about this, but nobody ever responds with an answer. I tried resetting my modem and router, and that seemed to help, but after copying files to different hard drives, I still get an error... after I check to see if anything copied, it actually worked! It never shows me the copy animation, all I get is an hourglass. When I try copying wirelessly to the same drive using my Macbook Pro, it works like a champ! I thought maybe the Airport Extreme doesn't work well with XP, but others say they have no problems. Should I reformat a partition of my hard drive to something that works better with the Airport Extreme?

  • 20-in Intel iMac (early 2006) Tiger -- configuring Airport Extreme Card

Hi -- I come from a mostly "not mac" background and am having difficulty diagnosing a slow internet connection -- and can't tell if I'm trying to use the right tool for the job. (I am using MAC OS X 10.4.11)
My home network uses a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and I've got 3 computers that connect using the router (including the iMac) -- the other two are Windows-based machines. We've got a 2-story house and I've been moving the router and computers around the house a bit trying to come up with the best configuration for a good wireless connection (I'm going to be ordering a supplemental antenna, but don't have it yet).
The two Windows machines (one using a relatively old PCI wireless card) get strong signals. I'm not even sure how strong a signal the iMac gets as I am not sure which utility allows me to see this. I do know that it has a painfully slow connection speed (at least web pages load at a crawl...).
    I've got an Airport Extreme Card (0x14E4, 0x89). Firmware: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9).
I went to Apple's support downloads, and attempted to install firmware updates, but I am getting a message that indicates that these updates are not applicable to my card. I updated the Airport Utility software, but as far as I can tell that utility is looking for an Airport Extreme base that I don't have. Other than that I haven't seen any applicable information using that utility.
I was hoping to reach a configuration area that would allow me to specify 802.11b or g, and allow me to specify the channel -- but other than in the internet sharing section I don't see a place that allows me to do this. (I've currently got our home network on a 802.11g network on channel 8.) We're using WPA personal encryption -- which does appear to be recognized by the Airport Extreme card.
Am I missing something? I've got 3 "Airport" utilities but none of them seem to allow me to specifically configure the internal card. I've gone to "network" under System Preferences, and although I can see a "configure" button when I click on "Airport," it's pretty basic and doesn't allow me to set the channel or anything other than encryption & a password.
I would appreciate any help you can give me. Is this card so outdated that I should invest in a newer one? Am I limited by my outdated OS? (I hesistate to upgrade OS's when things are working -- in the Windows environment at least newer isn't always better...) Thanks. mcaren

Thank you Duane for your response.
I have only noticed a huge difference in the connection speeds of my iMac and our other computers in the last 6 mos. to a year. I did notice an improvement in speed when using a Rosewill USB wireless adapter -- I had a good wireless signal but would intermittently lose connectivity (and their user support was basically nil...).
I can't tell if I'm actually seeing an improvement in our other machines' connection (perhaps from the tweaking I'm able to do) or if in fact the iMac is slowing significantly. I think it's the latter. I've actually swapped out machines in the same position to see if location is at fault -- and I get no improvement in connection speed. I've had the iMac connected with ethernet to our router when possible because it has had such a slow wireless connection, but I needed to move the router recently and would like the iMac to stay in another room.
I've also read a lot about connection speed issues with Airport, but these reports are usually blamed on Leopard updates (there might be similar Tiger issues, but I don't read about them...).
Oh well. I'm hoping someone out there has some tricks up their sleeve as to how I can improve my wireless connection speed. Thanks for the help! mcaren
