Airport Extreme disconnecting 2-4 times a day

I have a DSL 300-T ADSL Modem (not a router) bought from the Apple shop connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS). I live in the UK and am using a PPOA connection with Orange Broadband.
Unfortunately, there are frequent disconnections (probably at least 3 times a day). During all these times, the modem is connected to the internet, but the AEBS either remains green showing no problems even though it has self-assigned a private IP address for itself (169.xx.xx.x). At other times, the AEBS blinks amber and says ethernet unplugged when it isn't.To make matters worse, the Base station then cannot reconnect because it cannot scan it, even though it's 2 feet away from my MacBook. Ironically it scans for networks outside my house before mine!
I've tried many 'solutions' from the Apple Discussions pages but none has worked for me.
It's a curious problem, but it's very annoying not having a reliable AEBS connection. I was hoping the issue would have been resolved in Snow Leopard but the issue remains.

About 10 days ago I purchased a 15" MBP for my wife as an early Birthday and Christmas present.
Since that time we have experienced problems very similar to what other people are posting. Internet works fine but suddenly we lose connection to the Airport Extreme. All I have to do is unplug the Airport Extreme and wait 10-30 sec, re-plug and we are up and running again.
I have tried the power down everything from the cable (Time Warner) modem to the computer and restart. Still, get network shutdowns every 30 min to 4 hours. Very frustrating.
Currently we have 3 apple laptops, 2 iMacs, 2 Windows XP laptops and two video consoles that utilize the network.
Where should I read for the best information on changing my airport extreme network to a 192.168.1.x set-up? Honestly does not sound like fun but looks like I might need to do it.
Thanks,
Paul in KC

  • Home Fusion disconnecting dozens of times per day.  Is there a fix?

As of a approximately a month ago, my Home Fusion systems disconnects dozens of times per day.  I'm not exaggerating!  I have logs to prove it.  There's a 50-50 chance it will reconnect on it's own after a few minutes.  Then again there's also a 50-50 chance it will not reconnect, at which point I have to (pick one):
         a) reboot the cantenna from the router pages;
         b) unplug the cantenna and plug it back in;
         c) unplug the cantenna and the router, wait 30 seconds, plug in the cantenna, wait 30 seconds, plug in the router.  (This was recommended by tech support on the phone as the best way to get back the connection);
          d) reset the cantenna to the factory settings;
         e) reset the router to the factory settings.
None of these makes any difference.  I have to do one of the above at least 12 times a day.  There are many more times when it disconnects, then reconnects on it's own.  The system will usually reconnect after 5 minutes, sometimes not. I've had multiple phone calls to tech support, only to hear the same thing, do one of the above.  A few times a day the system will reconnect after doing one of the above, only to disconnect again after 3-5 minutes.  It is bad all hours of the day, but worst in the late afternoons, evenings, and night.   This is absolutely horrid.
It's not my computers either.  The 'diagnostics' for the router and cantenna (which allow you to ping addresses) fail as well when the system isn't working.
My wife and I both work from home, both engineers.  I need a stable connection to work.  My kids have online homework (worksheets, drills, etc) most nights.  How do you deal with a elementary schooler in tears because he can't finish his homework because the connection goes down three times in a half hour while he's trying to get a target math drill score?
One support tech told me a fix would be coming out by the end of February, or early March.  That's weeks away!  Very stressful.  Another told me there was a firmware fix, but it's being rolled out incrementally.  Can't Verizon get that to those who are affected most?  Can we roll back to an earlier version of the cantenna firmware that was stable?  I was told no.

I have the same problem. My Home Fusion set up works great sometimes and then other times, nothing. I can usually reboot the cantenna and router (usually have to do a few times) to get everything working. Usually have to do this 2-3 times a week (sometimes more.)
    My Method:
    1. Sign into router (192.168.1.1)
    2. Go to the Advanced tab
    3. Reboot the cantenna (HBA)
    4. Wait 1 minute
    5. Reboot the router (HBR)
    6. Take a walk, fingers crossed
    7. Test to see if system working
    8. If not working, repeat these steps (may take 3-4 tries!)
Good luck and let me know if this works for you!

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:
Controlling access to your wireless network
A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

I will have an AirPort Extreme 5th gen in a few days. I have an older model and when playing with settings, I found out that my Epson wireless printer can only see 2.4 ghz 802.11n networks.....
but I want to use the 5Ghz wireless.....is there anyway to bridge the 2 networks or connect to both for AirPrint's sake?
    Any suggestions?

but I want to use the 5Ghz wireless.....is there anyway to bridge the 2 networks or connect to both for AirPrint's sake?
If the printer can only support the 2.4 GHz radio band then, even if you could bridge the two (not possible), the printer would still not be able to connect ... and this is true for any wireless client whether it is a printer, computer, etc.
Wireless clients that support both bands can connect to one or the other typically based on received signal strength. They don't connect to both simultaneously.

  • Airport extreme usb file create times

I have a USB network drive on my Airport Extreme.  I'm using an offline backup sevice (iDrive) to back this up.  I'm occassionally get a 1 hour (exactly) time differential between the backed up file on iDrive and the file on my USB drive.  This causes iDrive to backup thousands of files again (unecessarily).  I've seen this behavior with another backup program that used my usb network drive.  If I do a simple test - create a desktop file and then copy to the network drive, the times are correct.  Something is causing a time shift of 1 hour on my Airport or USB Drive.  Any ideas?

Airport utility 6.1 doesn't seem to have that option.
That is why I suggested that you might want to install AirPort Utility 5.6 to pick up the ability to manually adjust the time on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple dropped this feature in AirPort Utility 6.x.
and I don't know where the Airport Extreme get's its time settings.
As I previously stated in the last post.....The AirPort Extreme picks up its time cues from AirPort Utility on the Mac or PC that was used to configure the device. All you can do in this regard is check to make sure that your Mac or PC has the correct time.....(assuming that you are using AirPort Utility 6.1)
AirPort Utility 5.6 allows you to configure the time settings on the AirPort Extreme separately....so the settings are stored on the AirPort Extreme... but I cannot say whether this might help or solve your issue.

  • AirPort losing WIFI connection multiple times a day.

My AirPort keeps losing connection mulitple times a day. The only way to get it back is it turn AirPort off and back on. My HP is not losing connection, so I know its not my router signal. Help!

Sorry, I do not remember much about AirPort Utility in Tiger (10.4.11).
It might be called AirPort Admin Utility on Tiger. Look around in the Utilities folder or Applications folder to see if you can find it or something similarly named.
Should be more info and help about the update.....which is called 6.3.....in this Apple support document:
AirPort Express Firmware Update 6.3 for Mac OS X - Support - Apple
Finally, I was not kidding when I said that firmware updates on older devices will sometimes cause them to fail. Proceed at your own risk.

  • Airport Extreme set up with Time Warner

OK. I am experiencing a similar problem as mentioned in a differnt thread, but a bit different. First my Airport Utlility is 6.3.1 so the graphics for settings are completely different.  I have an ATV2, Black Mccbook and Ipad2. My problem is when I try to add a third device of the three, especially the Macbook, once I get it an assigned # via the modem (using a White, new Surfboard 6141 and Time Warner as provider), my Ipad gets dropped. Once I even lost the ATV2.  The Mccbook is generating its own DHCP address. When I have it on and reboot the modem, it sets it up , but then I lose the Ipad when I turn it back on. My apple extreme in set in Bridge,(by default it is a 2007 model.Has never been a problem when I used Verizon.Where do I go from here. Been playing with this all day.  Internet connect is set fort DHCP . Network is set for Bridge. I have no Ivp6 settings.

Also, I was not given instructions for set up from Time Warner. It was done via a phone call by the technician when they installed the cable. Timw Warner takes no responsibility for owned Routers and how to configure them. They just make sure the modem is probperly feeding the signal. Message was edited by: Moncrief

This is a simple cable modem, that will deliver only one IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
My apple extreme in set in Bridge,(by default it is a 2007 model. Has never been a problem when I used Verizon.
Bridge Mode is not the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme. It needs to be in a Router Mode of DHCP and NAT.
Bridge Mode would have been the correct setting with a Verizon modem/router......but the SB6141 is not a router....it is a simple modem.
You can try to make the settings change to see if that will work, but in most cases when you are making a modem change on a network, it is recommended to first reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings  (to wipe older and possibly conflicting settings), and then configure the AirPort to work with the new modem.

  • My Airport Extreme Disconnects From the Cable MoDem Every Few Minutes

    Hello,
I start a new topic as my previous title was wrong and there was no suitable answer.
I have had an Airport Extreme for 3 years and it sometimes disconnects after a few minutes. Actually, it more looks like that the Airport crashes: the "PC Link" light on the cable modem goes off, the Airport lights go off and I cannot find my Airport Network any more on my computer.
When this happens, I can either unplug it from the power and plug it back in, or simply move the Airport around a little bit, and it will re-start. Sometimes the problem does not re-occur for a few hours or days, sometimes it keeps happening every few minutes and of course drives me crazy...
    Is it because ... :
    - ... my Airport has a faulty connection and I should replace it?
    - ... there are power surges in my electricity installation (eg this seems to happen when I or my neighbors have air conditioners on, I live in one of those old New York buildings with old electricity installations), and I should get an anti-surge device, or a newer Airport would deal with this better?
    - ... of something else? I tried replacing the Ethernet cable between the MoDem and the Airport and it failed, there does not seem to be a source of interference around my place.
    Thanks for your help!

I have had similar problems. Not as bad as some of you but usually in the morning I discover that I have dropped onto someone elses wireless they are not as fast. Then I have to troop upstairs, unplug the Extreme, replug it and then everything is allright until the next morning. But it is sporadic. It has run fine now for a few days. This problem has persisted now for a year. And yes I have tried resetting it.
Next month I plan on going to the big city and I am going to take my Extreme to one of Genius' at the Apple Store. I am curious if anybody else has tried that solution and how much it might cost.

  • Airport Extreme 6th generation and Time Warner, Arris modem - no internet on mac

After installing a new Time Warner Arris modem we have encountered the following issues:
Light is green on the airport and everything appears normal
Wifi only works on iPhones, roku, and windows laptops.
Ethernet from airport extreme is also working (xbox one works fine).
Wifi internet does NOT work on Mac computers (we have two in the house both running Yosemite).  The light on the airport is green and the macs can connect to wifi but cannot connect to the internet (DNS issue?).
The wifi on my mac yosemite laptop does work on my office wireless and anywhere else but home.
    Backstory:
So a few months ago I purchased a brand new 6th generation Airport Extreme 802.11ac.  It worked fine with our old generic Time Warner cable modem until we forced to upgrade to a new Arris modem/router combination this weekend to upgrade our internet speeds (I don't recall the model I can get this later).  We told TWC that we did not need a router and would prefer to use the Apple router but they said it would work just as before by just plugging it into the ethernet port.
Initially we had network errors and I had to change from NAT to Bridge mode on the airport extreme and this worked for about a day.  The next morning I could only get internet and wifi on my iPhone or a windows machine elsewhere in the house.
What I tried (none of these worked):
resetting the router and modem worked briefly but the problem repeated itself a few hours later or after connecting to a different wireless network.
    deleting network config files (http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/).
deleting the wireless network from saved networks and connecting again.
Again this is a problem with mac laptops ONLY.  I have no machines running an older version of OS X so I can't test that easily (I can borrow one from a friend to rule that out).   We have 2 Mac computers both running yosemite and both have the same problem.  Every other wireless device in the house works like a charm. Any ideas?

  • Airport Extreme Disconnecting Windows Computer

My roommate is getting disconnected from my Airport Extreme fairly regularly. I have everything updated, and I'm running WPA2 Personal security. He's running Vista, and as far as I know, everything is updated there too. It seems to happen every 5 minutes or so over a period of time. Then, it it will be fine for a while. It often seems to happen while he's playing World of Warcraft.

  • Airport Extreme disconnects wireless Windows 7 laptop

I have an Airport Extreme (both antennas enabled) and multiple Windows 7 laptops regularly lose connectivity to the base station. When the connectivity is lost, I can switch from one antenna band to the other (B/G to N or vice versa) to reconnect, and it'll work fine again for a period of time (sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 3 hours). I do often notice connectivity disconnects when doing Lync VoIP, but not exclusively. Sometimes I'll be surfing the web, etc.
The base station is running 7.6, and I've reproduced this with 7.5.x as well. Multiple Windows machines show this behavior (Lenovo and HP I've tested). I've updated wireless drivers on the Windows machines. I can't reproduce this over a wired connection.
I have a Macbook Air that I so far haven't seen this issue on, and I don't recall seeing my connection reset on my iPad as I surf.
I did notice a couple lines in the log file of the base station:
Severity 5: (WAN) link state is down.
    then 7 seconds later
Severity 5: (WAN) link state is up.
I assume my internet provider is working fine because I can very quickly switch from one antenna band to the other and get my network service working again.
I found this thread, but it isn't clear if there is a modem problem because I can't reproduce this when connected to the AE via ethernet.
Any suggestions on how to better troubleshoot this would be appreciated.

Sorry, but Apple has not updated AirPort Utility for Windows for about 3 years.
You will need to use a Mac running Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion to administer the newer "ac" AirPorts.......or.....an iPad or iPhone with AirPort Utility for iOS installed on the device.

  • HELP - Airport Extreme Disconnect and Connection problems

    Hi everybody,
I recently (~2 months) got an Airport Extreme (Early 2009 Model). I was very happy with it, and everything worked fine, until a few weeks ago, when I started getting the following problems.
First, my iTouch wouldn't connect automatically anymore and when I tried connecting, it would say "Unable to Connect" around 5 times until I could connect, and then I would remain connected (full three bars) with internet for about 30 seconds, and then my connection would suddenly drop to 1 bar and my internet would stop working, and then it would eventually disconnect. May I just say that this was happening when I was sitting right next to the WiFi.
Secondly, all of the computers (both Windows and Mac) started having a similar problem: Connection Time Outs around five times until I can connect, and eventually signal dropping without the computer or anything moving. (BTW, the cable connections work fine, it's the the WiFi that doesn't work).
I tried changing channels, enabling Interference Robustness, and reverting to previous software updates, and also eventually Hard Reseting the box, without any results...
What could be my problem, and how could I fix it please?
    Thanks a lot...

Roger, you must be psychically broadcasting this because I just seconds ago posted the following on another thread...
I hope I am not "typing" too soon but I seem to have identified my wireless problem. After trying EVERYTHING in the world to try and figure out why my own network wouldn't work, I had a flash of inspiration. I changed the Channel setting in airport utility from "automatic" to 11. I just picked 11 because I liked the number - no other reason. Now, I am wirelessly connected again. I do not know why this worked; The channel setting has been on automatic for months and worked fine until late Friday night. So those of you who have been fighting this issue, give the channel fix a try. Your mileage may vary and may the force be with you.
(Will post this on another thread pertaining to this subject too. If I can keep just one soul from sacrificing many precious hours on this frustrating issue, then I will consider myself one good deed up on my Karmic calendar.)

  • Can multiple devices access drives connected to Airport extreme at the same time?

i have a few days to decide before someone gets me either an airport extreme or a decent NAS adapater to using with my existing airport express, from the US. my airport express serves me good for all my networking needs but i have decided to take my portable media wireless.
i wanna know which will be the best option? to plug in the portable hdds to an a.extreme via a usb hub and share it across devices or to do the same with a nas adapter using my existing current generation a.express?
i got ios, android, mac and windows devices on my network. and an apple tv.
    please share ur thoughts.
    Neerav

Express is slow ethernet.. 10/100 only. The max speed of any connection to a USB hard disk is limited severely by the 100mbit..
USB is always slow btw.. This is actually a poor way to share a drive. A cheap NAS.. ie ethernet to Sata directly is far far superior and a single disk NAS can be had cheaply.. you will never get close with USB in network situations.
If you use a hub though, you can plug multiple disks into an Extreme.. I guess the network speed is at least no worse than the USB hub -- ethernet devices which are lousy as a whole.
Never forget you have the fastest ethernet adapters and fastest possible connectors already on computers on the network.. people are so utterly mesmerized by NAS they forget.. a FW800 or better USB3 if you have a newer computer shared to the network from a computer has much higher throughput and is much cheaper than even the very low end network stand alone boxes.
