Airport Extreme Detecting 169 IP Address

Like others, my Airport Extreme was working fine and suddenly I began have problems. I am trying to connect to the Apple TV and an error message indicates that the connection has failed because it cannot connect to the internet. The summary screen on the Airport Utility indicates that my IP address begins in 169, which I think is a bad IP address. Any ideas on how to go about fixing this problem? Thanks for any help that you might be able to provide.

I have exactly the same problem, OP 169 --- a dud since upgrades occured. HELP.
Thanks v much. pb

  • Airport Extreme getting 169.x.x.x address

I have cable internet. After an internet ouage, my Airport Extreme is getting an IP address of 169.254.x.x and my Mac connected to the Airport Extreme has the IP address 75.25.4.5 (a IP address owned by my cable internet provider).
It should be the other way around, my Airport Extreme should be getting the 75.25.4.5 address and the G5 which is set to DHCP getting a 192.168.1.x address.
What's the best way to get the Airport Extreme to pickup the IP address from the cable provider? Just restart the Airport Extreme? Or turn off the airport extreme, power cycle the cable modem, then turn on the airport extreme, then turn on my G5.
In 'Airport Utility" under the "Internet" tab I have 'Connection Sharing: set to Off (bridge Mode).
I forget if this is what it should be set to? Before, the my G5 was set to get it's address via DHCP...and I guess I had the Airport Extreme set to distribute IP addresses. Maybe I need to change that setting to "Distribute a range of IP addresses"??
    Thanks

What's the best way to get the Airport Extreme to pickup the IP address from the cable provider?
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
In 'Airport Utility" under the "Internet" tab I have 'Connection Sharing: set to Off (bridge Mode).
If you have the AEBSn connected directly to your cable modem, then Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address.

  • Airport extreme loses valid IP address 4 - 5 times a day.

I have a D-link 300T modem connected to the WAN port of my AEBS. I get frequent disconnections even though the ethernet is still connected to the internet.
In Airport Utility, I notice the IP address gets lost and becomes a self-assigned 169.xx.xx.xx number rather than the valid 91.xx.xx.xx number. This is when I cannot connect. Prior to this happening, my internet browsing is as slow as a snail and I know when I am about to be disconnected.
I've reset ny AEBS, cleared the Aiport preferences, used manual DHCP configuration, done combo updates, deleted the airport and ethernet entries in system preferences, changed radio channels, switched off IPV6 etc. Don't know what else to do. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Power off\on Sequence
1, Power off Comcast Modem. Remove Battery back up, if it has one. Disconnect the coax cable.
    2. Power off Airport Extreme
    3. Let both sit for 3 minutes.
    4. Reconnect coax cable to Comcast modem and replace battery and power up.
    5. Wait a minute or two to make sure the Comcast modem is completely up and then Power on the Airport Extreme.

Freyfisher: I had the same problem whenn I switched to the Airport Extreme yesterday.  Here is what I did:
1:  uplugged modem for 30 sec. and detached all ethernet cables.  Plugged back in and reattached airport extreme cable after all lights were solid on the modem. Then, I went into Airport Utility and selected, "Base Station"> "restore default settings".  Then" Base Station"> Restart.  Then go through setup assistant again.  If no luck, try setting IPv4 to 10.0.1.2, subnet to 255.255.255.0, router to 10.0.1.1. IPv6 set to OFF if having trouble.  DNS adresses: 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76, search domain hsd1.ST.comcast.net where "ST" is your two-letter State abbrev.  Hope this helps someone....

  • IMac on Netgear X104 and Airport Extreme intermittently loses IP address

We have a Netgear X104 plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Another X104 (which carries network information through the household electrical wiring) is plugged in for a networked iMac with OS X v 10.5.4.
The network works flawlessly, but every few days, the iMac loses its IP address. All lights are working properly on the X104, indicating that it is seeing the network.
The only workaround on the iMac is to go to: System Preferences/Network/Advanced and click RENEW DHCP LEASE. The iMac then gets reassigned a new IP, such as 10.0.0.200 by the Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme, settings are as follows.
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Wireless security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address: Provided automatically
Powering off and on the Airport Extreme and the Cable Modem have not fixed this recurrent problem.

  • How do I set up my AirPort Extreme  to provide IP addresses without being connected to the Internet?

II'm trying to set up my AirPort Extreme in the field without an Internet connection so that devises can communicate wirelessly but there aren't any IP addresses being generated

Just run the AE in router mode.. if you have difficult with the setup do it completely manually..
This is how I do it.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
As long as the AE is running in DHCP and NAT mode it will produce IP addresses.. however you cannot turn off WAN.
You could give it a static IP .. so set to static instead of dhcp if you like.. eg.
DNS and WAN errors.. double NAT, Ethernet unplugged, etc.. so it makes no real difference..
The AE will function fine as router (Wireless AP) to your network however..
    Just ignore all the errors.

  • Airport Extreme w/ static IP address issue

I'm using a westell 7501 in front of my airport extreme to connect to our ISP. Our static IP from the ISP worked great until our Mountain Lion server upgrade. Something has changed and I can't seem to troubleshoot it.
I've returned everything to factory defaults and started from scratch, but still I am unable to get the westell to pass on the communication to the Airport, so we can connect to our internal network when offsite. DNS settings on Server are correct and report back fine through testing.
When I check the IP it returns the address of the westell. Any ideas on how I can get this communication chain back to the Airport? Previously, if I checked the IP it would return our static IP and I'm at a loss on this one, however I am not a networking specialist either.

  • Airport Extreme not getting IP address

I've recently moved, but stayed with Verizon and their DSL service. When I plugged in my modem and Airport Extreme at my new house I couldn't get an IP address or other internet connection. My G5 connects with the modem easily via ethernet (hence my post here), but not my Extreme. I've done the whole pull the plugs for five minutes routine several times as well as dowgraded the Extreme firmware to 5.5.1 and then back to 5.6 again with neither working. I tried using my Airport Express in the same capacity and it fails as well.
Any ideas? Everything worked flawlessly in the past as you would expect from Apple products.

The service is identical in every respect. I'm using the same modem since this is considered a transfer account they wouldn't send a new one unless I wanted to be charged more money. The connection still uses DHCP and the account name and password are the same (although I can't really remember ever needing them).
I just spoke with Verizon and they recommended I unhook the modem for eight hours to allow the Verizon equipment to recycle and perhaps that will solve the problem. I'll keep you posted unless you have another suggestion before then.
    Thanks!

  • Airport Extreme self assigning IP address

    Please help me!!
I'm having sudden problems with my connection via the Airport extreme. The Icon in the top bar shows that the MBP is connected 2 the specified network, however, when I try to browse with Safari or Firefox, I get a message saying I'm not connected to the internet. This has happened while trying to connect to 2 different networks.
I have noticed that the Airport is self assigning an IP address. I'm not an expert, but I thought the IP was assigned by the ISP.
I have read a few other posts on here and followed the advice posted.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
One piece of advice has offered me a temporary fix. I placed the 'System Configuration' folder on my desktop and restarted the MBP. This allows me about 24hrs grace, however if I try to connect to a different network, I have the same problem crop up.
The mac is about 18 months old and has worked like a dream up until a couple of days ago!
If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be most grateful!
    Thanks in advance.

The message about a self assigned IP address is a fancy way of saying that your Internet connection is not working correctly.
When something like this happens, the first troubleshooting step that you should take as a complete network power cycle as follows:
Power off everything on your network....all devices....order is not important
    Wait a moment or two
Start the modem first and let run run for a moment by itself
Then start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time until everything is powered back up
    Check for proper operation

  • HT4145 Airport Extreme no valid IP address, no DNS addresses

I have Uverse. I've disabled the wireless feature of the gateway and wired into my airport. I've created a network, and I have all my deviced connected to it. Everything was working fine. • Setting up AirPort Extreme, share public ip address

    Hi there.
I have a problem with my AirPort Extreme, which is an older model (serial: 6F7040BGVYS, Version: 7.6.3)
It's connected to my Netgear router, and it works fine. BUT when another user goes on my wifi connection, the speed goes down seriously!
I contacted my internet provider, and they told me that it was a setting in the AirPort - something about sharing public ip address..? Changing Network > Router Mode from Off (Bridge Mode) to DHCP only. When I type in the DHCP Range, it will not accept, see alert below. I tried many different, so there must be somewhere else to configure..?
    Invalid Value
Sharing a range of IP addresses using DHCP Only requires manually configuring your WAN IP address. If your ISP gives you a range of static IP addresses, you should manually configure your base station with the first IP address and distribute the rest via DHCP.
How do I setup my AirPort to share public ip?
Attached photo shows the AirPort Utility, and version.
Hope someone knows about this issue
    Have a nice weekend!
    Best from Jeppe

    Hi..
    I have this same question.
Yes i did change all those and have tried with all the possible settings.
Still the problem persists..It shows all the configuration and all is right and still it is not connecting to internet.
Cross checked with the ISP, Tried same configuration in the mac machine(It's working) everything else seems to be fine but only the Airport is not connecting to the Internet.
Any solution or clarification will be appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • AirPort Extreme and Fixed IP Address

    Hi,
We've recently moved into a new apartment with pre wired internet - we basically connect via a Cat 5 port in the wall. Our ISP has provided us with fixed IP address, subnet mask, DNS information etc and this works fine when we directly connect via a cat 5 cable to the port, but as soon as we hook up the airport to the port in the wall and try to go wireless - we get no internet. We've used the airport set up facility and entered all of the data that we have, but we get nothing. The only information that we are not sure of is the router address - is this the address that the airport uses or is it a value that we need to get from our ISP? Thanks in advance

Try setting the Router Address as the IP address you are given except change the last number to a 1. For example, if the fixed IP address you are given is 74.63.128.33, try using the router address as 74.63.128.1 (this is how all my router addresses are given when using DHCP). If that doesn't work, call your ISP and ask what the router address.
As a note though, once you setup your AirPort for your static IP address you want to change the settings on your computer to use DHCP instead of that static IP address. The reason being is that the AirPort now is assigned that address and it is the AirPort's responsibility to assign private IP address to all computers on the network (basically all your computers on your AirPort are sharing that one IP address). That's not to say you can't use static IP addresses but if you are using the generic Apple setup your IP addresses would be something like 10.0.1.100. Unless you need to enable port forwarding I'd suggest just letting the AirPort act as your private DHCP server, and in order to do that you must make sure your computes are set to Configure IPv4 using DHCP instead of manually.

  • Airport Extreme has wrong IP address.

I bought a new AEBSn and tried to hook it up to my cable modem. Every time (even after resets) I get the amber flashing lights. I looked into the Airport Utility and it says I have an invalid IP address. The IP address being assigned to the AEBSn is something like 169.__________. When I directly plug in my modem to my computer, the internet works and I get a 76.__________ IP address.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Do you have Comcast as your ISP by any chance? I have been experiencing some problems with my AEBSn and comcast as well. I've read in some other threads that there is something about Airport wireless routers and Comcast dynamic DHCP. Comcast will tell you that it's not their problem because if you can connect to the internet by plugging your computer directly into your cable modem using an ethernet connection, then it's not the modem. Apple will tell you it's your ISP not giving your wireless router a good IP. after countless hours of being on the phone with Apple and Comcast and rebooting my modem and AEBSn several different times and ways, someone at Comcast FINALLY told me to do something that worked. Here's what I did. Maybe it'll work for you:
With my computer on, the AEBSn on, and the cable modem on, First, Unplug your cable modem. Wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in and wait for the lights to come back on (not sure what kind of modem you have, but there will be a couple of lights that should come on and be steady and at least one light that will come on and flicker a bit).
Next, unplug your AEBS and leave it unplugged,
    Next, restart your computer.
Next, plug the AEBS back in WHILE your computer is starting up. Don't wait for it to completely start up. (I plugged mine back in right after I heard the "bong" sound when my Mac was starting back up.)
That worked for me at least.
your IP address on your AEBS will still seem like it's not right but at least it works (hopefully).
    Good Luck!

  • Airport Extreme LAN address limitations

On our branch office networks, we use different subnets from the 10.x.x.x private networking address space. Most begin with 10.1 or 10.10.
But so far as we can tell, Apple, unlike every single other low-end router vendor, has arbitrarily decided that the AirPort Extreme shall only provide addresses that begin with 10.0.

We are aware of those other ranges, but that does not resolve the problem that a horribly arbitrary limitation that Apple ALONE has imposed on the use of the 10.x.x.x address space is a PROBLEM.
    We would have to
    1. renumber every last network from scratch to accommodate a limitation that ONLY APPLE imposes.
    2. Turn off the router functionality in the AirPort Extreme, dumbing it down into a mere wireless access point.
    3. Send the AirPort Extreme back to the supplier.
We have opted for #3-- just send this stupid thing back and never order one again until we can confirm that Apple has corrected these silly design flaws.

Where do i find the MAC address on my Airport Extreme?

Your AirPort Extreme has two MAC addresses, one for Wi-Fi, which is called the AirPort ID and another for the wired connection, called the Ethernet ID
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

  • Set up DynDNS access through existing network with new Airport Extreme

    Hey everyone!
I just can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong here...
I am working with an office network which was initially set up with a Linksys router and a separate Linksys hub connecting two Macs and a network printer in one particular room. We added several new iMacs and for ease of connectivity, decided to add a new Airport Extreme base as one of the new iMacs is acting as a server for a database the other new wireless iMacs connect to. Also, all the machines need access to the connected network printers connected in various parts of the office.
What we have now is the original Linksys router -> Linksys hub -> Airport Extreme. Everything seems to be working fine this way but I do believe that both the Linksys router AND the Airport Extreme are distributing IP addresses, which I'm thinking, could be the problem. I set up a DnyDNS account just fine, assigned port # 8080 on the server iMac and also opened port 8080 on both the Linksys and Airport Extreme. I still cannot get through to the server via DynDNS however.
I am wondering if I should turn off IP distribution on the Airport Extreme and let the Linksys router handle all that? The software that the other wireless iMacs run to access the database on the server depends on the server IP address too, so will this need to be changed if the Linksys is handling IP addressing? How does the hub affect any of this... does it change or interfere with the addressing in any way?
Thank in advance for any ideas or suggestions!
