Airport extreme default host won't stick

Hi all, I am using the newest version of the airport extreme and newest version of airport utility.  I have a mac mini server running on my LAN with a manually set IP address of 10.0.1.15.  I have my DHCP range on my airport set to start at 10.0.1.16-200.
I have tried to set the default host to 15 multiple times but it keeps resetting to 253.  I don't get what is happening here but it's a really big PITA.  I'd like to be able to access my server for things like VPN and screen sharing without having to manually set every individual service as well as dealing with the newest icloud port conflicts that the airport utilities report.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why this might be happening?

I am having the same issue on my airport extreme.  I am using software version 6.2 , I have slightly different IPs but the same scenario.
Very frustrating!!
Add to it the fact that I can no longer see the clients that are on my router from the router itself....

  • Airport Extreme and hosting on line games

I have a group of friends with whom I play games. I am usually the host. With my old linkys, I would use safari to go to the settings. go to the settings and set the computer I was using to host outside of the firewall. I just purchased an airport extreme--I have several computers at home, one of my children has a laptop and my children are getting the iPod touch for christmas--and needed wireless connectivity.
The problem is that I cannot figure out how to set my computer outside of the firewall for the purpose of hosting an online game. Can you help me?

Hello, I have run into similar problems, though I am hosting with an Xbox360. I have the older airport extreme base staion (round one) so things may have changed. I typed in "default host" in the airport help and this is what it said:
Setting up a default host on your network
If you want to play network games, you can set up a computer on your AirPort network as the default host. This computer will be exposed to the Internet and receive all inbound traffic.
To set up a computer as a default host:
Open AirPort Admin Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
Select your base station from the list and click Configure.
Click Base Station Options, then click WAN Ethernet Port.
Select "Enable Default Host at." The default IP address is 10.0.1.253. Assign this address to the host computer.
So hopefully this helps you out.

  • HT1218 Airport extreme 802.11n won't connect to internet

After returning from vacation, having shut down all power to electronic devices, I returned to have an issue with airport extreme. It appears to boot properly and diagnostics have it running through first 4 items until it hits internet. It remains red and won't connect. I am using a cable modem. I have reset the cable modem numerous times with and without airport connected. No change. I reset airport to default setting and created a new wifi network. Again, no change.  I also attempted a firmware update. "Error occurred while attempting firmware update" and it never could update. I have contacted cable provider and connection is good. Modem works properly using ethernet connection. I have been able to connect wirelessly to unprotected wifi connections, just not my own network, old or new. I am at a loss. Did my airport die?
    thanks,

a macrumors user walked me through an ethernet connected firmware update and I am back up running again. You have to connect the AE to the mac via ethernet then open airport utility, create or use an old network and update firmware. Shut down and reconnect AE to cable modem and restart. Firmware update solved my connectivity issue.

  • Airport Extreme default IP

Hi there, I just bought an Airport Extreme and it works on the default IP ending with 1, I mean, 10.0.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, etc, and I just wondering if I could change that IP. I need it to work with the IP ending with 254.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, you won't be able to change the default settings that you are referring to.

  • Airport Extreme "default password" error

After resetting Extreme, I cannot rectify the amber light error for "default password in use".
The password is not set to the default.
Have tried various new passwords, but after updating each time nothing changes.
All internet and wireless connections apper to be working 100% - it's just annoying the **** out of me..........

Open AirPort Utility 6.1, click on the AirPort Extreme icon, and click Edit in the window that appears
Click the Base Station tab at the top of the window
Edit out / backspace the Base Station Password and enter a new password. Write that down.
Do the same to Verify Password
Click Update at the lower right of the window and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart
You should have a green light, unless you still have other default settings that need to be changed.

  • AirPort Extreme (MC340AM/A) won't recognize USB hard drive

    Hi,
It was working fine (at least that's what I believe) to one point, and then all of a sudden, AirPort utility won't recognize my external HD connected to USB port of my AirPort.
Just to eliminate possible confusion... drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I had another one as well, sitting on my desk that's formatted as FAT32. Both of these drives were connecting fine to AirPort utility till last night. All of a sudden, absolutely nothing happens when I connect either one of these two and turn it on. AirPort Utility/Disks pane shows: NO DISKS FOUND.
I even replaced this USB cable just to eliminate this possibility, still nothing.
Could it be that my USB port just died? I have 14 days to return it and I'm on my second day, so I want to know before I run out of my return bonus.
    Thanks in advance!

OK, I just tried another external HD. This time it was LaCie 1Tb. As soon as I connected it, it was recognized by AirPort Extreme. What's puzzling is, that same thing happened with my SimpleTech 1Tb one last night. It was easily recognized by AE and then all of a sudden AE would never recognize it again.
At first, I though maybe these HDs are not supported by AE, but that's not the case. One is LaCie with Samsung HD103UJ drive inside purchased at Apple store, another one SimpleTech with WD inside, and other two are both super reliable Sygate HDs (never ever had any problems with them).
Hmm... I just disconnected LaCie one and tried SimpleTech one more time and it worked. AE can see it again. What's going on in here? Something is definitely not right.
Can't test this port through printer since I don't have one available at the moment.

  • My iMac can not see my mini Mac via Airport extreme using host name, only via IP address. What am I doing wrong ?

I have an iMac and a mini Mac attached to the same Airport extreme. It would appear that Bonjour works because I can see the hostname of the mini Mac server in Finder on the iMac.
But if I type in the host name (myminimac.private) in the Safari browser at the iMac it can not find the mini mac. However if I type in the IP address of the mini mac server it can see the see it.
It used to work but I must have done something to mess it up.
    Anybody any suggestions ?

You have the wrong card. You need the original AirPort card for your G4.
...how the **** do i get the Superdrive to open up so i can put in a CD/DVD?
If the keyboard has a media eject key, press that. If not, hold down F12.

  • Airport Extreme/Time Capsule won't connect to internet

When my 10-year old Linksys router died 10 days ago, I bought an Airport Extreme 802.11n. I installed it and got internet access (My operating system is Mountain Lion and I have Comcast Cable Internet). I could access a USB-connected hard drive, but couldn’t get Time Machine to work.  I was able to get my wireless printer to work when connected by USB to the Airport Extreme.
Then, a few days ago, Apple suddenly introduced the new Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac with built in 2 TB hard drive.  Since I could still return the previous Airport Extreme, I bought the 802.11ac, unplugged the previous version, and followed the directions to install the new 802.11ac.  I used the same network name, and – I thought – the same network password.  But I could not connect to the internet.  Kept saying that I did not have the right password – even though Keychain seems to confirm the password I used.
So, I unplugged the 802.11ac and plugged in the older 802.11n and that instantly restored internet access (my wife uses our network and needs internet access).
What to do? Probably return the 802.11ac. But does anyone have any thoughts on some sure-fire way to install the 802.11ac and get internet access? I see there is an app for installing via my iPad2.  Perhaps I could install it and set up a separate network/internet connection and then log on to that with our other devices?
I installed the 802.11ac using the Airport Utility in updated Mountain Lion (Version 10.8.4). The Apple “Software Update” on my Macbook says no updates available, but perhaps there is some separate updated Airport Utility I should use.  If so, where is it?  Would appreciate any help from someone familiar with the new 802.11ac.

I did the power recycle, as the airport utility recommended, several times.  Also, when I reconnected the earlier 802.11n, it locked onto the internet immediately.  So, the problem does not appear to have been with the cable modem or the internet provider.  It could have been with the router (Time Capsule) but I repowered it too.  Most likely I made some mistake with the configuration.  When I tried to log onto the internet, it said my password was incorrect.  But as I mentioned, keynote confirmed the password I was using.
When I switched from the 802.11n to the 802.11ac, I used the same network name and - I thought - the same password.  Perhaps I should have set up the network with a new name and password.  The Apple set-up instructions are pretty vague about the steps to take in switching from from a pre-existing network or changing network names and passwords.  Anyone have experience with this, which I assume would be the norm in most installations?

  • Airport Extreme Ethernet Port Won't Recognize DSL Connection

    Hey ya'll,
We had a big thunderstorm -- power in house stayed on but stupid AT&T DSL connection went down. When I got the connection back up, the Airport Extreme continued to give me blinking amber light saying the ethernet cable is not connected -- even when it is. Tried reconfiguring to no avail. Is my Ethernet port somehow fried? Is there something else to try? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated as having to be wired to the DSL is making me very cranky. Thanks!

  • Airport extreme utility update won't install

any reason why i can't install the latest version of airport extreme utility? i have installed it 3 times, and each time, when I go into my utilities folder, the old version of airport admin utility is there, with no update.

That doesn't make any sense unless you somehow got it in a different place than it normally downloads.
It should be under HD/Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility.
You can also try using finder to locate it.
I vaguely remember one other person having a similar problem but I think he caused his own problem and then could not correct.

  • Airport Extreme - IP Address won't show up

Okay, not too savvy on networking so bear with my inept relay of info. Worked through setting up the AEBS on my PC. Ran into a problem with the blinking amber light. Discovered which boxes to check to make it green. My system tray registers a positive connection but I cannot get on the internet. I believe the problem lies with not acquiring an IP address. Tech support was not particularly helpful as I am in Germany and the folks I spoke with were in the US. The Germans want .14 Euros cents per minute (last resort). There must be some combination of checked boxes and drop-down choices I'm not getting right.

Okay, it's fixed. Y'all are gonna get a good laugh out of this.
The little box I thought was a modem was actually just a splitter. In removing the Netgear router out of the picture, I also took away the modem functionality with it. Apparently, the Airport Extreme does NOT have modem capability. I had to call the phone company hotline to figure that out. So I went to the phone company's store and sweet-talked a modem out of them by trading in my unreliable Netgear router, and - whattya know - the Airport Extreme works! And very well I might add. Also added my PC without any problems.

  • Airport Express:  port forwarding won't "stick"

I have a new Airport Express, and use Airport Utility 6.1 to configure it.  It works fine, but I can't get port forwarding settings to "stick".  I set them (Public TCP Ports and Private TCP Ports) both to 4282 for a particular computer (that has a DCHP reservation), Save and Update, but port forwarding doesn't work and when I come back to check my work, both port settings are blank again!  Thoughts?
    Before:
    After:

It's finally working!  I changed quite a few things, including getting a different cable modem from Comcast (a Cisco - and apparently all but one Comcast device do NOT include routers), but what made the difference is reading an Apple wireless manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf).  Following its (subtle) advice, I:
Changed the Airport's DHCP range to 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200.
Moved my Unix box's IP back to 10.0.1.202 (a printer has 10.0.1.201), and removed the DHCP reservation for it.
Made related changes on my Unix box and Mac (/etc/hosts, etc.) using Webmin, etc.
Created my "custom" port forwarding by using "Personal Web Service", changing the ports to 4280 and 4282.
From the beginning I didn't know if my Unix box's IP should be inside the DHCP range with a DHCP reservation, or outside it without one.  Now it is clear that the latter is correct - I should have gone with my gut feeling.  Why it makes such a difference, I don't know, and I don't know if the .200 cutoff for DHCP is an Apple convention or part of a standard.
    Halleluiah!

  • Changing Open With Default App Won't Stick...

I have a couple of versions of the same app installed and I need the older version of the app to be the default app that globally opens whenever I double-click one of its files.
I've tried the Get Info -> Open With -> Select App ->Change All procedure but after clicking the Change All button, it immediately reverts back to the newer version of the application.
I need to be able to support both versions of the app. I've tried downloading RCDefaultApp but that didn't help. Moving the newer version app to another partition is not option. Re-installing the newer version of the app onto another partition is not an option either.
I would be grateful for any suggestions
    Thanks,
    Jon

The two Get Info options seem to use different methods to select the application. The 'Open with:' changes the Finder's default application property, but it looks like the 'Change All…' button uses the file type identifier to find the default application. Since the file type identifier is usually the same for all versions, the latest version is apparently the one that gets used. You should be able to select the older version on a file-by-file basis, or use the file inspector to change multiple documents. An AppleScript could also be used, perhaps a folder action to change the default application for files dropped into a folder.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 Airport Extreme Yahoo hosting issue

I keep getting DW error messages when trying to upload any file over 1MB since adding AE to my workflow. I can upload small files such as 18k image files all day, but if I try to upload a pdf or .mov for a client, I get an error message at the end of the upload. The message says DW didn't get a response from the server... will try to upload file again. After the second attempt, I get a message saying the operation timed out. No response from server. I have been uploading to these accounts for several years without a hitch until now.
This error is happening with several yahoo hosted accounts.

    UPDATE:
Deleting the DW pref file fixed in ...User/Library/Preferences/ fixed the problem.

  • When attempting to print with HP P2015 cabled to AirPort Extreme, error message is "Network host (name) is busy".  What's happening?

When attempting to print with an HP P2015 cabled to an AirPort Extreme, the network won't connect to printer.  The Print Que message is "Network host (name) is busy; will retry in (number) seconds."  When I delete the file to be printed, the Print Queue screen says "Printer Ready".
    More Information:
The printer's Queue Name is Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet P2015 Series
The Location is "(my name) AirPort Extreme"
URL is "Hewlett_Packard%20%HP%20LaserJet%20P2015%20Series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local./ ?bidi" (for whatever that means)
    Driver Version is 18.4
Printer Software is HP LaserJet P2015 Series
The printer is listed as a printer on System Preferences/Print&Fax screen
If I connect the printer cable directly to the iMac, the printer works fine.
Any helpful directions would be greatly appreciated.

I came across an Apple article last modified 6/2/08 (Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule).  It suggested the old standby, i.e., disconnect the AirPort Extreme Base Station from its power source, turn off the printer, turn on the printer, and reconnect the AirPort to its power source.  It worked.  I guess disconnecting the AirPort cleared out the network host.  Yea.
