Airport Extreme Cuts Out

This is something I have never dealt with much less heard of before - Our home network is an AX (n) working off of a Comcast cable modem, the AX is also tied into two small (5 port) Leviton hubs in a structured media panel. So through the AX we get wireless and an Ethernet network for all the computers, home theatre and Apple TV. On Sunday (two days ago) the signal became very intermittent, and then yesterday died all together. After much trial and error I have the AX back up (and the family mutiny under control) but the AX has to be completely isolated form the Ethernet connections and downstream hubs, and if I even power up the hubs (no connections) the AX goes to the Amber Light of Misery. The only common point of connection currently is that all the devices are powered off of a common 12v power. If anyone has any insight in how to deal with this condition I would really appreciate you help - Thanks

When that amber light is on, does AirPort Utility give you any detail on why the AirPort Extreme is unhappy?
Can you test your 12v. power source to see if it's providing reliable voltage and current?
I'd start by testing one component at a time. Disconnect the AirPort Extreme from your cable mode. Cycle power on the modem, then connect a computer to it with an Ethernet cable. Verify your Internet connectivity. Then disconnect the computer, cycle modem power again, and connect your AirPort Extreme to the modem again with nothing else connected to it. Turn off AirPort on one of your computers and connect it to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable. Use that method to test each Ethernet port on the AirPort Extreme. If all tests so far are successful, then connect one of the hubs. Continue adding equipment until something no longer works. Eventually you should be able to isolate the problem part.

  • Airport Extreme card out of eMac into old G5

After getting a new iMac, i have reassigned all the Macs in our home. My old G5 tower had no wireless card. So, i took the Airport Extreme card out of an old eMac and put it into the G5. It fit, and I thought I had the problem solved. But, I am not getting the network to show up. Is the card compatible?

Current generation iBook G4's have a built in Airport Extreme interface - they don't make use of a user-installable Airport Extreme card.
Does your Mac have an Airport menu item (the fan-shaped icon near the right side of the MacOS menu bar)? If so, it already has an installed Airport interface.

  • Airport keeps cutting out on me

Hello I believe there may be an answer to this problem I have but due to this wireless problem I do not have the time to search and read the posts. I have notice for a month now that my wireless signal gets cut off. I at first thought it was my router but I have used my brother's and friend's computer and they connect and stayed connected with no problem. I have a 17" PowerBook G4 1.0 GHz and I notice that I can connect to the internet for a few minutes only. Depending how long the PowerBook has not been used, the internet connection can last from 1 minute to 5 minute tops. I have other computers and they connect no problem. Just this PowerBook stays connected for a little while and then disconnects. When I try to connect again, my wifi id can not be located. I can not connect at all. If I shut the PowerBook down and wait for 5 minutes, the power book connects again, for a little bit before the signal is gone. I believe that my Airport Extreme Card is going bad or gone bad but could it be anything else. I appreciate any info

I have also been having a lot of problems with my internet on AirPort. Everything is fine when connected with an ethernet cable. The Airport signal is strong and my iMac runs off the wireless network with no problems. The wireless network is run from a D-Link Extreme G wireless router.
My problem is that when surfing I will stall out at about 5 mins. I have to turn off the Airport and turn it back on, then I'll get another 5 mins. and repeat...
It's getting very frustrating. I have searched and have found that a lot of people have the same problem with their PB G4's but there have been no answers. I'm hoping someone can help.

  • Airport Extreme dropping out and can't connect PC anymore

    Hello
Suddenly, a couple of weeks ago, my internet connection dropped in the middle of surfing. I couldn't reconnect, Airport was only seeing the base station spasmodically and when I did try to connect I was being asked for a password which wasn't recognised. Hours later I called the support line and was advised to do a hard reset which I did, new name, same password. Now I'm reconnected most of the time, but it has dropped out a few times and the signal seems generally weaker. Something's not right.
I had not at that point done the July 1st update so it's not to do with that. I haven't a clue why it suddenly started playing up so strangely. (Though I have noticed a new unsecured wireless network in range and wondered if someone was 'hacking')
My main problem is that my business partner, who connects through a pc here (who remained connected incidentally when I first lost the connection) and continued to be able to connect until I did the hard reset. Now I can't connect that pc to the airport extreme. It sees it but gives an error message saying it's out of range and refresh the list when I try to connect. I fiddled about for hours. I've forgotten how the pc was set up in the first place and I'm going nuts. Can anyone help.
    Thanks
    Helen

Disappointed not to see any help on this one.
If it helps anyone out there to help me, I just uploaded the Airport Utility Software to the pc, typed in base station ID and password. Error message, check network connections. No help.
Try to connect the pc again the usual way from the list of available networks, it asks for password, I use it, then it says it needs to be 5 or 10 ASCII characters or 20 hexadecimal.
What I don't understand is that everything was working fine on both machines until two weeks ago when my base station went into spasm, dropped me but happy with pc, when I did the hard reset, keeps me, won't allow pc to connect.
I just don't know what to do now. Of course I suppose I could always make a call and pay £35 to have an apple technician tell me why their hardware suddenly screwed up for no apparent reason.
    Seriously frustrated

  • MAC MINI- Airport Connection cutting out regularly

MAC MINI- 10.4.11 1.5GHz intel core solo
My mac (above) keeps losing airport connection (to my BT homehub router-which is newish)- Has been running fine for years-changed my router-was still running fine for a few weeks AND NOW....keeps cutting out wireless signal for no reason. I have other macs/comps on same signal (nearer router also!) which are unaffected-only mac mini is... I have tried everything I can think of and been on forums etc all day...
Cuts out-won't recognise my router- then after a restart it sometimes comes back on-sometimes just comes back on itself after an hour or so also.... When its on, the signal gradually loses strength till it gets to zero-then disconnects and won't recognise any wireless devices (it usually lists a few that are in my building)....SO- router is OK as other comps are fine- it must be mac mini fault- have had no software updates recently either-so really don't know what to do next! help!

    Hi,
thanks for your reply-I have tried every channel possible (before posting my first post)- but like I say -it connects fine at first (sometimes-especially if comp has been shut down overnight)-then after about 15-30 mins the bars start dropping and then it goes and won't come back on... I know it is not the router as my other mac (which is further away from router and also is a much older computer) has never had any problems like this before and doesn't have any while the mini is disconnecting..
I have tried everything I can think of and have spent hours and hours reading through other similar posts- but can't find anything that works....
If the mini macs have a weak antenna then why has it been ok in connecting since I bought it (was one of the first mini's to come out) ? Do you think it gets weaker with age? Why is it ok for a bit then disconnects, then is ok, then is not etc etc ??
Thanks for your help anyway-any other suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am about to throw it out the window!!cheers.

  • AirPort connection cuts out with heavy disk traffic

My AirPort connection often cuts out when there's heavy demand on the connected USB drive.
Is there some way of avoiding this?

My AEBS (802.11n, non-Gigabit version) does the same thing: drops the disk connection during a large file transfer from time to time. Makes the AirDisk problematic for backups.
    The AEBS is at 7.2.1
    My PowerBook is at 10.4.10

  • Airport extreme drop out Testra

Hi - I'm new to this. My iMac G5(intel core duo) uses an airport extreme to access the internet. No probs until I want to make a phone call out whilst on the net - after a short while the airport symbol fades & the internet connections drops out. This only happens on outgoing phone calls, not incoming. Any ideas/help will be very much appreciated. The only other computer joined to this network is a Mac Pro intel core duo.

gulchy, Welcome to the discussion area!
    My iMac G5(intel core duo)...
There is no such thing. You either have an iMac G5 OR an iMac Intel Core Duo.
Are you using a cordless phone? Does it operate at 2.4 GHz? It is causing wireless interference with the wireless network created by the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The best solution is to replace the phone with one that does NOT operate at 2.4 GHz. If you can't do that, try changing the channel used by the AEBS until you find a channel that works or you run out of channels.

  • Airport extreme drops out on imac, but not on powerbook....

    Hi
    Here's what i have running.
A 4 year old powerbook which always connects just fine to the internet, with no dropping of the signal.
A new imac with a airport extreme built in. It regularly just drops the internet connection, even though the internet is seen perfectly by the other machine.
Router is a standard netgear router virgin media provide.
Periodically, and some days it will be totally fine, but mostly on the weekends (like now) the signal on the imac just drops out (from perfect 4 bars, to none) and i lose access to the internet on this machine (very annoying when you are trying to talk to someone on skype!). after some time it reappears, only to drop out again.
I have reset the modem to automatically select a wireless channel, but that seems to have done nothing. So following the advise on other chats here, i set the channel to 10. However the problem remains. I thought, well, maybe its the wireless phone, or the microwave, but these do not seem to affect the internet connection to the powerbook g4. The software updater for the "airport utility" claims it is up to date.
And now i am totally lost as to what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have this very same issue. Reproducable on 2 laptops (ibook and powerbook), both 10.4.3, to 2 separate ftp servers.
    Transmit fails as well.
Fetch, however, seems to work just fine. Does Fetch not use the underlying ftp command line app?
Transferring small files (under 1k) seems to work though.
The message I get is as follows:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
Timesout for 10-20 seconds, then I get the message. Setting the transfer mode to "binary" manually seems to correct the issue. But this won't work for what I'm doing (Dreamweaver, which must use the command line ftp?).
Attempting to ftp the same files from my local Solaris and Linux servers seems to work just fine.
    sftp works.
    Apple? Is ftp broken?

  • Airport Extreme Drop Outs -  Best Firmware/set-up  options for mixed Airport Devices

I have an Airport Extreme (4th Gen) that I have connected to a Comcast modem.  I use this devise as a primary base station for my wireless network, and route an Ethernet cable from this Extreme to a D-Link 24 port switch.  The D-link is then connected to the various ports around my house via Cat5.
Recently, I have been having trouble with my Internet connection dropping out periodically (not just wireless, but the Internet as well).  Had comcast out and all look good with the lines, signal, etc.  When I connect a computer directly to the Comcast modem (i.e. bypassing the Extreme), no drop outs.  So, I figured it was the Extreme (or potentially the D-Link, but feels more like the Extreme) so I bough a new Extreme (but have not installed yet).
I have read in some of the forums that the firmware update on the Airport Extreme may be the culprit, but after downgrading, the issue still remains. I have a couple of Airpirt Expresses as well, of mixed Generations.
    2 questions:
1 - My buddy seemed to recall a site or page that showed the best Airport firmware options for a mixed generation Airport network.  I can't find it anywhere. Anyone know if this exists or where I might find something like this.
2 - I am currently extending the network wirelessly, but also have that extender plugged in via Ethernet for faster speed when I want to connect via Ethernet.  Could this be causing issue.  I am now thinking I should have set the express up as a bridge (i.e. roaming network) rather than extender, and will do that when I install the new Extreme.  Could having the Express set up the way I currently do (wirelessly extending network AND connected via Ethernet) causing the issue (it has worked fine for the longest time, but maybe the new firmware doesn't like that).  I am not really that good with network stuff, so may be that's just a snipe hunt.
FWIW - I also just bought a brand new IMAC with Mavericks that is now on the network (via Ethernet). I mention this only because I feel like people have also mentioned connectivity issues with Mavericks.
    Any help would be appreicated.

First just install the new extreme to see if dropouts go away
For the express, it should be setup to extend via wired (not wirelessly); power it off for now and just make sure the new extreme isn't suffering from dropouts
Then factory reset the express so that it can be a wired extender, don't worry, it will also provide a wifi signal with the same credentials as your main extreme

  • Airport Extreme Flaking Out: 50 d/c's a Day

We had a power out a few weeks ago and the extreme ran off the battery until it ran out. Since then, it is SUPER flakey. We get cutoff 50x/day, and it just comes right back up again a minute or two later. Is this just a boat anchor at this point?
I was waiting because I heard a new one was coming but now it's out it's apparently the same.. ?
    Thanks.

So I ended up replacing the Airport Extreme and that did not solve the problem. After a month or so of torture, I tried turning off the wireless. That fixed it. Apparently, the DHCP software in the extreme is kind of dumb and all the devices coming on and off the network were confusing it. We were seeing messages like 'another device has the same IP address.' So there is no real solution I guess. Seems strange that something this fundamental is so broken.

  • Airport Express Cutting Out

    Hello...
I've had my AX working for months just fine. I've been through firmware upgrades without a problem. But last week the airport started acting a little crazy. I'll be happily surfing the internet and all of the sudden all the bars will drop out and i'll lose my connection. Meanwhile the AX is still showing a green light. At first i suspected that it might have something to do with the latest OS upgrade and that it was just my computer, but my girl is having the same problem with her iBook which is still at 10.4.4.
I'm getting very frustrated because the only way that i can get it to work again is by unplugging it. Sometimes that will work for an hour or two, other times it will only work for 20 min before i have to play the unplug-replug game.
If any one has any thoughts i would really appreciate it.
    12" Powerbook 1 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Good news: my problem seems to be solved! My AirPort Express hasn't dropped the Internet connection for 1 1/2 weeks now, when it (and its AirPort predecessors) hadn't managed to go more than a day or two in the past few years.
The big change was a change in my DSL service. I subscribe to a DSL deal through my university that is co-run by Sprint. In the past, the DSL setup used a PPPoE connection and an Efficient Networks SpeedStream DSL modem. With this setup, as I've discussed earlier in this thread, the AirPort connection would be lost regularly (sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes up to a day or two) -- no Internet connection, no access to my USB printer that was plugged in to the AirPort, and it wouldn't work with any computer that I tried once it went down.
What changed was an upgrade in the DSL service that is offered by this Sprint-university deal, which is now supposedly "up to" 4-6 times faster than the old service. Instead of a PPPoE connection directly to the university, we now simply get a standard Sprint IP through DHCP, and login to the university's Cisco VPN when we need to access university-restricted materials. The new DSL modem is a "Sprint 660 series."
So it appears that the lost connections were not due to interference, as I had always believed; in the last 1 1/2 weeks the same sources of interference presumably have all still been around. Instead, the problem must have been due to one of three things:
    (1) the DSL connection itself (as offered by Sprint);
    (2) the DSL modem (the Efficient Networks SpeedStream;
    and/or (3) the PPPoE connection.
I don't know any of the technical details behind any of this, but my problem has been solved by some combination of Sprint's upgrade to faster service, the new DSL modem, and the removal of the PPPoE login. Hopefully this information will be helpful for others experiencing dropped connections, some of whom might have one or more of these things in common with my previous setup. (I doubt there is a single cause of problems, though, so I'm sure there will be others with frequent dropouts who don't have any of these details in common with me.)

  • Airport extreme timing out

I have a macbook pro 2.16ghz running mac os 10.5 and sometimes after using the wireless i sometimes get it kind of timing out and not responding. the router at home doesn't seem to be the one at fault as other computers connected wired seem to be fine.
also a simple reboot of my macbook pro seems to cure the problem but this is quite annoying
does anyone else encounter this or know a solution.?

closing as resolved - there was an update which solved, also have new machine now

  • Airport signal cutting out on internet?

    HI
Just changed over to a 20" intel imac from a white G5 imac and started getting an annoying little problem with airport signal.
The signal strength bar of the airport card on my mac, randomly will drop to one/two bars (normally i'm full signal) - when surfing on the net. The result of this is that pages will either fail to load or become REALLY slow loading. I can resolve the issue by turning off/on the airport from the menu bar - but this is become a pain and I wondered if anybody else had had this issue?
The mac is in the same position as the older one and this never had this issue - so I was wondering if this an intel Mac thing? I've tried Safari, Firefox and Camino and they all do it - so it's not the browser? Any suggestions.....

Well - I did a factory reset which seemed to work and I also increased "Strength robustness" in airport settings - so at the moment it may have solved that issue.....However now another issue has started - !
Whenever I put the iMac to sleep and wake it up the network is lost? The airport express settings are still all there - because my iphone can still use the airport, however the iMac cannot see it? I did select a closed network - could this be the problem? I allowed the airport to access my keychain - but could this be the issue? I also wondered if the issue is arrising from the fact that the new iMac is 'n' compatiable wireless card - yet the airport express is the older type (a,b & g only)? Anybody else had compatiability issues with this - I don't think you're meant to have issues with 'backwards' compatiability? Any offers..............

airport extreme n network with imac intel core duo (leopard) and imac g4 (tiger), both stream music to airport express. imac core duo streams well, but imac g4 with older 11g airport card cuts out every 20 seconds or so, and it's within 10' of express. all software updates done to computers and wireless devices, i think. what could be causing cut out?
any recommendations on how to reconfigure such a set up?

Does anyone out there sell an aftermarket version? I had heard that Belkin might offer one, but had not seen anything yet.

  • AirTunes CUTTING out periodically... Help?

I originally thought iTunes kept pausing but now I've realized the signal to the AirPort keeps cutting out. The song keeps playing in iTunes but the signal to the AirPort/AirTunes keeps going all jerky, cutting in and out with annoying frequency. Could my AirPort be dying? I've had it for 4+ years now. I just reset it and renamed the network, etc. I've also tried deleting the file in my preferences but to no avail. Is there anything else I can do?
    Spencer

Have you updated to iTunes 8?
I did and I've had many connection problems since then. It started with my AirTunes not working, then I tried all the suggestions here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1701084&tstart=0
Some solutions worked for a short time, now AirTunes won't work at all and when it was playing it was jittery, the volume control ceased to work (blared at me last time).
All day since I updated iTunes there's been nothing but problems. I'm leaving it off now so it doesn't interfere with my Wifi connections. I have an Airport Extreme and an Express, and a few times now both devices couldn't be found (it happened while I was playing my touchy AirTunes when it was working a little bit). As long as I don't play iTunes, everything else is peachy, with no disconnections from the internet or anything.
